It’s important to recognize the roles people play in productions. Yuji Naka’s responsibilities as producer of Rodea would be wildly different than his responsibilities as director on Balan. I see too many articles where roles are glossed over in favour of like “THIS PERSON MADE THIS GAME!”
As someone pointed out already, the dude’s directing credits are super light. I don’t know what everyone expected. Sonic was a LOT more than just this guy’s programming chops. And having a storied career as a producer doesn’t necessarily translate to being a game director.
Edit: this isn’t anything new in this industry, though. It’s an industry that really suffers from trying to prop up old veterans as heroes and legends of the art form and throwing money at them based on one or two seminal projects, and not necessarily their entire track record, often ignoring some really bad output. If anyone else pitched this game, they would have been laughed at.
Definitely happening, I just don’t think the specs are going to end up being as big a jump as some would have liked. I’m expecting more functional/mechanical upgrades a la the Wii MotionPlus gyros or the New 3DS XL’s shoulder buttons than some huge jump to 4K@60 or something of that nature.
Huge X-COM fan, really wanted to like this one. But for me, X-COM combat just isn't enough on its own. I enjoy X-COM combat SO much because I enjoy how the experience morphs and adapts based on how you spent your time/resources/research/etc. in between rounds. Too many developers make the mistake of going with X-COM style combat without also implementing a satisfying meta game around it.
Devolver be killing it though. Loop Hero on PC recently rocked my world. Give me more genre-bending one-of-a-kind weirdness. I hope they don’t get too hung up on delivering franchises and sequels. That’s how good companies die.
AAA game design is a huge anchor tied around the neck of the rest of the video game industry. It sucks to see it happening, but this is the cost of people valuing graphical fidelity and large, cinematic set pieces over creative design and smaller experiences. Labour costs are climbing, time to develop is climbing, but all people want is more GRAFIX and moaaaar REFLECTIVE SURFACES, and maybe some MOCAP CELEBS!!!!!!!!! Gross.
There’s absolutely no way it’s hidden and anyone who thinks otherwise is being ridiculous. It either comes as DLC, or it’s not part of this compilation.
I’m putting in my predictions: Easter 2021, “New” Switch model that launches alongside an updated Joy-Con that has better pointer and motion tech alongside the obvious analog stick component upgrade, Pikmin and Metroid Prime are main launch titles.
My money’s on timed exclusivity with Sony for 6-12 months, this game will be on everything with a screen EVENTUALLY. Certified hotness. Just don’t expect it any time soon.
After the Fog Gaming fiasco, I think it’s pretty safe to say that games companies aren’t rushing to reveal their biggest and brightest through the pages of a print magazine. For the love of all that’s holy, temper your expectations. It’s much cheaper than therapy.
The NA/Euro art looks like fan art compared to the Japanese art. Where there’s only two options this week though, I can see that skewing the results a bit.
SoR4, The Takeover, Fight’nRage, Ninja Saviors, River City Girls... this genre still has lots to offer IMHO. This doesn’t look like it’s on the mark, though. The small FOV combined with the large sprite size gives me a bit of a claustrophobic feel to the combat. Maybe it’s just the editing, will keep an eye out.
@TG16_IS_BAE it’s games like Demon’s Souls that are perfectly emblematic of why the next gen launch slates are stale af IMHO. To each their own, I suppose. I just don’t think next gen will show its promise until devs have sat with UE5 for a long while.
They need to start pumping out 1st party gaaaaames, just go nucking futs with 1st party releases. It’s the best way to compete, because there’s not going to be as much 3rd party support going forward, IMHO. The start of the ps5/Xbox Series X gen is gonna be slow and disappointing. Nintendo can counter punch with an absolute glut of 1st party titles. I don’t think they’re going to try to compete with new hardware, unless it’s more/interesting bits for the current model.
The Switch is an absolute snooze fest at the moment, IMHO. Wake me up when something good gets announced. There’s just nothing happening and the stuff that is seems rushed and half-baked. There’s something off about the whole thing. The priorities are not where they should be.
We shouldn’t try to minimize online harassment. I am not saying this game should not have been made, I don’t know enough about it, but there have been some absolutely DISGUSTING attempts at minimizing this stuff like it’s just “mean people on the internet”.
I didn’t watch the presentation, was there more footage/analysis of this game shown that isn’t in the trailer? I am having a hard time understanding the outrage here. Is this really all because there was some baseless rumour it was going to be a CASTLEVANIA announcement? (like.. what?!?) Keep in mind that WayForward did a The Mummy tie in that was also baulked at that turned out to be incredible.
For the most part, I enjoyed the first one, it was slightly better than OK. However, this just kind of looks too similar. I really hope they do a SNES/GBA/anything but NES throwback at some point.
They should have waited until they were done working on this game before doing a complete on the cart version like this. Not sure if it’s live on the Switch version but the Update of Plenty is a hugely significant free content update that went live on the Steam version a couple weeks ago that likely isn’t on this cart.
I’m OK with a bit of mechanical and aesthetic jank, I can get the “charm” argument there sometimes, but frame rates this low just hurt my head to look at. None for me, thanks.
@Bl4ckb100d personally, I think big and/or interesting news happening to a developer/publisher with such a large catalog of titles across basically every Nintendo system is news deserving of being on a Nintendo fan site.
I get the sense the Switch release will be an afterthought and will be riddled with HORRIBLE mobile game UI/UX elements. I am not even that big a Pokemon fan and I’m legit bummed by this announcement.
This is why I almost exclusively play indie games these days. At least those companies still need to keep the gamer happy to survive. The last thing TPC is thinking about is keeping its core game audience happy. It’s thinking about the same thing every other massive corporation is thinking about... shareholders and demographics and new markets and Winnie the Pooh’s magic hunny pot.
@DevlinMandrake I kind of disagree, I just think a spiritual successor should be a game by the same company, or another company that contains some of the original creative team. Dark Souls was a spiritual successor to Demon's Souls, Paper Mario/Mario & Luigi were spiritual successors to Super Mario RPG, Yooka Laylee and Banjo & Kazooie. I just think someone coming from a generally non-creative role like producer laying claim to a title's spiritual successor is only slightly less ridiculous than me doing it. I guess I just think the term gets used too much.
I flip flopped a few times but I'm full on out of the game now. The lack of QoL kills it for me. Stardew and Terraria scratch an itch this game can't even come close to. Years and years of attention to both QoL AND content in both titles. Returning back to both after 200 hours or so in ACNH was like a dream come true, especially Terraria 1.4.
I don't get how a producer can claim a title as a spiritual successor while utilizing none of the same directors, designers, artists and programmers of the original. Screams cash grab to me. Loudly.
I'm so on board for this self aware heavy metal movement. Nekrogoblikon with their goblin gimmick, Okilly Dokilly with their Ned Flanders gimmick... It's funny because I can't even stand the genre when they're taking themselves seriously, but somehow when it becomes light hearted and meme-y/gimmicky, I'm all in. The John Goblikon podcast on the Nekrogoblikon youtube channel is BRILLIANT. Highly recommend the Bobby Lee episode to start, just to get a feel.
