It’s definitely not as good as Planet Coaster or Planet Zoo, but I think the reviews were a bit harsh on it (the Push Square review is much higher than the norm). If you’re a Jurassic Park fan, you’ll likely get some enjoyment from it.
Interested to watch this. I know it's not the same people, but the Toys That Made Us is one of the best docu-series I've ever seen. A lot of the toys I don't care about, but it's still fascinating.
I do think these things are not aimed at fans as hardcore as us though. More the casual gamers that buy 1-2 games a year, and don't visit forums or watch gaming stuff on youtube.
@SwitchForce PS2 has pretty much the best software attach rate of any console out there. Over 10 games sold for every console. Doesn’t sound like people bought it just for DVDs. The Switch is around 6.5 for each console.
First two Paper Mario games are among my favourite of all time, but it's now been over 15 years since the series had a great game. Super Paper Mario seemed like a big drop in quality at the time, but even that was decent. Since then, I'd go as far as saying they've all been BAD games. It's now like Star Fox, a series that is lauded, but has far more bad games than good games.
I've got rid of all physical media other than games and I'm so happy with it. So much needless clutter out of my house.
There's so many issues with games though, and with Nintendo more than most. With music, movies and TV shows I know there's no worry about things becoming unavailable, but with gaming it's far too common. Hopefully in a few years, console generations and dedicated hardware will be consigned to history, and that will at least stop games being 'stuck' on old hardware. The licensing issue will still remain though.
Another issue is the pricing. Sales are great, but it's still so much easier to find physical games dropping in price, and of course the pre-owned market.
@ThanosReXXX I bought a new PC in March, and not many come with a disc drive these days. If you're buying a PC game it's likely through steam or EGS, and if you're watching films, it's probably on a streaming service.
Everyone is acting like the PS2 had poor software sales, but it had a better attach rate than ANY Nintendo hardware. The total PS2 software 50% higher than the total DS software despite similar hardware numbers sold. It sold a TON of software, but it was spread over a huge choice of games. With Switch, everyone has a similar library, ie the Nintendo releases.
Crazy that they're charging full price for this, and also delisted the Wii U version immediately. They built their gaming business on anti-consumer practices and still going strong.
A lot of the switch games included in those numbers are also ports from their previous consoles. The Switch release schedule feels too much like the Wii U for me. Yes, there are more 3rd party ports coming in which will satisfy a lot of people, but for someone that buys all consoles and uses Nintendo machines just for Nintendo exclusives... it's really no better than the Wii U.
In 2018, 2019 and 2020, the only Switch games that really interest me are Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Luigi's Mansion 3 and Pokemon Sword/Shield. That's nothing in 2018, and so far nothing in 2020.
I was really excited about the idea of them consolidating and just bringing out a hybrid machine, but personally, there's less interesting games now than ever.
2020 has been pretty bad, and a lot of ports of good games and DLC isn't going to change that for me. I don't care for Animal Crossing at all, and Paper Mario is now done for me a series. Two great games, and then 15 years of rubbish. There's literally been nothing for me. I'm sure people will go nuts for the Mario ports, but again, it's not exciting getting games I already own and can play quite easily.
Having said that, it's not as bad as 2016. 2020 has had nothing for me, but I struggle to see how anyone was satisfied with 2016.
God damn it. Why SE? I haven't bought a version of DQXI yet because I didn't want the crappy music from the PS4 or the massively downgraded visuals of the Switch. How hard would it be to put out an actual definitive version instead of making people choose if they want the superior visuals or audio?
This looked very interesting, and of course Yuji Naka is a legend, but I always worry that the industry has moved on. Sometimes we're nostalgic for older developers, but find when they put out a game that's just as good as anything they've done in the past, it doesn't feel as good, because actually games have come a long way.
There's nothing lazy about it. They don't make games for PS4 and XB1 because they like those machines, but because they make money. Switch, like any Nintendo console will always have a couple of big drawbacks for 3rd parties, and that's the fanbase's tendency to not really buy 3rd party games in big numbers, but also the work involved in porting. They can create a game that runs on PS4 and XB1 with minimal changes needed, so one project can sell to a huge userbase over 150 million strong. Making something work on Switch takes a lot more work, which costs a lot more money.
The disc-less PS5 is clearly the main design. The disc drive looks awkwardly added on.
Physical media is becoming a huge bottle neck for gaming, and that's only going to get worse as SSD takes over. I don't think there will be any disc drive options for the PS6 and 5th gen of Xbox.
Nintendo will take longer as usual, but they'll go the same way eventually.
As someone that gets all the consoles, it's hard to get excited about ports. The exception would be games that are now very expensive to play legally. Thousand Year Door, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance for examples, or games that can only be played with horrible controls like Skyward Sword. All on board for those ports.
I used to love the Paper Mario series, but it’s really been warped into a totally different type of game lately that I don’t enjoy anywhere near as much.
I’m all on board for the Mario re-rereleases though. Sunshine and Galaxy with comfortable controllers would be amazing, and 3D World would mean there’s really no reason to keep a Wii U about.
Definitely backing this. People are naive for thinking Platinum can self fund any projects, let alone one as risky as this. Game development is a long stretch where employees (of which they have over 200) need to still be paid, but you get no income until the product is shipped to retail. You can’t be independent when you’re that big. You either need a publisher or crowdfunding, and I doubt any publisher would go near W101 after its previous commercial failure.
It’s clearly too much for PS4/Xbox One. 2020 games are like those 2013 games, Bioshock Infinite, Last of Us and GTA V, where they really needed the next gen to do them justice.
Witcher 3 was 5 years ago. Cyberpunk is a different animal.
@Rodan2000 How would that work? Publishers funded all their previous games, so publishers get the profits from previous games. People working for Platinum get paid a salary like the rest of us. You can’t be with independent when you’re as big as Platinum. You’re saying over 200 people should go a few years without being paid so they can put out a game?
Finished up Super Mario Galaxy yesterday and now playing through Twilight Princess. If there’s time before returning to work, going to play Spider-Man on PS4.
And this was at the end of that gen. Scary thing is the Sega Saturn is also 25 years old and the Playstation will be hitting in in a couple of weeks time.
As usual, gamers go over the top with their vitriol, but at the same time, I do think it's a very valid point how slow the progress of the Pokemon series has been, and that has been highlighted even more by how after over 20 years of waiting, the first home console mainline game doesn't feel like that big of a jump at all.
The Lite will sell crazy numbers. Nintendo revisions always do because they hit NEW customers but huge percentages of existing owners rebuy hardware too.
Hopefully they bring a Nintendo Selects range to the Switch at the same time!
So happy to see Fire Emblem doing so well. Seems crazy to think Nintendo were ready to pull the plug if Awakening didn’t improve the sales figures in previous entries.
It might not be a surprise to see it hold number one without completion but a drop of only 47% is very impressive. Standard week 2 drop is usually between 80% and 90%
Was kind of standard Nintendo E3 for me. Not enough new announcements, especially if you take away ports, but thought Luigi's Mansion 3, Fire Emblem and Pokemon looked great, even if we've seen plenty from those games already. The announcement of NM3 was hardly a surprise, but still enjoyed it. At first, was not really digging the 'sequel' treatment for Breath of the Wild instead of a brand new game, but I'll definitely give it a chance, after all, Majora's Mask was kind of the same situation.
My initial reaction was disappointment that it just looked like more Breath of the Wild (sounds daft, but you know what I mean), but Majora's Mask is still one of my favourites, so if it's that sort of deal I'm fully on board.
This is an awful lot of words written about a trailer for a film nobody cares about. The sonic movie looks bad? So like every other video game movie then. No big deal. Just forget it exists.
@Marios-love-child Disney Life was a lengthy ly trial for a Disney Streaming service that only launched in a few countries. Not sure if they’ve confirmed what happens to it now but it wouldn’t surprise me if it goes, replaced by this.
I don’t think this will be the one, but the type of thing is the future, and I don’t know why people are so resistant to the idea. I’ve always found gamer’s attachment to hardware a little weird. You don’t see movie buffs fighting over models of blu-Ray players or streaming services. Consoles are just there to play our games.
People are also obsessed with ownership. Live in the moment. I bet 99% of people never go back and ever replay the games they make such a fuss over ‘owning’.
Looked great to me. Perhaps not a huge leap graphically, but they usually purposefully make such small strides so they can easily churn out the next one without having to worry too much about how they will innovate, so expectations were kept relatively in check on my end. Will be buying a Switch the day this comes out!
