Re: Review: Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Switch) - Still Out Of This World

SillyG

@HammerGalladeBro : You'll be able to pick up from where you left off. Most compilation releases of this kind are no longer consolidated into a single launcher like they used to be, and if the games are downloadable separately via the eShop, it stands to reason that any physical release thereof will also spawn separate icons for the included games.

This is in contrast to 3D All Stars, where the games were not sold separately (digitally or physically), and was only ever available as a single, combined release.

Re: Review: Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Switch) - Still Out Of This World

SillyG

@Lord : No. This new edition of SMG is a separate piece of software entirely and comes with improvements not featured in the barebones 3D All Stars release (which was pretty much just a straight port of the Wii version), so, sadly, no crossover of pre-existing save data. On the flipside, this looks like a great opportunity to play the game all over again.

@HammerGalladeBro : Two separate icons. The digital versions of the game are sold separately after all, and there are plenty of physical releases that spawn separate icons for the included games.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle And The Millionaires' Conspiracy (Switch)

SillyG

There was a second Japanese release on Switch called "Deluxe Plus", so I'm unsure as to why that was excluded. My understanding is that the only difference is that it included a new dub with the anime adaptation's voices (which explains why it never left Japan). I prefer that cover to the original Japanese art, but I'm a little undecided overall.

Despite its inferiority to other games in the Layton series, I still thoroughly enjoyed this. Plays even better with the stylus though (as included with Brain Training). It's almost a wonder that it hadn't been bundled with one too!

Re: Video: SEGA Shares "First Look" At Yakuza Kiwami 3's Combat Gameplay

SillyG

I was referring to the cost of the storage required for the games themselves.

And £29 (AU$60) for nothing on a cart, plus storage costs is hardly a bargain considering that I was regularly spending AU$60 or less on proper physical releases last generation. AU$30 or under is where I just might be tempted (albeit very rarely) on a GKC, though it's still unideal, and it would need to be one hell of a game to tempt me (L.A. Noire was one of extremely few "download required" releases that I caved in on, and only because I was able to find it brand new and sealed for under AU$30).

And SF6 didn't even include the DLC flag on the cartridge itself, which makes the release even more frustrating (and secondhand customers would miss out on that content without an additional purchase either way).

Re: Video: SEGA Shares "First Look" At Yakuza Kiwami 3's Combat Gameplay

SillyG

Gotta love the sycophants chiming with "hErE coMe tEh ComPLaiNeRs".

It's amazing how people whinge and moan about those who actually care about upholding some degree of standards in an industry (and customer base) so susceptible to forfeit them to our collective detriment.

No-one's begrudging digital enthusiasts of their choices, so stop begrudging us of ours.

The Switch has been something of a haven of physical media with so many indie games and under-appreciated gems getting their time in the sun, so it's quite disheartening that Nintendo have so monumentally screwed up their handling of physical media this generation (for example, why in God's name are Switch 1 spec cartridges not being used/repurposed for smaller scale Switch 2 games?!), and enabling third parties to release crap products for virtually nothing while passing on substantial costs to the consumer isn't helping the situation.

In this particular case though, I am cautiously optimistic that LRG will pull through with proper physical releases of many of Sega's releases, but it's a pathetic reflection on Sega for not having the backbone to widely release such products themselves, especially with the Switch 2 being such a runaway success (though I suspect that continued GKC releases will only serve to jeopardise adoption of the Switch 2 in the long term).

Re: Random: KUUKIYOMI 4: Consider It's Switch 2 Edition Uses Mouse Mode In Neat Ways While Poking Fun At Nintendo

SillyG

There's a Switch 2 edition?! Glad I skipped the Switch 1 version, then!

The first three games on Switch (plus a Japan-only mobile game included as a bonus) are available as a physical release, with English support (the bonus mobile game is sadly Japanese only, but still simple enough to enjoy).

I'm kind of tempted to hold out for a physical release of this too (though I might have to wait for another instalment or two for such a release to materialise).

Such silly little games that WarioWare fans would feel right at home in.

Re: Game-Key Cards A "Sales Strategy Decision", Says Resident Evil Requiem Director

SillyG

@Friendly : I suspect that even Switch 1 cartridges are faster than Blu-ray, and Nintendo even opted for proprietary discs for the Wii U, which I presume were also faster than Blu-rays, as the entire physical Wii U library was fully playable from the discs, including massive open world games like Watch_Dogs. Only one game, Xenoblade Chronicles X, had the option to download assets directly to the console/hard drive in order to boost performance, however this required an eShop download (rather than installing the data directly from the disc itself). Still optional though!

Re: Game-Key Cards A "Sales Strategy Decision", Says Resident Evil Requiem Director

SillyG

Oh, yes. Blame load times. As if they've ever given two poops about that before. They could have allowed the game to be installed to the system via data that's already on the cartridge if saving a couple of seconds here and there was considered so disruptive to the gameplay experience.

As handheld players, we're used to accepting a few setbacks for a more flexible gaming experience, so, with respect, cut the BS. It would be a lot less insulting if they would just admit their actual motivation for releasing crappy products for maximum profit, because the standards of video game customers is so laughably low. Who could blame them for continually shifting the goalposts further and further against us? What's worse is that storing the actual games on a micro SD Express card can easily exceed AU$20 in addition to the cost of the GKC!

As long as they're raising the price of games, I have no objections as long as the game is fully on the cartridge. The problem is where prices have gone up by as much as AU$40 for a single game, and for it to ship on an empty cartridge!

Re: Review: Pac-Man World 2 Re-Pac (Switch 2) - Short, Sweet, Prettified, And Not For Everyone

SillyG

Gutted that this isn't getting a proper physical release on Switch 2. The cart's got so much room, that even if both platforms had completely different builds (as opposed to a Switch 1 compatible "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition"), they could have included both to maximise compatibility/value.

At this point, springing for a cart-complete Switch 1 release is like being stuck with a DVD-only option (with no Blu-ray release) all over again.

Re: Round Up: The Latest Previews Are In For Pokémon Legends: Z-A

SillyG

I was keen on getting the Switch 2 version and playing it on my Switch 1 ahead of buying the newer console.

But paid DLC announced before the game's release?! And no physical bundle release a la Sword/Shield and Scarlet/Violet's respective physical DLC carts?

Between this and DK Bananza getting paid DLC a mere two months after launch on top of all of the key card releases has completely putting me off even grabbing a Switch 2 any time soon. A handheld PC is looking more and more attractive by the day, and I was all in during the Wii U days.

Re: Pac-Man World 2 Re-Pac Switch And Switch 2 Performance & Resolution Detailed

SillyG

I don't understand why in the hell this even has two versions to begin with. They're both the same size and evidently would not require the higher speed of a Switch 2 cartridge, so why haven't they just baked the Switch 2 performance improvements into the Switch 1 build?! (As Nintendo have retroactively done with older Switch 1 games)

Why in God's name would there need to be a separate Switch 2 version at all?! Older Nintendo games didn't! And of the games that did get "Nintendo Switch 2 Editions", they ended up getting a bump in assets and/or content, something that a compilation of old ROMs would not need in the first place, as both versions have complete content/asset parity.

What a shame, as Namco's stupidity has made this an easy skip on both platforms (though I might still grab the Switch 1 version, but only at half price or less).

What an utter shambles this new generation of hardware/software has turned out to be.

Re: Poll: So, Will You Be Checking Out Switch Online's Virtual Boy Service?

SillyG

I would have been all over this if the games were supplied on a cartridge, but I'm not buying an expensive accessory that can only be used with rental games.

I also skipped Mario Kart Live a few years ago, because while I love the concept, I couldn't justify buying it out of principle as there was no physical copy of the game included. Free download or not, I do not want physical accessories tied to non-physical games that will eventually become inaccessible.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (20th September)

SillyG

It's Shadow Groudon Raid Weekend on Pokémon Go. We've had an ambassador-hosted event today, followed by a late afternoon Golden PokéStop Bonanza (to which I had contributed). No luck for me today, though I did snag a shiny dusk form Rockruff earlier today, which is easily a bigger flex than a shiny shadow Groudon. 🥰

I'll be hosting tomorrow's event for my local community. ☺️

Re: Anniversary: Celebrate Unova As Pokémon Black & White Turns 15

SillyG

Loved Gen V, and played the hell out of all of them back in the day (I still haven't played OmegaRuby and Sun as one version of those games was enough for me), but I really need to relive them. Driftveil City's theme is one of the best in the series (though Gen II's soundtrack is my favourite overall).

But unless they remake both the originals and the sequels, I don't want them.

I'm also almost surprised that we aren't getting a remake or even just an enhanced port of X/Y (the latter perhaps at a slightly cheaper price) ahead of Legend Z-A's release. There's a whole generation of fans who've never played the originals and those of us who'd love to experience it again.

Re: Nickelodeon Splat Pack Revives Multiple SNES Titles In One Retro Collection

SillyG

@SalvorHardin : LRG previously released a glorified ROM dump of Shantae on Game Boy Color on a Switch cart.

Nothing else. Not a collection. Just a single GBC game.

And instead of bundling it with the port of the DSiWare sequel Risky's Revenge (which released alongside it), they issued a separate cartridge for that too. Complete with individual, overpriced collector's editions.

Re: Poll: So, Will You Be Getting Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 For Switch?

SillyG

Without question. I've been yearning for this for ages. I was hoping that our Galaxy 1 saves from 3D All Stars could be transferred to this new version, but seeing as it's essentially a separate piece of software now, I doubt that will happen.

I do wonder though whether there'll be any differences between the 3D All Stars version of Galaxy 1 and this new release (other than, I guess, support for the new amiibo).

Re: Nintendo Releasing Physical 'Talking Flower' From Mario Wonder Next Spring

SillyG

As indifferent as I am to Wonder's talking flowers, some form of interactivity, voice warping, or even syncing with the game so that the toy speaks in place of the in-game flowers could have made this such a fun little accessory. Or here's an idea, you can speak to the flower and the in-game flowers, with a slightly warped voice, will say that in-game instead. So much potential for some inventive and fun shenanigans in classic Nintendo style squandered by modern corporate Nintendo's lack of imagination and ambition.

As it is, I fail to see the novelty at all.

Re: New Kirby amiibo Will Apparently Be Nintendo's "Most Expensive amiibo Ever"

SillyG

I'm just glad that they're finally doing something a little more worthwhile with amiibo (and with read/write functionality!).

I just hope that all of the pre-existing Kirby amiibo are also compatible.

I also kind of miss the game + amiibo bundles that were commonplace during the 3DS/Wii U era. Seems like a missed opportunity as such a bundle could have been a hot Christmas item (while also making the cumulative cost a little easier to bear).

Re: Virtual Boy Is Being Added To Nintendo Switch Online

SillyG

Wow... just wow... AU$130!!! That's even worse than I'd anticipated!

Charge an extra $20 and throw in the games on a cart FFS. This is absolutely obscene. How many people are actually going to buy this?!

A Virtual Boy replica plus the ability to own the games for posterity would have been a no-brainer, but this?! What a crying shame.

Re: Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection Finally Gets Switch 1 & 2 Release Date

SillyG

I'm disappointed that this appears to be platform-specific as opposed to a cross-compatible version that can be used on both the Switch and Switch 2.

While the Switch version would be playable on both, I can't resist having a complete on cart Switch 2 release. I presume that the only material difference between the two will be in the video quality/resolution of the documentary materials.

Re: Final Fantasy 7 Remake For Switch 2 Slips Into 2026, Game-Key Card Confirmed

SillyG

To simply store the game on Switch 2 would require about AU$35 worth of space! (Based on the AU$80 cost of a 256GB microSD Express card)

Surely a complete on cart release wouldn't cost anywhere near that much compared to the cost that's being passed on to the consumer as is (but this of course means that Nintendo would need to provide 128GB carts as an option for these monolithic games).
