Fans of futuristic racing games like Wipeout, Fast RMX, and even Nintendo's famous series F-Zero might want to keep an eye on Redout 2.
Yep, a sequel to the original title by 34BigThings has been officially locked in for the hybrid platform during Saber Interactive's latest games showcase. It's arriving on all platforms in 2022 and promises to offer lightening fast speed, stunning visuals and a killer soundtrack.
Redout 2 is further described as the "premier anti-gravity racer" and is also a tribute to classic arcade racing games. Additionally, it will feature an extensive single-player campaign, competitive multiplayer, deep control systems and robust customisation.
You can learn more about the universe of Redout in our review of the original game. Is this a sequel you would be interested in playing on the Switch? Leave a comment down below.

Looks pretty smooth to play like Fast RMX
The first one was a giant letdown visually and in performance. I'm still playing FAST RMX (heck even FAST Racing League on Wiiware) to this day. If the final build is 30FPS with noticeable dips I wouldn't even bother. I would rather play FH5 on 30 since it's more consistent performance-wise.
Looks like another wipeout clone, so I’ll probably give this a pass; after FastRMX, it was pretty clear being a high-speed sci-fi racer wasn’t enough to serve as an F-Zero substitute, at least for me anyway.
On the other hand though, it’s nice to see someone’s still interested in the sci-fi racer sub-genre.
The demo of the original didn't excite me so we'll see about this. I would have bought the original on Switch if it ever got a hefty discount. It never did so perhaps they don't want you to play it.
FastRMX is fantastic. The original RedOut was also compared to FastRMX. I remember being excited about it when it was announced, yet only playing it a few minutes on release before deciding it wasn't worth my time. So I'm more likely to take a step back and seek out F-Zero again 😉
Those are good news but I hope this time they will do a better job with the Switch version, otherwise I will play it somewhere else. But I am really happy to see Redout is back in 2022 to give us more anti-gravity racing YESSSSS
Seeing this reminds me how badly i want a new Fzero game.
Given the HUGE delay of the original (with near radio silence from the devs), only to be a visual mess... I'm hopeful but extremely sceptical about Redout 2.
If you like Wipeout controls... the Redout controls and ship movements feel to me like an extremely sub-par experience.
I don't find that game nice to look at. The colour scheme and general aesthetic is a bit too jazzed up for me, like it's been designed for people who drink Monster energy drinks and dream of pimping their ride. And the tracks look too narrow.
After watching the trailer I'm not seeing what's next gen about this (especially after watching the Matrix Tech Demo), It looks like a fairly generic F-Zero/Wipout clone.
The original Redout is a great game... the switch port was pretty bad. I played it on the ps4 and its a very nice antigravity racer, with solid handling and track design. Like f-zero or wipeout, it has its own learning curve and its own handling, those expecting it to mimick one of those, are going to be disappointed, it has its own feeling.
Doesn't look as good, or as fast, as F Zero GX.
The original one runs and looks good on Xbox One X and Series X/S. The only problem is that the controls and physics are not natural nor intuitive, not even for futuristic ships. I hope that the sequel is better. I think they wanted to make the game too serious and messed the controls up. I like it but both F-Zero and Wipeout are more fun. Extreme-G is awesome but it was seen last time in 2003.
Lets hope this doesn't end up like the original Switch version and go missing for years
I was interested in the original but I skipped it due to Nicalis involvement, looks like they changed publishers so maybe I'll pick this one
@iLikeUrAttitude I actually prefer RMX but redoubt is pretty good. Depending on the price it may be worth picking up. Maybe worth no more than 30 usd if it’s like the original. We will have to see what all it has
The prequel on Switch was disappointing and only runs at 30fps which is slow compare to the silky smooth 60fps of Fast RMX. Hopefully this one fare better or else they shouldn't even try.
Nothing can substitute F-zero.
@SSGodLink I agree with you, yet the trailer was presenting the game in 60fps
@FullMetalWesker It is the characters, the cars, and the world of F-Zero that makes it forever stand out. Nothing similar will ever compete with F-Zero for me.
@The-Chosen-one If a new F-Zero ever gets announced the Nintendo Life comment section for the article will explode. Like for real, it will blow up. There will be injuries.
@adorabunny It likely isn't running on Switch, they usually show the better version in the trailer to entice you. The game is also coming to PS5, PS4, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
Imagine being an artist and you've just finished a painting. And you get swarmed by people, "OMG, this isn't a Picasso! Why didn't he make a Picasso? I'm just going to be angry online until we get a new Picasso!"
F-Zero fans, that's what you sound like.
The trailer implies that you can ram other players but doesn't make it crystal clear. It's one of my favorite things to do in F-Zero X, Sleeping Dogs, and most of the Burnout games. Frankly (and I may have said this before), I'd be satisfied with remastered ports of F-Zero X (plus the 64DD content), F-Zero GX, and F-Zero AX. I know the chances of that ever happening are slim at best, but a girl can dream.
@NullPointerExcep What did Nicalis do?
The original plays and looks great on my Xbox One X.
However, the Switch version was massively delayed to the point I was amazed when it finally released... When it did the graphics were really poor even for Switch standards..
I am surprised the sequel will be getting a Switch release after last time..
I'm not expecting much for the Switch version, but I hope I'm wrong.
THANK GOD! I played F-Zero for the first time on Switch Online, but I want more! Excited for F-Zero X on the expansion pack, but I won't have a kidney to spare if I want to get Persona 3 on PS2. This timing is perfect for me.
@FlashBoomerang - To be fair, neither this, nor Fast RMX are really trying to be a substitute for F-Zero, instead leaning more towards WipeOut, so if someone were to actually attempt to replicate the track design and controls of F-Zero, then who knows? but for now, no-one (that I know of anyway) has really tried, so it's not surprising that they haven't succeeded.
@Gitface - "It is the characters, the cars, and the world of F-Zero that makes it forever stand out. Nothing similar will ever compete with F-Zero for me."
Fair enough; for me, it's more the level/track design and controls that make it stand out to me. F-Zero features much sharper corners and bends, that make for a much more engaging, and challenging experience overall, compared to the WipeOut approach, where it's more about gentle curves and straight lines, with vehicles that control less like cars, and more like projectiles.
@FullMetalWesker
I agree with your summary!
F-Zero X is better. 60fps and 30 cars on screen at once. I’ll enjoy playing it portably on Switch NSO when it drops. Hopefully it’s the February game.
@BlueOcean Yep, I love Extreme-G. Tends to be unfairly overlooked. The series died when good ol' Acclaim went bust many moons ago. Shame no one will buy the rights and release a collection for modern consoles. BTW, it was not last seen as a Gamecube launch title. The final game was Extreme-G Racing Association(the 4th), which came out in 2003. Acclaim went under the following year and thus no more Extreme-G..
@DrDaisy there's an article here mentioning workplace problems, devs being ghosted, game patches not being submitted
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2019/09/nicalis_investigation_reveals_tales_of_ghosting_slurs_and_mistreatment_of_staff
A more recent one here from a dev that had to re-release their game with an updated version because the original one was delisted by Nicalis and it can't be updated anymore

Prediction: F-zero GX will still be better.
@vio It's great to see another Extreme-G fan! You're right, the last one is Extreme-G Racing Association (2003). I have that one, too. It's sad that no one took care of Acclaim and this fantastic series that it's one of the best in the genre and should get much more attention. The first game is my favourite futuristic racing game ever.
@FullMetalWesker I just want a new one SO bad…. I would even drop money on a remaster of either X or GX with added online support at this point.
@SSGodLink The first was far less ambitious, ran at 30 and didn't look good.
Looks about the speed as Wipeout, which is slower but more technical. I'll pick it up.
I would love it if we could get Star Wars Racer Revenge - the sequel to Episode 1 Racer. Those games are fast paced and control really well.
@BlueOcean @InAnotherCastle At first I was thinking the same about the controls but after some time I learned how to take turns properly and how to upgrade the vehicles. Right now I am flying through the tracks like a bullet and I rarely touch the walls. It's a difficult game and it takes time and dedication to get good at it, but that's not a bad thing, isn't it? It's like a Dark Souls game, you need to practice a lot and learn the progression system, but once you get it the game shines. Don't expect it to give you instant gratification, this is a long term experience and that's why I like it. I will be very disappointed if they casualize the sequel, we already have Mario Kart for that. Also, those expecting an F-zero clone are going to be disappointed for sure, but that's not the game's fault. F-zero is amazing and it's my favorite game of all time but let's face it, Nintendo is not the same anymore, they only focus on the casual market now. Those who just wait for an F-zero will just get disappointed
@BoostPower good points. I remember controls as well as performance being turn-offs back then. I'll consider the sequel when released and reviewed, or revisit old one
@BoostPower I will come back to Redout and give it some more time and try to work the techniques out because the game doesn't explain much.
I totally agree about Nintendo not being the same. The Switch era has reconfirmed that the new Nintendo are focused on cash grabbing and the casual mainstream market. Mario Kart has become more and more casual to the point I don't think it's a racing game anymore and as long as they keep selling the Wii U port like hot dogs, they won't bother with a new one nor do they bother with Wave Race, 1080º nor F-Zero.
the most important characteristics of F-Zero to me:
1. fast
2. fluid/60fps
3. a lot of vehicles (8-12 aren't enough. F-Zero X/GX rock because its like 30)
4. no weapons
5. and of course amazing designed tracks
Fast did some of these things, but the polarity-mechanic always interrupted the whole racing flow to me and made it feel like some forced mechanic to make it stand out of the competition with no real value for the gameplay. But maybe I ned to give it another shot.
RO2 looks nice visually, but that won't resemble the Switch graphics. So the game might not run as fluid, won't have 29 opponents ... so quite some big things missing.
by the way I would like someone to remake Extreme G 2 with modern tech. This game felt pretty interesting and very punishing, but it also didn't have the best framerate which shouldn't e a problem today.
@BlueOcean @InAnotherCastle that's nice! there's a lot to enjoy in Redout, remember to chose the "classic control scheme" and turn off the music. Sorry, maybe it's just me but I hate the music in that game xD Maybe you don't like the game anyway, but there's nothing wrong with that ;D
@BoostPower I bought it for Xbox so I definitely will give it another chance and remember to choose the classic control scheme! The game runs and looks like a dream on Xbox One X and Series X/S. The problem is that not even setting up the ship for each mission is clear. The menus are vague and ambiguous. I couldn't figure out the "redout" controls that change depending on the vertical angle. The game does a very poor job explaining itself.
@valcoholic The Extreme-G games are great. I would love to play 1 and 2 with a smoother frame rate but even emulators have troubles with them. Of course, I'd love the series to come back (didn't Turok come back after the same amount of years?) and I'd buy every remaster of this series.
@BlueOcean I agree, the game doesn't explain anything, I was also confused at first. I hope the sequel solve this with a training mode or something. You need to upgrade your vehicles stats to the maximum and the power ups are upgradeable as well. I recommend to upgrade the magnetic stabilizer to the maximum 4/4 first.
@BoostPower You can't have certain upgrades depending on the missions. So I go for the magnetic stabiliser first, got it. What about those weird redout moments when the screen changes colour, what are you supposed to do?
@BlueOcean if you use the "classic control scheme" you still need to use the left stick up and down according to the track angle to avoid losing speed and energy. You can use the left and right shoulder buttons to make sharp turns. That's much more intuitive than using the other control schemes which use the right stick
You are not allowed to use power ups on the "pure" events. You can upgrade the magnets on your vehicle to get more grip also.
@BoostPower Cool, thanks, I'll try all that 😊.
@BlueOcean I am happy to be helpful. Enjoy the game!
@BoostPower Happy new year! I'm trying the game again. Currently, my objective is "Calima Challenge - Last Man Standing". I got silver but not gold yet. I wait for gold before playing the next event (difficulty: redout). I had already set controls to classic but I hadn't used the magnetic stabiliser which now is fully upgraded and set up. As active powerup, I have tried them all but I don't know which is better, what are your favourites? Also, how do you know when turbo and the active powerup are ready to use?
I have to agree about the music. I like electronic music but the soundtrack is generally cheap and amateur, like no made by a real musician.
