UK physical chart data is now in for the week ending 27th March, revealing that Monster Hunter Rise has claimed top spot in its debut week.
According to GamesIndustry.biz, Monster Hunter Rise's physical launch sales were "more than twice the size" of those achieved by Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate on 3DS, but 43% lower than Monster Hunter: World – although the latter did launch across both PS4 and Xbox One, we shouldn't forget.
This week's other big chart story, however, is that Super Mario 3D All-Stars has had a huge boost in sales, no doubt thanks to its upcoming removal from store shelves. The game saw a rise in physical sales of 276% week-on-week, with Nintendo intending to halt sales of the game from Wednesday, 31st March.
It was a pretty solid week for Nintendo all round, with Switch exclusives making up the majority of the top ten. Here's a look at this week's top ten all formats chart:
Last Week | This Week | Title |
---|---|---|
- | 1 | Monster Hunter Rise |
9 | 2 | Super Mario 3D All-Stars |
1 | 3 | Animal Crossing: New Horizons |
2 | 4 | Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury |
10 | 5 | Minecraft Dungeons |
8 | 6 | Minecraft (Switch) |
- | 7 | Mario Kart 8 Deluxe |
13 | 8 | FIFA 21 |
16 | 9 | Luigi's Mansion 3 |
19 | 10 | Super Mario Odyssey |

I saw 3D all stars and said "GOD Not again" but then saw it was a sale chart. (That was mostly about 3d all stars lets be honest)
Look at me I have 3d all stars PTSD Now.
With Nintendo doing an updated trailer for NSO a few days ago, it feels like 3D All Stars' future is something to do with an overhauled, more expensive NSO.
I already have 3D All Stars this March 2021, but i quickly lost interest to play after i found FLUDD control mechanism from Mario Sunshine was a mess.
Glad i bought the Switch version, cannot imagine if i bought Gamecube version which is rarely to be founded and found the game was not satisfying.
My hype with 3D Mario All Stars has been buried by my current hype of Beatmania IIDX, Pop'n Music and Drummania on PS2 as my BEMANI PS2 games order (Beatmania IIDX 9th style, Pop'n Music 8 and GFDM Masterpiece Silver) with Pop'n Music controller will be arrived this week.
Time for BEMANI games at home ! 😎
This is disgraceful. Nintendo forced all these people to buy All-Stars. People who didn't have the money right now but bought it anyway. And how many more people are there who will never play it because of Nintendo's anti-consumer policy?
It's frustrating to me that Nintendo now has proof that holding their games hostage is a profitable strategy. I refuse to pay this ransom.
I'm not surprised, they've really been pushing the advertising for the past couple of weeks.
I'll be happy to get this whole 3D All Stars situation finished to be honest.
@Minecraft_Master
Yawn.
UK Charts: Japan edition
Fandom: "Your availability policies are bad and you should feel bad!"
Nintendo:
I'm restraining myself from making the obvious comment, but it will be interesting to see how long Mario 3D All Stars stays on the charts after M-Day.
@DocRompler It doesn't prove anything. That could be 4 weeks of sales in a week, but what would have happened in the 5th week?
@BloodNinja
Type this.
(img)website link(/img)
Replace ( and) with [ and ]
@Grumblevolcano If they were planning to overhaul NSO soon, wouldn't they be better off waiting until then before releasing a new trailer for it?
@Anti-Matter FINALLY Gee whiz! LOL Thank you!
The fact that they got a large spike in sales will probably encourage them to continue with this method, despite the consumer push back. Shame on the gamers who gripped about its limited availability and then bought it last minute (I'm sorry, everyone. I'm the guy who did that thing. I also bought that Fire Emblem game, too. I'm the worst)
Why does that look nothing like a UK chart? Such a stark contrast from a few years ago.
@Minecraft_Master I love your posts..
@TryToBeHopeful You don't think a massive sales spike the week before the game is disappeared is proof that this strategy works? What?
@Anti-Matter I used to have a very nice DJ DAO controller, man I miss IIDX! Truly one of the best music games out there. 9th Style was my first one! What level do you play on?
NINJA APPROVED
That was to be expected, no? It's the whole point of this strategy
@Minecraft_Master "This is disgraceful. Nintendo forced all these people to buy All-Stars. People who didn't have the money right now ..."
The limited sale thing is a bit of a move for sure, but aren't you being a tad melodramatic? Forced people without money to buy it? It's not like Shigsy was waiting for them outside the supermarket with a gun, forcing them to pick up 3 old Mario games over the groceries!
@DocRompler DocRompler I couldn't afford it, but Gamestop lets you buy the game and pay if off, so I bought a couple of copies. But that means I couldn't buy Monster Hunter. How long before that is sold out and not available ever again?
@DocRompler Yeah, I hope they don't continue this trend. The saddest part is that everyone basically went, "well, ok" and gave them money, thus rewarding them for the tactic. I love Nintendo Life, but Nintendo as a company is making me less of a fan, these days.
(I know there is no affiliation, just had to throw some love out there for NL.)
I've seen people selling Mario 3d All Stars used on Facebook for around £30 this week and can't help but think why they just don't wait until next week to sell it
Interesting -Tesco UK who normally have very healthy switch sales have not stocked monster hunter rise......
@Minecraft_Master I'm guessing that means you plan on scalping your extra copy.
@TryToBeHopeful
It'll also be interesting to see what the games final sales number will be. How much has its limited-time availability benefited and/or hurt the game?
@Minecraft_Master ...apologies if I'm not getting a sarcastic joke, but you couldn't get MH Rise as you bought two copies of Mario 3D All Stars? Why not just buy...one copy of each?
@Grumblevolcano That trailer was an old re-upload.
@BloodNinja
From my last play at local Arcade, i could play level 3 Normal Beatmania IIDX songs. And it still got C. 😣
Still have to practice a lot as i will buy Keyboardmania 1 + 2 PS2 with keyboard controller and more difficult way to play (24 keys) next month.
One thing, i will use Pop'n Music controller for PS1 / PS2 to play Pop'n Music, Beatmania IIDX and Drummania.
I will config the 2 buttons on the left as Disc buttons for IIDX and i will config the 5 keys at the bottom for 5 buttons for Drummania (Hi Hat, Snare, Green Tom, Red Tom, Cymbal). The Bass pedal i will put on the top but i will use Auto Bass when i play Drummania with Pop'n Music controller.
It was fun after i tried to pretend playing Drummania with Pop'n Music button config by tapping my fingers on the table and watching the Drummania autoplay videos from Youtube, immitating i touch the 5 buttons at the bottom as Hi hat, Snare, Green Tom, Red Tom and Cymbal. Even DAY DREAM at level 99 was felt quite easy when i ignored the Bass pedal. 😆
Oh, these are my BEMANI games skill level.
DDR = Challenge level 18
Para Para Paradise = Expert 7 stars
Drummania = level 60 - 70 songs by majority
Beatmania IIDX = Beginner, level 1 - 3
Pop'n Music = 5 keys any level.
@carlos82
I've seen similair things here in the Netherlands. It used to be a very hard game to get initially, but this quickly changed. You can now find them rather easily, both in stores as well as on the 2nd hand market. I've even got a little anecdote about it ready for you.
When Black Friday rolled around last year, I saw it pop-up in quite a few deals. One of them offered an assortement Switch games that, if you bought 2 of them, you could buy a third for free. Super Mario 3D All-Stars was the only 2020 Switch game included in this deal, all the others were mid-2019 releases at their youngest.
If that isn't telling, I don't know what is.
@Grackler
He is on the wind up, or at least I really hope he is.....
@Anti-Matter Very nice! Before my local arcade went out of business, they had all the music games, pop'n, DDR Extreme, IIDX 10th style, and Drum Mania, but I don't remember the version. I played all of those games extensively for about 12 years. Even competed in DDR a few times! Very, very fun times.
NINJA APPROVED
Even though alot of 3D All Stars sales this week will be because of supposed scalping, it's still for the best that they get purchased now so they can end up in SOMEONE'S hands in the future, as opposed to no one's hands...
@TheFullAndy Yep, smacks of a sock account joker...but then again, this is the world of gamers we're talking about here...
@WiltonRoots
Yeah you can never be too sure if it is pretend crazy or call the emergency services crazy!
@TheFullAndy It did seem a bit ridonkulous! Hard to tell on the internet these days though...
@Minecraft_Master It is a limited release. It has been a LIMITED release from the day they announced it.
And to be honest, I've seen many limited releases in my life that were less readably available than Super Mario 3D All Stars.
@BloodNinja
With a little luck, the law of diminishing returns will come to pass with any future limited time release games such as this.
Lots of people, me & my friends included, bought the game early simply because we didn't want to miss out on it if we were to decided to buy it later.
However: Super Mario 3D All-Stars became readily availabe a few weeks after release and can be found rather easily at both stores and the 2nd hand market. This tells people that their fears were unfounded and that you can still wait and get the game later. This, alongside yet another wave of outcry over the strategy, can and hopefully will cause the sales of said game to be lower then we currently see thus making the strategy less profitable for Nintendo.
This by no means a certainty, but does lie in the realm of possibility.
Skipped.
Just want Galaxy 2 for a reasonable price.
There's been games with far less availability than this one. And this one we knew it was limited. It's an anniversary release. Anniversaries end.
I still havent picked it up, not much interest right now, but I'm not worried about it. Not only are there all kinds of copies out there, I also fully expect these to be re-released under different non-anniversary branding later.
@F_T_Wolf I’m mainly thinking about the digital release, that should just be available all the time. I understand limited physical releases, but a digital storefront doesn’t have the issues related to physical media. For a guy like me who is a cheapskate and only buys games on the deepest sales, it’s annoying.
people still being salty over 3d all stars give it a rest yes being limited to a certain amount of time is questionable but im pretty sure their going to release those game seperate down the road and now lets just focus on playing MHR.
@Lord you sure? My local Tesco has it in stock well sold out now but still.
@Dogorilla Not quite as people subscribing to NSO in the last week of March would be more beneficial to Nintendo's stats than subscribing in April. Same with most products hence why April is usually a drought month for games.
@Clyde_Radcliffe It was an updated trailer like the online games included newer titles such as Animal Crossing, the retro games section included SNES and special offers were changed from "more to announce in the future" to stuff like Tetris 99 and Super Mario Bros. 35.
@F_T_Wolf I remember there being a big rush to buy this and that Game and Watch, probably with a view to resell for many until it became obvious there were plenty of copies. Speaking of that Game and Watch, I bought it recently from Amazon listed as new but received this
What happen to the unsold copies of Allstars? If such a thing will exist by the first.
Why didn’t anyone tell me that all stars was being removed this week?
@outsider83 they'll just continue to sell them until they run out
@DocRompler Right there with ya. Big N fan but this is very disappointing and I ain't supporting it. I won't be buying the game.
I hope this strategy of selling limited edition games won't become a common thing
@carlos82
Yikes! Any kind of refunds or insurance policies that you can fall back on?
And yeah, the amount of copies is indeed a factor as well. Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a game with mass market appeal. It ain't niche. Would Nintendo really shoot itself in the foot by manufactring to few copies? No they wouldn't. They didn't and that's what you see now and what 'hurts' this limited release strategy of theirs.
@BloodNinja
Any physical product is technically speaking a limited release. It'll stop being manufactured and sold in stores eventually, at which point you need to rely soley on 2nd hand market to get it. It's more the very short window, that it is not a niche product and indeed the digital sales restriction that bother me.
@F_T_Wolf getting a refund was easy enough but they really couldn't care less when it comes to customer service and they wouldn't post my review because I criticised them
@Minecraft_Master They didn't force anyone to buy it. They just artificially increased its rarity.
@F_T_Wolf Yeah, unless they have a plan to sell the games separately or something, limited digital is just silly.
@Minecraft_Master Lots of whooshes today : )
I imagine there will be plenty of used copies available.... are retailers allowed to sell the remainder of their stock? It would be really stupid if they had to return them to Nintendo.
Based on the sales numbers, there will always be copies available at reasonable prices. It’s games you don’t expect to become rare that become rare. E.g.Wii Just Dance 2020, Zumba Wii u and Gadget racers on GameCube.
@Minecraft_Master So Nintendo put a gun to people's head? Nobody was forced to buy anything.
@Minecraft_Master Scalpers have those people covered. Thank goodness Nintendo supports scalpers.
UK retail launch sales:
> Monster Hunter World: ~52,000 (~37,500 on PS4, ~14,500 on XBO)
> Monster Hunter Rise: ~30,000
> Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate: ~15,000
Solid launch for Monster Hunter Rise, though not nearly as good as that of Monster Hunter World, which was to be expected for the UK market.
That really does look like the JP sales chart. Wonder if Rise caused a spike in new Switch owners pushing sales in general.
@Medic_Alert I agree entirely. Those complaining about anti-consumer conveniently ignore the great likelihood that Nintendo will lose sales over this. That said, there's also a point to be made that each production run costs money over and above the raw materials. So if Nintendo can nail lifetime demand in one print run, the cost-savings could offset the cost of losing future sales.
It's just old Mario games, SM64's "facelift" isn't even good.
@carlos82
That you got a refund is good to hear at least!
@Grumblevolcano Oh I see what you mean. Well it's possible, but I'm not convinced they're necessarily going to do anything like that. It would definitely make sense for them to keep selling the 3D All-Stars games in some way, but when do Nintendo's decisions ever make sense?
@Outerdragon that’s interesting is it a big store as mine only has one fixture for switch games and no sign of it.
Ps. What position was it in?
@Lord yah mine is one of the biggest stores but only has two switch mods.
Now that's what you call Nintendomination...
Such beautiful weather today
Noticed an error with the charts table, it says "-" for MK8 Deluxe for last week but it was 4th.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2021/03/uk_charts_animal_crossing_new_horizons_returns_to_number_one_on_its_anniversary
HOLD! HOOOOOOOLD!
@BloodNinja In the case of 3D All Stars they go from scalpers to preservationists. If someone wants to buy a copy this Christmas they will be the only option.
What does the red names mean?
@Kanbolara The red names are links, you can click them to get more information on the game that is in red. : )
@Enigk Exactly!
@BloodNinja It's strange how only some of them have links.
@DocRompler Nope, it's not proof one way or another. If they'd only sold Mario Kart 8 for one year, do you think they would have had 3 years of sales in the final week? A similar spike would have been negligible in comparison. On the other hand this isn't Mario Kart 8.
@F_T_Wolf Yeah, compared with say 3d World.
Lucky for me that I bought my copy as soon as possible ^3^ Three of my most beloved Mario games ^3^~♡ And Mario 3D World will follow soon ^3^
Some folk here really don't know what anti-consumer means lol.
Great debut for MH Rise and great week for Switch games in general. Really happy to see Odyssey and LM3 return to the top 10 too.
@TryToBeHopeful
And other 3D Mario's and games of the same calibre in the same sales window.
@Kanbolara Yeah, I’m guessing that’s because this website doesn’t have info on all the games listed.
I ask this purely in disbelief...
Is...is that really a UK chart?
Outstanding! This year could be the strongest yet!
You know, that huge sales spike could just be the scalpers building their inventory.
I have heard well of it happening when one print run of Ocarina of Time 3D ended. Scalpers went and bought the remaining stock so they could literally double the average ebay sales price in a day.
@Minecraft_Master Shiggy put a gun to Pikachu's head. "Buy Mario All-Stars 3D or I'll kill this rat next!"
@BloodNinja It seems odd that this website wouldn't have information on Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Mario Odyssey and Luigi's Mansion 3.
@GrailUK
UK sales charts are starting to look a lot like the Japanese sales charts lol
Go back 5 years ago and it wasn't uncommon to sell 0 Nintendo titles in the UK Top 20.
@DocRompler Game isn't being held hostage. You can buy it now from the eshop or probably pick it up at your local game or department store for the foreseeable future
@Minecraft_Master Your post are hilarious.
Don't worry about scalpers you be able to get it at a decent price through 2nd hand places like CEX. It won't go up in value in CEX for a very long time also.
@Kanbolara Those aren’t Nintendo games.
I ended up picking the game up day one, limited release or not, I still would have picked it up day one.
I don't regret the decision at all.
@Minecraft_Master people who have limited funds shouldn't be buying video games, they've had 6 months... Nintendo does this every anniversary edition, so much butt hurt over NOTHING
@westman98 I know right!
In other news, Sony have twigged that killing games off sells! So they have announced they are slaughtering their PS3 library. Man, they just have to copy Nintendo with everything, don't they.
@BloodNinja You have a point. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe just isn't "Nintendo enough" to be considered a Nintendo game.
@Kanbolara
@carlos82 ok. I thought Nintendo wanted the unsold copies back. It seemed weird to me.
@Willsy "people with limited funds should not be buying video games"
because poverty is its own entertainment.
People are mad that they're "fOrCeD" to buy a game pack they were going to do out of their own volition anyway while complaining about it being bare bones knowing FULL WELL what the Collection contains.
@Richnj ... great answer buddy... we're living below the poverty line, I got a great idea, let's buy video games... moron
@Willsy is that 'moron' aimed at me?
https://www.kotaku.com.au/2017/07/i-was-homeless-and-video-games-saved-my-life/
Imagine, each day is a huge struggle. You're faced with depression and you just want it to end. Maybe you have kids whose soul and childhood is being destroyed by your financial situation. You're living day by day, and sometimes there's food on the table, and sometimes there isn't, but each meal is just for that day. What's the value of joy, happiness, and hope? What's the value of seeing your children laugh and having fun? Of having to not face your reality the way others also dodge their reality in entertainment, only, your reality is much much darker?.
Then some privileged gamer tells you that you don't need any of that. Escapism is only for the fortunate.
