This was inevitable, but makes me really sad as I have 24 year old Pokemon brought through the gens and now it’s all being cut off. I hope when they move on from Switch consoles they don’t have to leave Home behind to move to something else.
@JC016 it’s pretty much impossible. To say you owned a digital copy they’d have to ensure it was available FOREVER which is not feasible, or go without DRM which is not realistic either.
And there’s no sign of this stopping either. Component prices are going to continue their sharp trajectory for price increases for at least the next two years.
Switch 2 sales are very impressive, though Gamecube was famously a flop, and Nintendo weren't really trying in the UK market until the Wii, so not sure this is really much of a milestone at all. They dropped the price prior to the launch based on it struggling in the US.
Nintendo’s logic of costumers happily paid at the time can just be turned around against them. They knew there were tariffs and went ahead and imported millions of units anyway.
@Dee123 Nintendo did that and they got their money back. Now their customers are saying…hey, what about me?
It’s crazy that people think a corporation would willingly turn away from something that was a money-maker. They only sell all the crap they don’t make up for the dwindling physical gaming market. And for people saying 12% is not insignificant, that’s true, but GameStop can see how this is dwindling more and more each year. It’s silly to try and chase an already small market that is inevitably going to be wiped out in under a decade
As excited as people will be to hear Obsidian + Fallout, this is not the same studio that put out New Vegas over 15 years ago. Even before the recent cuts, there were very few people that were still there who worked on that game. Outer Worlds and Avowed are not bad games, but they’re also not game of the generation tier games either.
If this was an actual Definitive Version, I'd happily have paid full price, but everything that came after the original PS4 version has downgraded visuals, and the PS4 version had inferior audio.
Bizarre that after all this time they've not put out a version that takes the best of both.
I don’t think their next gen console has physical media. Physical sales become less and less of the overall market every year, even on Nintendo. In 7-8 years it’s going to be practically nothing.
The reaction to Sony’s announcement today from all over the gaming internet shows how unaware people are of this. Some people think this is Sony dooming themselves as they’re going to lose so many sales. 85-90% of sales are already digital and it’s rising every year.
Everyone saying the industry is doomed, but the numbers don’t lie. Physical has been dying for a long time and right now the numbers it moves compared to digital is pretty irrelevant. You’re all acting like 50% of gamers aren’t going to stand for this, when in reality only 10% are buying physical, and who knows which percentage of those will be upset that it’s going away.
Unfortunately for the people that like to stare at shelves full of boxes, there’s no complicated reason for this other than physical media is done. It will continue to exist in a boutique sort of way, like vinyls or Criterion Collection releases, but not in any way that is remotely mainstream.
It looked for un-Nintendo to me. For years (decades?) we've had people put out tech demos of Mario or Zelda in something like the latest unreal engine, and people moan about the art style, but ironically most of those attempts look way more artistic than what Nintendo are doing this year with Star Fox and Zelda.
Usually I’m the one saying there wasn’t much for me while others are raving about it, but I definitely felt pretty positive this time, while it seems like it had a mostly negative reception online.
I do have other consoles so usually don’t care about ports of older games, but JRPGs are the exception. The Xenoblade stuff was good, and I’ll definitely buy the Kingdom Hearts stuff and Metaphor Refantazio.
I’ll get Star Fox and Fire Emblem but I already knew that so barely paid attention to their segments as I don’t want to be spoiled. I’m looking forward to the Ocarina remake, but I don’t think that teaser was particularly good for creating hype.
Great news! But has always with these late Switch ports, it’s probably going to take an age to get to a parity on sales with the other consoles. No way I’m paying full price yet again for these. The All in One package regularly goes on sale for 60% off on the PS Store.
I’m very certain P4 Revival will come. Who actually knows when Persona 6 will come? From that reveal it seems like they’re super early in development and it could easily be 5 years or more away. If it’s a PS6 game, it might be too much for a Switch 2.
It will be fine. Most people are not going to want to pay more, knowing a few days ago it was a lot cheaper. In a month from now it’s going to be irrelevant though.
I have no plans to buy this game, official sources say.
Seriously I might have actually done it if it was a true definitive edition, but the graphics are still worse than the PS4 original release. That’s nothing to do with the Switch hardware as even the PS4 ‘definitive’ version has the downgraded graphics.
Interested to see the comparisons on this, as so far DQ XI does not really have a definitive version. When they released the version with orchestral scores on all platforms, they downgraded the graphics quite significantly. Maybe we’ll finally see the best graphics and orchestral score in one version?
Edit: No need to wait on DF for this one, the footage is clearly the downgraded visuals. Why is it so hard, SE?
It’s annoying that DQXI doesn’t really have a definitive edition due to Square making some really dumb decisions. You either have to settle for inferior visuals and performance or inferior audio.
What a mess they’ve made. Honestly I thought the Series X was a fantastic machine. The handled backwards comparability in an amazing way. I can redownload most of my purchases from all the way back on the original Xbox. The hardware does wonderful improvements that don’t need devs to go back and patch old games in a way that I assume most people don’t realise given the hype over the the improvements we see on Switch 2 which are so meager in comparison. And of course, Series X updates for free instead of being charged.
But the last 5 years have shaken all my faith in the future of the Xbox Brand with all their going back and forth on big decisions.
The Independent Review could very well be copied and pasted as a comment on the current state of the game industry. Everything is sequels and remakes across games, movies and even books. It’s depressing.
This is why I got a Switch 2 at launch. I knew there would be nothing in the first year or two I wanted to play, but all consumer electronics are just going to get more expensive now.
A remake and a Star Fox game (which is almost always a remake without being referred to as one) being your big releases hardly sounds like a bumper year to me.
It's definitely a spoiler. Stuff can be in marketing material, and still be a spoiler. It's why a lot of people don't watch trailers anymore. It can still be a spoiler if it's on some poster too, although I can't say I'm familiar with that as my local movie theatre doesn't put posters up.
Glad it’s confirmed. It was the difference between buying or not for me. Now I wonder what icon the Pokemon will get. That awesome little Gameboy icon for the 3DS VC games made me recatch a big bunch of my living dex.
I know there's going to be a load of things I don't care about, but Gen 10 is going to be up there with GTA VI as one of my most anticipated games of the year.
I guess Gale of Darkness on NSO will be nice too, but I could take it or leave it.
I've seen videos of people comparing it to the Wii U version upscaled through an emulator, and it does somehow look worse. So I can understand people being annoyed at having to pay for an upgrade when people coding an emulator in their spare time can achieve better results.
Both for me! I always get both versions. Funnily enough, I’ve still not bought Legends ZA because for me Pokemon become about my collection of them. ZA has nothing new so I’m not really interested.
Meanwhile, every Pokemon game prior to Switch has time ticking down on you being able to bring your Pokemon into the modern day games. If they put up every past Pokemon title up digitally on Switch to buy for this price, I’d buy them all.
This is great, but why just FRLG? I hope we get at the least the OG Gameboy games too. New users can’t download Pokemon bank anymore so all the old physical editions from prior to the Switch are cut off from bringing Pokemon to modern day games.
Also, it’s way better than these are not included in NSO. No way would they have allowed Home integration if you had save states available as they don’t want people using that to clone Pokemon.
I’m torn on the price. Personally I’ll happily pay it, and you could always tell people to go look at the price of the cartridges on the aftermarket and see if they still think it’s a bad deal. On the other hand, they are just dumping a rom, so in terms of the resources they spent on this it’s close to zero.
Doesn't matter why people are doing it. Emulators are legal and Nintendo are bullying people here because they know these people don't have the money to take it to court, where it would be ruled they are doing nothing wrong.
It's kind of ironic, as Nintendo has used the work of hobbyist programmers in the past to provide emulation.
I’m sure it’s considered a bonus because it’s not really a MGS game. It’s the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection, not the Metal Gear Master Collection. I think people hoping for Rising or Acid will be disappointed.
