Re: Switch 2 Is Nintendo's Biggest UK Console Launch Of All Time

Peach64

@bandyba There's a lot of historical reasons. In the US, the gaming market was Atari, and when Atari stopped selling in the early 80s, they called it a crash. Nintendo swooped in to an empty market without competition and cleaned up.

In the UK back then, gaming was mostly done on micro computers, and the US 'crash' did not happen. This sent the US and the UK on very different trajectories, as Nintendo was number one in the US for 8-bit and 16-bit. They figured the UK market would be just as easy too, so didn't bother much with marketing. Consoles and games would come much, much later to the UK market and be ridiculously priced, as Nintendo was used to just being the number one brand. This worked very much against them since Sega were actually putting an effort in over here. It got even worse in the next-gen as Sony heavily, heavily marketed the PlayStation and hugely grew the entire market. By the time they released the Gamecube here, they already knew it was a flop from the US and Japan numbers. It was only from the Wii onwards have Nintendo treated the UK market seriously, and they've done pretty well since then.

You can’t really read anything into launch numbers, as everything sells out. Everything. People saying oh the UK hates Nintendo, but they sold out everything they shipped, just like all those other consoles. They couldn’t have sold more. It was impossible to beat the PS5 figures if they didn’t ship as many as Sony did.

Re: The Switch 2 Fixes Its Predecessor's "Worst Performing" Game

Peach64

It's great to see games can run better without patches. Was one of the most exciting parts of the Series X launch, going back to previous gen games and seeing the huge improvements in some cases. Unfortunately from the DF footage, Arkham Knight still runs terribly on Switch 2, despite being a clear improvement. The Witcher 3 improvements are very nice though.

Re: No Man's Sky Is Landing A Free Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Update On Launch Day

Peach64

Switch 2 update combined with cross save means this is definitely getting bought in the current sale.

I wish World of Assassination had cross save, but I've played through those games too many times now, got all the unlocks across multiple platforms and don't think I can face doing each level 100% again, but as something to dip in and out of, it would be perfect for Switch 2.

Re: Xbox's Latest Multiplatform Release Has Been Announced

Peach64

I hate the industry’s obsession with remastering to the point they are now remastering a remaster. If a game is hard to play, either through just being physical and now absurdly expensive, or not possible to play on modern hardware then fair enough, but too many games get remasters that just don’t need it.

MS Games I’d very much be interested in seeing on Switch 2 are Rare Replay and Forza Horizon. I don’t know how easy RR would be though. For Xbox all those games were already available and the hardware was capable of playing all the previous generations so it was just lumping them into a collection. For the Switch, they’d need to port everything individually.

Re: ICYMI: Street Fighter 6 Is Also Getting A 'Standard' Release On Switch 2

Peach64

No interest in it myself, but Amazon have the full fat version for £35 which is less than half the much worried over RRP for Switch 2 games. Bravely Default is only £25, a mere 30% of the big bad number everyone was panicking over. "Nintendo don't do sales" is fair enough, but retailers don't have to sell at what Nintendo want them to sell at. As long as they can make a profit, they'll be happy.

Re: Nintendo Of America President Says Tariffs "Not Factored" Into Switch 2 Price

Peach64

Sorry to delve into politics, but I wouldn't be too hopeful on the Vietnam tariffs going away. Most of the countries Trump announced crazy tariffs for either don't charge tariffs on US imports at all, or if they do, they are very small. He's upset that the US buys WAY more stuff produced in Vietnam than people in Vietnam buy from the US, but that's not going to change. So many huge US companies manufacture in Vietnam, so a huge amount of product will be shipped in that direction. Vietnam doesn't have the population or the wealth to buy the same quantity of US goods.

The good news is that it shouldn't be 46% on top of this price. They SHOULD have expected a 25-30% tariff anyway and priced that in. Nobody was expecting 46% though, so they might just add on what they need to, in order to cover the difference.

Re: The Switch 2 Will Emulate Switch Games, Because It Shares No Internal Hardware With Its Predecessor

Peach64

This is kind of disappointing with regards to keeping our current libraries going forward. Yeah, Microsoft does this with original Xbox and 360 games on current hardware, but that's down to decisions that were made well over a decade ago at this point. Going forward, I don't see why there is any reason to think any game you buy on an Xbox or Playstation won't just be there for you on every new piece of hardware. With Nintendo, I don't really have that same confidence. They know how much money it makes them to start over and make you re-buy things again.

Re: Nintendo Switch 2 Priced At $449.99 For The Base Console

Peach64

If Trump doesn't backtrack on his tariffs, a price hike later in the year for the US seems inevitable as these are being produced in Vietnam and he's just slapped an almost 50% tariff on goods being imported from there. They might have got a couple of million through before today, but all that stock will be gone immediately.

Re: Talking Point: The 3DS Library Is Ripe For Switch 2, But Is NSO The Way To Go?

Peach64

Is it though? I don’t think DS, 3DS, Wii or Wii U will ever feel right on anything but that hardware. It’s why I hated that period of forced gimmicks. Nintendo can drop GBA, N64 and GameCube files on any new hardware and it’s going to be able to play it without compromise. Not the games from the gimmick consoles though. I hope we’re done with that sort of thing forever.

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Mario & Luigi: Brothership?

Peach64

Probably a 5, but I consider a 5 just an average game, rather than utterly awful like a lot of people seem to do. Not particular ambitious or imaginative, and the performance issues are pretty bad too. Both Paper Mario and Mario and Luigi peaked in their first one or two games of the series, and have been on a constantly downward slope ever since it seems.

Re: Random: Nintendo's Museum Might Be Emulating SNES Games On Windows PC

Peach64

People are saying Nintendo can emulate what they own and it’s not hypocrisy. That’s not the point. Based on past evidence (Nintendo selling us ROMs they themselves have downloaded from piracy sites) they will almost certainly be using an emulator someone else worked to build. Could even be an emulator they’ve tried to get shut down. But now they want to show off their old games and by doing this it shows they know this is the best way. Why didn’t they run it off a Switch? They chose to pick a community built emulator, the kind of thing they are always trying to get rid of.

Re: Nintendo Slays Switch Emulator Ryujinx

Peach64

Yuzu was using Nintendo assets that were leaked, so fair enough that being shut down. As far as we know this one was all legal though, but it’s essentially bullying by Nintendo assets they know individuals like this won’t have the money to fight them in a court of law.

Also all a bit ironic when it’s been shown in the past Nintendo steal hobbyist coder’s code for emulating on their own systems, again as they know individuals can’t afford to go to the courts for a case they’d absolutely win.

Re: Talking Point: What Would Make You Happy To Give Up Physical Games And Go 100% Digital?

Peach64

I don’t care about the obsession with ownership. My only concern with fully digital is the cost aspect, and to be honest, this is only an issue with Nintendo. At any point in the last 4 years, I could jump on Amazon and get New Horizons for £35-40. Over this time there have been frequent sales where it’s even less. Meanwhile to buy it digitally, it would have cost me a whopping 25% extra, other than a paltry 12 days, in the last 4 years where the digital price came down to match the standard price of physical.

Game Pass is staggering value. I know the Gold Upgrade trick has been downgraded slightly in the last year, but I got 6 years of GPU for less than £3 a month. Just can’t overstate the insane value that is. Over time it will inevitably go up though like the TV services have done.

On the MS ecosystem, digital feels much more future proof than physical. It is inevitable we get consoles without disc drives. Maybe not next gen, but it’s coming. My huge collection of 360 discs then become obsolete, but I’m almost certain to be able to still download and play all the 360 games I’ve bought digitally over the years. Nintendo will never do this because re-releasing old games is such a big part of theory strategy, through remasters or remakes. They don’t want to to keep access to the stuff you bought a Generation or two ago.
