Nintendo has shared an updated list of Europe's most-downloaded Switch eShop games, revealing which titles were the most popular during December 2021.
Perhaps a result of families getting together over the holidays, Mario Party Superstars has claimed the number one spot for the month. There's nothing like a good old argument over who's stealing whose stars and who punched who during that last minigame after Christmas dinner, huh?
This means that last month's top games, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, have both slipped slightly, the former now in second place and the latter in seventh. Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain, a new Switch exclusive release in December, has debuted in fourth.
You can check out the full list below. It's based on the number of Nintendo eShop downloads (so no physical sales) in European territories during the whole month:
- Mario Party Superstars
- Pokémon Brilliant Diamond
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain
- Minecraft
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons
- Pokémon Shining Pearl
- FIFA 22
- Stardew Valley
- New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
- Unpacking
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
- Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury
- Among Us
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Did you download any of these titles on Switch last month? Any surprises in the top 15? Tell us below.

I've never seen FIFA this far down for European sales. Now that's a bit interesting.
But not as interesting as the Switch reportedly outselling the Wii's lifetime sales thanks to the holidays. The official numbers have yet to be reported in Nintendo's annual reports, but VGChartz did a calculation and found approximately 101.88 million sales, compared to the Wii's 101.63 million.

@ModdedInkling I remember when analysts laughed at the possibility saying no chance. I can honestly see it hitting 130-140 million before it is done.
Brain Academy, by the way, is shockingly light on content. Bought it for the family for Christmas and after 10mins you feel like you've seen everything.
@ModdedInkling @Duncanballs If they ever release a Switch Pro then it could even beat the PS2.
@SuperZeldaFun my nephew got FIFA 22 on Switch for Christmas and he has already put in well over 30hours. He’s enjoying it and it’s currently 50% off digitally, and riding high on the eShop.
FIFA 22 switch version?! Really? So people still buy & support this weak port?
@Rpg-lover
The problem is on the switch we have nothing better, no PES competition. For me now I can play my games handheld and not on TV, this is the best i will get and at its core, its a game of football. That is realistic enough. I don't need a PS or Xbox for top end graphics. Just a good old fashioned game of football in handheld and this gives it to us with the current players.
I got mine for nothing as an xmas present, but if not i would have brought it, so i am probably considered part of the problem, same as pokemon as i will be getting legends. But oh well, I just want games I enjoy and not to fussed on the politics and I get to chill and have fun and not worry about graphics or frame rates.
Great to see Unpacking on there!
@Rpg-lover I've probably said this before, but it's pretty much your only option for a football 'sim' type game on Switch - taken as a standalone game it's not bad. The vast majority buying it either have no other option, aren't comparing it 'proper' versions on other platforms or are simply not aware that it's a re-skinned version of previous years.
The lack of footprint for Super Mario Odyssey is so weird to me - that game was brilliant and we all kind of moved on
@NintendoWife I played Big Brain Academy with my family for a few hours. The multiplayer modes are cute but not too exciting, but we had plenty of fun just passing it around and trying to get to the top ranks in all 20 minigames. Even the more elderly people of the family who barely know how to use a controller had fun.
Three indies on this list is pretty good going. Even though Among Us is dull and overrated
Nice all around list! Glad to see Mario Party Superstars take the top spot, it NEEDS to overtake Super by the end of the Switch’s lifespan so they know which one the fans truly want.
@FishyS Yeah I had the same idea - something for my dad and my nephews & niece alike. But if you already played it back on Wii it's disappointing how little effort they put into this one.
Metroid Dread is absent from that list... although being a more Nintendo fan focused property, and less of a family thing, I can kinda see why. Plus, most fans would have bought it physically, and likely nearer the launch. Right? Metroid is doing well, right?
Got a bunch of gift cards for Christmas. So I ended up finally buying one of the Gen 4 remakes (Brilliant Diamond). Besides the Exp Share always on, it's pretty much the same game. So I'm glad I waited for others to buy it for me 😂. Love Pokèmon. But I wish there were more of effort to had make these games much more.
After this and SwSh, I'm gonna give PLA some time after release before plunging in. Whereas Pokèmon mainline games use to be day one purchases, I'm happy to wait and see now
@GannonBanned if I were new to the Switch, I would probably buy Mk8d and Odyssey for sure. It faded away years ago tho.
Happy to see no Metroid Dread on there.
@Rpg-lover
Consider it more like "merchandise" than a "game" in a sense.
@Enigk
The only reason the PS2 has that many sales was because it was the cheapest DVD player on the market and that it was a hybrid between a DVD player and a game console. A win-win for everybody, including the non-gamers.
I have some doubts that a Switch Pro would boost sales by that much, unless that's how Nintendo intends to extend the Switch's lifecycle rather than introducting a brand new console.
@Meteoroid I'm sure I read somewhere that Switch only gets an annual a FIFA game because it was part of the licencing agreement that it has to be on all major current platforms. They don't seem to be too bothered about any other sports games on Switch so I doubt EA would bother otherwise.
@GannonBanned SMO was in an e-shop sale a few months before Christmas so it would have last charted high back in October
@ModdedInkling don’t forget Sony also sold PS2’s for years marked down to $50 at wal marts and blockbusters next to huge amounts of discount games so tons of people picked one up because hey, why not?
@dmcc0
Either that or it's just really easy money to just copy and paste a game (just like how certain game reviews here are copy and pasted from a previous game)
@Bailey5000 it's okay buddy, I understand you 100%.
@ModdedInkling exactly.
@dmcc0 good point made. Well let's hope when a new nintendo console releases anytime in the future, we're going to get a better version of ps4 quality fifa nonetheless.
@Rpg-lover Yup, FIFA25 Legacy Ed. on Switch 2 will probably be a straight port of PS4 FIFA22 with updated squads 😉
And yet I have zero interest in any of these titles, lol
I'm seeing a lot of dislike towards Big Brain. I guess that makes sense; if you have an account on here, you're probably old enough to not be the target audience here. I want to say that it's targeted more towards younger kids, maybe as an upgrade for the original game where you're learning, but with friends, and on a DS. I haven't actually played Brain vs Brain so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about
@GannonBanned I also think that the PS2 continued to sell in regions with lower average incomes as the PS3 was super expensive and the 360 had red ring issues (and was expensive). The PS2 with its unbelievable game library, easy hackability, DVD player and yearly FIFA’s made it an attractive proposition in these markets.
Interesting. They're all good games having played them. Either brilliant or good that is. I love Big Brain Academy.
I feel so out of the loop. I don't have any of these (unless you count the Wii U versions of 3D World and MK8).
@ModdedInkling The Switch is the little engine that could. It's only now coming up to its 5th birthday. It's still got at least a couple of years in it before we get a sequel. Depends on how much the pace slows over those 2 years though. Let’s look again next year. I'll be the first to admit I was way off buy I like to remain hopeful.
Why do they list BDiamond ans SPearl seperately? Do we know their combined sales?
@ModdedInkling today the Wii has been dethroned. rip wii.
@Bailey5000 yes don't listen to the hate enjoy yourself buddy
FIFA so high up is shocking. I get there’s no other options on Switch but Christ, they don’t even hide the fact that it’s the same game as the last few versions just with team updates/new kits and a different front end. I know a lot of kids won’t know or even care what’s going on with this and the same goes for a lot of adults, which just makes it even worse. And if you do know how bare-bones an “effort” they put in every year and still support it…more power to you? I guess?
Sick of EA. I wish Nintendo would get their own sports games going again like they did in the SNES/N64/GameCube days, Switch is crying out for an NHL game at the very least.
@NintendoWife "Brain Academy, by the way, is shockingly light on content. Bought it for the family for Christmas and after 10mins you feel like you've seen everything."
I played the demo with family over the holidays. We played the 3 available games for a while. When I explained "The full game is only $40 CAD", the reaction from one of them was "$40??? Maybe $4."
But then I introduced them to Smash and we played into the wee hours with glee.
Funny how Pokemon Diamond sold much better than Pearl.
@NintendoWife You might be missing the point of this game, bro.
Big Brain Academy is not an epic adventure with new things to discover, it's an experience in which you practise and improve at the mini-games, which is fun and rewarding for many reasons.
Multiplayer with three other friends on the higher difficulties is where this game truly shines, especially when everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses in different games. Everyone agreeing to play every game on Elite difficulty really raises the stakes, and this amplifies the joy in clutching out a victory or the frustration in making a mistake.
I hope you can find friends who enjoy this game like we did, because it really is a unique treat
@toasterbath No generally I get that. But having played it a lot on Wii, this one repeats too much of the content. And it’s not put together particularly lovingly. For example I’d like to play one particular challenge several times in a row, but there‘s no mode to quickly do that. You always have to go through the selection screen and tons of dialogue.
@NintendoWife With respect, that's completely wrong my man. In practise mode, after finishing your game, press Y to replay it. The prompt for it is in the bottom right corner of the results screen.
For multiplayer, choose the non-roulette option and you can replay the exact game over and over again, providing the selecting player elects to do so.
I definitely disagree on the content not being put together lovingly - but we won't go anywhere arguing over that. Though If I may say, you do sound a bit jaded as far as this game goes. Shame you don't like it, good luck with the rest of your games.
