@RiasGremory haha if you’re referencing my clearly satirical joke comment about libs coming for your boobs, then no. I will not stop bringing joke politics into games articles.
@PerishSong I am not sure if that’s a great analogy actually. Magic Mike is a great story written/directed by an Academy Award-winner that just happens to have male strippers as a major narrative element. It’s not a science fiction movie where the male actors are all just strippers for some unexplained reason totally unrelated to the plot.
@Arcade_Tokyo solid review, and just stumbled on your Tokyo Arcades blog and that’s another big thumbs up.
So did you submit copy and someone else wrote the joys and cons? Because I also need to give a tip of the old hat to that good sir, because any comments section where the term “fan service” gets used liberally makes me giggle like a teenager.
@tzahn yup, I can see that. It’s a smart move. There’s a few 1st party titles that got a real bum rap as far as I’m concerned. Would love to see Kirby get a 2nd shot, would love to see ARMS get a 2nd shot, maybe even Pokken Tournament. Even if you don’t end up buying the title, it’s a real decent/cheap 7 day rental essentially. I miss being able to rent a game!
This game, like Kirby Star Allies, is in a MUCH better place than when it launched. I implore everyone even mildly interested to give it a go. One of the best multiplayer experiences on the system, IMHO.
@WoolooSweater If you adjust for the flatness of the earth, aliens among us, animal-human hybrids and Russian bots, I’m gonna say 7 million. Yeah, final answer. 7 million.
el oh el. Good luck. I’m sure the Reddit detectives are already cherry picking google translations in order to prove some insane theory about broken joycons or lost pokedexes. The internet gonna internet.
I’m pretty early days, but I went Blue Lions and I’m really digging it so far. They seemed like the moderate bunch, despite the religiosity in the name. Not an empire, not a utopia. I dig Dimitri’s “but I’m a normal guy too!” approach so far.
@YANDMAN poor execution? Yeah, I dunno about that. HAMSTER’s work emulating these games has been pretty amazing. It’s cool if you don’t dig the game choices, but the ones they have done, they’ve done extremely well.
I’m usually the first one to poke a little fun at the angry online mobs, but I fully support the angry online mob when it’s aimed at EA. It just feels right.
Danger, High Voltage. I remember they did The Conduit series on the Wii and that was... fine? This looks real bad, though. A cash-grab tie-in to a cash-grab sequel.
XCOM gets tossed around too liberally as a corollary for every squad tactics game IMO. It neglects half of what makes those games AWESOME, which is the research and development/base building aspect of it. Heck, I can see the inspiration more in Fire Emblem: Three Houses than some that get called an XCOM-like.
The colours are just so much nicer on the Japanese, from the colour choices right down to the level of saturation. Hits me way more as that kind of classic Sci-Fi anime level of saturation, like the Akira movie or something. Also, I think the second you flip that logo at a 45 degree angle, you’ve already lost the fight. The centre bottom alignment gives it that 80s/90s Heavy Metal Magazine OOMPH that’s way more in line with the way I feel when I’m playing this game. IMHO.
@60frames-please yeah, I agree. I tend to use the term way differently. Like, to me Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is an example of fan service. DC Universe Online is fan service. My Nintendo Rewards are fan service. But here, it kind of makes it seem like every anime fan is just in it for the tits or something haha.
@Fake-E-Lee I’m only on my first! Haha and it’s a scorcher on my sister’s patio at the moment. Bro-in-law’s got the smoker fired up. Beer, BBQ and some baseball a bit later might be in order, me thinks.
@GameOtaku personally, I think they would be remiss not to mention the “fan service” (hehe) in the main body of the review, but I don’t get the sense it factored in to the decision based on the review’s conclusion paragraph. This game got a 5/10 on IGN. I just don’t think the gameplay on display here is that good. Even the 7/10 from Gamespot is from a self-professed die hard fan of the show, and it’s got a lot of critique on the gameplay.
I was just reminiscing about my experiences with these games the other day in the 25th anniversary thread! So cool. I got a bundle of games for my first PC that included Wolf 3D, Doom 1/2 and the original XCOM. Can’t remember which I dove into first but DOOM very well could have been the first PC game I ever played.
People do realize that this site has many reviewers, right? I always see tons of criticisms and wacky theories about the reviews on this site. People like different things, and every reviewer has a different approach/method to expressing their opinion. We should be discouraging groupthink, not looking for it.
@nintendork64 my optimism with this article is the mentioning of the recent success of the Australian studio system, so hopefully everyone lands on their feet, clearly a talented bunch.
Aw that really sucks. I played my first game with a deck building mechanic just recently with that Steamworld one. It was a really good game for the most part but right at the final boss I felt myself tiring of the deck building element. Maybe I will give Hands of Fate 2 a shot.
@antdickens @Quarth I definitely agree that some of the grumbling can be avoided by just a smidgen of investigation/analysis. Nintendo Enthusiast, Nintendo Soup, GoNintendo and Nintendo Life (probably others) all ran the same misleading headline, which was some version of “UK policy hasn’t changed like America’s has”, which was based on anecdotal evidence based on Reddit users who tried to get their joycons fixed immediately after reading a leaked internal memo. Fans probably saw this info weeks before the customer support staff even hears about it. We haven’t heard a statement from any region, let alone the one where the leak came from. No where in the initial Vice reporting was there mention of the policy being in place globally and everyone should send their joycons in. So to say UK policy hasn’t changed CAN be perceived as a touch misleading IMHO since it’s doubtful that even the American policy is in place at this time. This could take MONTHS. Imagine the changes in pipeline and logistics and staffing that’s going to be necessary to handle the biblical flood of joycons they’re about to receive.
I grumbled initially but have sense deleted it and I very much appreciate you guys changing the headline to be more reflective of the reality and not the Reddit reality.
Can we just take a second for how funny this is, though? Like, follow me on this journey. Vice Gaming reports on a leaked internal memo that was probably meant for middle management in one region of Nintendo. Some dude reads it and is like “IT’S GO TIME!” Proceeds to call some call centre employee who has no idea what he’s even bloody talking about. Then gets pissed off on the internet about it. That’s hilarious to me.
@Quarth yup. Oh well, I am gonna watch for all the folks who comment without reading a gosh darn thing but the headline and proceed to have a good old laugh about it.
@Supadav03 yeah, I really don’t get all The region exclusive limited edition stuff. The Japanese exclusive consoles, the region exclusive steelbook editions, etc etc. They’re kind of a hot company across the globe right now, they should be making this stuff available to everyone without the need to import while they are having such a good moment. They came into the Switch era in a defensive, austere position after the whooping they took with the Wii U, but damn... they’ve been kind of killing it for a couple years now, loosen up, sell us some junk for cripes sake.
Have patience people, holy frick. The Vice article was a leaked internal memo. To who? Who knows. Probably not the entire staff, definitely not the general public. They need time to initiate these policies. If you look at the timeline of these reports, it sounds like they attempted to get the repairs done right after the Vice article was published and before the company has even officially made a statement, let alone train staff.

@SolarJetman what’s a better euphemism, “fan service” or “shame break”? Asking for a friend.

Uh oh, looks like the libs are at it again. First they’re coming for our boobs, next they’re coming for our guns!
