Famitsu's Japanese chart figures are now in for the week ending 28th March, revealing that Monster Hunter Rise has had a – ahem – monstrous launch in Nintendo's home region.
The game sold a whopping 1,302,132 physical copies in its opening weekend, dominating the charts and leading the pack by a ridiculous margin. Second place went to Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, which sold another 37,166 physical copies to put its current lifetime total up to 592,683.
We haven't seen a launch in Japan like this for any game since Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which sold a staggering 1,880,626 physical copies in its first three days on sale in the country.
Here are the top ten (first numbers are this week's estimated sales, followed by total sales):
- [NSW] Monster Hunter Rise (Capcom, 03/26/21) – 1,302,132 (New)
- [NSW] Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury (Nintendo, 02/12/21) – 37,166 (592,683)
- [NSW] The Quintessential Quintuplets ∬: Summer Memories Also Come in Five (Mages., 03/25/21) – 20,374 (New)
- [NSW] Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban! (Konami, 11/19/20) – 20,179 (2,072,296)
- [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo, 04/28/17) – 13,207 (3,751,594)
- [NSW] Ring Fit Adventure (Nintendo, 10/18/19) – 12,632 (2,479,573)
- [NSW] Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Nintendo, 03/20/20) – 11,145 (6,710,861)
- [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft, 06/21/18) – 11,096 (1,872,739)
- [PS4] The Quintessential Quintuplets ∬: Summer Memories Also Come in Five (Mages., 03/25/21) – 10,378 (New)
- [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo, 12/07/18) – 10,270 (4,218,939)
The Monster Hunter launch had a huge knock-on effect in the hardware chart, too, with sales of both the Switch and Switch Lite rising significantly. The original model saw the biggest boost, which is perhaps to be expected owing to the nature of Rise's gameplay. Here are this week's figures, followed by lifetime sales in brackets:
- Switch – 190,133 (15,558,365)
- Switch Lite – 77,364 (3,526,983)
- PlayStation 5 – 51,931 (485,476)
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – 10,364 (94,735)
- PlayStation 4 – 2,174 (7,775,056)
- New 2DS LL (including 2DS) – 933 (1,160,124)
- Xbox Series S – 847 (9,373)
- Xbox Series X – 432 (30,636)
- PlayStation 4 Pro – 15 (1,575,723)
Any surprises this week? Let us know in the comments.

Just the Switch Lite sold more than every other console combined, not counting the main Switch of course. These MH sales are crazy.
I do wonder if the PC version leak dimmed sales. I have heard some say they are going to wait on monster hunter. (Meanwhile my day 1 copy is still in shrinkwrap cuz I am too busy farming)
260K Switches! In it's 5th year. Without a price drop!
Incredible!
If this Switch Pro is as good as folk say, momentum is not going to drop at all! Maybe (just maybe) PS2 LTD could be beaten?
PS5 had a good week too! I reckon everyone is going to do well this gen (whatever gen means these days)
@Ryu_Niiyama It sold 94% of shipment. If anything, either Capcom under shipped or retailers under ordered. Anyway, huge numbers, they must be pleased
@GrailUK to put things in perspective, Year 5 Switch sold as much as Years 5, 6 and 7 3DS combined.
Edit: I meant to say it's outselling 3DS so far
(1.702M x 1.744M)
Holy moly o.O just great to see a 3rd party release being able to put out those kinds of numbers. Really impressive.
I’m going to work through my own backlog a bit more first but I look forward to getting MHR a little bit further down the line myself.
@Pineapple_Mohawk That's bonkers!
This is obscene.
Yeah this was my expectation before Monster Hunter Rise release and it's not over just yet, Monster Hunter Stories 2 will come soon and Switch sales will only skyrocket even further not to mention there's the Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl remakes coming soon too with Pokemon Legends: Arceus right behind them. There's no stopping Switch in Japan this year.
Nice! Funny how there were 15 Playstation 4 Pro's sold. (...And this week Fuji Hasaki has bought a Playstation 4 Pro! Congrats to him!) Hehe
In its first week Monster Hunter sold more than one-third of what the console's top-selling game has sold in its lifespan. Can I buy stock in this game?
I had trouble getting a physical copy in Connecticut on release day, so I can only imagine how it was in Japan.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi New Pokemon Snap also comes out at the end of April. I doubt it will do as well as the other games you mentioned, but it is nice to see the Switch have a steady supply of new releases.
I'm guessing that puts it high up on the best selling third party titles on the Switch chart after just 3 days.
@Ryu_Niiyama Maybe, I'm personally definitely double-dipping when the PC version comes out!
That's an impressively high number!
In 2018 Monster Hunter: World achieved 1,350,412 physical copies sold within the first three days, setting a new record for a PS4 game released in Japan. Thats near 50k more than MH Rise on Switch that sold 1,302,132.
wait till capcom adds more monsters and other stuff in dlc form for rises going to increase the sales even more.
and that number is just going to get higher and higher. Really not shocked at all as the series is higher then ever, bring on the update later this month what gives us the endgame.
is Monster Hunter Rise is gonna be able to keep it sales momentum?or it gonna decrease after 1/2 weeks after it release?
WOW Switch in japan now have a install base of 19 milions consoles, but the PS5 is slowing ready to take Switch dominance in japan and others countries, Sony and it Partners just need to release a Monster Hunter or a game that apeal to the japanese Market, and Switch is done for.
@Giancarlothomaz its going to continue to go up especially since capcom is going to be adding more monsters, armors, and other stuff in free dlc.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi and there also the games Nintendo is gonna release to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Legend of Zelda(Legend of Skyward Sword, some sort of collection with classic 3D/2D Legend of Zelda games and Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2), maybe Bayonetta 3 this Haloween, and something to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Metroid.
Amazing numbers for an opening week! I'll be joining in on the MonHun hype before too long. Want to wrap up a couple of games first.
@eaglebob345 it actually sold more in Japan this week than PS5 & PS4 combined globally two weeks ago, according to the vgchartz
Game is selling out locally around me. I bought mine from a Walmart and the employee said that I was the 4th person to buy the game on a row.
Japan does not love Xbox
@Giancarlothomaz I think you posted on the wrong website, maybe try pushsquare
@dew12333 what Push Square(PlayStation) have to do with Monster Hunter Rise selling well? did Capcom confirmed Monster Hunter Rise is coming to PS4/PS5, beside PC in 2022?
Oh wow those are some cracking figures 😱
Switch sold almost half of PS5's lifetime sales in 1 week. I know PS5 is selling better worldwide then in Japan but still.....crazy the difference
That’s a good opener, I heard that with eshop downloads it was 1.8million for opening weekend in Japan.
And 4m globally on launch ! wow!
I’m not seeing that other multi million selling 10/10 title Balan Wonderland ?
Did it have a different release window?
@Giancarlothomaz If the Switch worldwide sales ever goes passed the Wii, PS4, and PS2 sales figures then there's no way the PS5 will ever top it even if it stays for the long run. Not only that Sony is losing money on the PS5 Digital Edition after they announced the closing of their digital stores for the PS3, PSP, and PS Vita. They shouldn't had done that, now Sony consumers are avoiding the PS5 DE.
@God_of_Nowt The hybrid nature of the Switch and the fact that you could play triple A titles on the go and at home is the sole reason for its success. We are living in a generation where graphical updates and powerful hardware doesn't matter anymore, it now comes down to the games and the offering of a platform. The fact that the Switch was this successful without relying on backwards compatibility, multimedia apps (like Netflix and Crunchyroll), and physical media like DVD movie functions is impressive. By not implementing extras, Nintendo doesn't have to pay for licensing anything onto the Switch and with no other source of entertainment app for consumers to enjoy other than YouTube and Hulu, Nintendo was able to keep their customers focus on what are the most important aspect of their platform, the games.
@Giancarlothomaz Your love of playstation and the death of nintendo hold no place on this website.
Begone you demon!!
(only joking, obviously carry on as you wish)
Time for japan to make monster hunter releases an official holiday like they used to do for DQ way back when.
Nintendomination is at hand. Nothing stops this train.
Can't wait to see what BOTW2 and Switch Pro do....😲
@JustMe I know that, I was talking about the leak. ... which is what I said.
Excellent time to launch a AAA heavy hitter!
Interesting. Obviously huge numbers, but a bit behind what World did... which I am surprised about in Japan, considering that market's love of portable play.
Bit of a good headache for Capcom. PlayStation is clearly the bigger home for Monster Hunter, but only just, and the gap between PS5 and Switch in terms of capabilities is vast. I guess it'll be a while before the next one, so maybe cross-platform between PlayStation and Switch 2 is possible.
Interesting challenge.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi i can see Switch selling up to 130 milions consoles sold, but surpassing PS2/DS that a task i think Switch is unable to archive.
@dimi 50k is kind of a tiny margin though when we're reaching the million sales? Plus it looks like Rise sold 94% of it's initial shipment meaning it sounds like some retailers/etc could have under-orderer or publishers having under-shipped since there's likely places that ran out of copies.
@dimi MHW sold a massive 0.04% more copies than MHR. At this level I would say they are near as dammit even lol.
@Giancarlothomaz But, the Switch is up YoY (again!) it might not even have peaked! And if the Switch Pro is as state of the art as the President claims, then I don't see why it won't do the same numbers again. Folk still haven't bought a Switch (and could buy the Pro instead) and day one adopters, like most here, I dare say would love an upgrade.
Mr Iwata entered Nintendo into a 20 year partnership with NVidia. I honestly think the Switch is going to go from strength to strength.
@Dringo Honestly, I wouldn’t bet that MHW had a better launch than MH Rise. I would expect digital sales for a portable platform to be much, much higher than for a home console. And, given how much higher the Switch install base is, I’d wager Rise has comfortably outsold World in launch week numbers. In Japan, anyway.
@dluxxx japan don't like Xbox since the Xbox 360, poor Microsoft, since the Xbox 360 they fail to reach the japanese Market, time to buy Capcom/Sega to see if they can apeal to the japanese Market.
@Ryu_Niiyama
Can't imagine it helped. Takes me back to 2005. Resident Evil 4 sold well enough on Gamecube but I'll always wonder what sales would've been had Capcom not ridiculously announced the PS2 version before the GC one hit shelves.
@Giancarlothomaz Where'd you get that from? Rise is only coming to Switch, and then PC in 2022.
@Gamer83 Agreed. Perfect example with the Capcom 5(cough 4). I’m a fan of Capcom, but I would hate to have them as a business partner. Granted the leak wasn’t entirely their fault but still it is nuts that if they had it on the docket, why not be upfront from the start? Why let customer perception flip flop?
@Krull I dunno. Switch digital usage is quite low due to the available space on the platform and Nintendo’s preference for digital. Obviously 4 years ago on PS4... things have changed. But even so, I don’t think we are looking at sales that are much better
@Ryu_Niiyama
It only seems like Nintendo this happens with when it comes to Capcom. Which is crazy because the two companies have done some great work together and the Nintendo-only players have always responded really well to Capcom's games, especially when effort is put into them. You'd think Capcom would lean a bit more into that partnership.
@Giancarlothomaz
I'd prefer MS (and Sony and Nintendo for that matter) not buy any other big publishers. It's bad enough it happened with Bethesda.
@Dringo It will be a few weeks before we know just how well rise did compared to world in japan. World had a big launch but didn't have much legs.
@Giancarlothomaz Yeah but you had to realize it took the PS2 twelve years to reach 155 million units sold as of March 31, 2012. Divide 155 million units by 12 years and that's only 12.92 million units sold per year for the PS2. The Nintendo Switch already did 79.87 million units sold as of December 31, 2020. Divide that by 3 years since they didn't count the 2021 numbers yet and that's 26.60 million units sold per year for Switch, that basically double the PS2 yearly numbers.
If Nintendo let Switch run wild for 3 more years and sales kept skyrocketing like it is now, it would definitely beat PS2's numbers by 2023 or sooner. Reason why Nintendo's past handhelds didn't beat PS2 was that their home consoles were holding them back as Nintendo had to flip-flop between support for both platforms but with the Switch they only had that to focus on and the numbers seems to only get better, the PS3 would had sold better had Sony never shift focus to their other platforms like the PSP, PS Vita, and PS VR. The PS4 only sold better cause they killed the PS Vita in time.
@Chowdaire It did very well post-launch. But with it not significantly exceeding Japan, and an expected lower performance in the West... I suspect the PS to be the platform of choice going forward.
But you don’t turn your back on such a huge Nintendo audience. So tricky balance
@Ghost_of_Hasashi with games like Bayonetta 3, Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2, Metroid Prime 4 and Pokémon Legend Arceus and if Nintendo keep supoting Switch until 2023/2024, maybe Switch will surpass DS/PS2(even with me thinking this hard difficult to be).
@dont_simp_for_them the historic of Capcom with Resident Evil 4, make me realize, Capcom will problaby release Monster Hunter Rise on PS4/PS5 along with the PC port of the game in 2022.
@Giancarlothomaz That's not happening lol. They said the only reason they are releasing it on PC is due to demand. In fact, they still have to develop the game for PC. You can hope, maybe you're right, but Rise is first and foremost a Switch game. And if it comes out for Playstation it would most likely release on Xbox too.
@Dringo Not tricky at all, they will continue to release handheld versions because they are also cheaper to make. MHR's break even point is significantly lower than worlds.
I pre-ordered from gamestop, paid extra for release day delivery and my copy is still sitting at their warehouse now with a delivery date of April 12th... needless to say I will never pre-order with gamestop again.
@Chowdaire Well yes. They could continue down the route of two different lines of games, and they probably will. But it would make more sense to have a game available across platforms if they can, thus avoiding the need to double invest IP-wise
@TheSwitcher Luckily I pre ordered from Amazon so I got the game on-time... BUT, my gamestop amiibo are not arriving until April 5th... yeah, gamestop sucks. Also sucks that the MH stories 2 amiibo are also exclusive through gamestop so that's gonna be frustrating.
@Dringo what happens if you remove Xbox numbers though? I know it’s not big in Japan but it must have contributed something.
@GrailUK Is the switch pro confirmed then?
@Trajan Not until Nintendo confirms it lol.
@Sky1Eagle1 Not a huge amount. To be honest, it doesn’t make a big difference if Rise did slightly better or slightly worse. The thing at the moment is that it’s close, and that’s why it’s a challenge (although a good challenge). Huge audiences on both platforms, with one likely a bit more dominant in the West for Monster Hunter (PS5).
So Capcom will want to find a way to support both.
I want to know the 15 people who bought PS4Pro. Lol.
Amazing performance Nintendo
