The only titles I would have any interest in aren’t on sale in NA. Bummer.

I hope Nintendo doesn’t let Dual Screen gaming die. How about this idea: allowing a player to use a Switch Lite as a controller for a docked Switch, opening up Dual Screen gaming. I’d bite, especially if they opened up DS/3DS back catalogs. Ohhhh wishful thinking, how you comfort me so.

@jipiboily yeah the ARPG thing is a good observation, it’s kind of a really well-executed celebration of all things “grind”. From resource gatherers, growers, ARPGs, etc. But it ends up being a one-trick pony as a result. But if that’s your jam, it’s a pretty fun time. Like @Dm9982 mentioned above, the pace is kind of accelerated to keep up the excitement, because it really lacks any sort of narrative pull.

An easy recommendation for fans of the genre but if you aren’t, this is not going to be the one to hook you. I can see it being a really divisive experience. It’s got the depth of a Stardew Valley, but the aimlessness of a Minecraft clone without the flexible creation aspects. The end product is very niche IMHO. Be warned.

I have yet to use a single platinum point. I forget they even exist most of the time. Crap discounts on old stuff I already own, wallpapers I would never use, alternate covers I would never waste good ink on. The gold points are great, but they really need to step it up in NA or just get rid of it altogether and beef up the gold points program instead.

Geez, I really get the sense that some of you didn’t even read the quote or bother to make sense of it. It’s almost like some people just wanted to jump on some sort of moving object that has lots of forward momentum. Like a heavy wagon of sorts, one that’s got a band of people on it perhaps.

@PerishSong I am not sure if that’s a great analogy actually. Magic Mike is a great story written/directed by an Academy Award-winner that just happens to have male strippers as a major narrative element. It’s not a science fiction movie where the male actors are all just strippers for some unexplained reason totally unrelated to the plot.

So did you submit copy and someone else wrote the joys and cons? Because I also need to give a tip of the old hat to that good sir, because any comments section where the term “fan service” gets used liberally makes me giggle like a teenager.

@tzahn yup, I can see that. It’s a smart move. There’s a few 1st party titles that got a real bum rap as far as I’m concerned. Would love to see Kirby get a 2nd shot, would love to see ARMS get a 2nd shot, maybe even Pokken Tournament. Even if you don’t end up buying the title, it’s a real decent/cheap 7 day rental essentially. I miss being able to rent a game!

This game, like Kirby Star Allies, is in a MUCH better place than when it launched. I implore everyone even mildly interested to give it a go. One of the best multiplayer experiences on the system, IMHO.

I’m pretty early days, but I went Blue Lions and I’m really digging it so far. They seemed like the moderate bunch, despite the religiosity in the name. Not an empire, not a utopia. I dig Dimitri’s “but I’m a normal guy too!” approach so far.

@YANDMAN poor execution? Yeah, I dunno about that. HAMSTER’s work emulating these games has been pretty amazing. It’s cool if you don’t dig the game choices, but the ones they have done, they’ve done extremely well.

I’m usually the first one to poke a little fun at the angry online mobs, but I fully support the angry online mob when it’s aimed at EA. It just feels right.

Danger, High Voltage. I remember they did The Conduit series on the Wii and that was... fine? This looks real bad, though. A cash-grab tie-in to a cash-grab sequel.

XCOM gets tossed around too liberally as a corollary for every squad tactics game IMO. It neglects half of what makes those games AWESOME, which is the research and development/base building aspect of it. Heck, I can see the inspiration more in Fire Emblem: Three Houses than some that get called an XCOM-like.

Team Nermal all damn day.

Next in the queue for me after Fire Emblem.

The colours are just so much nicer on the Japanese, from the colour choices right down to the level of saturation. Hits me way more as that kind of classic Sci-Fi anime level of saturation, like the Akira movie or something. Also, I think the second you flip that logo at a 45 degree angle, you’ve already lost the fight. The centre bottom alignment gives it that 80s/90s Heavy Metal Magazine OOMPH that’s way more in line with the way I feel when I’m playing this game. IMHO.

@Jeremyjones12992 yeah, needs way more “fan service”. I definitely wish this game about Nazis had a little more sex appeal.

I am going to go out on a limb and say you’ll notice a pattern to these results.

I feel like every DOOM is important to the timeline in a way, but I definitely got more out of Turok and GoldenEye on 64.

@60frames-please yeah, I agree. I tend to use the term way differently. Like, to me Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is an example of fan service. DC Universe Online is fan service. My Nintendo Rewards are fan service. But here, it kind of makes it seem like every anime fan is just in it for the tits or something haha.

I have been oddly excited for this game. Looks like the right balance of arcade and sim with good performance.

@GameOtaku personally, I think they would be remiss not to mention the “fan service” (hehe) in the main body of the review, but I don’t get the sense it factored in to the decision based on the review’s conclusion paragraph. This game got a 5/10 on IGN. I just don’t think the gameplay on display here is that good. Even the 7/10 from Gamespot is from a self-professed die hard fan of the show, and it’s got a lot of critique on the gameplay.

I was just reminiscing about my experiences with these games the other day in the 25th anniversary thread! So cool. I got a bundle of games for my first PC that included Wolf 3D, Doom 1/2 and the original XCOM. Can’t remember which I dove into first but DOOM very well could have been the first PC game I ever played.

I giggle every time I read “fan service” when what is really meant is “T&A”.

Gotta love that fan service. There’s a couple free websites that are just jam packed with it on the internet.

People do realize that this site has many reviewers, right? I always see tons of criticisms and wacky theories about the reviews on this site. People like different things, and every reviewer has a different approach/method to expressing their opinion. We should be discouraging groupthink, not looking for it.

@nintendork64 my optimism with this article is the mentioning of the recent success of the Australian studio system, so hopefully everyone lands on their feet, clearly a talented bunch.

I actually really liked the single player on this one back in the 360 days.
