Next year Nintendo is jumping "back into the ink" with the release of Splatoon 3. Yes, in case you missed it, the third entry in the insanely popular squid shooter series is currently in development.
If you've been wondering how progress has been going on the latest entry, we've got another update, well...kind of. It's a quick note over on social media from Nintendo - wishing all the Inklings (and Octolings) out there a happy holiday from the Splatoon 3 team. So, we guess progress is chugging along nicely.

When Splatoon 3 does finally splash onto the Nintendo Switch, it'll introduce fans to the new 'Splatlands' region and 'Splatsville' (the new city). The third game will also introduce new weapons, customisation options and power-ups.
Will you be returning to the world of Splatoon when the third game arrives on Switch next year? Tell us in the comments below.

I'm totally getting this one since I missed out on 2.
Probably the game I'm least excited for next year, but eh.
Probably the biggest upcoming Switch game that isn’t BoTW 2. 2022 shaping up to be another good year for Nintendo.
My hype is real. My body is ready.
You don't need to tell me to get excited because I already am.
This game launching is what will finally convince me to restart my Nintendo Online subscription. It was really rare that I played anything online other than Splatoon 2. And considering I still have the original on Wii U, even at $20, keeping the subscription going didn't seem worth it.
Kirby and BotW2 are what I'm waiting for.
Really enjoyed the first two Splatoons, so definitely excited for this. Really digging the 'splatlands' setting thus far.
The original Splatoon became an obsession for me. From the original Splat Test or whatever it was called, until I got my Switch in Summer 2017, I couldn't get enough. It's for sure my most played game of all time, around 1200 hours (although Rocket League is currently 5 hours shy of 1000 hours and will definitely overtake it). I even had a Splatoon face plate on my Gamepad. Splatoon 2 didn't grab me in quite the same way but even so, it's still somehow my 2nd most played game on Switch at 350 hours or so. I haven't played it in ages but I'll try and get back into it in the build up to part 3, which will surely take the series to the next level.
Something I'd like to see is a larger hub to explore. Inkopolis is such a fantastic setting. In my opinion, the hub in Splatoon 2 has the best graphics Nintendo have ever put out. It looks incredible and unlike the main game and the vast majority of Nintendo games, it even has anti-aliasing. Nary a jaggy or flicker to be seen. Although it does only run at 30 fps while in the hub.
I'd love to play a Nintendo style GTA in Inkopolis.
And bring back Flounder Heights, Saltspray Rig and Urchin Underpass. Loved those maps.
Yes yes, we already know
If I get Spatoon 3, I can put it next to Splatoon 2 and gather twice as much dust with them.
My Splatoon 2 has also collected 1000 hours of dust, I mean playtime. It's playtime. Rocket League, too.
@WoomyNNYes Finally secured Platinum rank. Only took me 980 hours or so. Now I feel like I can achieve diamond as I'm still dominating in lots of games.
Looking forward to it but I really hope they get rid of the hourly stage rotation. I don’t sit down and play games all day so I’d like to have more than two stages to play online when I play. If they make it so you can que up with a friend and always be on the same time, that would be nice too.
Outside of that, if the stages have unique themes and the single player is anything like the Octo-expansion, then I’ll probably become addicted to this. I’m not unbelievably excited but I’m looking forward nonetheless.
Genuinely never really understood the love for Splatoon. Played a bit of 2 but it didn’t grab me. I’ve dipped in and out of Counter Strike, Siege, Overwatch and stuff over the years and they all felt like they had loads more depth. I dunno, maybe I just need to get that expansion thing and play the single player.
Im mostly looking to BOTW 2, Eldan Ring and the MH Rise expansion but this is definitely on the list too, not as much as the others but I'm still looking forward to it.
@OorWullie Nice! Nice. Congratulations. I was really psyched when I broke into platinum. It was exciting. I feel like I've hit a plateau, lately. I'm still teetering between Plat III and Diamond I. Things I need to work on: offense, jumping off walls to hit the ball(more awkward stuff), backboard clears, to name a few. I've got 1600 hours.😁
@nessisonett For me, Splatoon is all about the ranked modes. Rainmaker and Clam Blitz especially. Once you rank up a few levels and start playing with /against better players the game really starts to reveal itself. It's surprisingly deep and even after hundreds of hours of playing it, you're still learning.
@nessisonett
The simplicity and uniqueness of Splatoon is the reason why it's fun. Every now and then, people just want to relax to play a game where they run and gun. I guess Splatoon took that concept very literally and reinvented something different than any shooter game out there.
Complexity is thing that often plagues many shooter games nowadays. Call of Duty is especially at its worst when it comes to something like this. People want a simple shooter game, and Splatoon is one of those.
I'm trying to prime my friends into getting it so we can do a messy and terrible team of hilarity
@WoomyNNYes I seemed to hit a plateau after 300 hours and for the next 600 odds, I thought I'd reached my level. In the last couple of months though, I've improved a fair bit. My aerial game is much better and some of the saves I can pull off are unreal. But yeah, when it comes to the awkward stuff, I've got a long way to go.
What a great time to wish everyone a very happy Octivus!
OH! Or Squidmas! Whichever holiday you...um...happen to celebrate.
Reminds me, I need to finish S2's DLC.
I can't seem to get my Zelda-crazy age 30+ friends who grew up with N64s into Splatoon. They just seem to overlook it for some reason. But it's one of Nintendo's best IPs, hands down.
Great. Now remind me why I should care. You know, with something that tells me how this game is different from Splatoon 2.
I’ll get excited when they announce some sort of local multiplayer.
If there's singleplayer content, then sure. Otherwise, pass.
Nah i'll pass the first 2 games were a borefest
@Bolt_Strike Based on what we're seeing, this game has had much more of a development cycle than Splatoon 2 got. I mean Splatoon 2 came out so soon after the first, presumably to give the Switch another good launch game, so it felt like a glorified Splatoon 2.0 in many ways.
This game has more new mechanics, looks like it'll have a much more signifcant new story... if anything will really shake up Splatoon in a good way, it'll be this game. Probably.
Splatoon deserves more credit..the shooter genre is dominated by guns. Nintendo managed to create a fresh take on a redundant genre without depending on kill counts and guns as weapons. It’s not for everyone but they deserve credit for taking a risk and adding this amazing series to gaming. The replay ability of this game is understated, I played COD for years and gameplay of Splatoon is just so much more creative and fun. Looking forward to Splatoon 3, gonna be a major 2022 for Nintendo gamers
@OorWullie
I always felt Splatoon was the Best thing that came out of the Wii U era. I too was one of the early adopters and it’s been really cool to see this game evolve. Name another family friendly shooter…exactly! It’s special game and the hook whether ranked or turf wars or even salmon run is one of the addicting of any title. Going to be interesting how they continue to evolve this series.
I'm absolutely excited. One of my most wanted games and I can't wait to dive in. I'm expecting it to show up in the first Direct of the coming year and like a March release date or something. Can't wait to try out the new bow weapon, though my main will probably still be the splatling weapons.
@Semudara @Bolt_Strike Also Splatfests if you care about those, which will not be coming to 2 anymore but definitely will come to 3. Which I personally always loved and haven't missed a single one yet.
@Semudara I'm not really seeing it. It just looks like a glorified Splatoon 3.0 in the same way that Splatoon 2 is a glorified Splatoon 2.0. There seems to be a few subtle changes to the weapon selection and movesets, but that's about it. Really not all that much.
@Yosher Splatfests have been a thing since the first game though, that's nothing new and different from Splatoon 2.
I'm still not feeling it as it looks so similar to Splatoon 1 and 2. I hope they show something that heavily differentiates it from the first two games because right now it looks like it should have simply been an addon for Splatoon 2 to me.
Also, please get rid of the map rotation system already.
Damn howdy, I’m ready! Confirm this!
@Qwertyninty
Yes, it would be a lot easier to get my mates into it if we could have a local game with bots to fill it out. Although modes etc have been used to push online, I think they would sell more with robust local multi, (look at MK8).
@SuperZeldaFun
Let's hope it's not because the new game is a fully exploitative live service with lootboxes..
Now if the inklings could only push the Pikmin into their 4th installment.....
@Snatcher probably still worth getting Splatoon 2. People still play it constantly.
I'm so tired of all the 2d side scrolling nonsense on the switch. We need more open world, explorative, big games.
Might pick this up if it has decent online (more than 2 maps at a time) and a decent horde mode.
It also needs native voice chat. Playing team based shooters is almost impossible when you are stuck on a team with randoms up against a squad that is obviously communicating and I hate having to rely on discord to find a squad and then use my phone to talk.
I bought the Switch to play in bed, I dont want to rely on multiple devices just to get the same experience that I'm used to on my PlayStation or Xbox.
I bought 2 and whilst I enjoyed it, I never gave it enough playtime. What's the game matching like these days? Are the servers still busy enough
2 Splatoon games on Switch before...
A Star Fox game
A new 2D Mario game
A new Donkey Kong game
A new Mario Kart game
A new 2D Zelda game
Not meant as a criticism, more an observation and also pointing out that Nintendo are so unpredictable! I'd have expected one of the above before a second Splatoon on Switch.
I think Splatoon fans should take a moment to realise how lucky they are next year!
Totally forgot about Splatoon 3 being a thing.
Could they remind us when Botw2 is coming to the Switch. No! Though not.
I wish they'd offer the Splatoon 3 content as a big DLC pack for Splatoon 2 (a bit cheaper than the standalone game). A little thank you to the current fans.
Trust me, I'm excited.
@Moistnado Shameful.. No other words for you .
@Jamesonn They
already gave us tons of free DLC for 2.
@Jamesonn why? For both the DLC and thank you?
@SuperZeldaFun Completely new arenas, a new mode or two, a new hub, new weapons, new outfits and a new single player campaign. They can't put all of that in a 20 bucks dlc.
@Bolt_Strike They're nothing new but they have effectively stopped doing them for both Splatoon 1 and 2, so if you want more Splatfest goodness (without hacks) you're gonna have to go to Splatoon 3 once that drops.
I haven’t played Splatoon but really was put off by lack of couch co-op. I don’t play online and just feel like this game looks it is crying out for it
can't wait for the 3rd squid research direct in 2-4 months!
@Kayvoo yeah for me it’s a no buy if they don’t have some sort of local multiplayer. People have stated the hardware isn’t good enough for that. Well that’s not my issue or anything I can fix.
@RandomNPC For the most part, I don't try to get inside Nintendo's head. I don't think my mind could withstand the distorted reality. But I am going to rain on one of your hopes...
I can't see them adding native voice chat. As basic as that is, Nintendo seems weirdly stubborn in not getting with the times as far as online games are concerned.
I own Splatoon 2, no need for this.
This has reminded me I still haven't played the DLC for Splatoon 2, need to do that soon. Will be getting Splatoon 3 day one I think. Looking forward to more Splatfests again, I do miss them.
@Browny YES! BRING IT ON NINTENDO! I'LL GLADLY WAIT FOR YOU SPLATOON3!
@OorWullie really? I play ranked strictly for splat zones and tower control. My friends and I constantly check to see if those modes are available. If they aren't then we don't play lol.
Multiplayer arena shooters are small games, quick and easy to make, especially when splatoon 2 reuses most of the assets from the first game.
Besides, it also requires NSO to access your own internet so it is a real money spinner for Nintendo.
@Bolt_Strike i understand you, although I myself am excited and hope there are some huge upgrades we haven't seen yet. But if there aren't and this is an overglorified dlc it'll probably still widen the splatoon audience much further than a DLC on a 5 year old game goes especially with kids (I'm thinking of some of the e game tourneys my teacher friends hold). Regardless, big $ for the big N
My most anticipated Switch game of 2022.
