It's safe to say the Sonic the Hedgehog live-action movie was a huge success for Paramount Pictures when it arrived earlier this year in February. In just 10 days, it banked close to $210 million.
Paramount didn't waste any time - greenlighting a sequel and locking in an official release date of 2022.
Now, we've got the first production details about this upcoming movie, thanks to some new documents filed with the British Columbia Film Commission a few days ago.
The Sonic sequel is codenamed "Emerald Hill", the in-house production company developing it is Red Energy Films and production is scheduled to take place between 15th March and 10th May next year.
It seems the film has a budget over $20 million and the production manager mentioned is Abraham Fraser.
As any Sonic fan will already know, Emerald Hill is the first zone of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Are you looking forward to Sonic's second movie outing? Leave a comment down below.

New videogame based movie but no videogame since 2017, now that's priorities!
Here we go again
Well... Maybe yes.
Not really a Sonic fan but we will see if there is some improvements.
Well, we know the best character in the series (Tails) will be in it, so it’s gonna be great!
Remember guys, this movie is for kids. As a father of young children, I can confirm the first film filled them joy to see one of their favourite characters on the big screen. And that’s what it’s all about. The bonus was us parents enjoyed it too.
@redpanda0310
Oh, i forgot my candies and popcorn. 🍬🍿
Just here to read the comments.
@Kienda It's for all ages and I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to! I hope Knuckles and Amy are in the sequel too.
@Jakiboy Sega has confirmed multiple new games are coming next year, for his 30th anniversary... I'm hoping for a new All-Star Racing and a Sonic Adventure 3 or remake of the original. Sega Ages versions of Sonic 3 and Sonic CD would be nice too.
@Anti-Matter ;D
This one should be an adaptation of the plot of 06, but give him the sword from Black Knight. I feel like the best way to do video game movie sequels is to just embrace the full on ridiculousness.
Emerald Hill was the name of the first level of Sonic 2 of course. If we get to a Sonic 3 I expect the codename to be Angel Island.
"It seems the film has a budget over $20 million"
I am 100% confident that isn't the budget for the entire film. The first one had a $100 million budget. It's probably the cost of filming in that location or something.
@Jakiboy There were two Sonic games released in 2019?
Hate to be a skeptic since I had so much fun watching the first one — way more than expected. But the addition of Tails is probably going to turn this into a more kiddy (or more annoying) experience. Probably both, honestly. It's going to be really tough balancing him in the story, I think. Jim Carrey was so good as Robotnik that I have hopes, though. If they can weave in Knuckles somehow, it might offset Tails's lameness?
Maybe I'm being too harsh here, I dunno.
I liked the first film quite a lot so I'll be keeping my eye out on this, this could either be better than the original or worse
Nice.
The first movie was surprisingly a lot of fun and better than I expected it to be.
Heck yes. I must have watched the first one a dozen times! I hope most of the characters in the first movie return in the second!
Spoiler alert: Sonic gets his teeth kicked in, and has to replace them with human ones. Full circle.
This is good news. I think they got Sonic's personality just right.
@Jakiboy We know a Sonic game's been in development since then, they're clearly just actually... y'know... giving it a full development cycle for once so it won't be a bug-ridden mess.
@Jakiboy to be honest it was a lot better than 90% of the games even when i went to see it in german lol
@link3710
Doubt
@Anguspuss
What did you see this movie that's still in development already? Are you a time traveler? 🤔
The story and pacing in the first one is trash, I expect the same for a sequel. Nothing against Ben Schwartz either but the original Sonic voice actor would have been much better, especially for us long time fans
I loved watching the movie when I saw it cinemas so I can't wait too see the sequel!
Kids loved the first one so bring it on
@Clyde_Radcliffe unfortunately due to legal problems with the soundtrack in the first half it will likely be a while before they release Sonic 3&K again.
Detective Pikachu 2 is needed
@Jakiboy "but no videogame since 2017" Isn't that supposed to be good? The more time a game takes, the better it ends up being?
Unfortunately this didn't work for Forces, because whoever managed the development as a whole thought it was a good idea to spend 3 years on developing the engine and only 1 year on the actual game. Hopefully they use the current engine and spend more time on the actual game this time, but you never know with Sonic :/
@Jakiboy Good, they are taking their time to make sure Sonic games come slower and have quality over quantity.
It could be better with more sonic characters.
@AndyC_MK84 I feel like Colors and Generations both proved 3D Sonic could work pretty well.
Though, I'm also the sole Sonic and the Secret Rings fan so...
@Jakiboy Hey, it's gotta be less of a buggy mess than Forces... right?
Not a Sonic fan myself, but the first one was good fun. I'm definitely down for a sequel, esp. if the casting stays the same and the VFX continues to be as good as it was.
I enjoyed the movie and thought they did a great job with it. Definitely a kid's movie, but I am a kid at heart 😂
The first wasn't a bad movie, if rather dumb in places. It was a mildly entertaining movie that passed a couple of hours. Would love to see a video game adaptation though. I'm thinking maybe a 2D platformer in the style of Mario et al, but obviously much, much faster. It should be set in Sonic's home world like the beginning of the movie (cos that was the best part... so no James Marsden) and he could face off with Jim Carey's character at the end of every level. To give him a bit of an advantage, Jim Carey could maybe have some sort of weaponized vehicle that he rides about in, but in a typically platformy fashion, all Sonic would need to do to defeat Jim Carey is jump at his weak spot a few times. Once defeated, Sonic would then move to the next area that could be a different theme from the previous. I know my idea doesn't follow the plot of the movie, but I think it's an idea Sega could get behind and it could really give our moustached plumber a real (pun intended) run for his money.
@SeveredLegs They changed Sonic's character quite a bit, so they might do the same for Tails so he fits into the world a bit better. Hopefully they don't give him an annoying voice, because I think that's what the usual problem with tails is.
@Munchlax I know your kinda joking, but that actually sounds really, really awesome.
If that hints at Sonic going back to the environment where he actually looked in place (for the grand first few minutes of the first movie), the sequel might solve the only audience-imposed issue its predecessor got burdened with.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to more of Carrey's Robotnik.
@Jakiboy poor Sonic fans, they've had to find something else to rant about.
@Jakiboy the first movie lol. or i am and the new 4k switch awsome is just ffffffffffffffffffff amazing. only issue is the backpack required for the battery
The only good bit about this film was Jim Carrey; everything else was crap. Hard pass on this one.
@Kienda my kid and I loved Jim Carrey as Robotnik but we both agreed the movie was rubbish.
First movie felt like a completely unnecessary warm-up for a second movie that just MIGHT be interesting.
Let's hope for more Olive Garden plugs.
This makes me smile.
@AndyC_MK84 If you do, dig it up and play it. It's the best 3D Sonic imo.
a bugdet of only $20 milions? something seens too fishy here, i trought with the sucess of the first Sonic movie, Paramount Pictures would give the movie a much higher bugdet, $20milions units is too low for a movie like that.
I hope the next one is mostly in Sonic worlds. The first movie was OK (overly safe and formulaic plot, but funny enough to be worth watching), but I was disappointed that it was almost entirely on Earth.
@Giancarlothomaz Having to lower budgets may be the only way to be profitable. How many theaters are going to be in business when it opens? If they dump it on streaming, as far as I know, Paramount would be at the mercy of someone else's streaming service and they'll want their cut. And movie studio that doesn't have their own established streaming service may have trouble finding a profitable way of getting their movies out.
I never saw the first one. I may yet see it, but really the big turn off for me from the trailers was that it was set on modern day Earth and Sonic seemingly pulled here. I would have been pumped if it was set in the locales of the Sonic games and even been fully animated instead of live actors.
I just never get into it when these types of characters are dragged into modern day Earth. I'm really dating myself here, but like the Master of the Universe movie was a huge disappointment being set on Earth as it was. That movie alone probably instilled the strong dislike of that trope in me.
Wait, why would you need a codename for an openly announced sequel?
@SigourneyBeaver They got pretty close. He could be a little more real and have a bit more sass. Although, his child-like personality in the first movie makes sense given age and, more importantly, his isolation.
@Pod Have to disagree, first movie was downright fun in general.
Also. Calling it that Longclaw isn't dead and somehow survived the encounter with the Echidnas.
Remember, if you didn't see the body, they may not be dead!
@0blivion my kids are 5 and 8 when we went to the cinema so I don’t think they can dislike anything other than vegetables and school work.
I didn’t think it was the best movie, that’s for sure, but I waited for them to tell me there reaction and then played to their feelings of it. They were telling me how great it was as we walked out of the cinema and took a picture with a Sonic mascot. So I naturally took the position of “that movie was soo awesome” to boost their view of it.
If they said it sucked (which they wouldn’t at that age) I’d probably have given a more critical view.
I still liked the movie though. Maybe more so because they did.
Good to hear! I’m excited. The first one was a fun Valentine’s Day date for my girlfriend and I. She loves hedgehogs and of course, Sonic is my fav video game character of all time so, it was perfect. 🦔
Let's hope this happens to be in theaters. 2022 is way far off, so I hope Covid can die off completely before then and not delay production, or shutter this to video-on-demand, which I wish this wasn't a thing honestly. Theaters should stay regardless
@Clyde_Radcliffe I want updated Taxman remasters of all the Classic Sonic games that adds all of the features of Sonic Mania (they're all optional, though).
With all five games (1, 2, CD, 3 & Knuckles) having five characters each (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Mighty and Ray) with the ability to mix-and-match character duos (like Knuckles & Knuckles), original remastered (like the iOS ports of 1 and 2) and re-arranged music in the style of Mania (as well as a remastered SC-88pro PC MIDI soundtrack for 3&K, and hopefully with the original release soundtracks for CD and 3 restored, with the prototype Genesis music for 3 as another option), HD FMVs for Sonic CD restored from the original negatives (not sure if it's 16mm or 35mm, though), and both original and updated graphics inspired by Mania. Ultra-widescreen CinemaScope support for the mobile and PC versions (the mobile version of Sonic 1, 2 and CD are Ultra-widescreen with newer phones like the iPhone 12 Pro Max).
Hell, they can even include Sonic Mania as part of the package.
I really wish to play as Knuckles in Sonic CD.
@Noid Blame locations charging ridiculously high service charges for the production of The Empire Strikes Back.
Producer Howard Kazanjian came up with the idea of shooting Return of the Jedi under the codename Blue Harvest which was apparently a horror film. Even though Return of the Jedi, then titled Revenge of the Jedi, was already known to be in production.
Yes hopefully they migrate Sonic back to Mobius, it was a mistake to leave him on Earth though Green Hill, Montana isn't too bad.
@Tipehtfomottob If this came to consoles I’d buy it so fast.
Just thinking... about how many times would Sonic need to hit Dr. Robotnik to beat him and move to the next level, 8?
@MrYuzhai I don't think there will ever be a sequel since Detective Pikachu got turned into a human at the end of the movie
TBH the games are probably my least favourite part of the franchise... don't get me wrong, they're still great games (in most cases), they just never really held my attention for long enough to properly enjoy them.
@ChromaticDracula 8 hits would be just about right I reckon. They could even be a baddie Sonic thrown in to the mix too that was either made of metal or has human teeth.
Here comes tails..
@Clyde_Radcliffe i can see knuckles being in it since the first movie started with an escape from the echidnas, but it might be too soon for amy the stalker
