Re: Paper Mario Producer Says "It's A Necessity" To Change The Combat System In Every Entry

Onion

Is this guy still defending this game? Good lord. I feel like this must be the 3rd or so article where the producer has been whining in some way about this game. It comes off as if he's apologizing. I know the game has a fanbase but as far as I'm concerned, it has failed utterly as a Mario RPG or Paper Mario game. At this rate I think it'd be best to simply rebrand these games rather than continue to use the Paper Mario name. If the title is barely going to play anything like the older games, just rebrand it as something else and drop the Paper Mario from the title. Continuing to use the Paper Mario brand for games that barely have anything to do with the original or TTYD is just going to make people mad.

All of this is assuming I even believe the claims that the old guard is making it this hard to make creative use of the Mario branding. Considering how off the wall Mario Oddy was, I'm not entirely sure I buy the idea that the higher ups at Nintendo somehow forced the development team to fill their more recent Paper Mario games with Toads, removing anything remotely resembling an RPG, etc. Considering how imaginative the games prior to Sticker Star were, I really doubt any of this is true. The more this producer tries to defend the game, the less interested I become in Origami King. Definitely not a good way to get people to buy your game.

Re: Sword And Shield Are Now The Best-Selling Pokémon Games Since Gold And Silver

Onion

Honestly I agree with the notion that people buy it purely based on the title being Pokemon. The majority of my friends who bought the game did so because it was Pokemon, but they were also fairly happy with it, too. I have another friend looking to buy a Switch and one of their top priorities is Sword and Shield. Even knowing what I know about the game, I myself have debated buying the game numerous times simply because it's Pokemon. There's also a degree of peer pressure involved with Pokemon games, as these are social games that are vastly more fun when played with others. The more people buy Pokemon Sword and Shield, the more people will want them so they can play it too. This is what brought me into the Pokemon fold in the first place. I saw kids are school playing it and I got into it. Then my friends wanted to play it. Now it's the same thing all over again, all of my friends are playing it and I'm finding myself more and more likely to buy a copy and join them.

If Pokemon has taught me one thing, it's that if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Re: Paper Mario Producer Says Team Is "No Longer Able To Graphically Represent Individual Characteristics" In Toad NPCs

Onion

Not really sure I understand the statement that Mario is "just Toads". I've played pretty much every single Mario game and I can tell you, it's not just Toads. There's tons of characters they can bring back to use in the games. I get that they don't want to pull a Sega and end up making more characters than the games can support (or risk stealing Mario's spotlight), but restricting it to the point that you're forced to use Toads is pretty senseless. The games prior to Sticker Star weren't like that at all.

Just sounds like a lot of whining from a producer who has continued to fail to capture what made the first few Paper Mario games great. Definitely does not encourage me to try the game at all.

Re: Paper Mario Producer Says It's No Longer Possible To Modify Mario Characters

Onion

Is this why the newer games are so full of Toads? Either way, I hate this and it's one of many reasons I stopped buying modern Paper Mario titles. The creative characters found in games like Paper Mario, TTYD, and Superstar Saga are one of the reasons I love those games. It gives the games personality and charm, which is something I felt the series has lacked since Sticker Star. All they've done is load the games up with Toads and paper jokes and we're expected to enjoy it.

Re: Random: Brie Larson's Boyfriend Said She Was Taking Super Mario Galaxy Too Seriously, So She Threw Him Out

I hate Brie Larson and find her completely insufferable but this still got a chuckle out of me. I can only imagine the conversation that must have taken place.

"You're spending too much time with Mario instead of me!"

While I also disagree that 3D World/Land is Nintendo's greatest achievement, I myself am a big fan of those two games. I absolutely love the style of 3D World and I'm still waiting for it to either come to Switch or get a sequel. Mario Galaxy 1/2 are pretty great too and I wouldn't mind a Galaxy 3.

Re: Pokémon Sword And Shield's Expansion Pass Will Adapt To Suit Your Own Pokémon's Levels

Onion

Yes, it's called level scaling and it's been a thing in rpgs for over a decade now. You know Pokemon has fallen way behind the curve when level scaling is touted as a big new thing. It's a pretty controversial mechanic with a lot of players hating it and a lot of players loving it. It became something of a meme with Skyrim because of how disproportionately strong some of the regular enemies were compared to the fixed level bosses. Not sure how well it'll work in a Pokemon game but it could prevent issues that we've seen in the past where the game becomes a cakewalk, or encourage people to use something other than their starter.

I'd be more interested in seeing an entire Pokemon game designed more like the wild area, personally.

@Noid

That plus the fact the real Splatterhouse is on the other Switch collection so I imagine they're trying not to cannibalize any potential sales of it since the inclusion of Splatterhouse was a big selling point for a lot of fans. I imagine a lot less people are interested in Wanpaku Graffiti, though. I'd be interested in seeing it included though for the sake of having an officially translated and released version.

Re: Feature: Best Nintendo Switch Golf Games

Neo Turf Masters is pretty legit, but I haven't tried Golf Story yet. I fully intend to though. NES Open is pretty good too and it was the first golf game I remember playing and liking as a kid.

I'm curious if we're going to get Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti as that would be the first time the game has been playable in the west, to my knowledge. I would probably pick up the first volume for that alone.

With that said, there's no reason this couldn't all be one pack. I can fit an entire NES library on a 4GB SD card so there's really no excuse to split the volumes up other than money.

Re: 3D Realms' Ion Fury Brings Old-School FPS To Switch Next Month

Controversy aside I've been waiting for a console version of this game. I'm looking forward to seeing how this shapes up. If the ports are good, I'll definitely be getting this. I love these retro revival games. Between this and games like Xenocrisis, Fight N Rage, and Blazing Chrome, my wallet is going to be in some serious pain.

Re: Poll: Does Resident Evil 4 Really Need The REmake Treatment?

Onion

This is the one RE game I was hoping they wouldn't try to remake and it looks like I was wrong. Why not remake the games that actually need it? The most logical next step would have been Code Veronica, instead they pick the one RE game that every electronic device and some kitchen appliances runs. I love RE4 and I'm very nostalgic for it but at this point I'm just like "enough with this game already". At this point I'd sooner see a remake of the GBC Resident Evil Gaiden. Resident Evil 4 was one of those rare moments in gaming where a developer team absolutely nails it and hits a home run, and now they're probably going to ruin it. While I loved the RE2 and 3 remakes, the remake for 3 was less than stellar in my opinion and a bit of a step down from the last remake.

I was concerned Capcom was going to do what Capcom does and milk this and that's absolutely what it looks like they're going to do. Meanwhile, Dino Crisis 1 and 2 could really use some love. Why not give those a remake? Oh well, whatever. Chances are I'll end up buying it anyway.

Re: Streets Of Rage 4 Is Getting Classic Characters, But Confusion Reigns Over Release Date

Onion

Adding the classic versions of characters was a smart move considering that SoR Remake did the same and is a great way to please most fans. For me, those SoR2 sprites will always be top notch. I'll be curious to see if the classic versions also play differently or have subtle differences.

Also was that Shiva I saw in the character select? If they make it so he's fully playable and not semi broken the way he was in SoR3, that'll be really awesome. Some of the lighting effects on the sprites in that video are pretty cool too. Not sure if it'll be a day one for me, but I'm definitely getting it at some point.
