Nintendo has just revealed that it is bringing the Wii title Zelda: Skyward Sword to the Switch this year.
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD will boast revised controls which not only allow you to replicate the motion interface of the original, but also permit the use of buttons and sticks for control – a vital point when you consider the existence of the Switch Lite.
The game will launch alongside a special set of Joy-Con, themed after the Master Sword and Hylian Shield.
Here's some PR:
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD: Originally released in 2011 for Wii, and depicting the earliest story in the series’ timeline – as well as the creation of the Master Sword itself – The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword now arrives on Nintendo Switch with smoother and more intuitive controls, in addition to improved framerate and graphics. In this enhanced version of the game, running at a smooth 60 frames per second, you can choose to play using motion control with the two Joy-Con controllers in a similar way to the original, or use new button-only controls to play the game with the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, in handheld mode, or on Nintendo Switch Lite. A set of themed Joy-Con controllers will also be released alongside the game: the right Joy-Con controller is themed after the Master Sword, while the left features the Hylian Shield motif. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD and the themed Joy-Con, launch for Nintendo Switch on 16th July. The game will be available for pre-order on Nintendo eShop shortly after the presentation.
Zelda: Skyward Sword HD launches on July 16th, 2021.

I was so happy about this. I love Skyward Sword. Being able to play with just buttons is great too.
I don't know how to feel about this, I'll wait a bit until it gets closer.
And the best thing: fluid 60 fps
How the hell did they pick this over wind waker. I'm sad now. I'm going to end up getting it anyway bc I never played it. (And when I mean by pick over I mean, why didn't they port the wii u port over to the switch? still cool tho)
I guess 720p is also HD.
Super happy about this - one of my favourite Zelda games - but...did anyone else also fail to see anything remotely High Definition in the footage we saw lol??
Those Joy-Cons do be lookin pretty hot
Nice but I was expecting a Zelda HD collection. Oh well beggers can't be choosers.
@Snatcher those will come too. At a later date.
But this game will be very very good with button controls.
LOL I can't say I'm surprised. Ports, and remakes and shovelware, oh my! I'm supposed to be happy that instead of finishing botw 2, they put out a mediocre Zelda game I beat before my 9 yr old son was even born. Yuck.
I'm conflicted about buying this as it's most likely going to be £50 and I already own it on Wii. However, those joycons look beautiful.
This and the ninja gaiden collection the only good thing about the direct for me. Was hoping for windwaker HD though but never played skyward sword so keen on this
Great, we get a remake of the worst 3d Zelda. Thanks, Nintendo. 2/10 for this direct, only saving grace was Mario Golf.
Oh boy 2021 is gonna be a whole lot of nothing isn’t it
Oh look.... Another port 😔
On a side note I have to have those joy con's, best looking ones made so far
$60 I bet. Still a great Direct in my opinion.
(Damn this comment section blew up)
@Kreko If they did what they did for Mario we won't get anything for Zelda. Nintendo always milked Mario much more.
@Octane Everything above 480p is HD.
Sadly the only interesting game from the direct for me, a game I already own for about 10 years
@Kreko yea really, hope there is still something else in the works. Skyward Sword fine but I would have preferred any other game over this one haha.
@Snatcher Cause the Wii U already had Twilight Princess HD and Wind Waker HD. Now Skyward Sword HD is for the Switch.
Good for those that never got to play this, but it really is the most linear Zelda. Not my favourite in the series but it has its own charm
@Snatcher exactly my thoughts
I really liked this game on the wii but they need to remove the padding they crammed into the end of the game to make it longer. It really detracts from the experience. Also the birds need to be faster and more enjoyable to use.
I really hate that Nintendo only ups the resolution of past games and doesn’t do a lot of remasters
I thought they would just bring over WW and TP HD in one bundle.
Having only played BOTW and about half of OOT3D, I'm looking forward to trying this
@Kirbyboy92 I mean ports, I just wanted them to port it to the switch.
Not sure whether I'll grab it or not but I do really like Skyward Sword so I'm glad to see it get a re-release with more control options.
Happy for this but still waiting for a Zelda collection, now they can make it with OoT, WW and TP.
@15roundTKO
Don’t forgot what basically looks like $60 DLC that can’t even make this year lol.
THE GROOSE IS LOOSE ONCE AGAIN
“HD”... it looked ugly in the trailer! Some of the Hylian faces (with the lips!) looked grotesque. I tried this late in the day of Wii and couldn’t get into it because of the motion controls, but I understand some of the dungeons are the best in the series so definitely picking this up and playing it in button mode.
Hopefully they’ve overhauled the hours long tutorial sections...
I remember that this game was a husk! heres to hoping they also port windwaker hd
@Kreko disappointing?
Are you a madlad?
Splatoon 3, a new fighter in smash, mario golf, dlc for animal crossing, age of calamity, skyward sword hd, and tons of 3d party support is disappointing?
My god.
Joy-Con looks nice. I like that the motion controls look more responsive and the game looked really smooth framerate wise. I hope some QoL fixes like the annoying messages when you pick up items every new session being disabled are a thing.
Lets go! I've been waiting. But pyra ruined it
What a trollish move this was. Its times like this I wish NL would let me use MUCH stronger words. And I know where to put those fancy, overpriced, drifty controllers Nintendo. 😣
@SalvorHardin Yes, yes it is. 2021 is looking really rough for first party Nintendo games.
this and triangle are my fav things in this direct
I wanted this so badly. But lord mercy I’m just not a fan of the controls. Even the button controls aren’t any better. What the even heck
So there was a theory that if Zelda collection comes, it'll follow the Ganon story.
Skyward Sword is not a Ganon game.
Could do with new joy cons! >_>
This was a pleasant surprise. But the last announcement just trumped everything, IMO
They literally tried to convince people Skyward Sword was like Breath of the Wild. Such desperation to convince people this was a good idea.
I think this is one of the better Directs. New Mario Golf, a LOT of third party games, new stuff for Animal Crossing, Pyra in Smash, Splatoon 3.
I am very satisfied. And it is going to be a great couple of months. I do hope Splatoon 3 is an early 2022 release.
And I do hope the button controls for Skyward Sword are decent, the days of playing on the TV are (just about) over for me.
Outer Wilds not getting a lot of love but I for one cannot wait to play it.
Definitely getting those joy con. Hope fi isn’t as annoying this time
@UmbreonsPapa yep!
As it should!
Ive always wanted to play this game in full, but I hated the waggle. Im very happy that this is going to be available.
That’s was piss poor Nintendo.
I’m gonna send out a search party for your in house game studios, I hope they are all ok.
That was the worst game presentational I have every seen and I’ve seen them all.
I have no other words apart from pathetic and thank you for wasting 50 minutes of my life.
A skyward sword looked so old and dated.
Oh well just me and the PS5 now.
@sanderev that’s not strictly true, it’s all dependent on the resolution relative to the size of the display
@ukaskew same!
Such a strong start in this direct.
Wind Waker would’ve looked so nice on the Switch in handheld mode, Skyward Sword looks incredibly dated.
Splatoon 3 looks good for 2022 but there’s not much for this year unfortunately
Really excited for this! It makes me hopeful that TP HD and WW HD get solo releases later this year as well!
I always though Skyward Sword to be one of the more underated Zelda titles, maybe solving that motion control problem will invite more people to play this game. Sure hope it does, cause its a solid entry
Apart from this the Direct was wick.
Splatoon 3 being the last game was such a disappointment, I know it has a big following but it still looks just like the first Wii U game never mind the second.
Jeez — the amount of complaints from people are insane. Why can't people just be happy? Personally, even though I wanted Wind Waker, this game is also very welcome. I never got to play it when it came out so I'm looking forward to experiencing it for the first time ever.
@Dezzy70 are you crazy?
Or are your standards the size of mount fuji?
Looking forward to this. I never did play Skyward Sword on Wii. And those Joy-Con are stunning. And I really, REALLY, REAAAAAALLLY do not need any more Joy-Con.
I was hoping for this to be bundled with Twilight Princess HD though.
Once Mario 35th has ended expect a full 35th announcement for Zelda. Skyward Sword is just the start.
Hopefully they will remember it is Metroid's 35th Anniversary too this year with at least Metroid Prime Trilogy HD.
@ukaskew Same here! I was actually pleasantly surprised by the announcement. I never played the game and I could any time I want (I have an Xbox Series X and Game Pass) but I haven't yet. I'm not sure if I should wait for the Switch version or go ahead and play it on the Xbox. Either way, it's awesome to know it's coming to Nintendo.
After this direct ive lost all my faith in nintendo. My switch will continue gathering dust. Thank god for M$ and Sony 🥰
@Snatcher they picked it because this one hasn’t been remade yet. They’ve already remade windwaker AND twilight princess.
Skyword Sword was overdue and makes complete sense, it was THE ONLY mainline Zelda game to only ever appear on 1 console, the Wii. TP and BotW were both dual releases, and the older games, even the handhelds, have been ported or reimagined.
I played this already, it put me to sleep, I call it "Link's Lullaby". It did make me appreciate how good TP was, I didn't like that much until playing SS.
Those Joycon are sweet, may buy.
I prefer motion controls. Glad they’re keeping them but again, I already own this game and don’t know why I’d fork out for a remaster. Might just upscale it with Dolphin since I haven’t tried Wii games with it yet.
@Dezzy70 Yeah that was about as disappointing as it can get for a first party game fan
This was worse than I thought. I figured there was no Zelda 35 BotW 2 news, so 50 minutes of boring for a SaGa Frontier remake for me. Splatoon 3 announced waaaaay too early.
Skeptical.
Even without the motion controls game was mediocre at best.
The long slog through each area is so boring and uninspired. Dont think button controls can redeem that.
Love the joycons though.
Is there a Direct for Indie Devs? Some of the best games I have ever played have been from Indie developers anyway.
@Kreko if they would have ported those over people would be like ‘wuh wuh wuh another wii U port’.
Unsatisfied people everywhere.
There were so many games to choose from in this direct, which focussed on the next couple of months only.! Look forward for more this year, as they said...
Totally makes sense to see this after Windwaker and Twilight Princess got rereleases on the wii u. Will thoroughly enjoy playing through this one again, especially with my pro controller rather than a wiimote that needs fresh batteries ever 30 minutes for the motion controls to work properly.
Hopefully the other games will be ported before long too now that they've caught up on ports... or maybe we'll see Link Between Worlds HD next?
A port of the only bad Zelda game in ages... Hurray
Can I use the Ring Fit ring instead?
Why?
The joy cons look nice though
@TMNHertl yeah, every couple of months called Indie world or indie showcase (depending on the region that broadcasts it).
@Snatcher Wind Waker is on 2 consoles already, and i own it on GameCube and Wii U so it's nice to get Skyward Sword for me as it's the only Zelda game i'm missing.
Wind Waker will be released on Switch in 2022 or late 2021 anyway.
@TMNHertl Yes, Nintendo occasionally does indie game showcases. There was one on December 15th apparently.
@Nerdfather1 what are we supposed to be excited about? It's a bunch of old stuff, sketchy stuff, and a Splatoon thats forever in the future
Hopefully Fi is toned down
@Ventilator I don't own I wii u or a gamecube so I gusse its a me problem but still.
This is one of the worst directs so far and we waited so long for this just to find out 2022 is the year to wait for 👍
The second half of this year looks so lame, here's hoping Nintendo have another direct lined up with some actual heavy hitters arriving the rest of this year
Glad this is getting the HD treatment
@Snatcher Wind Waker and TPP already exist in 1080p on Wii U, and i guess both is coming to Switch later.
I'm honestly kind of heartbroken they didn't port over Twilight Princess and Wind Waker HD. I thought that that would be the least they would do for the 35th anniversary since they haven't been brought over to the switch yet somehow. At least we got a Skyward Sword port, even if it IS one of my least favorite games in the series. Those joycons look pretty nice though.
Best thing about an otherwise terrible Direct
the only disappointment in this amazing Direct was that stupid announcement that they have nothing new to say about BOTW2 ....Geez at least the name! Give us the name at least!
too much to read. So here is one thing, did they remove the glitch when trying to get hylian shield and if you go the wrong path then your data is lost? I've played this game so long ago and l remember l had to do a certain way without losing my data.
Finallly a remaster i don't own on Wii U already.
Gonna buy Skyward.
Hopefully the standard controls are good, I really don't wanna play the game again with motion controls. Hopefully Windwaker and Twilight Princess are on the horizon as well.
Skyward Sword is an awesome game and clearly a precursor to BOTW. It's one of the only ones not to get the HD treatment so it was the obvious choice.
This is my favorite Zelda game! But... I'm more excited about the controllers because I've already played through the game twice and don't want to drop money on something I already have.
Kinda sad that they released this game for switch and l'm not going to tell why. its not because l don't like the game.
This and legend of mana were the only decent things in that direct. And that's mainly cause i never got to play either
Probably one of the most boring directs I've had to force myself to sit through
Heres hoping the Button control scheme is solid for Skyward. Love the game but my joycons are Broken due to drift like so many others are.
The Direct was fine overall - but this announcement sucks. How can they justify charging full price for a single Wii port when they’re selling 3 Mario games for the same price?
Meanwhile, we already have 2 perfectly good remasters of substantially better 3D Zelda games, stranded on a system no one is rushing to play anytime soon.
I get why they’re doing this - Skyward Sword was the worst selling recent Zelda by a long shot and they want it to find an audience. It just should have been in a Zelda 35th Collection, instead of this really poor-value single port.
I was hoping this would be coming at some point, but I expected this during a LoZ themed direct. The right joy-con swordplay control scheme might take some getting used to...
@Nerdfather1
Because peoples' tastes differ. Skyward Sword is my least favourite Zelda. The warrior games, battle games etc aren't my thing.
Surely some of us have the right, for want of a better word, to be disappointed in the offerings from this ND.
Guess the only new game I will be playing this year is SSHD, a game I've previously owned and completed!
Wack announcement. I’d take ww hd all day over this. This is gonna be a looooonnnggg year.
Yes!! SS is an awesome game.
Top-5 Zelda game to me.
SS >> WW (IMO)
Though I’d still love WW on Switch, too. Hopefully more Zelda announced in the Fall.
Non-motions controls! Did not expect that but SO happy! Might just be buying a Switch this year!
that's a shame. would rather OoT/Majoras mask compilation
I played it on Wii but didn't finish it, I just got so frustrated with the motion controls on a boss battle so I gave up which is ashame because I was really enjoying the game! Will definetly be looking forward to getting this on Switch.
I had really hoped for CDi remakes...
@15roundTKO
It most definitely was. I’m sad about it and frustrated at the same time.
The switch launched like a rocket, but now it has nothing for me.
At least they acknowledged BOTW 2's existence after two years of complete silence
Lol. Confirmed £50. Nintendo get away with such sh***y practices and every one laps it up.
I agree that it was a bit disappointing. A couple of highlights, but mostly disappointing.
In an age when they’re competing for my time with my PS5 and PC, Nintendo really need to do a bit better. Mario Golf looks ace, but Skyward Sword looked really old. When Sony and Blue Point are putting out re-makes like Demon’s Souls there’s really no excuse for Nintendo to make the bare minimum effort. Lazy.
Quit hating on the flipping game people this is my 3rd most favorite game ever, IT DESERVED THIS
Not the best Zelda game for me.. when dude popped up saying there’s no news on Zelda my heart broke.. I sat through all that weird anime crap for nothing.. at least Mario Golf looked good.. still no Pokémon Snap 2 update or any word on a possible Mario Kart 9.. so disappointed
@NOALink Except that's not at all what was said or even remotely the context. It made a direct line to features in one game being used and refined in another for those who may have never played Skyward Sword or a Zelda before BotW, which makes a lot of sense to do
Okay, I see they wanted to milk the game because it didn't sell well but still... I expected a bit more for Zelda's anniversary. Like, a new 2D-Zelda or something. Switch is more and more becoming a pure port machine.
@Kreko stop referring yourself as being ‘the people’ and we’ll be fine.
Entitled.
A brilliant Zelda for me, even tho wasn’t a fan of the motion controls. Glad we can use buttons and sticks! Yep can’t wait for this xxxxx
@chipia they haven’t started celebrating the anniversary yet. Haven’t even finished celebrating Mario’s one...
Its gonna be 60 dollars but I don't care.
I am still gonna buy it
@FroZtedFlakerZz amen!
@k8sMum That's a totally fair point. I didn't mean to sound condescending.
Nothing like paying 60 bucks on a 10yo port that has the letters H and D attached. Only from Nintendo.
Could be the definitive version of the game with the more precise and reliable analog stick control for the swords attack and stuff like that (hopefully while also offering optional gyro for additional aiming on the likes of bows).
I'm super happy. I've been waiting for this game to come to Switch since... always. I've played WW HD and TP HD recently. I have a hankering for Skyward and it's great to see it come to a system beyond the Wii's 480p. Button-based control scheme is almost exactly what I expected, though I very much enjoyed the motion controls and didn't have a problem (though I knew people who did). I always figured the Joycon would produce better controls--it's 10 years of development improvements after all. I'm just happy that hopefully more people will get to play through this story. It's really a great compliment to BotW IMO, especially if BotW is your introduction to the series. The whole "Goddess Hylia" and Master Sword speaking thing just makes more sense after playing SS.
I'm not disappointed about anything because 1) I know this isn't the last we'll hear about the Zelda 35th. In fact, they didn't mention it at all so it's impossible that this is the last. They can still give us more but I didn't expect them to show up and dump 5 ports on us and the sequel to BotW in 50 minutes. And my usual statement that the team that ports isn't the team that makes BotW so there's no "instead of" to it. Nintendo can port non-stop and it not slow down their development of new games. Their new games take time because they want them to be awesome.
Looking forward to hearing more Zelda info this year. SS is probably my 3rd favorite Zelda after OoT and MM, so this is a day-1 purchase for me.
Amazing and the joy con designs as well.
I’m really not a graphics snob but this game looks so poor it’s quite mind blowing they dredged this up for one of the final reveals of the direct. Stuff it somewhere in the beginning of the presentation if you must, not end on it!
I really hoped Nintendo would go all out on this one and take the competition head on, but that was a flop. Mario Golf was nice. NMH3 expected, but good. But nothing to genuinely get excited about here.
And as always, the negativity of many fans never disappoints me, but well, I won't say more, only just enjoy and entertain your frustration and whining instead of enjoying games for fun...
If only we could harness the furious energy of a Nintendo fan's misplaced sense of entitlement...
I enjoyed Skyward Sword on the Wii. I'll play through again with button controls which is a great addition. If it's not for you don't bother with it. Writing off the entire year/company/console/universe because you feel slighted by game announcements is really odd.
@SakuraHaruka Half these people commenting have no idea of what fun is.
I’ll judge this game solely on the price. I guess I’ll also judge it if it doesn’t run at 1080p. If this is full price good luck getting an anniversary package
I'd give this direct a 7 out of 10 for me. If I was into RPGs would be a solid 10. Nintendo are honestly playing a loosing game as no matter how much they churn out the fans always expect more. While Sony fans are happy with the odd exclusive and Xbox fans are happy with anything (own all except PS5 but will grab one at some point.) Nintendo do need to do some more full fat directs this year though. Covid has ballsed up so much.
@Nerdfather1
It's ok, I just get tired of being called a hater because my tastes differ from someone elses. You didn't do that, but there's lots of it in the comments below us.
@Octane You're a mod, act like one.
@sixrings you'll cry regardless of the resolution.
Friendly is breaching the trade descriptions act
@X68000 i’m usually friendly. Just not to entitled brats who think their opinion is the world’s opinion.
Aside from new games, this was my top choice for a port. Hadn’t played before because sold my Wii long before it came out and hated the Wii mote controls. It’s a new game for me so don’t mind paying full price for it. Although could have don’t with OoT/MM and WW/TP doible packs..
Honestly not excited for this. However, at least they confirmed that BOTW 2 news will come this year.
I wonder how all the other controls map when using button-only mode?
@Wavey84 I'd give the direct 2 out of ten and feel generous. Especially after 500 days and considering it was 47 minutes of nothing great. Commenters who complain about complaining, I want to know what in this direct or the last year could possibly thrill them as the new first party content is nonexistent and everything else is extremely niche.
@WiltonRoots It doesn't prohibit me from being critical. I don't think it looks up to date with other 'new' games. And given that this is likely a $60 port, I have every reason to mandate it does.
Sweet. Even though I was hoping for Wind Waker, I can't help but be hyped for this. This is one of the few 3D Zelda titles I have yet to play. And now it has HD, portability, and physical controls... yeah I'm sold lol.
Now it is boring with the amount of ports and remasters of old games. Did they mistake the switch for the junkyard of gaming?
Well, at least the Joy-Cons are nice.
The man who made the game himself is apologizing and hoping for fans to give it a chance, knowing it is a downgrade to the 2017 Breath of the wild
@mezoomozaa yes and it somehow makes them more money than making new games sadly. Nintendo used to be full of brilliant artists, now it is a corporate nightmare.
The most beautiful Joy-Cons ever, BUT... drift. 😔
even Links Awakening is more worthy of the 60€ for the effort done.
I played this to 100% completion on the Wii, and still don't have the desire to ever replay it... Bad combination of being too linear with way too much padding. Although, the gameplay and dungeons make it enjoyable enough. I'd still recommend it, if you're absolutely starving for more Zelda, right now.
I'm gonna hold out for a OoT/MM Grezzo port or ALBW HD, until BOTW 2.
I never played this, so I'm looking forward to finally getting the chance. That is all!
@Octane Maybe so, but as a mod surely the role is to be as Switzerland and neutral as possible whilst maintaining a level playing field? For people in the comment sections who don't feel the same way as you they will feel the mods are slanted in a certain direction that doesn't favour them? I just feel it's not a good look on the site if the mods are complaining when some punters aren't that bothered.
@Nerdfather1 Comment boards are primarily for negative people to come and gripe.
@Friendly they must be a trump supporter
Gonna grab those joycons. The joycons and splatoon 3 are the only things really interesting to me, other than that the direct was kinda bad in my opinion.
Skyward Sword is one of my favourite games of all time, the controls were such a huge part of the experience, once I got used to them I was hooked. Solid 40 hours spent with it when it released. The final boss battle was epic. The only thing that worries me about this remaster are the Joycon. They’re awful, tiny sticks and hard clicky buttons. I wish I could use my Wii remote plus and nunchuk with this but that won’t be happening. Hopefully they’ve fixed that save data bug too!
I legit screamed when they showed this. I gotta have those joycons! So excited!!!!!
So beautiful. Glad it got announced as it's the only zelda game I never finished. Finally, I'll be able to 😊
I never played Skyward Sword so this will be a brand new experience for me. I'm glad it has the option of motion and button controls (wasn't really a fan of Wii motion controls) so I will try both of them out. Hopefully Nintendo brings Wind Waker to Switch also so I can play that for the first time as well. I like those Joy Con and I'll gladly buy them if I get a chance to do so.
Sorry Nintendo, I can't fight The Imprisoned a hundred times again!
@Ryu_Niiyama I have never played Skyward Sword. I am genuinely looking forward to trying this out. It was part of a whole era of games I completely turned my back on. I went from GC to Wii U when the Wii U was already on its way out.
@DTfeartheBEARD Wind Waker is a fantastic game, you'd love it. People moan about the sailing but I found it therapeutic...
@henrysbloggin personally I think it was HD, it just reuses the old textures so it looks like the original. But I could definitely tell everything looked smoother
@FluffiestP1llow yeah, I wasn’t really interested in much of the other stuff either. I’m personally picking up skyward sword, the age of calamity dlc and miitopia, that game is so wacky and charming. Fall guys and apex legends are pretty nice to have. But WHERE IS GENSHIN IMPACT
@Snatcher Grab a Gamecube controller and play it on Wii then. Skyward Sword deserved an HD remaster if Wind Waker got one.
@SSGodLink Apologies, I've just written about a billion news stories in the space of an hour, you can give me one mistake surely
@Linux7055 I don't own one of those ether It got broken a long time ago.
@WiltonRoots Thanks I hope so. TBH I've always skipped playing Zelda games all the way back to the NES because they never looked like my type of game. I know the love and praise that most games receive so I'm willing to give them a shot. I really enjoyed Breath of the Wild and Link's Awakening.
I don’t care what you all say. I’m thrilled it’s coming and I’ll happily take a port of Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD on top of that despite already owning them on Wii U.
Doesn’t look very hd
@MisterThief yeah im pretty upset we didn't get anything in genshin impact, I played it on mobile and thought it was fantastic. And miitopia was a hilarious mess (not in a bad way) I've yet to pick up age of calamity. I've been meaning to but just haven't gotten to it quite yet. Maybe the expansion pass will change that. And I would be excited for fall guys but apparently its pretty dead now but ik not sure how true that is
@NOALink do you really have to be so negative and complain about everything? You must be a fun person to be around (not).
@Sourcecode thats good. We aren't trying to make you dislike the games. We're just voicing our opinions, both good and bad. There's nothing wrong with that
@WiltonRoots ooh you are in for a treat then! I only beat it once (I tend to beat Zelda games multiple times) but I very much enjoyed it. Looking forward to returning. It was funny how I went from “oh I want that monhun procon” to “F that procon, gotta sell a kidney for those Zelda joycons!”
I’d been wishing for zelda joycons rather than a system to save my budget and I am glad Nintendo came through!
@WiltonRoots That would be quite boring. I'm not here to tell what people can and cannot say. I just to make sure they don't break the community rules.
Don’t see a mojaras mask here, or a twilight princess. But I guess this will do for now...
@FluffiestP1llow never said there was 😁
@Sourcecode oh I apologize i misread what you said!
@FluffiestP1llow never played fall guys on console or PC so I think it will be a fun experience for me personally. Hopefully the switch release will spark some new engagement in the game
@JPRN46 You would do well not to make broad assumptions about people based upon anonymous comment section posts.
I'm also one of the biggest Nintendo die-hards you'll never meet, having owned every single home console (and nearly every portable) they have ever sold. Objectively, this Nintendo Direct left a lot to be desired, as did Skyward Sword, which is pretty much the only Zelda game I could not force myself to finish.
@meeto_1 don’t sell short, they don’t simply upscale the thing, they also increase the price for doing you that favour...
@Snatcher Fair enough, but I don't think Nintendo could justify rereleasing Wind Waker ahead of Skyward Sword.
@Linux7055 I just wish they would have done it at the same time, bc it makes me feel like nintendo is just going to toss it aside plus its zeldas 35th I was hoping for somthing like mario.
@Octane Yep being a mod is a tough role to be fair - but the best thing to do is be completely neutral and leave your opinions out of the comments and save them for another space or people will pull it up. In the midst of all the constant bedwetting there needs to be a voice of reason to step in and chill things out. And there's a lot of sodden mattresses in here.
No forced motion controls!? Sign me up!
Not really sure about this, that control scheme looks a bit cumbersome and unintuitive to use, even from that small demo we saw.
Didn't actually look hd either. I dunno I'll see when it drops. Not gonna pre order it, that's for sure.
Wow, it surely didn’t age well...
I really hoped for a WW/TP pack as well.
Leave the money on the table, i guess.
@MisterThief oh for sure. Its definitely my kind of game. I'm just worried about how active it will be. It might ruin my experience if there's no one else playing lol
I love Skyward Sword, top 3 Zelda for me. Can't wait to play this on the go!
I shall buy this. 1st zelda game for me.
@Snatcher You expected too much. I think the All Star collection is only a Mario thing. They never done anything like that for Zelda so I'm not surprised it didn't happen.
Finished the Wii version right around the time BOTW came out. I’ll skip it but it really was a much better game than people have it credit for.
That $60 dollar pricing point is starting to really wear on me. For a 10 year old Wii game with no significant enhancements barring playing comfortable, I'm gonna have to wait for a sale. At least 3D World had a whole new side mode and most of the Wii U ports they've had some new content (barring DKC:TF). Shame, Nintendo.
I wish I expected anything different. But full price for this game is a big ask. I guess that Zelda collection is not happening.
I love this game and I think it’s the best of the OOTlikes, but I’m puzzled by removing the motion controls. The motion controls were central to the game and I don’t see how it would work without them.
@Linux7055 Nintendo actually had done a zelda collection for one anniversary on the gamecube. It featured original zelda all the way up to MM with a demo for windwaker. It was called the Zelda collectors.
60 bucks is some insane price tag. As much as I loved this game back in the day, it's hard to justify paying that much to re-experience a (mostly unchanged) remaster.
Skyward Sword is the one console Zelda I’ve never beaten. I loathed the motion controls (which is sad because I thought it had some of the coolest Zelda dungeons). Will definitely be picking this up to try the new control option. Still holding out hope for the other 3D Zeldas though. I’m itching to return to those happy Zelda memories.
I'm all for more Zelda games coming to the Nintendo Switch, this will definitely be a day one buy for me. The Skyward Sword edition joy-cons, look pretty sweet as well if I do say so myself.
Super pumped. Makes you appreciate how certain art styles age a bit better, though (Wind Waker).
SS is amazing and I hope people give the game a chance, it’s one of my favourites. Otherwise, I thought the direct was ok, 6.5/10
I just will never understand Nintendo.
Possibly the most frustrating company on earth to support....
They’ve so many loved franchises that people are desperate for and what do we get?
Mario Golf, yet another splatoon and an old Zelda game and a bunch of games i have zero interest in.
I’ve been a fan since 1992 when I got my first Super Nintendo and an now in my mid 40’s so I should stop having high hopes for their announcements.
Just give me a NEW Mario kart already!
I played and enjoyed this one on the Wii. Skyward Sword is an amazing game, but I'll have to see what the HD version adds to the table before I....
Oh who am I kidding. It's Zelda. I'll be buying it! XD Those Joycons look pretty awesome too! For those of you who think the Guardians in BotW are terrifying, wait until you get a load of certain sections of this game....
I never really got into Skyward Sword because of the motion controls so I’m intrigued by the button controls. This will probably be a purchase for me. Those new joycons... those will be mine!
Do the modified controls let us map a button to “turn off Fi”?
Would've been a lot cooler if it was a collection with this and the HD versions of Twilight Princess & Wind Waker. That would've been pretty cool for Zelda's Anniversary.
Eh, I guess I'll rent it since it has a no motion control option but it still doesn't look very appealing to me. I hope we still get a Wind Waker/TP port or bundle ported to Switch.
The special edition Joy-Cons look nice, but since they'll surely have the same stick drift problems, no thanks.
@NOALink For first party games in the first half of the year there are the Super Mario 3d World, those two detective games, Skyward Sword HD, that DC Teen Power game, Mario Golf, Pokemon Snap, and Japan got that Buddy Bond game.. Usually the first half of the year is weaker than that. And on top of that, the 3rd party lineup looks much better than in previous years
Oh look! One of the worst Zelda ever is having a remaster. yaaaay
Ok fine, I know many enjoyed it (god why?) and is cool to see they remastered a wii game instead of another wii u one. I never liked this game and is the only zelda title I sold after I finished it, wishing to never touch it again.
I don't know why they chose to port the worst Zelda game (in my opinion obviously), I would have been happy with Wind Waker or perhaps a port of Majora's Mask... but Skyward Sword?
I'm very disappointed.
Just my two cents on the matter. I didn’t care for this one when it came out on Wii. I just got really bored of it, just too much backtracking and I lost interest.
I’m sure there’s a good game in there somewhere, and for those who loved it, that’s great for them.
@sanderev "Everything above 480p is HD"
Final Fantasy XIII ran in 1024x576 on XBox360. Such HD, very wow.
I played it on PS3 later. Ran in 720p. Usually I don't care about graphics, but that really made a lot of difference...
@Laoak you could just do the joy cons. In fact, I might do just that lol
@Tyranexx I know what you’re talking about...I dreaded those so much...
@Octane "HD ready"
Bah, thats what they used to market 720p TV's with.
I remember asking my dad what they meant with "HD ready" vs "Full HD" back in the day.
My dad: Well son.. I believe the "HD ready" can be upgraded to "Full HD" with an expansion card"
He never was very technical...
After the Wii version, the release on Wii U and now Switch...no thanks.
This is the only non-handheld Zelda I've never completed (minus Zelda 2... bleh) so was the best announcement without doubt.
I am a rabid Zelda fan, but this is easily my least favorite that I’ve played. Too bad.
Here's a comparison video between this and the Wii version. Note that these are just trailer footage and not the actual game.
Very happy about this announcement. Skyward Sword is my second favorite Zelda - in large part because of the motion sword controls, believe it or not. They worked well for me even on the Wii, and made me feel more immersed in the gameplay, more so than just pressing buttons. The joy-cons seem like a perfect fit for this game, which I'll look forward to using (no cord this time, sweet). But I'm also very glad that they're including a motion-less option. Most people hated the motion controls - and therefore the game itself - so hopefully that option will let more people enjoy the game.
Love the game, definitely want to play it again, but not for $60.
IMO it does have the best dungeons, items and sword combat in any of the Zelda games. I'll wait for a sale, which will take years.
@15roundTKO
Um, You should be happy that they take their time with Breath of the Wild 2. That means you'll get a better game in the end.
Also Nintedo have multiple teams working on different titles as well as outsourcing projects to others.
I highly doubt that they would delay Breath of the Wild 2 for this.
This is just happening separate to the Breath of the Wild developement.
I realize many love skyward sword, but for me, its my least favourite 3d zelda game. Maybe playing on pro controller will be a better experience? (I despise motion controls, thats just me)
Also, wonder if these special joycons have inards or the same fault prone design
well, i will pass. same like with twilight princess - this game is just 100% boring to me. i wished they would bring wind waker on switch too. at least i will save money this year ^^ sonic's 30th games will be enough for me anyways haha. and i start to play wind waker on my gamecube again - did not want to start, because i was hoping for a HD-WiiU port, bc. wind waker is my fav. zelda, the only one i really like. i never liked the snes/nes ones. my first one was ocarina of time, was good, but nothing is better than wind waker
@DaniPooo Things get more confusing because where I am, "HD Ready" also existed, but referred only to any TV 720p and up that had no built-in HD TV tuner. Over here, 720p was always considered HD because the broadcast standards were either 720p or 1080i. I don't even remember seeing 1080p screens in the early days of HD. On a side note, I hate that TV manufacturers keep moving the goalposts on resolution.
The character design for this game but it was enjoyable to play. If this wasn't a Nintendo game it would have cost $40, it's just an hd port.
I'm looking forward to finally finishing this thanks to the new controls. Being left handed, I found the sword controls a nightmare on Wii and gave up on the game. I'd hoped they might add a mirrored control scheme in any port or remake but I'll take more traditional controls 🤓
Took me 6 months to beat Skyward sword. Why? It’s rather lame. This is my least favorite Zelda game right along side Phantom Hour glass and Spirit tracks. I have nothing but bad memories of trying to beat this game but constantly falling asleep or getting bored. Definitely not excited for this.
The worst part? The last portion of the game... for those that have yet to play it- you’ll know what I mean. Definitely won’t be replaying this. 1 time is enough.
They fixed this game, finally. Been waiting for years.
Didn't like its motion control. Zelda is awesome, Wii Sports Resort if fantastic and I'm still playing it occasionally.
But Wii Zelda Sports: Skyward Sword Resort...No.
And this was the most up-in-the air port, too. Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are all that's left - and seemingly yet more likely down the road - for all Zelda flagships to become fully portable!
I have to say I'm somewhat baffled (not such much here but other sites) by the dislike for Skyward Sword, am I really the only person who considers it an absolute masterpiece?! I get it in that yes the Wind Waker is the preferred choice I guess, but that in no way should take away from Skyward Sword, genuinely one of the best games I've ever played. Especially that entire genius section with the time hopping robot things... (It's been a while and is a tad fuzzy! )
Cool I guess, but as a left handers I want to swing my sword with my left hand.
The timing was impeccable, since I just finished my first replay of this game since its release. It's held up fine and I'm just happy to see the Wii library being preserved with faithful ports while supporting more conventional options. I anticipate this port mending this game's reputation given its strengths, with its contrast from BotW also making the game feel far more fresh and novel than it did at release. Have fun, everyone!
Well at least I can play the game now.
Not complaining... but did anybody else notice that Mario Galaxy was a hit Wii game that was included with two other big Mario games on a $60 collection... and Skyward Sword was a hit Wii game NOT included with other Zelda games for $60? I’m getting it, I loved the Wii one... had the gold nunchuck to match the Wiimote... might get those joy-cons and hope they don’t get all smeary and drift... but I’m watching you, Nintendo. I’m watching you...
@rjejr Twilight Princess was even a triple release: Gamecube version (which many forgot), Nintendo Wii and Wii U.
After Zelda Wind Waker and Twilight Princess got their HD release, it is only consequential that Skyward Sword also gets its HD rendition, which will hopefully eliminate the blurry textures in the distance.
And to those of you who complain about the upcoming SS release on Switch, here is something to chew on: Hardly any other Zelda game has such a fascinating story, and all characters have their own unique personality. (And I remember a poll here on NL, in which most participants voted that princess Zelda from SS is the most liked Zelda of all releases). Much better than in BotW IMHO. And yes, the game is linear, but you get to see some of the finest REAL dungeons and not the copy & paste & edit-style shrines/titans. Just think of the Ancient Cistern (and its magnificent boss battle), or the ship on the sand ocean. This is what makes Zelda Zelda! And although the world is smaller, it feels more purposeful.
£49.99 is seriously strong money. Just to smash that home, when you search for it on the eShop the Wii U version pops up for £17.99.
Yeah, this one is a pass. Skyward Sword (for me, and from looking at the comments quite a few others) is one of the worst 3D Zelda games available. Taking the motion controls out of the picture for a moment, level designs are not the best either. Way too much backtracking to make it even remotely enjoyable (for me anyway)
And it's nice they've added motion-less controls, but Nintendo are aware of the drift right?. Using the right stick for the sword movements, it's a nice idea but i can only imagine it wearing out quick.
The Joy Cons look great but by God the game announcement was awful. 60 quid for that game is an absolute farce. I wouldn't have minded if it was similar to the Mario collection but having it full price for just that one game has put me off completely.
Skyward Pass is not my favorite and this is not the one I was hoping for. I am looking for Ocarina of Time. The motion controls are a good thing though. I may wait considering the price as I have already have too much to play now.
Played through this on launch on the Wii and admittedly it gets a bit dull in places and at times doesn't feel as epic as other Zelda games but I can see why this is coming to Switch since not that many people played it even on the Wii because of how late the game came out and it is probably the worst selling Zelda game on a home console. I see a lot of people disappointed by the announcements of these Directs and I think the only reason people get so disappointed is they listen to rumours of what will be announced or what others want in comments and outside of releasing everything you want they are going to be a let down.
@Excalibur_120 I actually agree the dungeons are great in this game and are it's strength as well as the story. The bits in between can be less fun though since as you say it is very linear. I did like that you could upgrade all the weapons and other things too rather than simply finding them in a chest something they improved upon in botw.
@Ramen756 Same! And the music was all serene until one of three things happened....The terror in that tune hands down beats the BotW Guardian theme in my book.
Tons of new expensive joy-cons and still cheap and faulty inside.
@TheMadManSFX I might wait also, but I think it is more reasonably priced than the Link’s Awakening remaster (which should have been priced at the Link Between Worlds level).
For this, we know the non-motion controls are already a quality of life improvement. Hopefully the HD graphics are also improved.
I don’t remember how camera controls worked on the Wii. With the right stick as your sword, it can’t be used for the camera, but the Wii wasn’t dual stick anyways.
@Tandy255 At least with Link's Awakening, a lot of work genuinely went into remaking the game, as well as the Dungeon Maker. Here all they've done is the bare minimum for it to be a functional game on the Switch. No new content, a pure remaster with nothing else.
There is strangely always a group of people ready and excited to defend and even applaud Nintendo's shady current business practices. This is why we don't get new or nice things. I will save someone a reply and just tell myself now: I should be happy with a mediocre ten year old game and controllers that are fundamentally defective. Thx
Echoing previous comments, but $60 for SSHD is ridiculous. I respect Nintendo and their premium pricing of content, they value their IP and work, but how do you charge $60 for a ten year old game with such modest improvements? Even freaking EA is more with it! Mass Effect Legendary has THREE huge RPGs all with substantial reworking for the same MSRP.
I agree with others, this should have been in a pack similar to Mario 3D All-Stars with comparable pricing. I've never played this one and heard it's one of the worst Zeldas, so I'll pass until it's $30 or less.
@Excalibur_120 There are a bunch of Zelda games w/ multiple releases, I feel like OoT has been on several as well. My point was if you look at all of the main Zelda games - not counting CD-i, does anybody count the CD-i games? - then Skyword Sword was the only big one to only ever appear on 1 console, the Wii, now 2 generations old. So to me, it was always a matter of when, not "if", it would get the "HD" treatment like WW and TP. It looks modern enough it didn't need to be remastered like Between Worlds or Awakening, just throw "HD" after it's name. Which they literally did, "Skyword Sword HD" is I believe the official title.
My comment was really more towards the people asking "why SS"? Being a 1 console game seemed like reason enough for me.
On the bright side, it's a Wii port, not a Wii U port. Yesterday got Switch a 3DS port in Miitopia. Leaving me very confused if I should be regretting my Wii U or my Switch purchase more? 🤷♂️ (partly joking)
@rjejr I totally agree. Technically, Skyward Sword was released for the Wii U eShop, but I believe it was just the Wii ROM.
I am looking forward to playing this again (with improved controls).
Groose is back!
@TheMadManSFX You may be right, but it may be too early to tell. It is supposed to run at 60 fps in the HD version. Hopefully they do work on improving the graphics and other enhancements.
@Tandy255 "Groose is back!"
HD port worth it for the incoming Groose affect alone.
Groose for Smash
Untitled Groose game
Overcooked: Chef Groose Edition
@RudeAnimat0r The best 3D Zelda games are Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess (in my opinion, obviously). I agree, Nintendo is awkwardly stingy. A collection would make more sense.
This is good news. Can play it with improved controls.
@BlueOcean I mean they're doing it because they know people will buy it. They're banking on hardcore Nintendo folks, which I am not, and their potential new Zelda audience who got into BotW. It's smart business wise for them to get that $$$, it just sucks.
If people don't buy it, which I won't, they'll have to reexamine their price points for future eereleases. But that isn't going to happen.
@RudeAnimat0r Exactly, people will bite and they will do it again. This is just a higher resolution/higher frame rate port at full price. The funny thing is how they are comparing it to Breath of the Wild and telling players to buy this as well. Nintendo is like your average door-to-door salesman!
SKYWARD SWORD 60 DOLLARS, REALLY? Sorry, Nintendo, I'm done with this overpriced games, going full pirate mode.
@kreko funny how you edited most of your comments btw.
