The crusade to make all of gaming's tentpole titles into battle royales continues and following Tetris and Super Mario Bros., what classic game is more iconic than PAC-MAN?
Perhaps we should have seen this one coming. What makes the "99" series ingenious is it takes the foundation of games that have proven their timelessness over the decades and instead of disrupting their flow by changing what worked, it simply sprinkles on some modern layers of its own. Vanilla PAC-MAN is already one of the most addictive games out there, but when you introduce a fast-paced competitive component that feeling of "just one more game" is heightened exponentially. This 41-year-old classic has simply never been this hard to put down and even with everything it adds, at its core it's still just PAC-MAN — which speaks volumes for how well the original still holds up.
So how exactly did they make PAC-MAN into a 99-player game? Well, much like its predecessors in the 99 series, everyone is playing on their own isolated screen but what you do can impact and hinder the other 98 players. Using the right stick, you can target an opponent or protect yourself against incoming ghosts and every single time you swallow a ghost on your screen it sends a little ghostly Pac-Man to theirs. These aren't as deadly as Goombas or Koopas from Mario 35, but running into them temporarily slows your Pac-Man down — if your screen is full of them, the four iconic ghosts have a major advantage against you. You can amplify the carnage with new pickups that multiply ghosts during the vulnerability phase giving you a similar all-you-can-eat ghost buffet to that found in PAC-MAN Championship Edition.
This all sounds pretty simple so far, right? Well PAC-MAN 99 has a couple more extra layers and it doesn't exactly explain... well, any of them. For instance, in addition to being able to target other players there's actually a secondary wheel that changes how power pellets operate. If you select "stronger" before picking up a pellet you'll notice ghosts only become vulnerable for four seconds, but if you manage to catch any of them in that time you'll deal far more damage to your opponent than usual. It's tricky to balance both the targeting system and power pellet system all while playing a fast-paced game of PAC-MAN and in this respect, PAC-MAN 99 isn't as instantly intuitive as previous entries. That's not to say understanding these mechanics is essential to victory, but those who master them will surely have an upper hand — especially as the average skill level of the player base goes up over time.
It may not be instantly understandable, but when it clicks this game becomes something special. There are so many playstyles and options to take — picking up a chunk of regular pellets will spawn a fruit in the middle of the screen and collecting this causes all other pickups to respawn, but if you ignore it and waka waka your way around the board like a regular game of PAC-MAN, you'll get a permanent speed boost for eating up every pellet. So, do you use your time to boost your stats or do you use that time to chomp on as many ghosts as possible? Maybe you sit in a corner and try to waste as much time as possible while your opponents slowly drop out like flies. We found ourselves adapting and improvising more than we have in any other PAC-MAN game in our lives. It's simply exhilarating.
In terms of pacing, this is by far the most pick-up-and-play '99' title yet. Winning our first game barely took five minutes and we've taken the first place spot in as short as four. Not only does this make PAC-MAN 99 the perfect game to play in short bursts, but it makes it incredibly hard to stop playing. If you start a game and come 50th? "Eh, that one doesn't count, try again." Top 10? "Nearly made it...try again." First Place? "...let's go again". If anything, we feel the need to warn you this game can kill your productivity. Nintendo Life? We're living the PAC-MAN 99 Life now.
Tetris 99 is likewise one of our Switch favourites, but it didn't launch in such a robust state — thankfully PAC-MAN 99 debuts with many of the features Tetris fans had to wait months for... though much of it is paid DLC. It's hard to feel too aggravated when the core mode that matters is free to all Nintendo Switch Online Subscribers, but if you want to play with a Dig Dug or Galaga theme be ready to shell out real world money. It's certainly not as offensive as other free-to-play games, and these skins are legitimately great with far more dynamic elements than those found in Tetris, but not a single one cost a penny in that game.
Offline modes are also behind a paywall, much like in Tetris, and importantly one of these modes preserves the core PAC-MAN 99 gameplay in an offline state against bots. You may wonder why that's so important; well, it assures this gameplay style will never be lost to time, unlike the dearly departed Super Mario Bros. 35. The servers inevitably turn off for every online game but forty years from now we'll still be able to enjoy PAC-MAN 99, even if it's just against bots. There's also simple score and time attack single player variants adding a teeny bit more value, though they aren't the main attraction by any means.
PAC-MAN 99 is certainly more money-hungry than previous iterations, but the core 99 mode plays the same regardless whether you open your wallet or not. Almost everything is just extra dressing... almost. In Tetris 99 you and a friend could share a password with each other to assure you're matched in the same game and thankfully PAC-MAN adopts a similar feature with a completely private lobby with friends — but only if those friends pay up and buy the PAC-MAN 99 bundle. We can get behind other monetised components, but this one's a step too far and limits what has the potential to be a remarkable community feature.
Even with a few bumps surrounding the package, though, it's hard to be upset when the core game is as good as it is and is essentially "free". This is gaming in its purest form, each match starts great and simply gets better the longer it runs. PAC-MAN can't be bogged down with pacing issues and downtime because it's PAC-MAN. Developer Arika has taken one of the most addictive, polished and timeless games and somehow made it better than it's ever been before.
Conclusion
PAC-MAN 99 may seem initially daunting with mechanics it simply doesn't explain but once you experiment and learn by fire, it won't take long to realise its true potential. Arika and Bandai Namco have barely touched the formula of this 41-year-old classic, and yet with just a few new layers it feels like a brand new game. We've invested more time than we care to admit into the previous '99' entries and it's clear PAC-MAN 99 is destined for evergreen greatness.

Awesome we had come a long way from Pac-Man on the Atari 2600.
The fact that password matches are paid dlc seems like a bit of a joke, especially since Tetris 99's password matches were free
“This will be our final review, because all we will do now is play Pac-Man 99.”
-Nintendo Life staff, circa 2021
NINJA APPROVED
I've just realized
Of course it's a Jon review
Pac-man 99 is great I play it when I need a little break form the Hunt.
I finished 12th. Gotta feeling I'm not gonna do better than that.
Why am I wasting time not downloading this
This looks great fun, although I'm not convinced on the cost of the DLC / private matches.
Is this time for the Marcus Brigstocke joke?
I am still upset that Nintendo took down Super Mario 35 just for effing Pac-man... like, I like Pac-man too and I am sure this game is fun, but the idea that it replaced Super Mario Bros. 35 just doesn't sit down well with me at all 😠
Yeah I’ll be reactivating my online sub to try this out, looks like a lot of fun. Pac-Man CE on the 360 was one of my favorite games on that system so hope this is on par with that.
So all the articles saying there 8 strategy options, I mean there's really 16 aren't there?
Also I don't know what any of them mean, and I am so bad at pac-man.
There is something strangely satisfying of chomping non-stop ghosts at once.
@Meehanuk I enjoy Pac-Man 99 way more than I ever enjoyed Super Mario 35. It's great fun, you should try it if you haven't already!
T99 still feels like Tetris. I think this changes the Pac-Man formula quite a bit. I am glad people are enjoying it, but it may be too chaotic for me.
I’ll play it some more and see if I can understand the game better.
It's good fun but I rate it lower than Tetris 99 and Mario 35 as there's NOTHING to unlock by playing online (Tetris 99 had themes to unlock, Mario 35 had levels to unlock and both had daily challenges) which significantly reduces the replay value. I really liked that feeling of working towards something the other games provided! I feel this one will get old quicker.
Didn't Namco just come out with a Pac-Man battle royale on Stadia last year, or am I insane?
Edit: I still have my sanity.
https://stadia.google.com/games/pac-man-mega-tunnel-battle
If this goes multiplatform like the Bomberman game on Stadia, I wonder if it will make this NSO perk redundant or if this is the better game.
Pac man 99 is insanely fun. i love it
I thought this game was really fun. I used to play Pac-Man from time to time as a kid and my kids play it on the phone. Once they saw this, they really wanted to play. It's pretty cool.
There isn't a link between Mario 35 disappearing and Pac-man 99 appearing, except maybe it was good timing to release it when a BR game was taken away. Correlation is not causation.
I'm loving this so far, I'm hoping they'll do a Atari 2600 theme at some point. I haven't fully grasped the attack system yet but still won a couple of games. The only thing this needs for longevity is some variations of the mazes but otherwise this is great fun
I’ve had a few games, got into the top ten, then just died without knowing why. I’m pretty good at Pac-Man but not sure I get all the rules here!
@Jackpaza0508 Yeah, there is 30$ of DLC.
@Not_Soos I think the stadia one seems better.
@Sszx09 If this is the only reason you would get NSO then don't get it.
@Terra It's a waste of storage.
@stvnorman you only get killed by ghosts or the red pacman
@Tamale Jesus I didn't expect it to cost that much!
Tetris 99 has remained a consistently popular game since its launch. I wonder if Pac-Man 99 has the same kind of staying power.
Only time will tell.
I'm definitely glad they give these classic games new purpose. It's been admittedly hard to go back to classic Pac-man and Tetris, because I dont care about chasing hi-scores like I used to.
So having games like this (and Championship Edition) are good ways to enjoy a form of the classics while also respecting your time.
Whelp, here's an example of Nintendo seeking to increase the value of NSO, and a good one too imo. It feels like Pac-Man CE but doesn't feel so out-of-control chaotic. It took me 3 tries to get 2nd place, about 8 times for 1st place, so this has some legs for an average Tetris 99 player as myself who likely will never see 1st place lol.
A Donkey Kong 99 or Frogger 99 wouldn't hurt my feelings at this rate. I'm guessing this is what the firmware update 12.0.0 was for then...
Can't wait to try it out and have my posterior handed to me!
@Jackpaza0508 ME NEITHER!
There doesn't seem to be a Ms. Pac-Man theme yet so not too tempted on DLC save for maybe single player.
Sigh. Is there really no Rally X theme? I can't believe that after all these years, a classic game like Rally X is still being forgotten. It sure is a shame.
@F_T_Wolf I think Tetris is massively rewarding. It's like 'the Game' on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Pac-man is a seminal game, but it's basically just running away from things, and so it doesn't really engage the brain in the same way (for me...). One of the Pac-Man games I've got (namco arcade pak?) Let's you play as a ghost with limited field of vision. That's quite fun.
I played it for awhile yesterday and had a lot of fun. The best I got was 2nd though. Can’t wait to play later and try for 1st.
I still occasionally play Pac Man 256 on my phone. That stuff is really addicting too.
Pac Man is an absolute classic that I love to play from time to time. I did 5 games of 99 this evening, and honestly that's enough for me. Glad it's free. No interest in the DLC. Will play it again in a few months. Still miss Mario 35.
For those of you complaining that Mario 35 was replaced by this game, you need to know this is a Namco product, not a Nintendo product. So don't blame this game on Nintendo's poor decisions.
I’ve got to sixth so far. Not used any of the advanced stuff yet.
Watched the video instead, but yeah...not sure if I'd like this. Don't even know when I'll mess with it because of Rise, but I feel like I would rather just play CE2 instead...Seeing this is kinda making me want to play that game again anyways. Eventually...because...you know...Rise. lol
I really wish it explained its own mechanics, but otherwise I agree! It’s a great game and I’m enjoying it more than Tetris 99. But why, ohh why couldn’t they have just added a number to Mario 35 each year :’(
@carlos82 Thanks a lot. That definitely helps, and I have red-black colourblindness, so probably explains not knowing what got me... definitely wasn’t ghosts!
No local wireless play multiplayer. Big con.
9/10 lol about a 6 or 7 let's be honest. It's nice to play it but it's the type of game most people will play max 1-2 hours without buying the extras it's already got dull for me after 3 or 4 attempts.
Koushun Takami deserves some crazy royalties considering how much his Battle Royale genre has blown up in the last decade
I can't wait for them to finally make Brooklyn 99!
I'm playing this more than I played Super Mario 35 or Tetris 99, and I like both Super Mario Bros. and regular Tetris a lot more than Pac-Man. You just have to get used to how fast-paced it is compared to regular Pac-Man, which doesn't take long.
I believe wall grinding for extra speed is in this game but haven't heard it mentioned. I could be wrong.
Side note: Maybe Switch should cycle these BR games as seasons. SMB 35 was a lot of fun.
The game is incredible and I’m glad I read this review for the slight explanation of what “stronger” means. I still haven’t cracked the top 5 but I prefer this way over Mario . I don’t think side scrollers work as well in this format I guess. Too bad they won’t make a Ms. Pac Man version or skin of this, I know there’s some weird rights issue where I guess it’s just always easier to not use her- but it’s ridiculous she’s not in this, and it’s ridiculous she’s not a skin option in Smash
@RudyC3 What's ya best score?
So Pac-Man 99, I can see this is gonna be as addictive, as Tetris 99 was. The highest I've made it so far is 30th place, definitely gonna have to work on that.
@noswitchbutidc 26379 (ranked 5,670 on the leaderboards according to Google Play). I don't think that's amazing but I'm proud of what I achieved anyway .
The paywall behind private matches won't make this game as popular as it could have been :/
I started playing this yesterday, and man, is it fun. I do wish it gave a little more insights into how to play the game strategically. For instance, I had no idea eating all the pellets on the board gave you a speed boost. I only learned this by reading this review.
Regardless, it’s a great pick up and play game — perfect for handheld on your couch.
It's fun but I think Ms. Pac-Man has the edge for it's variety of mazes. This game could use more than just one maze to make it better.
The 99 Series is the best battle royale ever
