Re: Nintendo's Punch-Out!! Series May Be Dead And Buried For Good

Turbo857

Ya know as a mixed race person who's been playing games since its beginning I believe stereotypical characters are just part of the game's charm and those who are offended need to get a life.

I have family from Jamaica and found Bob Charlie from Super Punch Out to be hilarious. Stereotypes are not meant to be taken seriously and I think there are ways to do it in a Punch-Out sequel.

For instance, companies are protected by law for doing parodies. So having boxers that represent caricatures of famous celebrities would be a great way for the Punch-Out series to evolve.

Just imagine having to box against WVBA fighters that resemble P. Diddy, Kanye West, R. Kelly, Donald Trump, Hulk Hogan, Vladimir Putin, Elton John etc. If they stick to celebrity caricatures, the series could easily live on imo.

@littlegreenbob

Well I can't disagree with that. If Zelda was the sole protagonist in Tears with the abilities as you describe, it'd be a totally different experience.

The kicker is: Do you think most Zelda fans would want that though? I'm all for Nintendo letting Zelda be the sole protagonist of a top down 2D Zelda game but an ambitious 3D, open world Zelda should never remove sword combat or Link as a protagonist imo.

A playable Zelda in the 3D games is perfectly fine as a secondary protagonist with her own abilities or as an optional playable side character but I'm not trying to put 350 hours into an open world Zelda game without sword combat.

I'd still like to see SSHD control options make it into a future Zelda.

You don't think the caves, wells, new enemies and bosses added any depth to the Botw map? For me it felt much more than a reskin.

And every familiar local had very different problems to solve and sidequests to complete. Even if we're technically exploring the same map, there were lots of new experiences and different things added to warrant the revisit imo.

Re: Soapbox: Fire Emblem’s Future May Not Be In Turn-Based Combat

Turbo857

Engage had excellent combat, some of the best in the series. But its story was passable and its cast was far from the best of the series.

There were some standout characters but its cast was far less likeable than Houses or most of the best entries in the series.

You can never remove turned based SRPG elements from Fire Emblem.

Re: Best Super Smash Bros. Games Of All Time

@Lunatic002

Smash 4 beats Brawl any day of the week. Once they made it less floaty and removed tripping, it was already a better game.

The only place where Smash 4 falls short of Brawl is Subspace Emissary.

Re: Zelda Producer Responds To Fans Who Want A More "Traditional Linear" Adventure

Turbo857

@The-Chosen-one

Ocarina of Time remake will, undoubtedly, sell significantly less than either botw or totk. Those are the franchise juggernauts.

botw sold over 30 mil. totk right now is 18 mil and it's not even a year old.

I'm not saying it's a bad idea to produce a remake of OoT, but we should keep our expectations measured when it comes to sales. And I predict it'll be somewhere around 7-8 mil tops.

Re: Zelda Producer Responds To Fans Who Want A More "Traditional Linear" Adventure

Turbo857

@Haruki_NLI

Lol, that's a great point! A Link To the Past is a perfect 2D Zelda. It's a masterpiece. Formatically, Ocarina is virtually a 3D Link To the Past. And Nintendo has been stuck trying to throw new ideas at the franchise only to always be compared to Ocarina of Time.

Twilight Princess is a better game but (despite the lower sales), fans still hold Ocarina in higher regard.

Botw/totk format was the right direction for the series at the right time.

Re: Review: Super Mario Bros. Wonder - The Best 2D Mario Since The Super NES

Turbo857

@Chunkboi79

One difference is instead of Bowser kidnapping Peach he becomes a castle. Also, strangely the game feels a lot less linear and you can chart you're own course (sorta speak) after clearing a few stages. There's more random stuff thrown into the mix. Wonder flower effects spice things up nicely. Badges add a nice layer of strategy (and replayability).

I felt the home console New Super Mario Bros games were good but felt NSMB Wii was like a co-op SMB3 and NSMBU was a co-op World. Which again isn't a bad comparison, just felt like co op was the only thing that moved the formula forward.

However, Wonder actually feels like a true sequel to World with new ideas, art, aesthetic and mechanics! Simply wonderful like Paul Orndorff

Re: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Director (Sort Of) Explains What Happened To Sheikah Tech

Turbo857

@Asaki

I assumed the Guardian tentacles in the totk towers (along with their blue glowing activation panel) represented a remnant of botw styled Sheikah tech. And of course the Purah Pad since it was developed by Purah and Robbie who're both members of the Sheikah clan.

But if the article (and ahem... devs) are specifically just referring to Guardians and the blue glowing Sheikah shrines... I'd assume the Shrines were dismantled since their only purpose was to help the hero regain his lost strength to fight against the Calamity.

Guardians were instrumental in aiding the Calamity in bringing about the ruin of Hyrule so they were most likely destroyed to avoid a scenario where they can be used again as weapons against their creators and the kingdom they were initially designed to protect. Same with the Divine Beasts. I think that would've been a better explanation than what the devz stated. But traditionally, Nintendo would never let story specifics get in the way of including new game mechanics.

Re: Soapbox: 'Switch 2' Doesn't Really Need Backwards Compatibility

Turbo857

@Dm9982

Those are great points. Microsoft is the current generation leader of BC. Their hardware release model is dedicated to it and they even go the extra mile to improve framerates and resolutions (for certain games) from previous generations. It's not perfect but they do BC better than Nintendo and Sony.

If the rumors are true and the Switch 2 offers DLSS than there is no reason it shouldn't be backwards compatible. It'd be a nice treat to see OG Switch games upscaled on the successor.

Unfortunately only owners of the Series X/S have witnessed a similar experience

Re: UK Charts: Disney Illusion Island Makes A Lukewarm Debut As FIFA 23 Dominates

Turbo857

@Tryffel

Eh, I think it's a stretch to compare it to those games. Those games are traditional linear platformers whereas Disney Illusion Island is structured like a Metroidvania.

Played a little over 2 hours of it 4 players and me and my friends are diggin' the game quite a bit. I think it's especially great for those coming from the Castle/Word of Illusion and Quackshot era!

Re: UK Charts: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Reclaims The Top Spot

Turbo857

@Not_Soos

Eh, I doubt it. The Ultrahand building mechanic will keep this game talked about til the end of time. It's Breath of the Wild on steroids and that game still sells and never leaves the conversation in discussions about the GOAT.

Hell, Totk even has an actual GOAT helping in the tutorial. It's like Nintendo already knew how this game was going to turn out...

Re: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Trailer Gets Creative With Vehicle Building, Fused Weapons

Turbo857

@Friendly

Yeah, personally I love seeing games in 60fps but don't care about resolution specs too much. Compelling gameplay beats out everything.

As far as straying from Zelda: They still showed us a sample of horse riding, sword/shield action and the use of new items/abilities to manipulate the environment around you. Or rather, use the environment to manipulate character mechanics or what have you.

I think what we really need to see, in order to determine whether we're straying further or closer to core "Zelda" mechanics, is how the dungeons are handled. So far, we've seen nothing of shrines or the famous life bar extending heart container collecting mechanic we've come to know and love. We'll have to play a wait and see approach til then.

Re: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Trailer Gets Creative With Vehicle Building, Fused Weapons

Turbo857

@PinderSchloss

Not an advocate whatsoever for the $70 price hike. These days a $70 price tag needs to come with 4K resolutions and a 60 fps performance mode. And at the very least, be introduced with the debut of a new gen console. Nintendo's doing none of the above with Tears of the Kingdom.

However, in regards to the game footage we saw = it's just 10 minutes. Yes, of course they're going to use a lot of botw assets but we saw this with Mario Galaxy 2. At the end of the day, did that feel like DLC or a whole new game?

I dig the three new mechanics in the latest gameplay demo and I'm sure there's a lot more under the hood that we'll find after the game releases.

Starlink should be where the series is headed. Transforming to a Walker would've been great during ground combat especially. I hope Nintendo does something open world with Star Fox

Re: Review: Fire Emblem Engage - Relationships Get Sidelined By A Thrilling Combat-First Focus

Turbo857

@Ryu_Niiyama

Ashnard was a flat and boring character? What? He was indeed a might makes right kinda character, like Edelgard. But Ashnard killed his father and all of his siblings to be king. He married Dragon Laguz royalty, abandoned his son and left him for dead, drugged his wife's brother when he came to rescue her and took him prison and used him as his personal mount up until his death. Yes, his motivation was textbook greed and power. But you saw the depth of his character through all of his actions.

Again, who the heck is the leader of the Agarthans? Thales in comparison to Ashnard is no comparison at all.

I'm just saying: Three Houses doesn't have a bad story. The Tellius story is deep and multilayered but you understood the motivations of all the main players by the time you complete the game. By the time Path of Radiance or Radiant Dawn ended, you were satisfied.

When Three Houses ends, depending on your path you might feel otherwise. Claude's path = I was good with the ending. But Dimitri? Dude doesn't even battle the main dude's who are pulling the strings. Even when you play other paths to discover new information, like Death Knight origins, etc., it's nothing really earth shaking. Ok Byleth's mother was a clone vessel for Sothis... who is she? What was her name? Barely anything is said about that... unless you buy the DLC. But we eventually find out about Ike's mother, how she met Griel and the Fire Emblem as the story progresses.

Three Houses split story hurts the narrative in some paths. Radiant Dawn splits into 4 parts and all converge at the end. The Tellius saga has a much better cohesive narrative. And now that I've put time into Engage, it makes Three Houses feel even more bloated.

Re: Review: Fire Emblem Engage - Relationships Get Sidelined By A Thrilling Combat-First Focus

Turbo857

@Ryu_Niiyama

That was a really thorough breakdown. Even though that's just about all true, I feel like the player really has to fish for some of that info. You get more info on the Death Knight by playing different paths but it all amounts to a fairly paper thin character.

As far as the Agarthans, we don't know much if anything about the main dude or any of the generals. It's like they're bad just because they wanted to be bad. With a character like King Ashnard from Path of Radiance, we were spoon fed background info throughout the game. By the time we fight'em, we know who he is.

Three Houses has a story but I wish it was explained better. Fates story was one of the worst
