I won’t be watching this. I know I’ll be getting the game anyway so don’t want this spoiled. New games being announced will always be more exciting than seeing more of a game I already decided to buy.
If this comes out on PS5 and Switch 2, I’m gonna be very torn. I’d want both versions eventually, but not at full price. Switch 2 version will essentially be the same game I played 7 years ago but portable, while on PS5 it should look and run like a dream.
It's definitely a noticeable step back. Pretty much every screen I use these days is OLED, even cheap Retro Handheld devices, so suddenly having a device without one really stands out.
@bandyba There's a lot of historical reasons. In the US, the gaming market was Atari, and when Atari stopped selling in the early 80s, they called it a crash. Nintendo swooped in to an empty market without competition and cleaned up.
In the UK back then, gaming was mostly done on micro computers, and the US 'crash' did not happen. This sent the US and the UK on very different trajectories, as Nintendo was number one in the US for 8-bit and 16-bit. They figured the UK market would be just as easy too, so didn't bother much with marketing. Consoles and games would come much, much later to the UK market and be ridiculously priced, as Nintendo was used to just being the number one brand. This worked very much against them since Sega were actually putting an effort in over here. It got even worse in the next-gen as Sony heavily, heavily marketed the PlayStation and hugely grew the entire market. By the time they released the Gamecube here, they already knew it was a flop from the US and Japan numbers. It was only from the Wii onwards have Nintendo treated the UK market seriously, and they've done pretty well since then.
You can’t really read anything into launch numbers, as everything sells out. Everything. People saying oh the UK hates Nintendo, but they sold out everything they shipped, just like all those other consoles. They couldn’t have sold more. It was impossible to beat the PS5 figures if they didn’t ship as many as Sony did.
I was so looking forward to this, as the only 'Switch 2' game on my new Switch 2, but with the cross-save function not working, I can't really play it, as I'm not starting over again.
With the reports of how late a lot of people got dev kits, it’s not too much of a surprise how few Switch 2 ports have been announced last week.
I’m sure they will come eventually. Not the stuff that’s clearly pushing the PS5/Xbox, but things like Persona 3 Reload and Persona 4 Revival seem like obvious choices.
I am trying to get away from the Xbox ecosystem, but I’m very interested in that. Windows handhelds are not a threat to the Switch but they are a lot of fun. It all depends on if Steam Deck 2 or whatever it ends up being called is revealed before this releases for me.
We know Nintendo loves to sell an improved model, but this is the first time I've picked up a console at launch and feel like I can see the intentionally cut corners to enable that future upgrade. Screen and battery are both big downgrades from the OLED, and I think the kick stand is worse too.
My first impressions are, I love the extra size, but the screen DOES feel like a big step back from the OLED, the battery is just flat out bad, and the kickstand seems like a downgrade too. It feels like these are almost intentional, so they can give us a new model in 2-3 years.
It's great to see games can run better without patches. Was one of the most exciting parts of the Series X launch, going back to previous gen games and seeing the huge improvements in some cases. Unfortunately from the DF footage, Arkham Knight still runs terribly on Switch 2, despite being a clear improvement. The Witcher 3 improvements are very nice though.
I get the disappointment of it being little more than a slightly enhanced port, but FF Tactics on modern hardware without having to resort to emulation gets a huge thumbs up from me.
Switch 2 update combined with cross save means this is definitely getting bought in the current sale.
I wish World of Assassination had cross save, but I've played through those games too many times now, got all the unlocks across multiple platforms and don't think I can face doing each level 100% again, but as something to dip in and out of, it would be perfect for Switch 2.
It’s a shame it’s taken so long for these games to run decently. I do fear the whole cycle will start again next year and the Switch 2 Pokemon games will need Switch 3 hardware to run properly.
I am so excited for this. I don't really care much for any of the Bond games, even Goldeneye, but the World of Assassination, heck, every Hitman game outside of Absolution is absolutely fantastic.
If they all released at the same time, I’d probably go for the PS5 version, but a Switch 2 version would definitely go on the wish list for a future sale.
I hate the industry’s obsession with remastering to the point they are now remastering a remaster. If a game is hard to play, either through just being physical and now absurdly expensive, or not possible to play on modern hardware then fair enough, but too many games get remasters that just don’t need it.
MS Games I’d very much be interested in seeing on Switch 2 are Rare Replay and Forza Horizon. I don’t know how easy RR would be though. For Xbox all those games were already available and the hardware was capable of playing all the previous generations so it was just lumping them into a collection. For the Switch, they’d need to port everything individually.
Demand plays very little part in a console’s launch numbers. Wii U and 3DS also sold out. Xbox Series X sold out. It just comes down to who can make the most for launch day.
I would be nice to have World of Assassination in portable form, but I've already played through it too many times to want to do it again. Cross-progression would be very, very welcome for this one.
In the UK, met the criteria but never got an invite. Pretty sure WAY more people meet the criteria than they have stock, so meeting the criteria just got you into the lottery. A lot of people seem to be assuming they’re good for a preorder as they meet it.
I’m kind of surprised that people are surprised. Every console sells out for launch, even things like the flop of the Wii U, the 3DS and its infamously gloomy launch, or Xbox consoles that lag way behind by the end of the generation.
As similar as the concepts are, they are really not competing at all. Anyone that wants Nintendo first party stuff is not going to be interested in a Deck, and anyone not interested in Nintendo first party stuff is probably not going to be interested in a Switch 2.
No interest in it myself, but Amazon have the full fat version for £35 which is less than half the much worried over RRP for Switch 2 games. Bravely Default is only £25, a mere 30% of the big bad number everyone was panicking over. "Nintendo don't do sales" is fair enough, but retailers don't have to sell at what Nintendo want them to sell at. As long as they can make a profit, they'll be happy.
Yes, and thank goodness. Nintendo have spent the last 20 years thinking new hardware needs some crazy gimmick, but it does not. Just put out hardware that is easy to develop for and capable, and be creative in the software space.
It’s nice to have for sure, but once again, people who do this as a hobby have created better emulation software than Nintendo and that will never stop being bonkers to me.
Sorry to delve into politics, but I wouldn't be too hopeful on the Vietnam tariffs going away. Most of the countries Trump announced crazy tariffs for either don't charge tariffs on US imports at all, or if they do, they are very small. He's upset that the US buys WAY more stuff produced in Vietnam than people in Vietnam buy from the US, but that's not going to change. So many huge US companies manufacture in Vietnam, so a huge amount of product will be shipped in that direction. Vietnam doesn't have the population or the wealth to buy the same quantity of US goods.
The good news is that it shouldn't be 46% on top of this price. They SHOULD have expected a 25-30% tariff anyway and priced that in. Nobody was expecting 46% though, so they might just add on what they need to, in order to cover the difference.
The most disappointing bit of all for me. It's been a long time since I've used a display that's not OLED, even my cheap, Chinese handheld emulation device has one.
They won't be cheaper though. Nobody sells Switch games for the RRP, other than Nintendo and their eShop. Okay, maybe Game price them at RRP too, but that's why nobody shops at Game.
This is kind of disappointing with regards to keeping our current libraries going forward. Yeah, Microsoft does this with original Xbox and 360 games on current hardware, but that's down to decisions that were made well over a decade ago at this point. Going forward, I don't see why there is any reason to think any game you buy on an Xbox or Playstation won't just be there for you on every new piece of hardware. With Nintendo, I don't really have that same confidence. They know how much money it makes them to start over and make you re-buy things again.
If Trump doesn't backtrack on his tariffs, a price hike later in the year for the US seems inevitable as these are being produced in Vietnam and he's just slapped an almost 50% tariff on goods being imported from there. They might have got a couple of million through before today, but all that stock will be gone immediately.
@PULPCAT Smyths and Very sold out, but on Amazon you can request an invite to buy. So they'll go through all the requests, probably in order they were submitted, and email links to people.
Is it though? I don’t think DS, 3DS, Wii or Wii U will ever feel right on anything but that hardware. It’s why I hated that period of forced gimmicks. Nintendo can drop GBA, N64 and GameCube files on any new hardware and it’s going to be able to play it without compromise. Not the games from the gimmick consoles though. I hope we’re done with that sort of thing forever.
Probably a 5, but I consider a 5 just an average game, rather than utterly awful like a lot of people seem to do. Not particular ambitious or imaginative, and the performance issues are pretty bad too. Both Paper Mario and Mario and Luigi peaked in their first one or two games of the series, and have been on a constantly downward slope ever since it seems.
Games made by hundreds or even thousands of people cannot be art. Most games made by single individuals are not art either, although I guess they could be. Even a company with a dozen employees has to aim to make enough money to pay those dozen employees their salaries. You can’t make art if what you’re making also HAS to make money.
People are saying Nintendo can emulate what they own and it’s not hypocrisy. That’s not the point. Based on past evidence (Nintendo selling us ROMs they themselves have downloaded from piracy sites) they will almost certainly be using an emulator someone else worked to build. Could even be an emulator they’ve tried to get shut down. But now they want to show off their old games and by doing this it shows they know this is the best way. Why didn’t they run it off a Switch? They chose to pick a community built emulator, the kind of thing they are always trying to get rid of.
Yuzu was using Nintendo assets that were leaked, so fair enough that being shut down. As far as we know this one was all legal though, but it’s essentially bullying by Nintendo assets they know individuals like this won’t have the money to fight them in a court of law.
Also all a bit ironic when it’s been shown in the past Nintendo steal hobbyist coder’s code for emulating on their own systems, again as they know individuals can’t afford to go to the courts for a case they’d absolutely win.
This is why I don't understand why such a seemingly large amount of people using this site are happy whenever an event goes by without us seeing new hardware. The Switch has been holding back Nintendo games for years at this point.
Erm... they don't refer to it as Retro? They just show young adult aged people who have nostalgic memories of playing that thing as a little kid. Which definitely fits. There are people who would have picked up a 3DS as their first gaming device at age 5, and will now be 18.
I don’t care about the obsession with ownership. My only concern with fully digital is the cost aspect, and to be honest, this is only an issue with Nintendo. At any point in the last 4 years, I could jump on Amazon and get New Horizons for £35-40. Over this time there have been frequent sales where it’s even less. Meanwhile to buy it digitally, it would have cost me a whopping 25% extra, other than a paltry 12 days, in the last 4 years where the digital price came down to match the standard price of physical.
Game Pass is staggering value. I know the Gold Upgrade trick has been downgraded slightly in the last year, but I got 6 years of GPU for less than £3 a month. Just can’t overstate the insane value that is. Over time it will inevitably go up though like the TV services have done.
On the MS ecosystem, digital feels much more future proof than physical. It is inevitable we get consoles without disc drives. Maybe not next gen, but it’s coming. My huge collection of 360 discs then become obsolete, but I’m almost certain to be able to still download and play all the 360 games I’ve bought digitally over the years. Nintendo will never do this because re-releasing old games is such a big part of theory strategy, through remasters or remakes. They don’t want to to keep access to the stuff you bought a Generation or two ago.
27 hours for me. I knew I’d not played a lot this year, but shocked it’s that low. 12 hours of Mario 3D World which was my Christmas 2022 game, 7 hours of Pokemon Scarlet, 3 hours of Pokemon Violet and 4 hours of Animal Crossing.
Geoff and these awards have always been a joke. They will never be prestigious when he makes them feel so much like advertisements (often, not even adverts for games)
