Mjeh. Just seems like a waste of a nice HD update to me. AKiMW was fine for ‘86 but pales in comparison to great MS platformers like Asterix, any of the Mickey games , Sonic etc. would really love to see an update of any of those instead.
I will say this update fixes at least 2 of the originals weakest areas. The godawful sound and the dated (but functional at least) graphics. Too bad the boss battles haven’t been improved much, that’s another area that could have used some attention. I may pick this up on sale for nostalgia reasons but as I don’t see myself spending more than 2-3 hours with this, it will need to be a pretty steep discount!
Yup agree with this, AW looks great here. Hope all the extra content in the original is here like the maps you unlock during regular play. Day 1 purchase for me for sure.
I thought it was very good with just a couple of missteps that dampened the overall enthusiasm a bit. Ending the presentation with “BoTW 2 coming end 2022 we errr hope” didn't sound too convincing - but finally seeing something solid on btow2 again at all was nice.
Prior to the previous direct my 3 somewhat realistic wishes were THPS 1/2 port, new 2D Mario and Advance Wars 1 remake so getting 2/3 there this year is fantastic for me. Slight downer though is that the AW “hd” graphics look very by the numbers and have lost some personality along the way. Still happy it’s coming but a bit underwhelmed there.
Metroid 5 is amazing , just a super announcement. The Mario Party and Warriors stuff look good as well. To really knock it out off the park it would have been good to see 1 big hitter though lined up for this year. As is a lot of good supporting acts, but missing that one tent pole release.
They really did a great job with this. Love that it can be quite a challenge on some games to even get on the board (much like in the actual arcade). Only thing I would change is to keep score attack permanent for some of the games where it’s time attack unless it’s a weekly challenge now.
Nah now that I have 3D World on Switch I don’t have a reason to ever turn the WiiU on again. It’s not just the games, it’s just such a clunky device compared to the Switch. A part from collectors I don’t see any reason to go back and buy one of these now.
I know what you meant. I’m saying the response you see here is no different from the response this series received back in the day when it was PC only. So it’s not anything specific to Nintendo as you seem to be implying.
Nah Larry’s been getting this type of response since the 80s in gamer mags. It’s really not anything new or Nintendo specific. He’s still here in 2021 so he must be doing something right
It’s not a concept that interests me as I have limited time to game and just want to play what I’m interested in. Seems like a great concept for people to be able to play a large variety of games for a low cost but just not for me.
In between the previous Wonderboy games already released and things like Shantae, it’s a pretty crowded genre. Not seeing anything here yet to make me think this is for me but it does look better than the previous trailer.
Yeah I’ll be reactivating my online sub to try this out, looks like a lot of fun. Pac-Man CE on the 360 was one of my favorite games on that system so hope this is on par with that.
I’ll be passing on this one. Didn’t like it back when I owned a master system and still don’t care for it now. Alex in Shinobi World would have been a strong maybe for me but not this. Updated SMS versions of Asterix or Castle of illusion would be day 1 buys for me.
Holy moly o.O just great to see a 3rd party release being able to put out those kinds of numbers. Really impressive. I’m going to work through my own backlog a bit more first but I look forward to getting MHR a little bit further down the line myself.
I love Child of Light, have played through it 2 times on WiiU and a 3rd time on Switch. Just really like the battle system , it looks great and tells an interesting story as well. Such a steal at 5 bucks.
Always awkward when the super hard core show up and try to tell the other 99% things are actually really great. Look I’m a fan of things that nobody else should spend their money on either - it’s ok, you can still enjoy the game.
Very tempted to pick up Monster Hunter but I have a lot of other stuff to play right now so will hold out. Kaze also looks good , not this week but probably a future purchase.
Would have preferred a spiritual successor to the Master System Asterix platformer myself, but this does look pretty good. Hopefully the gameplay matches the standard set by the likes of SoR4
I decided to give Civilization 6 another go last week - a game you know is good but that can be a bit overwhelming if you’re new to the series like me. Over the 2 years I’ve had the game I never really got far with it. This time around it all kinda clicked into place and it’s all I’ve been playing for a week now and suspect it will keep me occupied for some time.
I imagine this is the worst part of being a reviewer. You give something an 8 and you’re a corporate shill; you hand out a 6 and you’re stomping on someone’s childhood memories
I don’t get the fuss. If you liked this game back in the day and want to play it again, buy it. I may pick this up in a sale as it is giving off some strong WoW vibes, but I haven’t even started Witcher 3 yet and have Divinity II on my wishlist ahead of this.
I’m one of those weirdos as well. Loved the idea of the original platformer, switching between your 4 turtles. Execution could have been a bit better with too many non-turtles enemies etc. would love to see another attempt at a Turtles game in that style.
I really wasn’t a huge fan of beat em ups during the 8/16 bit days - probably because I owned a C64 and SMS and they didn’t have the greatest games in this genre there. Despite that I have been really loving many of the more recent ones. SoR4 was my favorite 2020 game so really pumped for this one.
On the couch coop front, 51 clubhouse games has made a return here (Yacht Dice!) and we should have some time to make some progress on SM3DW.
Ghosts and Goblins is what I’ll be playing solo mostly this weekend along with some Capcom Arcade Stadium to try and set some higher scores. I’m loving G&G so far - for those interested in the game but still scarred from the originals difficulty, the squire difficulty setting provides a challenge that’s really very do-able.
I am mentally preparing myself for the pain G&G will inflict on me tonight. It does make you wonder you know, how serious are Arthur and the princess really? Is this a relationship worth saving or should Arthur start looking elsewhere for a girlfriend (elsewhere being not this hellscape )
I bough both. The Blizzard collection is a different approach, providing the definitive editions of those games. Worth it if you’re a big fan of these games, but doesn’t have the general appeal of the Capcom collections.
I’ve been having a great time with this - the score challenges are pretty challenging, but I’m having fun just getting on the leaderboards on my favorite games. The whole package captures the feel of a virtual arcade pretty well.
Fun thing to do here: check out the top ranked players most played games to see things like 500 hours playing the Konami Arcade Classics collection and stuff like that
Sold! Keep these new entries for classic series coming. Been practicing the original on Capcom Arcade and errr yeah I’ll start this on the lowest difficulty setting , I’m awful (yet to hit the 35k needed to get on the leaderboard )
I don’t have the global sales data at the ready or anything, but going off what’s published here for JP and UK, I didn’t get the impression Mario 3D Allstars or the Xenoblade remaster are big sellers. Of course they don’t have to be to still be profitable, but I’m not seeing this big demand for full price Wii ports.
This Zelda port is great for the more hardcore fans out there that will gobble up anything Zelda. I think it’s a poor decision though to dredge up this type of stuff at full price when your competitors will be showing the latest and greatest at similar prices. It would have helped if there were other 1st party releases planned for the next 6 months that are big hitters that do excite a larger audience, but I’m not seeing it.
My concern now is that Galaxy 2 along with the other Zelda HD remasters will now actually be in line for standard full price release as well. Not as filler for Jan or Feb but possibly even during Q3/4 as “big” holiday releases (they did Pikmin last year). I truly hope theres actually something big planned for late 2021 but I’m starting to lose confidence here.
The local coop main event is SM3DW , 100% so far going into W5. I’m still working my way through Bowsers Fury solo.
Just slowly making my way through Cyber Shadow (stage 6) and Horace (C11) - I like these games, I want to complete them, but man is there still a long and difficult road ahead lol.
Finally there’s Need For Speed which I’m really enjoying playing through again after all these years and I’ll be picking up the Blizzard collection primarily for R&RR.
Oh wow, yeah they really went above and beyond with these. Makes the asking price much more fair. Think I’ll pick this up this weekend then, really love me some R&R Racing
I lu-uh-uh-LOVE!!! R&R racing! Never got it into the other 2 though so the $20 asking price feels a bit steep. But I’ll get this eventually just for Rock & Roll
My wife and I absolutely love Crafted World , have about 60 hours in that one.
For me, it’s not so much about hearing about a particular game and keeping the hype going - it’s more that this latest direct set out what Nintendo has planned for the next 6 months and it isn’t very exciting . I expected more, as their competitors have just released new consoles and 2020 was by and large a bit more quiet as well in terms of new releases.
As part of a 3D allstars type multipack this would have been just fine - as a stand-alone $60 release I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. I’ve had no issue with the WiiU ports (they really do deserve to be enjoyed by a larger audience) but this is just one step too far for me.
“We have nothing to share with you regarding BotW2 - but don’t be disappointed, we DO have a $60 Wii Port for you instead!”
I’m still shaking my head about how incredibly underwhelming this direct was. Look, I have a backlog and enough items on my wishlist to keep me going for a while, but I can understand if quite a few people decide to jump ship after that showing.
I’m really not a graphics snob but this game looks so poor it’s quite mind blowing they dredged this up for one of the final reveals of the direct. Stuff it somewhere in the beginning of the presentation if you must, not end on it!
I really hoped Nintendo would go all out on this one and take the competition head on, but that was a flop. Mario Golf was nice. NMH3 expected, but good. But nothing to genuinely get excited about here.
Double-Dipping.
