If you were hoping the original Monster Hunter Stories game might be released on the Nintendo Switch ahead of the sequel's release, don't get your hopes up.
Speaking to Gamereactor, Capcom's Ryozo Tsujimoto said the company had "no plans" to bring the original 3DS release from 2016 across to Nintendo's hybrid system.
"There are no plans at the moment to bring the original Monster Hunter Stories to the Nintendo Switch"
Fortunately, you don't have to worry if you haven't experienced the first game, as the sequel - Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin - features a completely new protagonist and storyline.
"there's a brand new protagonist and a new storyline...While it's set in the same world, the game has absolutely been designed so that players can jump straight into Monster Hunter Stories 2."
Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin will arrive on the Nintendo Switch in summer 2021.
When the sequel was announced in September, sales of the original game surged - making it the best-selling 3DS game on Amazon for a short period of time.
Were you hoping to see the original game make a return? Have you already played it or will you be going into this series with no prior knowledge of the 3DS release? Leave a comment down below.

Somehow I'm not shocked.
It's nice and all that we get a new story and junk, but that just means we're missing out on the first story. It's a shame for people who wanted to play it.
Thanks for reminding me about this game, wasn't sure what to play next, I think I'm gonna dust off my n2dsxl one more time
i was sure it was already ported
That's sad I think I had it on my 2DS or maybe it was the demo but I had a lot of fun with it but 1 and 2 aren't connected right cause if that's the case then then I gotta go find a copy of 1 and charge up my old 2DS
Makes sense, porting 3DS games requires a fair bit more effort and they don't look quite right when upscaled or even with a tad more polish. We've seen games when switched from 3DS to Switch development (SwSh, Three Houses) that look very poor. Best to focus resources on the new entry.
In other news: Capcom has no plans for making sense in the near future. "Please buy Resident Evil 4: inferior edition again as soon as we port it over to PS5 and Xbox XXX for a high price".
That's fine, so long as people can appreciate MHS2 as its own thing.
I had a hard time getting into the original, myself. I'm hoping the sequel is more engaging.
@BeautyandtheBeer it did get upscaled for mobile
I had no interest in playing the first game when it came out on 3DS and my only reason to play it now would have been if I needed to to understand the plot of the sequel but with that not being the case, I'm completely fine with it not being ported. I'd rather just jump straight into the second game which looks better from what I've seen so far.
@NinChocolate It did? Huh, though I guess with mobile you don't have the issue of blowing it up on a screen like with Switch.
Makes sense. They're just focused on bringing MHR to Switch/PC, Stories 2 to Switch/PC and MH6 to PS5/XS/PC
@BeautyandtheBeer I mean, I wouldn’t doubt it for SWSH, but I don’t think the timeline adds up for Fire Emblem- it was announced for Switch alongside echoes for 3DS, except so early that there was no title or footage for another year and a half, and scheduled a year earlier than it released. Even what we saw at E3 2018 was still notably different than the final product that released a year later. When announced, it couldn’t have been in full development for very long at that point, so even if it was originally intended for 3DS, the change would have been made very early on, before it would have significantly impacted the graphics.
I enjoyed my time with Monster Hunter Stories. The demo convinced me; it covers the first few hours of the game, and the save transfers to the full version. Stealing monster eggs, exploring, raising and customizing monsters with genes, the cel-shaded graphics, and a fun (albeit sometimes VERY random) battle system all make it a fun time. Just don't go in expecting a deep plot; for the most part, it's generic, Saturday morning cartoon material complete with an edgy rival and a bumbling villain. XD
Play it if you're curious and enjoy the demo, but this backs up that it isn't necessary to enjoy Wings of Ruin.
Meh, since it's a Final Fantasy type situation, I can live with not playing the first game.
I’m good with that.
While I enjoyed Stories on 3DS (what little I played, anyways), that was always a game that felt designed for 3DS. I don’t think it would hold up that well on an HD system. Not because of the graphics, although that’s part of it, but because of the gameplay mechanics and world design being limited to that of the 3DS hardware.
I’m jumping straight into Monster Hunter Stories 2 when it drops on Switch. The game looks absolutely gorgeous and is easily one of the best looking games I’ve ever seen on a handheld device.
But first, we get the real treasure- Monster Hunter Rise. I’ve been waiting so long for a new, AAA monster hunter built ground up for an HD hybrid portable system (with gyro aiming!). MHGU was incredible, but after World, it was time for the portable series to advance. And boy did it ever. MH Rise looks like GOAT material.
Just think- we’ll be playing a demo in 60 days!
I started playing Monster Hunter Stories in September, and I'm still playing it, at around 70 hours in. It rivals Fantasy Life as my most favorite 3DS game ever. There is always something to do, new gear to earn and upgrade, new monsters to slay or befriend. The gene system is clever, with new abilities monsters earn by absorbing the genes of other monsters, even those of dissimilar elements. You want to create a fire dragon that can breathe fire, throw balls of ice, has an electric breath attack, poison tail, and a sandstorm attack? Have at it!
Finished it on 3DS and there is a $19 Remastered HD version on both iOS and Android.
Rather they focus on #2 and MH: Rise.
@Munchlax I could have sworn Three Houses was originally scheduled for 3DS at some point then switched to the Switch. Sure I read it Nintendo related site but trying to find where aint easy. Maybe I was mistaken.
If it was solely scheduled for Switch then that makes it worse since visually it one of the worst from Nintendo's first party output but it was successful so that's all that matters.
What's stopping them? There's a mobile port
Is it really impossible for them to port it?
The first one created the idea and the base, which is good, but I'd rather them start over and make a whole new story. The first one was quite simple.
It's available on ios & Android.
Played if on the 3DS already. Good. Good game. Youngest and I quite enjoyed it.
I don't know why it wasn't when it got an iOS version...ah well.
The iOS port of monster hunter stories is one of the best games I’ve ever played on my iPhone. Solid 60fps, smooth controls, overall better looking graphics. It’s that good.
@BeautyandtheBeer Whilst Three Houses is one of my favourite games ever, I can’t deny that it absolutely seemed rushed, with a lower map count than the GBA games, a route 4 chapters shorter than the others, and 2 routes practically identical. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was part of the reason for the poor graphics, so I think that if they take their time with the next one, there should be a dramatic improvement in that department.
Not that bothered, I would rather Nintendo didn't see other publishers porting 3DS games for £50 on switch considering that they have stripped the wii-U Library now.
I enjoyed the first one and am looking forward to the sequel regardless if they're connected or not. I could never get into the mainline series, but after trying the demo for Stories, I thought it was pretty fun for a light RPG experience and the full game didn't disappoint. The graphics are also great, and I love the art-direction - the sequel looks gorgeous!
I played and loved Monster Hunter Stories on the 3DS. It was one of my favorites on the system. I’ve been wanting a sequel for years and can’t wait for next year.
A lot of people acting like the first one is some long lost gem that no one got or will get to play. It's readily available on multiple devices, one of which is a Nintendo one.
Still think it's a good idea to bring 3u and 4u to switch. People will have better experience with all MH games if they tried those two.
@Mr_Persona I just wish the switch was powerful enough to play World.
No plans "at the moment"
As long as they don't get funny ideas like dropping the 3DS version from eShop, I'm good.
Not surprising. But hey, Capcom, if you want to increase sales just drop the "2". Call it "monster hunter stories: wings of ruin" because there are people out there that won't touch a game if they haven't played the first even if they are different self contained stories.
@utopianmachine nice write-up!
I bought the first one when Rise got announced and all the games were on sale. I just started playing it the other day and I'm enjoying it. It has some of the typical bad kid's rpg stuff weighing it down, and a lot of the dialogue is pretty bad, (There's some good jokes in there, but I'm still laughing more at the clunky writing then the actual jokes) but overall it's a fun MH spin-off that feels like a nice change of pace, especially with my current hype addiction to MH during the wait for Rise.
They also don't seem to push any sort of "All monsters are our friends, don't slay them!" that would be super obnoxious for a game called Monster Hunter, which I was a little worried about. (Which is good because there's a lot of random encounters in this game)
Also, I get to ride a Velocidrome named CleverGirl into battle and win using the power of friendship
@Chowdaire Seriously. I was shocked that Nintendo didn't have any sort of "great for your first Pikmin game, no experience required!" at all in all the Pikmin 3 ads I git. A lot of people probsbly figured they'd be locked out of whatever was going on.
Capcom did port Monster Hunter Genereations Ultimate from 3DS to Switch, so they clearly have no issue with 3DS to Switch ports.
The Capcom leaks showed that they were apprehensive toward the kid-friendly character models of Stories 1 and made significant efforts to make Stories 2 look more "mature" while retaining a similar art style. This may explain why they have little intention of porting the original game to Switch.
I think they should, they are some people who have not played it so I think you will have to just read up on the wiki or buy if you still have a 3ds just buy it on there, At the end of the day I just hope that part 2 dose not connect tom much to the first one so you can play it even without playing the first.
C'mon Nintendo, I'm sure it's not that much of a problem to port 3DS games to Switch, especially without slightly updating graphics to suit better on docked mode... Such a shame.
Im kinda done with old games being re released. Just something new from now on.
Of course not. It’s going to be Super Ultra Mega Monster Hunter Stories DX HD Extened Editon.
@BeautyandtheBeer The reason it looked worse than other first party titles was probably cause Intelligent Systems didn’t have much HD experience up to that point. Just Color Splash. That’s why they enlisted Koei Tecmo.
SwSh/Let’s Go is probably a similar situation.
@ChaosBadger777 well if l was you l would be happy that they never did. I own the game and the graphics are good enough and would not want them to be downgraded and have the game lag. PS4 should be cheaper now days, so maybe you can ask for that for Christmas and get the game or get it on PC instead. PC one is more pricey for some odd reason
I never really understood this thought process of "If you make a new game, you OWE US ports of the previous installments!" If you wanted to play 3DS games, you should have bought a 3DS. Not to mention, the Switch is already loaded down with ports. Also, taking a game from the 3DS and porting it to the Switch would required a lot of work to make it look good by Switch standards. Alliance Alive, which looked fine on the 3DS, got ported over with no real improvements, and it looked terrible on the Switch.
@Kieroni Do people really think that? I've got loads of games that aren't the first of their series and I can only think of one that would leave new players at a loss for not have had playing the prior installment (Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse). Nintendo or otherwise, it's almost universal for sequels to either start up an all new story or to continue it in such a way that the previous games become unnecessary.
@Kalmaro Trust me, the Metroid Prime fans feel the same way.
@TheFox While a lot of game sequels don't have any sort of "gate" to understand what's going on, it'd be hard to know without having someone tell you. (Like Arlo did for Pikmin 3) Kingdom Hearts, Mass Effect, lots of narrative games would leave you lost out of order. And while games like Fire Emblem (to a lesser extent), Portal 2, and Okami Den don't lock you out of the story, per se, it can make you feel like you're missing some of the references.
I think in general, people like playing things in order.
Saving it for the Switch DS. 😉
Well at least we got Monster Hunter 5 I mean Rise.
@Mr_Persona I've got it on the PS4 and agree that the downgrades on the switch dwould ruin the game - which is why I said I wish the switch was powerful enough to run it.
Hopefully Rise can scratch that itch (not a fan of the older games)
@TheFox Mass Effect as well.
I'm happy to play the original game on my 3DS, as it's extremely well made. I wouldn't buy it again on the Switch.
Hmm I don't know if i wanna..
I'm ok with this, I already have the original on 3DS and it's still super easy for people to buy digitally off the 3DS eShop if they really want it. Given how large the 3DS install base is, and the fact that cheap 2DS' are still being sold in stores, the original isn't an impossible game for people to play if they really want to. Or just start fresh with this Switch sequel as the article suggests.
@ChaosBadger777 well so far the people who tried it which is for testing l believe and l haven't heard any problems yet. So hopefully it should be good with loading and no lagging or anything with online. I bet Rise will be a 10/10 when it arrives
@DarthFoxMcCloud l haven't play 4u online in ages. Is it still popular rn?
@TheWingedAvenger same here if they keep the online running
Wow, this aged quite well didn't it?
