Update: A tweet from both the official Sonic Twitter account revealing the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie poster and another from Geoff Keighly himself have confirmed that, yes, the new Sonic game definitely will feature at The Game Awards 2021.
Too right — can you imagine the gamer outcry if he was a no-show after such an outrageous tease! Jim Carrey and Ben Schwartz will also be in attendance at the awards show on Thursday to present a new trailer for the upcoming film.
Original Story [Wed 8th Dec, 2021 02:30 GMT]: It's the 30th anniversary of the Sonic the Hedgehog series this year, and there's a rumour that Sega may go out with a bang at The Game Awards later this week.
According to a post over on Reddit, the following domain was recently registered - frontiers.sonicthehedgehog.com, and over on Steam the number of Sonic games has been updated from 34 to 35. It's led to fan theories that we might perhaps see Sonic the Hedgehog's new game at the annual awards show on December 9th. There's also the possibility of Sonic Origins getting some time in the spotlight.
"Sonic the Hedgehog Franchise page on Steam has updated the number of games - The number of games has updated from 34 to 35. This likely means we are in for some sort of reveal. With the website domain for Sonic Frontiers being claimed yesterday and the fact that they said we would get news on Sonic Origins this year, I think it’s a safe bet to assume both games are getting some kind of reveal soon."
If you're still not entirely convinced, the official Sonic the Hedgehog video game Twitter account has been exchanging tweets with the show's host and organiser Geoff Keighley:
The name "Sonic Frontiers" was previously trademarked in November, and this new Sonic game (due out in 2022) is rumoured to be an open-world adventure.
Do you think we'll see Sonic at The Game Awards later this week? Tell us down in the comments.

Please be a good sonic game! I do not need BOTW sonic, I just need lots of space to run, and a lot of Speed to do it.
I feel that it might be too soon. Hopefully it will be something else for now.
How about a good 3D Sonic game? Colors Ultimate is a glitchy mess and I am not gonna buy it at all until it gets completely resolved.
2D sonic games are apparently better like Sonic Mania.
So sonic at the olympics?
No more please! No more! How much more mediocrity do we have to endure?!?! Aren’t all the horrible Sonic games before this punishment enough?!?! 😫😫😫
When keleigh talks, I listen
Haha, caught these tweets a while ago, yep we're definitely getting SOMETHING Sonic related
If only they'd take SA2 and improve it, they were onto a winner there for 3D Sonic, though it was a fun game anyways.
@Snatcher hell I'll take another Unleashed (day time stages) or Generations type Sonic game at this point
I honestly don't get why they didn't make a Generations 2?
@liljmoore Those were good at least like my god.But for some reason they just can't get it right, its sonic, sonic=Speed.
@Snatcher I think part of the reason they've never really gotten Sonic right is because it's speed focused, the levels need to be either really big or really short (this is due to basic physics, speed = distance/time). The problem is that they don't seem to want to make them big enough to make them satisfying (although if the rumors are anything to go by, they may be changing their mind on that), so they either leave them really short like Generations or come up with other solutions such as filler gameplay styles (such as the Werehog or the alternate characters) or slowing some of the levels down with platforming or combat (as in Heroes, Colors, and Forces). What I think they need to do is either spend more time developing the games or get more out of their content in clever ways, such as adding collectathon elements to encourage you to revisit the same level multiple times.
More of Sega hyping crap up over nothing. First the Game Gear Micro crap, then the fog gaming arcade crap, then the mobile phone RPG, and now this crappy hype for a Sonic game that is more likely going to be garbage than anything. Just deliver Sega, at this point don't hype anything yet and just deliver. Once you master that then you could starting learning to hype again but for now stop hyping every little nonsense. You're killing your fanbase by hyping over nothing, just for once deliver okay.
@Bolt_Strike I disagree. I do believe they got the level design down pact with Unleashed.
The lvls had the right amount of length to them with good different sections to keep the speed going.
Generations shorted level design a bit but made up for it with multiple pathways.
Then with Colors they decided to go full on 2D really which wasn't a bad thing just unexpected.
I don't why they went away from that to Boom and Lost World( Lost world wasn't bad). And Forces man it felt like they were trying to back to what worked with Generations then just gave up at the end and didn't care.
I just want them to do what Sonic does best. High speed platforming
I’m excited and scared mostly because THIS happens every single goddamn time:

I toooooootally forgot about sonic Origins. Well geez now I’m excited all over again.
Oh geez. As someone who grew up with the original games, Sonic Mania was the best outing he's had in decades. I really hope this is a good game because honestly it feels like Sega just throws whatever at a wall to see what sticks.
I honestly don't know who keeps approving the questionable choices each 3d title has made. Whoever did Sonic Mania, put that guy in charge if this upcoming game bombs.
@Bolt_Strike I disagree, Its whole thing from the start, was to be fast, The classic sonic games did this very well as if you knew the whole level lay out, you should be able to get through it pretty quickly.
Unleashed did this perfectly, Maybe the controls were a little slippery at times but thats about it. And Wile I think things to collect in a sonic game would be cool, I think for the most part, What makes you go back and reply levels is to see how fast you can beat it then last time.
@liljmoore @Snatcher You're not understanding. There's only 8 Day levels in Unleashed (plus 1 hybrid Day/Night level) and only 9 boost levels in Generations. You can blow through those in less than an hour, maybe even both games' levels. Is that really worth $60? That's probably why they kept changing things up, they're trying to find a way to make the game last.
@Bolt_Strike It really depends on the person tho, If you want to go for the best times, S rank all the Stages, There is indeed a lot of content.
@Bolt_Strike What is worth 60$ is the reason why we have bland games just padding things out for no reason and bloated with repetitiveness and I mean the boring kind too. I don't want a bland sonic game that's trying to fill some 60$ of worth quota.
I would gladly pay 60$ for a Sonic game that is top quality even if it's not very long. People really should stop with the idea that more content even if it's terrible is worth 60$.
Sonic the Hedgehog: The Second Movie: The First Game.
@Bolt_Strike You seem to be forgetting the side lvls in Unleashed and Generations. Plus collectables and stuff. Is it worth 60. In all honesty no. But I'll gladly take those then the recent Sonic game.
Plus Sega can pull a Forces and Colors ultimate and just charge 40 instead 60
Plus all the forced changes is why we get games like 06 and Boom. Stick with what works and expand on that instead making everything 60 dollars worth
@liljmoore The side levels only add about another hour or two onto the gameplay, still not enough. You can blow through Generations in a day and Unleashed is only lengthy because of the Werehog.
To be clear, I'd much rather they stick with Unleashed/Generations style as well because that's brought them the most success (they're both the highest selling and most liked gameplay styles) and I personally like that style better myself (I also actually don't mind the Werehog gameplay either, but it definitely doesn't belong in a Sonic game. I'd love to see Nintendo do a DK game like that though). But for whatever reason, they don't seem to think they can stretch it out into an entire game so they keep experimenting with random crap.
The Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account also exchanges banter with the KFC Twitter account though.

Next reveal! Sonic will be a special pokemon in Pokemon Arceus. Lol 😂 gonna catch em all.
Oh man I can't wait for Sonic 3 and Kunckles: KFC Edition
@Dethmunk I can somewhat agree. It's why games built around the flash haven't been made. I think speed is really the issue in a 3d space. It works in 2d because you are only going in four directions.
Sonics greatest ability is also his hindrance. The only thing I can suggest is permanently reduce sonic's speed to where he is just faster than say a race car, but not as fast as the speed of light or whatever.
Either that or just keep each game 2.5d or 2d. There's just really no easy solution around it. Sonic is so fast that's hard to build a game to match the speed his lore suggests.
I've all but lost faith in the franchise tbh, Mania was a nice diamond in the rough but everything else I've seen/played from the Sonic franchise since 2004 has been kinda crap
@Bolt_Strike I've always thought the Sonic franchise would do well taking inspiration from driving sims tbh, even just the level scale and gameplay style. Throw in some bullet hell inspired skill based dodging and you'd surely end up with something that at least captures the essence of the marketing
Please dont be a 2d game
@Ultrasmiles I'd take a polished 2d game like mania over another mediocre 3d title like forces anyday.
I hope they didn't talk about anything sonic two and half years ago!
I’m equally hyped as I am scared.
@RupeeClock those tweets are kinda odd ngl
It probably won't be gameplay trailer perhaps, probably is just going to be a CGi Sonic trailer just like what Sonic Forces shown when it first was reveal. No way are they going to show gameplay otherwise people will instantly see the flaws.
Cool, I may get it on Xbox because I view those consoles as the successor to Sega consoles. I get that doesn't make perfect sense, but former Sega execs seem to feel that way, too.
I can't wait! Another Sonic game for a future episode of "Wha Happun?"!
Ahhhh, poor poor Sonic...
Why they don't just leave him alone?
@IronMan30 Original Xbox definitely felt like that with those early exclusives and the controller mirroring the Dreamcast pad with a second stick
Awesome, I liked the first Sonic movie and this poster gives me hope for the sequel too and even though I've been disappointed on many occasions, I'll always get excited for a new Sonic game.
This is the reason I'll now be paying attention the the game awards
Wild how a few years ago people wanted Nintendo to do the same thing with Mario. Sonic has been reduced to mostly terrible games since Sega went with the "lease a character" model.
@BrazillianCara Too soon? It's already been over three years since Forces was released.
@IronMan30 While the Xbox feels more like a Sega Dreamcast successor, the GameCube and N64 actually feels more like Sega Saturn successors. Xbox controller doesn't had C and Z buttons while GameCube and N64 does. To me Xbox doesn't feel like the next Dreamcast, to me Dreamcast just feels like an early Xbox what's with the online play and having a Microsoft UI. Also a lot of the idea on Saturn got implemented on the N64 such as the 4mb ram Expansion Pak which is similar to the Saturn 4mb ram cartridge which help gives improvements to some games.
Sega can make all the Sonic and Yakuza games they can churn out, but I personally couldn't care less. Until they start releasing remasters or new installments of classic IPs like Shining Force (SF III would be an instant buy for me), Skies of Arcadia, Dragon Force, and more of their iconic Arcade coin-ops, they're a has-been developer trotting out the same tired stuff. And all the titles they foisted off onto third parties and Kickstarters over the past 2-3 years don't count, by the way (although I guess if that was the only way to get the IPs I actually care about, it would be better than nothing,
which is what we have now).
All I want are ports of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 (ports of the original Dreamcast versions, not the DX remakes, the original Dreamcast versions played much much better). And a port of Sonic Heroes. Sonic Heroes is honestly the best 3D sonic game ever made. Apart from perhaps generations. But it's close either way.
For a new game they need to drop the ***** boost gameplay we've seen a dozen times or more, and just pull a sonic mania. There's tons of 3D sonic fan games which are absolutely stunning to look at and to play. Like Sonic Utopia. Go watch a video of Sonic Utopia and tell me you don't want that as a full game, an official Sega published sonic game. It'd be the best 3D sonic game ever made. It's got that absolute amazement of seeing it for the first time, just like with the original Sonic 1 when it came out. And it's the best translation to 3D of any sonic game. Seriously. And it's a FAN game. Just give the developers of Sonic Utopia free license to make a full official game like that. Hell you can even do yet another remake of green hill zone in it, because this time, for the first time ever since sonic 1, it'd actually feel fresh and breathtaking. It'd be new, even though it's another remake of green hill zone. Just go watch videos of Sonic Utopia, and download it and play it yourself.
But I'll settle for ports of sonic adventure 1 and 2 and a port of Heroes. For now anyway
@FroZtedFlakerZz at 2021 Game Awards, the trailer of sequel of live-action Sonic movie will be show and the next 3D mainline Sonic will also be show.
oh nice more disapointing 3D Sonic game.
@wHeReArEtHeChEeToS
The sonic cycle generally didnt really apply to games released after unleased and black knight (which is why those games are in the image)
Colours and generations were both released to overall very positive critical reception and while lost world and forces weren't nearly as well received they definitely were received better than the "dark age" games.
The colours remaster definitely felt it dropped the ball when it came to the port, in the case of the switch version the load times were quite a bit longer than the wii version and the game felt less stable.
this one being rumoured to be more open does give some concerns on how it will run on the switch, since with a fast paced game the last thing you want is objects spawning in late.
@Giancarlothomaz
Yeah... I know lol
@Mgalens You’re right, I guess I was just a little upset about forces, but I didn’t really consider colors or generations which, like you said, were well received by a lot of people. Also yeah for frontiers I’m only a bit worried about things like the game crashing or load time.
Time for another mediocre 3D entry to the franchise.
I AM SOOOOO HAPPY!!! ITS TIME TO GO.......FAST!
#SONICFRONTIERS
@Giancarlothomaz "I'll make you eat these words!"
@Specter_of-the_OLED the way they are hyping this up I'm sure they will show gameplay
I know its not gonna happen but Sonic Adventure was the perfect sonic formula they should have just kept 3d sonic games going in that direction. However, if this games has good gameplay like sonic generations it could work. I want Sonic to succeed so bad. He has the potential its just sega. I hope it works
