Splatoon 3 is one of the many anticipated first-party Nintendo releases this year, and during the latest Direct broadcast, we got a look at the brand new Salmon Run co-op mode.
This next wave will feature fresh features - including all sorts of new bosses like a giant Salmonid and also many other creatures which will require a lot of teamwork to defeat.
The Salmon Run mode was originally introduced in the second game and saw you put in a shift for Grizzco Industries. Splatoon 3 will launch on the Nintendo Switch this summer.
Are you looking forward to returning to the series' Salmon Run mode? Tell us down in the comments.

I kind of wish this was part of the Splatoon 2 updates back when I begrudgingly subbed to NSO.
I used to play Salmon run almost every day with a friend back when Splatoon 2 came out. Super fun once you really get the hang of it. Definitely keen to jump back in when Splatoon 3 comes out, the new enemies look fun.
Salmon Run was my favourite mode in Splatoon 2 so I'm absolutely excited about this. I just hope it gets a little more love this time like regular multiplayer did!
Salmon run was great but an endless version with local support would be nice
Neat more bosses.
This still just looks like Splatoon 2.5 to me.
I’m a bit obsessed with turf wars (1400hrs)… so I’ve still yet to play any mode or mission that isn’t turf wars between Splatoon 1 and 2 😆
Maybe Splatoon 3 I step out a little.. lol
Very unconvinced as to why they had to come out with a new Splatoon instead of just making small updates to Splatoon 2. Surely you'd want to save it for the next console and avoid splitting the fanbase?
@iLikeUrAttitude the acceptable nature of the Splatoon series to me is just more Splatoon. New maps and some new flourishes. I don’t think it’s meant to reinvent and overhaul the graphics and systems. I don’t see it as that type of series.
Still no date... it'll probably release this summer, I guess. Perhaps it would've been better as DLC for Splatoon 2, releasing only one installment per console, but I suppose they've decided to milk the franchise before the audience grows too old.
@iLikeUrAttitude Like people said 2 was just 1.5, so.. this is 1.7?
And in the end those people buy every Call of Duty every year, and Fifa.
Splatoon 3 Salmon Run Next Wave & Knuckles featuring Dante from Devil May Cry
@LordPieFace avoid splatting the fanbase. FTFY.
Am I the only one disappointed in this is what they showed? This could and should of been an update to splatoon 2, let me guess half of the maps in the proper multiplayer mode will be from splatoon 1 and 2?
This is my most exciting confirmation from the direct.
Can't wait to yell "Kobe!" as I'm throwing eggs into the basket. Every time.
I predicted this in the Nintendo Direct Predictions post! Well, not about the story mode, but the Salmon Run and the release date still match up.
@iLikeUrAttitude Splatoon 2 was really more like 1.5 if you played the original on Wii U. I hope to be pleasantly surprised when the new game comes out, but the franchise seems to be advancing at half steps.
It's all looking too similar to Splatoon 2. But that's no problem because that's what everyone said about that game looking too similar to the first entry, before a dedicated Direct came.
Something tells me that in this game content will be king, the presentation must be part of that ambition too.
@iLikeUrAttitude They definitely have more to show Im sure
I don't get the complaints that Splatoon 1, 2 and 3 are too similar. Yes, other games would add new enemies or entire game modes in a free update. But those games also want you come back again and again so you keep buying their cosmetics for 5, 10, 20€ a piece.
Nintendo only asks for a one time payment and then you get a year or two of content and events at no additional cost. So it's only fair that they come out with a new game every few years.
@UltimateOtaku91 You're definitely on your own. You don't seem to grasp how these multiplayer arena shooters work. You think this is bad? Take a look at Activision whom pumps out a new Call of Duty every year. Nor can you even properly judge a game still in development with some short trailers.. I think if you had your way they would change up the formula so much that the hardcore fanbase(like myself) would revolt. I want new and FRESH, but also want the core game to be the same Splatoon I fell in love with on the Wii U 7 years ago. Thank you.
SUPER happy to see Salmon Run returning! I thought for sure the game would come out in June though haha. It technically could, but considering Mario Strikers, I’m betting on July.
Looking awesome, out of all the games announced coming this year Splatoon 3 is one of my most anticipated
I will only buy Splatton 3 if the game has OFFLINE MODES (similar to online modes) AGAINST BOTS.
Seeing the “little buddy” in the initial trailer reveal actually scared me. I thought they were going to get rid of salmon run; it’s my favorite game mode in splat 2.
At least I can Rest In Peace now that I know they’re making it even better.
I will not buy this game if it is online-centric like Splatoon 2. At the end the day, the game should be cheaper or there shouldn't be a subscription to pay.
@NinChocolate To each their own of course, but I find Ranked Battle and Salmon Run to be FAR more fun than Turf War. After I unlock Ranked, the only time I touch Turf is when there is a Splatfest.
Glad to see they're keeping the co-op horde mode. It was my favorite mode by far, but hopefully they'll get rid of the "limited time" nonsense so we can play as much as we like.
@vio good to hear that. I will have to try those modes to find out how much I like them. But I’m afraid if I like them as much as turf war I’ll never play any other game. The game is too addictive for me as is lol
I don't understand why this is a new game. They've already announced a massive DLC for Mario Kart 8, can't they just do the same with Splatoon 2 ??
Salmon Run was the best thing about Splat 2, extremely happy to see it returning.
That's wonderful!
Satisfied! Take My Money Already!
@vio as a fellow diehard, i concur. I don't want the core gameplay to change, i love splatoon for what it tis
