As you might recall, the Champions amiibo line is getting a timely restock alongside the release of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. So what do amiibo actually do in the game? As explained in our preview:
"Amiibo can be used once a day on the main menu to gain materials and even weapons."
Destructoid further explains how this item delivery system allows you to scan up to five amiibo per day.
Scanning a Twilight Princess Link, for example, awarded Link in Hyrule Warriors with a low-level Soldier's Broadsword, while the Twilight Princess Zelda amiibo gave Zelda an Ancient Memory Part. When trying out other amiibo, like the Dark Souls one, the awards included a bunch of different items:
In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild amiibo scans also awarded the player with a bunch of different items. Will you be making use of amiibo functionality in this upcoming release? Tell us below.

So basically exactly how they worked in Breath of the Wild to begin with
Damn Koei Tecmo's really dedicated to acknowledging the continuity
Bit disappointed you can't get the classic tunics for Link but at least we can get weapons to fuse.
Yay amiibo once again proving their worth.....
Lessness
Wish Nintendo used more amiibo functionality in some of their games. It feels like they are forgetting about them.
Even though I love having just the figurines, I want to unlock things with my 100+ amiibo collection :/
I wish we could unlock the tunics
@Thundertron55 The tunics will almost certainly be unlocked in-game, as rewards for side-content, this is a Warriors game after all.
Make up your mind Nintendo. Are you still supporting Amiibo or not? I like them a lot and have wanted Nintendo to do more with them for years, but Nintendo has been sending very mixed messages. They wont let them die, but also wont make much use of them.
I am baffled that Pokemon never took advantage of Amiibo and make Pokemon Amiibo cards like the Animal Crossing cards.
I am bummed that Animal Crossing New Horizons uses Amiibo less than New Leaf did.
They never made like, a Street Plaza type game that makes use of all Amiibo either.
There was always so many possibilities with them and Nintendo always held back. I don't get it.
Just kill Amiibo Nintendo; the only reason they're popular again is because of Animal Crossing, but making Amiibo by yourself is so easy! I got a Bob Amiibo Card from Mercari and its homemade.
But if you do keep Amiibo alive Nintendo, please make a Warriors Amiibo game, that would be cool.
Bog standard Amiibo functionality, as expected
I figured this would be their function. That said I am not disappointed nor surprised. I still enjoy new releases of any amiibo, and have grown to see them as a collector item that happens to give me some in-game perks versus an "toy to Life" that gives me an uber cool collector item that is a 'game changer.' I have been a fanboy since the 80's and will continue to enjoy this line of collectables; albeit I get the ones I personally want and/or mean something to me.
Laaaame. They could have at least thrown in some exclusive costumes or weapons to sweeten the deal.
It's better than nothing, I suppose.
Yeesh, even Fire Emblem Three Houses had better Amiibo support than this. Depending on which FE character Amiibo you scanned, you'd get a unique song from their game along with little trinkets. Even if you don't get the character, it's nice to have classic FE music incorporated into a modern game.
Works for me. Need lots of materials and sacrificial weapons so every little bit helps.
@fafonio You aren't the only one who feels that way! I really wish they unlocked more than they do. Due to that, I only have a small collection of just my favorite ones.
"No functionality.... lame"
....but if they did add stuff people will complain as well that things are locked behind physical items.... so like what?
I collect because they look neat.
scan these amiibo for 1 rupee
@link3710 I hope so!
My Wolf Link Amibo is ready to gift me Link's dlc-promo Nintendo Switch T-shirt (I hope).
Why didnt they do any amiibo specific? What a waste, at least in the original Hyrule Warriors on the Wii U you unlocked the spinner when you scanned Link
If they added more desirable content, there would have been an uproar about how impossible the amiibo are to get hold of without being fleeced. This is is about as good as it gets for amiibo functionality. If they'd wanted to make it the "one-size-fits-all DLC unlock" it could have been, that opportunity came and went a long time ago.
Well, that's mildly disappointing, but whatever. Personally I never really got the amiibo for their functionality but for collection purposes, the functionality was just a nice bonus.
Not much "detailed".
Lots of people complaining about the lack of use but imo this is the best way to use them. Giving you a few extra items which you can also get via normally playing. The worst kind of use for Amiibos are the ones that work as DLC or lock features behind them like the Shadow Link in Link's Awakening or hard mode in Samus Returns. I don't know why people keep asking for stuff like this.
@Heavyarms55 It feels like amiibo are only still around in this post-3DS era because of Smash. The only amiibo released for games not on Wii U or 3DS are:
Splatoon 2 (8 amiibo)
Smash Ultimate (every fighter that isn't in Smash 3DS/Wii U)
Link's Awakening remake (Link)
Then for upcoming you have the Cat Mario and Cat Peach amiibo alongside an enhanced port of a Wii U game that didn't originally have amiibo support (3D World + Bowser's Fury).
Meanwhile Link's Awakening remake and 3D World + Bowser's Fury may have been cut 3DS games (releasing at the same time as Switch version like Captain Toad) given Nintendo originally had plans to support 3DS longer than March 2019.
Well I already have the amiibos, so of course I'll be using them. I wish they would announce some new ones. Still bummed there weren't any for xenoblade.
I'm all for Amiibo unlocking cool unique stuff, but keeping this same stuff unlockable through playing the game normally, even if it's late game/post ending content or through some crazy prerequisites and/or grind
@TheFrenchiestFry Um, no, not really, considering this is how it worked for FE Warriors and the original Hyrule Warriors. In fact the five daily amiibo scans for RNG rewards have been in a few other games too like in Pokken.
I wish they were actually adding in more references to BOTW with this though, as I'd love to scan in Wolf Link or Epona with amiibo and get them as AI companions for missions.
You'd think they would at least give you the outfits you could get in Breath of the Wild
If you used Zelda series Amiibo in Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition you could unlock weapons and items. This sounds like it works the same way. Even in that game you could only scan 5 Amiibo per day.
Like with most Amiibo functionality in games nowadays if you scan the series Amiibo for that game you get better items (i.e. Kirby Star Allies) but if you can non-series Amiibo you get lesser quality items. Skyrim was the same.
@Cheez Cat Mario and Cat Peach

@MajinSoul I agree with you for their limited availability especially in the UK. But if they were more substantial in games and available in stores they could be even better.
Gotta love my TagMo app.
@link3710 In today's 'Warriors' climate they would be severely overpriced DLC. The bois at KT love selling their costumes at a high premium.
@Bunkerneath "Hyrule Warriors on the Wii U you unlocked the spinner when you scanned Link"
Thank you. Nobody else mentioned it, I was beginning to think I imagined it. I may have bought that amiibo for that spinner.
Also - what I still contend is the biggest thing Nintendo has ever locked behind amiibo - Wolf Link amiibo, which I did buy on purpose just to unlock sidekick pet wolf in BotW. Not HW, but I used that wolf as a warning signal for nearby enemies all the time.
@Liam_Doolan "Functionality Detailed" Is that supposed to be a troll title, you didn't "detail" anything? 🤣
@XenoShaun Hyrule Warriors had all the costumes of past Links for free, them being the same in the sequel seems logical.
@link3710 I may be misremembering (God knows 2014 feels like decades ago), but I believe most of the costumes were only free depending where you pre-ordered. You then could purchase them (in fairness very cheaply) after the second or third DLC drop. KT were only ruining Dead or Alive back then though. Now it's infested everywhere! (Seriously 75-100 quid Season Passes for mostly a handful of costumes).
... no wolf link use!??! come on!!!
Good. I'm glad it makes the game fair by having to actually play it to unlock everything. Amiibo not needed. Glad I saved my money....again. Lol
@XenoShaun Looked it up. They were indeed preorder bonuses or bonuses for registering your game on Nintendo.com for some of them, while LoZ!Link (and Medli apparently) released for free in patches, and BotW!Link was only available with the Switch version.
@Thundertron55 People throw a huge fit when you get stuff that's actually interesting from amiibo because then they feel cheated. Honestly, it's probably better for them to give you something small so people still kind of want it but not enough to make people rage about feeling "obligated" to buy the amiibo.
@Heavyarms55 The issue is that as soon as something fun or interesting happens with amiibo, there are the legions of people who relentless attack Nintendo for locking content behind a "paywall". It seems they've come to the (probably logical) conclusion that the amiibo will still sell fairly well (maybe even just as well) with only minor utilization and tiny bonuses that you can already get in-game.
And while amiibo users are somewhat disappointed, it's better than the bad press and rage when they actually use them for something bigger.
@Ttimer5 You hit the nail on the head. It's kind of lose lose, but I think this side of the negative response is smaller.
Nintendo really pulled a Sony here by sending out a new peripheral, supporting it briefly, and then otherwise pretending it never existed.
@Deltath All they have to do, is make Amiibo things also obtainable through other methods without Amiibo. That's a simple solution.
@Heavyarms55 Well, that is what they've done, essentially. Just.. with things that are pretty underwhelming and if the demo is any indication, you can get a dozen or more items like that with every side mission.
@Deltath But they don't have to limit themselves so much. Imagine being a kid and pulling a rare Pokemon card, but then you can scan it and get a chance to catch that Pokemon in game! Sure, you can get, say, Dragapult, in game just fine, but imagine the compound joy there would be in getting the card and then fighting it in game!
Or in Animal Crossing. They could bring back the items and villagers based on other IP from New Leaf and add more. They could just be rare items and villagers normally in game, or, if you have the Amiibo, you can order the items or invite the villagers to your campsite.
In this game, you could get the other tunics, like people were saying, via in game rewards, or if you have the Amiibo maybe get them early.
Just to name a few possibilities.
I see Amiibo as a delicate balancing act. As someone who is willing to buy them, it's frustrating how limited their functionality is, especially on Switch. For those of you who skipped the Wii U, I think they did a better job with it on that console. For example, the original Splatoon had some of the best Amiibo functionality, but Splatoon 2 probably has the most useless Amiibo for any game I own. That said, a lot of people (probably the majority) don't want to have to spend extra money on them. If they feel like they're being strong armed into buying Amiibo just to properly enjoy the games, there could be a consumer backlash.
Maybe I’ll get the game for Christmas. I have all the Zelda amiibo on standby if I do. Can’t get into the old HW anymore. Loved it on Wii U, got a little bored with it on 3DS, and then it just wasn’t the same on Switch. I enjoyed the new demo but I’m a little scared the same thing will happen with this one. I’ll burn out and never look back.
