Re: Random: Unofficial Legend Of Zelda NES Remake Gets 20-Minute Gameplay Video

Paulo

Honestly I have been expecting a remake of Zelda 1 and 2 with modern graphics since I played Super Mario All-Stars in 1993. Both are excellent games that have a huge potential for remakes. Link's Awakening for Switch is amazing despite the game's strict design, but considering Zelda 1 is open world, it would have been a better fit on Switch.

Re: Talking Point: How Do You Define 'Retro'?

Paulo

I would consider retro all generatioms up to N64. That includes Pong, Atari, NES, Master System, Tubographix, Genesis, SNES, Neo Geo, Saturn, PS1, N64, the Boys (GB, GBC and GBA and all related handheld by other manufacturers). I say this because: 1. Pixel 2D games are widely considered retro and 2. Most generatioms past GC/PS2/XBOX still hold up very well to this day. Considering retro what came up 10 years ago is not a good indicator by me (heck, DKCTF, MK8 and SSB came to WiiU in 2014 and these are still very modern games)

Re: Talking Point: Will Nintendo Wring One More Holiday From Switch Before Revealing New Hardware?

Paulo

I used to believe Switch 2 would repeat Switch 2 and launch in March. Not anymore though, after today's announcement. The reveal will come very late in the year or early 2025, to let Switch shine on black Friday and the Holiday season, with a June-September release. And I believe a 3D Mario, Animal Crossing, a Mario spinoff like Kart or Party, and also a remade Zelda games are releasing before Holiday 2025 (with Metroid Prime 4 cross-gen and the final 1st party Switch 1 game). And of course at lauch a quirty and innovative title (like the Switch had 1-2 Switch and Arms).

Re: Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution GBA Limited Run Pre-Orders Go Live This Week

Paulo

GBA games cost 30 to 35 dollars at most back in the day (Nintendo only raised the price to 40 with the Nintendo DS and continued with the same price for 3DS for top tier games), and many were released at 20 dollars and there were a few that cost 15 dollars. That was 20 years ago, but even when considering this, 60 dollars is a bit steep. On the other hand, the other good GBA new game, Goodboy Galaxy (where is the review, NintendoLife?), is being sold in the regular edition for 55 euros, which is basically 60 dollars. So, there is nowhere to run If you want to play on the original GBA in a regular cart.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl: Metroid

Paulo

Classic Séries NES is the best. Too bad It's not an original piece, but just a ripoff of the cover of Metroid II for the Game Boy, with Samus art from that game. Had they used the same pose but with art from the first game, It would get my vote. But since It didn't, I vote for the original grey pixel art cover.

Re: Is Dave The Diver An Indie Game? The Game Awards' Host Weighs In

Paulo

Indie means independent, generally a small/médium company that sustains itself and sometime is hired by a larger company for a period of time to develop some projects. If a small studio is a subsidiary of a bigger company, no matter how small It remains, It makes zero sense to keep calling It Indie.

Re: Video: Where Does Mario Kart Go From Here?

Paulo

@FlyingDunsparce I still believe Tour is MK 9. If the next game is MK 10 or X, then I am right. Graphicswise, Tour is pretty similary to MK 7, so it was easier to port tracks from MK 7 than from MK 8, which is more graphically advanced. Likewise, MKSC from GBA is MK 3 and has tracks from Super Mario Kart, but not from MK 64.

Re: Video: Where Does Mario Kart Go From Here?

Paulo

@FlyingDunsparce forget about the name Mario Kart 9 since Tour is 9. Tour is even acknowledged in the MK8 Booster Pass, so it's definitely part of the séries. On the other hand, I am pretty sure MK Live Home Circuit is considered a spin off, therefore it's not MK 10. So, the next MK is 10 and It makes sense when the rumours call It MK X.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Donkey Kong

Paulo

@Sisilly_G due to the crash, the Idea of the classic black boxes was to show the game graphics exactly as they were (not exactly really, but It was close). In the Atari days, you saw spaceships, cars and real people on the boxart, but in the real game the spaceships was Just a triangle. Major disappointment. Nintendo wanted to avoid this.

Re: Feature: Why I Still Love My Wii U

Paulo

@Ultimapunch I found out about the passing of Iwata the night I beat the single player mode of Splatoon. I went to Miiverse to post about It and everybody was talking about Iwata. I didn't want to believe and checked websites and yes, It was true. I cried like a baby for days. I never met him, but felt he was really close because of his speeches (Heart of a Gamer https://www.ign.com/articles/2005/03/11/gdc-2005-iwata-keynote-transcript and many others) and E3 and Nintendo Direct appaerences. He really was like a rock star for Nintendo fans. And Reggie in the US and Satoru Shibata in Europe were his band mates. But notice that, except for Miyamoto, Nintendo since then has been more reserved concearning its executives. Even Takahashi and Koizumi don't appear much. Satoru Shibata was the voice of Nintendo Europe for years, but has been very quiet in Japan. And I have never seen public speeches by former president Kimishima, president Furukawa and even Doug Bowser.

Re: Feature: Why I Still Love My Wii U

Paulo

Another thing that hurt the WiiU was the need to develop and market games for 2 similar systems. Why buy NSMBU if I just got NSMB2 for the 3DS? Why buy DKCTF if I have DKCR for the 3DS? The dual system strategy worked best during the N64/GBC days, GCN/GBA days (in both the home console was designer for 3D games and the handheld for 2D games) and the Wii/DS days (the former designed for motion controls and the later for touch screen). But when you have the WiiU and 3DS, similar concepts with similar games, it's difficult to sell both.

Re: Feature: Why I Still Love My Wii U

Paulo

WiiU had some mojo the Switch doesn't have. Maybe because depending on the game you could play with the pro controller, wiimote or gamepad, therefore every game played differently, giving you a fresh experience every time (some examples: MK8/NSMBU/NSLU/Need for Speed Most Wanted I played with the wiimote sideways, Nintendo Land/Game&Wario/Star Fox Zero/ZombiU/Affordable Space Adventures/Mario Maker/Splatoon I played with the Game Pad, Pikmin 3/Call of Duty Ghosts I played with the wiimote and nunchuk, DKCTF I played with the pro controller. A fresh experience yes, but a marketing nightmare). The Switch, except for the joycon drift, is masterfully designed and easier to market, but looks and plays more like a gadget (I love motion controls on Wii and WiiU but not on the Switch).

Re: Bandai Namco Forms New Dev Studio Focused On Commissioned Projects

Paulo

@Arkay the more Star Fox the merrier.
I own Adventures but only played the intro.
Assault was great overall. I remember the on foot and tank sections were heavily criticized back then. Nintendo and Namco could have easily fixed this by adding a "Falco mode" after beating the game, where you play as Falco Lombardi, the only character who is always on the arwing. Otherwise only levels 1, 5, 8 and 10 were 100% arwing. My personal favorite level is Mission 3. Sargasso Space Zone; Hostilities Revisited though.
But honestly Zero is a better game. The morphing ability turned out to be more fun, since you can transition from Walker to arwing instantly, no need to get back to the ship.

Re: Sega's Executive Director Wants Sonic Games And Movies To "Surpass Mario"

Paulo

Not gonna happen. As great as some Sonic games are, the best part of these games is when Sonic is running very fast and you have very little control of him. Mario, on the other hand, is at its best in more challenging levels when you have to master controlling Mario. Who doesn't love chain jumping lots of goombas, koopa troopas, bullet Bills? At least that is my opinion.

Re: Nintendo Expands Its Switch Online N64 Library With Another Game This Week

Paulo

@Ristar24 both SML and SML 2 are excellent, but I too prefer the first one, as it is faster paced, not as zoomed in and so short and perfect to be played in short bursts. I also miss other first generation Nintendo titles such as Radar Mission and Solar Striker, as I've never played either of them, but am familiar due to always seeing them on the flyers that came with the games back then.

Re: Talking Point: Which Version Of Super Mario Bros. 3 Do You Prefer?

Paulo

By the way, there is at least one important gameplay difference when comparing the Japanese and Western releases of the original. In Japan, when you are hit, It doesn't matter If you are Super, Racoon, Frog etc, you will always become normal Mario when hit. In the North American version, If you are wearing a suit, you will always become Super Mario when hit. If hit again, you will them become regular Mario. Basically the game is easier by giving you an extra hit point.

Re: Talking Point: Which Version Of Super Mario Bros. 3 Do You Prefer?

Paulo

I voted GBA Edition because of the extra levels, though the ereader was not a good choice, making them some levels too expensive and others impossible to be played, at least until the WiiU days. And also the ability to visit any world and level at will after beating the game. As a plus It was and still is magical to have such a masterpiece on a small device such as the GBA/GBASP/GBM. They are all excellent versions and my favorite SMB game 2D or not 2D.

Re: Feature: Game Boy Color - A Quarter Century Of Colour Nintendo Handhelds

Paulo

I voted it's absolutely its own thing because of the exclusive titles that could not be played on the old GB (clear carts) and also because many other titles run better on the GBC, despite being compatible with the older models (black carts such as Ghosts'n Goblins). Also, the plethora of titles released in such short period. But, alas, I don't think the GBC has aged as well as the GBA.
