Though the Nintendo Switch is my most-played system, I have a confession, dear readers. I also play a fair bit on the Xbox Series X, which I somehow pre-ordered in the distant time of 2020, and it actually arrived. Sure enough the devil is banging on the door demanding payment of my soul, but I'll just keep playing games and ignore the noise.
Over on sister site Pure Xbox I'm welcomed with open arms for a round of Halo (or something), though when I say hello to the Push Square folk they give me the cold shoulder. I'm joking of course — we're all one happy family — but I have 'changed teams' as it were, having had a PS3 and PS4 to accompany my Nintendo hardware in past generations.
There were two main reasons I switched to Microsoft's console. One was the fact I realised I hadn't truly enjoyed a Sony console exclusive since Death Stranding, and it had basically become an MLB The Show machine. I'm addicted to real baseball and re-enacting it in Sony San Diego's series, so I considered the two-year-old confirmation it was going multi-platform and took a punt that 'next-gen' machines would be where MLB insisted it become a reality. Fortunately I was right, but was then gobsmacked when MLB — which clearly has the full contractual publishing control on Xbox — made Sony look foolish and came to a deal to put it on Game Pass. That is still a real oddity, and I can only assume Sony sleep-walked into a dodgy contract and had no control over that happening.
But that takes me neatly to reason two for swapping sides: Xbox Game Pass. If I was losing interest in PlayStation-exclusive games, it was frankly the economically sensible choice for me to switch to Xbox. I also like Phil Spencer's general attitude to gaming, and he's executed an extraordinary turnaround from the hubris of his predecessors. Game Pass is almost too good to be true, and eventually it will no doubt creep up a dollar every six months in price, Netflix-style. But heck, I'll take advantage while the going's good, and when you throw in various ways to 'game' the subscription service, and even use Microsoft Reward points to redeem free months, it's an absolute no-brainer.
Game Pass currently out-strips its rivals because it consistently offers completely new games, including all major first-party titles (which will be a bigger deal in future than right now, admittedly), along with the usual mix of attractive older titles. It's also big on Indie games, and I love playing a range of Indie games even if my bank balance makes me pick and choose in normal circumstances. You don't 'own' the games, no, but there's nothing stopping you finding a game via the service and then buying it anyway as an extra show of support. And frankly, how much we 'own' download purchases has been debatable since the Wii days if you actually read the terms of service — best not to dwell on that too much.
In the publishing world I also saw first-hand how valuable it is to smaller companies to get 'picked' for Game Pass; it's definitely becoming a real target for publishers and developers seeking financial stability and comfort. That's the key point; a lot of detractors of the model argue it damages Indies, but those on the service politely point out they're pretty happy as they get paid well and it sometimes boosts sales on other platforms, while Xbox argues that Game Pass subscribers actually spend more on game purchases. I can speak from experience that visibility is hugely important for smaller games, and though Nintendo has laudable initiatives like Indie World, the eShop itself is not well designed from a UI viewpoint. Sony's store has similar issues. Whereas the visibility of being on Game Pass can only be a positive as it is a curated service.
I've been reading lots of perspectives from publishers and developers on Game Pass, on these pages and in excellent recent articles like this one on Eurogamer, and can see how the economics do actually stack up. As a sample, I've played the likes of Narita Boy, The Gardens Between, Spiritfarer, Cyber Shadow, The Touryst and more through Game Pass, all games I would have otherwise bought, or considered buying, on Switch. Sometimes I feel guilty that I haven't given these developers a sale — again, I have a limit on what I can spend on games — but then remember the evidence that, actually, those companies will be doing just fine.
Interestingly, I've probably found myself taking a portion of the money I'd otherwise spend on new download games and throwing it at older titles on my faithful old Switch. That'll be part of the argument that some with a subscription service still spend similar amounts of money on games, but they're just playing more games as a consequence. I've been enjoying grabbing various eShop titles that had been sitting on my wishlist, longingly asking for me to take the plunge.
It's also interesting that while many people wring their hands over whether Sony will 'retaliate' with a similar service (beyond PS Now), I don't see many asking that about Nintendo. Should we be? I'm not sure — for one thing, Nintendo operates in its own bubble within the gaming industry and is currently riding high and selling ridiculous numbers of systems. There's little incentive for the company to change its approach, at least at this stage. That's not to say this won't alter in the coming years, but right now it'll likely coast along with Nintendo Switch Online in its current form, albeit with occasional additions (yes, I know, everyone wants more retro system libraries included).
The eShop is also rocking along quite well in terms of revenue, even if the majority of the 30+ games released every week will struggle mightily. In its most recent quarterly earnings Nintendo stated its download revenues were "256.0 billion yen (an increase of 104.9% year-on-year)", which is roughly $2.35 billion. Even accounting for the fact that download sales through 2020 will be artificially inflated due to world events, that's still a big ol' number.
So, right now, Nintendo will likely happily continue with its download business norm, though it's no doubt closely monitoring trends and data. Microsoft, meanwhile, is ruffling feathers and — potentially — showing that a subscription service is a sensible thing for a major corporation in the gaming space to support. Time will tell but these are interesting, and indeed turbulent, times in the world of download games.
Let us know in the polls and comments what you think of Game Pass, and whether you think Nintendo will eventually adopt a similar approach.

I think the utility of the switch helps e shop sales. I’ll buy games twice sometimes just to play on the go.
Either way, the game pass idea is quite a phenomenal Idea it took off well. I hope Microsoft does some sort of collaboration with Nintendo in that regard.
@Strictlystyles yep, I do the same, if I liked a game on PC or on Xbox I usually buy It also on my Switch (more often when it's on sale of course!)
Gamepass is going to become ugly one day. And by then, no one will know any different.
Who cares if it affects the eShop (or any other platform)? If it's good for gamers then that's all that matters.
I play a lot of games on my PC I would have played on Switch otherwise. And it worked out waiting for Octopath!
I use game pass as a demo station. If I like the game I buy on Switch.
Great article. Great points and very much along the lines of what I have been thinking recently.
I think I might find a GamePass style service overwhelming and wouldn't complete as many games. Or I'd feel a pressure to play certain games before they're taken down.
I'm happy to buy games individually but do wish more games had demos available so we can properly check if they're right for us.
@Kevember what's good for gamers (or even Microsoft) may not be always good for devolopers, especially indie developers.
I also double if i want to play it on the go.
I never like Game Pass.
I don't even want to see Game Pass on Switch.
XBOX Series X/S are literally have NO interesting games for me as their library games are exactly 99+% same with PS4 / PS5 + XBOX ONE / Series cannot even play DDR Ultramix series, DDR UNIVERSE series, Kinect XBOX 360 games so i don't even need XBOX Series machine.
I have a XSX (and an XBX before that) and I have been using GPU since the beginning. I recently bought a Switch Lite as a secondary portable console to play Nintendo exclusives or consoles exclusives (such as Hades). Also, Mario Tennis is the best arcade tennis games of the last few years (not that it had much competition; there are no good tennis games for PS4/5 or Xbox). Obviously, I won´t buy big AAA multiplat games for Switch.
"I'll play it on Game Pass."
Half the people I know who says this doesn't. Unless something huge and hype covers a particular indie, people default to what is familiar and play that instead.
Literally many F2P games get the blunt end for this too. Can't hurt to try a game that is new, but often times 80% or more that I tell don't bother with it til it hits it big.
I'm happy with the current situation on the Switch but wouldn't mind a Gamepass type idea. I am really not interested in an XBOX console as I financially couldn't justify it. Same with PC gaming as well.
I’m a Nintendo only gamer and have been for a while so I’m honestly ignorant concerning GamePass and services like that.
I'm considering trying out Game Pass on PC, but I honestly have so many backlogged games, and play through so many new games, that I just don't know how much I'd benefit from a Game Pass sub.
tbh I kinda prefer the approach of Xbox Live Gold and PS Plus where you can add the games if you're subbed and then play them whenever. It's the main reason I stay subbed to PS+. Whereas, with Game Pass, you NEED to play those games when they're active.
Once I work through my backlog, though, I'll heavily consider looking into Game Pass for my next gen gaming purposes, depending on how well Microsoft has padded the service with permanent first-party additions.
Gamepass has been a great way to play with my pc friends. Many of them were my halo buddies back in the day and now we’re kickin it like it’s 2007 😆 It has been well worth the price for me and I’d welcome gamepass in some form on the switch with open arms.
When Xbox gets some worthwhile exclusives then I will give the Series X a look. That seems to be a while off still.
Gamepass I have no interest in as I have enough of a backlog as is without actually subscribing to a whole new one.
"Nintendo operates in its own bubble within the gaming industry and is currently riding high and selling ridiculous numbers of systems. There's little incentive for the company to change its approach, at least at this stage."
And this is why Nintendo has never and will continue to never enjoy sustained success. For every Wii they will have a Wii U.
I’m trialing Apple Arcade. And it does encourage me to try games that I wouldn’t have otherwise paid for.
@Clyde_Radcliffe I have my own Gamepass in a backlog. I have mixed emotions about this bc I had PSPlus for my Vita. I have tons of games, but never played most of them. That said, Gamepass does look too good to not eventually try for at least a while.
@DavidMac I really like what they are doing with Apple Arcade and hope they continue.
@Strictlystyles I usually buy on the Switch first, and if it's a game that I like and is more demanding on the hardware, I end up getting it on PS4 as well so I can have a portable version and a prettier looking at home version.
Game Pass is the only reason I've played Octopath. Always saw it on switch but never could bring myself to make the purchase. Now I enjoy it on the big screen on the series X.
@GrailUK wait until all the free months run out and games start leaving the service. Then everyone is spending 30 dollars a month for a service that’s giving you limited time run gaming(third party of course)
Surprise game pass is pushed by astroturfers!
@The_New_Butler Nooo, you have me all wrong. I'm talking on an industry scale. Remember how cool Netflix was (and cheap) when it first started. Then they started making their own stuff. Then Disney removed all their content and made their own. Come on. Why on Earth do you think Microsoft is buying everyone? So they have Gamepass Originals or whatever they will call it. All the big AAA companies will probably break off and form their own (I mean lord, having the rights to sports titles is huge for EA!) But, subscription services are a long way off from being established, so everyone is happy to ride the Microsoft train. They have the money to do it (money that's not even from the gaming sector lmao!). Once it is established and competition becomes rife, then what was one subscription service becomes 3 or 4. And noone owns anything. Etc etc. Enjoy it while it lasts, because much like Youtube and everything else that was too good to be true, Microsoft will eventually have to start appeasing shareholders with year on year growth (and lord knows most western companies don't do that buy growing user base or making something unique.) More like ingame purchases etc. Games as a service. Cynical? Yeah, probably. But I'm not buying into it. We lose any ownership of our hobby.
But the best thing is, the more and more companies drool at the profits from this business strategy, the more room there is for Nintendo to do something different. Which is why it's so important for them. Nintendo will more than likely have to follow the industry to some extent (else they get swallowed up), but I'm happy they lag behind this area and lead the way with game design.
@rockodoodle I tried it before and was only somewhat impressed. But they’ve got some new great games like FANTASIAN by the guy behind the early Final Fantasy games. And I’m loving it. Also Grindstone is so addictive.
It’s not a concept that interests me as I have limited time to game and just want to play what I’m interested in. Seems like a great concept for people to be able to play a large variety of games for a low cost but just not for me.
Not for me personally, the advantage of playing it on my favorite system and in bed at that far outweighs the performance advantages and "free" price of it being on game pass.
Gamepass is good to give exposure to lesser known IPs like Yakuza that otherwise people wouldn't pay full price for. If it has any impact on Switch sales I think that could only be true if the user has both consoles, which apparently is way less common than people that own both Sony and Nintendo systems. Then again Xbox has very little going for it that opting for a pc is a much better investment. Long story short, Gamepass is where publishers go for the mass exposure but not for the sales and are fine with it as long as they can make bank on the other two consoles plus pc
I buy far fewer games because of Game Pass- it's been an amazing deal.
I just like owning physical media. Switch feels like it might be the last console that does it. Also it's really fun collecting for the Switch. I like seeing how awesome the covers are for the games. Also a lot of them have become very collectable and rare which makes the hunt for them a fun hobby. Lastly, I just like the aesthetic of Switch games. Their size and shelf space seems just perfect for me. Taller than 3ds games and skinnier than psp. Vita cart boxes were also very neat and compact, but I just like the Switch carts more.
I have game pass. I barely use it. A lot of games I opt for on Switch for portability. I do prefer the F2P games on Xbox like Apex Legends but those do not require game pass. The idea of Game Pass is cool but I also like owning things.
I only recently learned one does not have to have an Xbox in order to get Game Pass, and that intrigues me since I don't like their systems. That alone makes me want to subscribe, though it won't likely affect my Switch purchases since Switch is still the only way to play games on TV and/or on handheld with one device.
Had it, in the end i haven't played really something till the end, so i quit it
@Clyde_Radcliffe Me too. It would be too much for me. It is for this reason I do not have Netflix etc. TOO much choice. Great for people that like that, and I can see why it is a bargain, but my Autism means that I really do not like much choice! I never have more than 3 games MAX that I would be playing. Mostly, I like to stick with one till I have nearly exhausted it.
I tend to subscribe to the GamePass on PC every now and then since you can cancel it on a monthly basis which is very nice. The value of the GamePass is undeniable and if I were playing exclusively on PC or Xbox I'd probably never unsubscribe from it. I do however prefer gaming on my Switch over my other devices so I tend to buy games on it even if I could play them cheaper via the GamePass on PC. GamePass coming to the Switch would of course be a dream come true
Nintendo is very reserved with how they run their servers. The DS and Wii were the first of the 7th generation to have their servers fully shut down, and they didn't hesitate to shut down stuff on the 3DS and Wii U as well. Not sure if a subscription-based service would be worth it if Nintendo always jumps to shutting their stuff down first.
I'm a PS4 and Switch owner. Game Pass is becoming increasingly tempting, as Microsoft bought a large number of studios I like: Bethesda, Obsidian, inXile, Ninja Theory, and Double Fine, if I remember correctly. However, with a bunch of physical PS4 games and the fact I still enjoy several Sony series, I can't imagine getting an Xbox over a PS5. I may seriously consider Game Pass for PC, but the real question will be whether I have the time to make it worthwhile. Maybe I will just end up buying PC games again, assuming my machine can run 'em.
There are games I’d rather play on Switch, even if they’re on Game Pass. CrossCode, for example. Then there are games I would have considered for Switch, but didn’t buy them because they were on Game Pass - like Carrion.
It’s a win, either way.
I don't think a "Nintendo Game Pass" makes sense (from Nintendo's point of view). Nintendo sells pretty well it's games and to match the numbers the service would be very expensive or have a insane number of subscribers. But "a game pass" makes sense. I'd love MS gamepass on the switch and subscribe in a heartbeat. When a game is available, my preference is PC gamepass, then steam/GOG/Epic/etc, then Switch (basically I only purchase exclusives/firstparties), but some criteria would make me pick the switch version: Controls (like RE Revelations) or PC cross save (like The Witcher 3 and Fenyx)
As game prices continuously rise and the market saturates more and more people only have a finite amount of money to spend on entertainment so they will go for the biggest bang.
If its on gamepass absolutely I am ditching switch. I mean some games already can be played via Cloud and 5G cell is becoming increasingly common in my area.
Nintendo is stuck in the stone ages in a lot of aspects of gaming lol so I doubt this will come to Switch - they barely give us all of their own legacy games through NSO
I prefer actually having a game physically in the first place, but when not possible, I have far lower prices set I'm willing to pay. Still, I want to play handheld anyway, so Game Pass on Switch, yes, maybe; but on a non-portable system? No.
I got the subscription that gives NES and SNES games and online play. But a gamepass for more game... sure, why not.
I'd say most people are more likely to just add games they don't want to play right away to their wish list and get them on eShop once a sale is going. Who can say if and when a game appears on game pass, not to mention when it might suddenly dissappear again if you didn't have time to play it while it was "on" .
anyone that slags of gamepass need wise up. ill try game play games that i would never entertain. and actually bought a few of them to keep. switch online never played any of the games free on it. not one.
I want to own my games. No thanks.
I don't like these trends towards making everything a subscription service.
@Mana_Knight Haha, I have Autism too and play games in exactly the same way! I do have Netflix but stick strictly to one series at a time (currently Superstore 😃)
With what you said about milking one game to death, do you also find you'll milk each level to death in games before moving on to the next? Like in 3D Mario games and stuff where there's loads of tasks. I'll always do as much as I can in each level before moving forward instead of loads of back and forth or mix and match.
Series X owner here. It has affected the way I spend money on indies tbh, gamepass just has a lot of the ones i'm interested in. If I like it enough and it's going to leave the service soon then i'll buy it while it has that gamepass discount towards the end. Works out well.
I know gamepass has a lot to do with why I don't buy that many indies, for a lot of the questionable games I won't even bother buying them because I'll check them out on Gamepass. That said I have actually bought some games on my Switch because I was impressed by them on Gamepass and wanted to have them on go, Descenders, Lonely Mountains Downhill, and Streets of Rage 4 are games I later bought on Switch.
@eatdogs I think Nintendo will stick with its business model for quite a while.
As incredible as Gamepass is, been subscribed for years, it's very harmful to the industry. Microsoft is losing hundreds of millions if not billions a year with Gamepass and it's unsustainable for any other company than Microsoft who have hundreds of billions coming in from their other platforms and their government and military contracts. Sony and Nintendo can never compete with that business model and it's harms them from the eyes of spoiled consumers who are wondering why they aren't getting free* stuff like Xbox is.
I once questioned how companies made money off Game Pass. A small subscription fee, compared to a 50 to 60 dollar game. How is it possible? I remember somebody telling me, one of the reasons is Microsoft’s deep pockets. So, do they really just throwing money at developers? I don’t see Nintendo having to follow Microsoft. Their brand isn’t a world renowned. If Sony comes up with something and it’s a success, I think that’s when Nintendo should take notice. But it’ll probably be too late. Unless they come up with something for their next system.
I have Game Pass for PC pretty much only for Microsoft first-party stuff and indies. Everything else I buy to own on PS4 or Switch for the portable aspect.
I have Gamepass Ultimate because it cost me £1 for about 2 years worth but I doubt I'll subscribe at full price. Its made no difference to what games I buy on Switch, mainly because most of the games I want to play aren't even on Gamepass and secondly they wouldn't be portable anyway.
I'd much rather own my games and not have to concern myself with if they're still on the service for me to carry on playing them
I have an Apple Arcade subscription. I’ve probably spent more on it than I would have on the individual games I’ve given serious time to if I had bought them on Switch. Still, if it’s on Arcade, that’s a lost sale for those developers on Switch from me.
I don't see how it would affect it. It's literally a different system than Xbox or pc. I could play Skyrim on pc with mods but I've put almost 80 hours into a vanilla switch playthrough. Any time I can play my switch I will. So I do believe it's about the person rather than the enticement of the offer of gamepass.
Switch software sales are at the highest ever for any Nintendo platform, and that's without accounting for its massive library of digital-only games, so "I'll play it on Game Pass instead" is not actually a particularly common sentiment among the public.
@ThomasBW84 Good article TW, but I wish you would have gone another couple of paragraphs to address this from the headline: "...But Does That Affect Switch eShop?"
What happens if Xbox Gamepass comes to Switch? I know it's a long shot, but it does come up every now and then. I don't think Switch can run some of those games natively, but it should be able to via xCloud. Would indie game sales on the eShop suffer if people could play them on their Switch via streaming? Could have been another question in the poll - Would you pay $10 per month to stream Xbox Gamepass games on Switch?"
https://www.windowscentral.com/xbox-cloud-games-list
@The_New_Butler Yeah, I'm under no illusion what their business model is. They worked out the average attach rate and found away of getting those people to spend more. Honestly if you play a couple of games, subscriptions really lose their value rather rapidly. And it's hard for us who play more than most to appreciate just how low the aveage attach rate is. When you see 8-10 games, I just look at my shelves lol.
Hey, I'm not trying to disuade you from Gamepass. I let folk do what they want, I was just trying to say why I'm not a fan.
I dare say Gamepass could come to Switch in some form (mostly MS exclusive stuff). And I would be lying if I wouldn't be tempted. But that scenario is more a case of no harm no foul, as I don't have an XBox.
Do you stream? (Genuine question.)
Great article and a good read. Personally I’m not sure there’s much effect on the Switch. Game Pass isn’t for everyone and the Portability of the Switch puts it in quite a different place anyway (streaming isn’t quite the same and is also limited in terms of devices and game selection at the minute).
Can't play gamepass games handheld(easily). That said, if i had gamepass, i would most certainly defer to that for certain titles
There does seem to be some real understanding about GP though.
None of the games on it are Game Pass exclusive, they can all be bought separately.
MS say it’s self sustaining and given they’d passed 18 million subscribers at the last count that’s highly plausible. Even if all those subscribers are gaming the system and only paying £50 a year (likely a very conservative estimate) that’s £900 million a year just from GP. Add in the reported positive effects on game and DLC sales and it’s a very solid business model.
From a Consumer POV of course, it’s an absolute bargain. That may change in the future but that isn’t now.
you could include Apple Arcane in this list
I've never heard anyone say that and I don't actually know anyone using Game Pass. Or, at least, I don't know if anyone I know use Game Pass.
I was thinking about this topic a few weeks back. Here’s what I’ve noticed about my own purchasing/playing habits. I have both a Switch and an Xbox Series X with Game Pass Ultimate right now. I’ve had Game Pass for almost two years now and it has caused me to buy less games on my Xbox.I haven’t bought an Xbox game since Star Wars Squadrons (which is now on GP Ultimate thanks to EA Play) and I don’t even remember the last game I bought before that. However, it has become the perfect test bed for cross-platform games. For me portability is king over all, so I’d rather play just about anything on Switch, unless the performance difference is just that bad. So, I probably buy less games on Switch now too, but only because I typically get to try them first on Game Pass. If I really enjoy something enough, I’ll stop playing it on Xbox, buy it on Switch, and continue there.
One thing I’m interested to see is when Xbox Series controller support comes to iOS in the next update, if I’ll keep this pattern up or just stream my Xbox to my phone and continue playing “portably” that way.
I just did a quick check on the games that I played on gamepass in the passed 6 months that are also available on the Nintendo eshop.
The prices are the normal prices on the eshop.
The Messenger €19.99
The Touryst €19.99
The Outer Worlds €59.99
Narita Boy €24.99
Superhot €22.99
Donut County €11.99
The Gardens Between €19.99
That is a total €179.93, even if you would keep sales in mind, that is a pretty sum that already covers more than a year worth of gamepass subsribtion. And these are not even all the games I've played, just the ones that are available on both.
"I'll play it on game pass" has truly saved me a lot of money.
The Eurogamer article linked above is excellent, for those who missed it.
https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2021-02-17-is-xbox-game-pass-too-good-to-be-true
Wow, now we're getting GamePass articles on NintendoLife?
@Strictlystyles I’ve done this a bunch! Just bought a second copy of Valkyria Chronicles 4 on Switch just because I’m infinitely more likely to play through it in the near future on a handheld than my PS4/PS5.
Every time i see Pocket Rumble in that article pic I'm like, "Just put it on sale already!" Heck, actual NEOGEO Pocket games are available on the eShop now, you need to compete!
I love gamepass but i also buy a lot of switch games
Gamepass is awesome and gamepass on Switch would be amazing! My series S is my gamepass machine! I can't tell you the last time I bought a game for Xbox...oh wait. When did Tony Hawk come out? But that does free up funds to buy more games for the Switch. My Switch library has certainly grown since I only buy games for my Switch. I should also mention that I have a PS5...but it's just been collecting dust.
I love my Switch, but it collected dust for months once I picked up GamePass. I'm playing my Switch again now, but I am hesitant to buy many games. The Switch has been leaning too hard on remasters like BioShock that are then available on GamePass. Indie games are low cost and worth picking up, but the mid to high-tier games are not as appealing anymore.
I would probably reduce my spending if gamepass was available. I already have started taking advantage of the fact that Apple Arcade to play some titles I would not otherwise purchase. The number of must own games has been decreasing this generation for me.
As long as all games were still available yo be purchased outright both digitally & physically, I see absolutely no reason a “Nintendo GamePass” would be a bad thing.
Last few years I've been a Nintendo and PlayStation gamer but the Mrs surprised me with a Series S as its small enough to take to work and I'm a gamepass convert. I have just grabbed the Memory Expansion and I'm currently downloading every Halo game to play through again as I haven't had an xbox since the OG Xb1.
Since signing up for gamepass I've gone from buying 2-3 games a week on Switch to pretty much none - the only switch game I've picked up since having the Xbox is MHRise. It probably doesn't help that I grabbed Razor Kishi so Xcloud also gives me the benefits of portable play for games like Outer Wilds without the Switches downgrades.
I also play Xbox. It does make an excellent YouTube machine.
Glad you wrote this article, Gamepass is an amazing offering and has really let me try games I wouldn't otherwise be able to afford or that I've been nervous to purchase. Some might be because the games take up a ton of memory on my microSD (400GB & 200GB) & the other is that they will not run very well on the Switch. Portability is a good selling point for a while, but I own some 80+ games on Switch so pretty sure I have thousands of hours of content on there. But also, I have spent a TON of money the last 4 years on both great games but also games I regret spending the full amount of cash on. I really love Gamepass and have been playing a ton of indie games, AAA titles and some other games that have flown under the radar. It's not to say I won't keep playing my Switch, I just think as a gamer that every gamer would be able to benefit from services like Gamepass Ultimate. Best of both worlds.
@Whitestrider Yeah, and If it’s bad for developers, that will affect gamers. The quality of music has declined tremendously since YouTube and Itunes came about... Games take much more work to develop so I can’t imagine how much it will affect gaming.
@Ryu_Niiyama funny, that’s how I use Spotify. If I like what I test out on there, I’ll go buy it on iTunes or Bandcamp.
As there’s little overlap between Nintendo and Xbox libraries, it’s no biggie for me personally. I think it’s fine for MS to disrupt the market with Gamepass. At the moment it won’t stop me from buying games for my Switch or PS5 (or Xbox where something isn’t on Gamepass). It’s a healthy commercial challenge either way, so let the games begin
I am interested to see what the hint was that Nintendo and Xbox have coming this Fall/Winter. That said, part of me wishes they would put game pass on Switch just so I could stop hearing about it or reading about it on every dam site I go to.
@Whitestrider what's good for gamers (or even Microsoft) may not be always good for devolopers, especially indie developers.
Consumers should think about consumers, let developers think about developers. Are you a developer?
@roboshort The quality of music has declined tremendously since YouTube and Itunes came about.
You are blaming YouTube and iTunes for the decline of quality in music?
Let me explain something. Consumers used to be forced to buy an entire album to get a single song that they like. Napster changed all that and there was no putting the brown stuff back in the horse. iTunes got people to BUY songs instead of stealing them. Napster and iTunes just proved that consumers weren't happy with the business model of the music industry and they jumped on a better alternative.

I hate Netflix now but still have not canceled my subscription. I will not sign up for GamePass. I think it is ultimately bad for gamers.
"I'll play it on Gamepass" doesn't really matter, if Outriders sales are considering. If people want to play it, they'll pay for it.
As for Nintendo Gamepass it depends. If it's a half assed service like Nintendo Online (which it likely would be) then no.
Depends on sales. Sometimes I double dip, buying on switch then elsewhere or elsewhere then switch. But, like others have stated, that portability option does a lot. Ex., I bought the witcher 3 on xbo, put in 12hrs. Then I got the switcher 3, I've put in a good 40+. Portability helps immensely in deciding what I buy.
I'll be honest, since getting a Series X I've played it more than my Switch, but mostly because it's hooked up to the HDMI switch for my WFH workstation. Also there's a couple titles on Game Pass (that I was planning on picking up on Switch) that I played through - Narita Boy, Genesis Noir - in addition to falling headfirst into Forza Horizon 4.
That said, I still bring my Switch with me everywhere, and play it during breaks if I'm out. I would say my Switch game spend has decreased slightly, but not my overall. I recently picked up RE2 Remake, and a couple other big games from last-gen I missed on XbOne, to make up the difference.
I never in my life thought I’d own an Xbox console. They won me with the One X and they’ve already got a Series X sale with my name on it, sometime, when stock is normal in 2022. I had gamepass. I did not enjoy the process of downloading massive files to a hard disk and then deleting them to make space. I did indeed buy the games I took a chance on and liked. I was combing through the current stable and was pretty impressed. They’ve got a lot of games I already own and really like. I’m not into renting so much. I want to be able to have a year in between playing something if need be. It’s not for me, but it’s so enticing if it’s your thing. Currently, there’s a lot of games on gamepass I’d rather play with an 8bitdo pad. I could see people trying in gamepass and then buying on Switch over controllers or the ability to play portably. Generally, however, the point is pretty mute. Publishers/Developers get compensated by Gamepass and I want to believe a lot of customers are playing games they had no intention of buying/trying out.
I don't care about GamePass for the same reason I don't care about Netflix or Spotify or any other subscription services: I buy the few things I enjoy in a medium that allows me to actually own the product so that a company can't arbitrarily decide in the future that I can no longer access it.
Well, that's not entirely true as I do have a substantial Steam library, but that's because it's pretty much impossible to buy games on physical media for PC these days, and, yes, I'm fully aware that the majority of my PC gaming library is not "future proofed", and that does bother me a little, but I figure if Valve ever pulls the plug, there will be other ways to acquire the games I wish to play again.
The other day I saw the game Rain on Your Parade and it looked interesting. I was thinking about buying it for Switch, but then I saw that it launched on Gamepass so I downloaded it on Xbox instead. I usually download indies on my Xbox now due to gamepass.
Should Nintendo have a subscription service for Switch? Sure.
Microsoft's? Hail no.
@Johnnel Another win for Microsoft.
I had a look at Gamepass at Xmas on my nephew's Series X (great machine btw)...he said download whatever you want. Had a look through and I really struggled to find anything I wanted to play. In the end I downloaded Streets of Rage 4 and made him download Metal Gear Rising as it's a Platinum game. He's mainly downloaded Dreamcast games. I think I'm one of those people that if someone gave me an Xbox I just wouldn't know what to do with it. I think being a Mac person since the 80s also means I can't see myself giving Microsoft my money.
@Crono1973 Because of what you said, the mainstream music industry shifted almost completely to crappy, overproduced singles after that. And music has come to be less and less rich in timbre. It also has come to have much less of an impact on society.
There have been some positives. Like now it is easy and cheap to access a wide array of music. So there is more potential to get exposed to a large variety of music.
I have PSplus. To be honest, I don't know what gamepass is called on PlayStation. What I do find is that often, with games like Doom and Control, the switch release (60usd) coincides with, or is really close to, a release of the same game for 'free' on PSplus. I don't know if Sony does this on purpose but it has happened quite a few times.
I'm really struggling to understand what this feature is trying to say. The only reason this would make sense is if everyone had a Switch and an Xbox such obviously isn't the case
Gamepass: The online digital second-hand thrift-store clearance shop.
If a game is only on PS4 (I don’t have an Xbox) I’ll play it on there. But, if I can play a game on switch, I will only play it on there. I got maybe 7 hours into a the Witcher 3 on PS4 but im over 60 on the Switch
Given the unlikelihood of picking up a next gen (current gen?) console at the moment, and the state of many PS4 (base model) ports, I thought I’d give Stadia a go and picked up Cyberpunk for £10 off with it. I’ve been really impressed, and already amassed quite a few titles through their pro sub. Which I haven’t paid for yet as I’m on a trial...
@Archius9 I'm exactly the same haha. Plus I like seeing my physical collection on my shelf increase.
I’m not gonna lie, Game Pass Ultimate has been a saviour and has saved me so much money on Games.
I saw Rain on Your Parade on eShop yesterday & it’s currently £10.71 which is a good price, but I got in on Game Pass the day before & while it would be fun to play it on the go in Handheld Mode & is supporting the developers, that £11 could go towards another game that isn’t on Xbox Game Pass.
Skyrim is another example. I get a lot of Switch Games hold their value, but even in the Sale, £25 is a lot of money to pay for a remaster of a 10 year old game that I can get for cheaper or better still, free on Xbox Game Pass.
I’m not cheap, hell, I buy a lot of full price Switch Games, but I’ll be honest, I’m not going to buy the same game again if it’s free on Game Pass.
Once physical media for games are finally phased out, just as Sony and Microsoft have wished for years to kill the second-hand market, and subscription services for games are the norm, I will probably quit video games altogether.
@Clyde_Radcliffe Yes! I do that too. I like to try and go back to a level and do all that needs to be done or found there, or near enough, before going onto the next.
@Crono1973
Consumers should think about indie developers too, if they want more games from those developers, of course.
"I'll play it on GamePass" only works for AAA titles IMO.
The general XBOX community has no interest in something like Octopath Traveller or the attention span for indies regardless of what the internet says and the form factor for the Switch facilitates both better than people think.
And here's the kicker, most non Microsoft games have a shelf life on GamePass ensuring that you're never going to have the luxury to play everything you want to for the price of a GamePass subscription.
I do wonder if you get to play more games, and spend less, how does that equate to the devs? I think the downside of subscription services is that, as the article implies, people will just wait for it to appear on there. So indie games may experience less sales.
A totally classless move from MLB. Sony makes a game of your league and the first thing you do is offer it for free to its main rival? But completely expected from the current corporate mentality in the US. GamePass will only hurt non-first party game developers and stiffle innovation in the long run but some people want f2p games right now apparently.
@Whitestrider
Except it’s Indie developers in particular who seem particularly enamoured with the Gamepad model. It takes some of the risk out of development because it creates another Avenue for Consumers to experience their game and hopefully wax lyrical about it, and another possible revenue stream. Take a lump sum from MS (which not everyone does but it’s one of the ways GP Contracts are negotiated) and development costs could be covered in one swoop.

@arsmolinarc
“ makes a game of your league and the first thing you do is offer it for free to its main rival?”
I have no idea how you’ve come to the conclusion that it was free. MS will have paid a fortune.
“GamePass will only hurt non-first party game developers and stiffle innovation in the long run”
I also have no idea how you’ve come to that conclusion either.
@Northwind
I personally suspect it’s not necessarily a case of Consumers having more disposable income rather for those with multiple systems it pulls spending from elsewhere as it builds engagement in the ecosystem and makes Xbox the first system some users Switch on.
Though this is just supposition.
@Kilamanjaro
“ Gamepass is an amazing offering and has really let me try games I wouldn't otherwise be able to afford or that I've been nervous to purchase.”
This is exactly why I like it. It’s increased the variety of games I play and the amount of time I spend gaming.
@RudeAnimat0r lol you get both.
I think at this point given the evidence it's not hurting indie developers and that they in fact they're thriving off it you'd be a complete moron to have a negative stance on gamepass. Yeah switch for life blah blah blah. It's a great deal with a lot of nice surprises.
@kingv84 Yaaaaaah, can't really justify owning every platform, especially since there is basically no point in owning an Xbox if you have a decent PC.
@Whitestrider Consumers should think about indie developers too, if they want more games from those developers, of course.
Consumers should not be beggars. Companies should try to sell their product to consumers,
@Crono1973 we are talking about developers that don't even have enough money for a decent marketing campaign!
@Whitestrider we are talking about developers that don't even have enough money for a decent marketing campaign!
Most developers started out small and grew before all this indie worship nonsense started.
@Crono1973 not all are able to grow unfortunately, even if they would deserve that.
@Whitestrider not all are able to grow unfortunately, even if they would deserve that.
That's business but consumers not thinking as consumers throws off the balance and helps to explain why the game industry is so anti-consumer today.
I don’t have an Xbox so I don’t see how this affects me.
Definitely effects my purchases. I didn’t grab a thing from that recent Bethesda sale because I can play all of those games for free (Yes, free - because I don’t pay for GamePass, I have it via GameShare).
@JayJ
Agree, I use GamePass to "demo" games and then pay to "own" the ones I really liked.
I don't like these game pass things. I had PS+ and PS Now for a few years and it mostly made me realize I don't like a lot of games, and giving me so many games it made me feel like it would be stupid to buy anything on their store, since it will probably be on the service after a while. It's like you get all these games you don't want to play for a monthly fee and there's also some great games in there, but I'd rather just find a deal and maybe wait for a sale and buy the games that I'm actually interested in. And if it's something I'm not sure I'll play for a long time, I'll just buy physical so I can sell it later if I want.
Then on PS Now at least, a lot of games you can just download which is nice, but, there's also a whole lot that you can only stream, and those games are great for a little while, until the game starts to slow down and freeze for who knows why, using a wired internet connection at 100mbs. It should be able to handle it but I think my isp is throttling my connection, so I can't imagine why it would be any better on Xbox. And Xbox, even if the streaming was top notch, I just don't have the slightest interest in their games so I wouldn't get it if they offered that for Switch.
I sideloaded the android beta app on my Sony android tv, and am quite impressed.. lot's of games i wanted to try, i can do now without downloading (my sd card is sort of full), so i played a lot of Oli and the wasps on it.. and some xbox exclusives i missed..
Was really the surprised mlb the show will be appearing on it... i got the show'19 on psn, and it didn't rerally change much from 15.. so i double i would have bought '21 on ps4, but will play some games on gamepass instead...
I'm not a big Xbox player, but I have a Game Pass subscription. It's not uncommon for me to try an indie game on Game Pass, and if I really like it, I'll go on to buy the Switch version before I put any real time into it. Very rare that I complete a Game Pass game on Xbox.
