First time seeing the Euro variant, and it’s quite stately on the textured black. The “secret dungeon” stamp on the NA takes up too much of the composition. If the Japanese cover was a comic book, I would read the snot out of it, but it just doesn’t read like a video game cover to me. My two cents.
@brunojenso I get ya. It’s an interesting discussion. What, if any, are the objective truths in gaming. I think it’s definitely possible to recognize the objectivity in things like historical significance and overall quality, even if someone’s enjoyment is entirely subjective.
I have clear memories of being like 5 or 6 and walking around the house with a NES controller wrapped around my waist pretending to shoot my older sister with my NES Blaster haha, that thing had such a nice satisfying click to the button.
Oof, this is gonna be a disaster if a whole run of these went out with bad sticks. I have a hard time believing Nintendo isn’t addressing it, but things move so slow in the corporate/manufacturing space. Very plausible that these were already off the line before Nintendo acknowledged the flaw. I’d certainly be holding off for now on the Lite, it’s a real shame.
It’s never gonna happen, but if I could hop between the two versions as seamless as Google is offering with Stadia, I would bite in a second. I would love a beater Switch that I didn’t have to baby as much, but I’m all about the OG Switch and will never give that thing up.
I’m pretty sure I can play this game blind folded. SMB3 and SMW were a one-two punch that changed my whole trajectory. Lifelong Nintendo fan because of these games.
I’m STRUGGLING to finish my first play through, to be honest. I’m determined to eventually see the end, but man.. what a frigging chore. There would have to be a lot more than this to bite at DLC. The writing and voice acting became so grating for me that I just began clicking the button as fast as I possibly could to get out of it, and even that wasn’t fast enough. The fact I have to listen to this drivel every time I want to increase support just drives me nutso. Those recycled character animations, like what the actual what were they thinking? If I see Byleth go to put his hand to his chin but not actually touch it one more time I’m gonna scream. The graphics are SO so sloppy. The battles were great at first but became so repetitive in later game. Ugh, my biggest disappointment of the Switch gen, honestly. Smash that dislike button if you must, but I know a lot of you know what I’m talking about. This was a rush job with a piss poor localization.
@Damo hahah. I would love to be a fly on the wall for that bet. I once joked about a NL comment section drinking game. At least you can make back your money, can’t undo liver damage.
The standard pro controller suits me just fine, but gosh darn if I’m not tempted by these. There’s just something so appealing in the simplicity of the thing.
I just hope they don’t get complacent with it. All these big arse companies are getting so complacent because they feel (whether justified or not) they have a built-in audience that’s never gonna leave them no matter what. Loved Far Cry 4, hated Far Cry 5 and New Dawn. I definitely see a downward trend to their worlds. I liked Starlink a lot, but it could have been so much more in my opinion.
Might have to pick this up. A pub on my block just added a small arcade and I’ve been going hog-wild on pinball machines as of late. Maybe I can save myself some quarters.
I would posit that Billy wins no matter what happens to his records. Google “Billy Mitchell Legal Action” and look at all the publications that are picking it up. NL, Resetera, Polygon, Wired, Tech Spot, and so on and so forth. Dude knows exactly what he’s doing.
Edit: He’s also the best thing that’s ever happened to Twin Galaxies and everyone knows it. Who the HECK would be talking about Twin Galaxies right now if it wasn’t for Billy Mitchell? Who would be talking about any of this, if it wasn’t for Billy Mitchell? Steve who? A spotlight on Billy is a spotlight on retro gaming and that’s awesome. Every story needs a villain. I find myself becoming a bigger and bigger fan the more I rant about it.
Europe all the way here, democracy has failed. That angled logo in the NA version is BADBADBAD, not to mention the colour scheme is far inferior to the European logo.
Every move this dude makes cracks me up. He’s the ultimate heel, and a half decent businessman who’s been working that brand for a long, long time. He’s the villain, the black hat of the arcade. We need Billy Mitchell in our lives. I love every goddamn second of it.
lol the automatons are at it again. Wurrrrr. Review incoming. Agenda confirmed. Reasoning: not high enough. Beep boop beep boop. Trash review. Get likes. End function.
Definitely ran afoul of the actual censors with this one, is my guess, but we will never know. This is not censorship spurred on by SJWs or it would be changed entirely, the line would still be considered UGLY as all hell to anyone concerned about this kind of thing. The removal of “submissive” removes any sexual connotations that could put this into a different rating categ...
Naw y’know what, I’m just gonna take the easy route this time.. CENSORSHIP! SJWs! Am I doing it right, you guys? Am I? Uhhhh, journalists! Uhhh.. Female characters! I’m oppressed! Rahhhhh! This is fun, I’m gonna do this from now on.
I am kind of envious at times of all the people still pushing these tired narratives of fake news/oppressive SJWs/oppressed gamer. Life just seems so... simple. You don’t need to think about a darn thing if you don’t want to, definitely don’t gotta read no articles. Forget thinking critically at every juncture, you already know what to say and which comments to like! You’re like a pack of penguins protecting each other from the elements.
Sorry guys, but @Anti-Matter is clearly the smartest guy in the room on this one. Although, the rest of you gave it a real good try. Maybe go back to law school and brush up.
@kenjab until the “game reviewers are corrupt” narrative stops playing well for likes with THAT crowd, you’re never going to get through with things like reason and logic.
Come on guys, don’t expect a Nintendo fan site to do some highly comprehensive breakdown of a COMPLEX piece of coding software that would take weeks/months to complete. A quick, cursory glance at the product website will give you all the details you need, plus documentation to allow you to dig as deep as you want. No one comes onto these sites for a comprehensive breakdown on Unity/Unreal. I know it plays well for the likes, or whatever, but let’s be a bit realistic here.
Nostalgia is a tricky mistress, because when I go back and analyze MOST (always some exceptions) box art from the 90s, invariably my conclusion is “they’re all sooooooo BAD!” Back in the day, I would gawk at these things. Now, I see it as the dark ages of design. There’s likeable design work from the 60s, 70s, 80s that holds up today so much better than the bulk of design work from the 90s. What the heck happened in the 90s?! Must have been some crazy drugs floating around.
I am getting excited about getting excited about a Pokemon game haha, if that makes any sense. I didn’t think it would ever happen again. I bought Let’s Go on a whim after tiring of the series many, MANY moons ago. It was the perfect reintroduction, and I’m SO stoked for this one now too and it feel awesome! Woo! Getting jazzed just thinking about it. Easily my most anticipated title. I think all you naysayers and GF haters are out y’r darn miiinds.
Oh man, I forgot all about the gc keyboard controller! Great round up. The Super Scope design still holds up really well, it’s such a nice looking piece of gear.
Stunt Race FX has a big place in my heart, it was just one of those games that clicked with me when I was a kid, I couldn’t get enough. This is a solid start to one of the best libraries in gaming. Much to be stoked about.
I hope these hobbled cross-platform titles go away, tbh. My ideal vision for the Switch is an increase in exclusive 3rd party content. I would take one Mario vs Rabbids style release over a hundred lacklustre cross platform ports.

Side note: if anyone likes getting into the weeds about game design, Game Maker’s Toolkit has done some excellent coverage on Celeste.

Re: Forget About A Celeste Sequel, It Probably Won't Happen
Ahh, so refreshing. Not everything needs to be a franchise. Celeste is perfect just the way it is.
Re: Review: Super Mario World - Phenomenal Platforming Perfection
@brunojenso how is what the guy said not his own subjective opinion, something you state yourself is all that matters? Your argument makes no sense.
Edit: sorry, that came across as harsh, I am having trouble making sense of your argument, I should say.
