Re: Ultra Rare Pokémon Card Sells For $60,000, Gets Lost In The Mail

Onion

I don't even understand how something like that could happen, the article says they had tracking numbers and everything. Once the item didn't arrive, all they have to do is check who was driving the truck that day. I buy off the internet all the time and have shipped my fair share of items too, this really shouldn't happen.

I smell a rat in the woodpile. Someone definitely swiped that card, no way was it "lost".

Not gonna lie, the inclusion of a normal dpad is a big selling point for me as well. I mean, it's not a big deal since I own a Pro controller which has an excellent dpad, but the face buttons don't make a good dpad when I'm going mobile. I was at the vet yesterday and I played my Switch for about 10 minutes while waiting, and I was reminded of how crap the face buttons are for 2D movement while playing Castlevania Collection. It was doable but not ideal.

I really hate that this didn't turn out well, I was absolutely dying to play a good Actraiser clone, but it seems this game isn't what I wanted. Oh well... less money to spend I guess and all the more reason to enjoy Actraiser for what it is.

@Ralizah is correct, there's loads of quality Switch ports out there and while many of them still don't look quite as good as their big brother counterparts on PS4, Xbone, and PC, they're amazing technical achievements. Unfortunately, for every truly great Switch port out there, there's about 5 more terrible ones that follow. It makes you really appreciate what they were able to do with games like Hellblade, MK11, and Doom.

I really want to see what they do with the wild area before passing judgment, but the animations we've seen so far aren't too great. Hopefully they're just placeholders. I really hope the wild area is a testing grounds for a more open world approach to future Pokemon games. I feel like the franchise would benefit greatly from an expanded scope and if they did that, I'm sure most fans would be more understanding of Pokemon culling and whatnot.

Re: Feature: Inside The World Of Pokémon ROM Hacks

Onion

@ShadJV

I don't claim to know the legality of reproduction carts but they are actively sold all over the internet, so I imagine if they were illegal, someone would have taken legal action by now. They've even been featured in popular Youtube videos such as Simon's Quest Redaction being featured in an episode of AVGN. I myself question the morality behind making money off of someone's hack but seriously these repros are everywhere. I don't know for sure but I can't fathom them being illegal when they are so widely distributed. Maybe there's some kind of loophole? Maybe the publishers just don't care? I have no idea. It's kind of murky once you get into translations and whatnot. If it's illegal to sell a repro of say, Terranigma in the US (where it was not sold) then your only recourse is to pirate it which is also illegal. Or learn Japanese and import it. I ended up importing it and when I learned how to patch physical cartridges, I simply patched the Japanese cartridge with a translation patch.

EDIT: Forgot to mention I'm in America, not sure if that changes the legality of reproduction carts or not but this is a EU site so I feel like I should point that out.

But yeah it's a total non-issue either way and definitely not the same as actually pirating a game. One of the most impressive rom hacks I've ever seen is the Atari Super Mario Bros which somehow turned SMB into an Atari game. I don't know what sorcery this is but it's surprisingly playable, but If I recall the actual cartridge for it that I own does NOT call itself Super Mario Bros for possibly legal reasons.

Re: Feature: Inside The World Of Pokémon ROM Hacks

Onion

I've played a few rom hacks on some of my hacked consoles and even hacked my own Pokemon roms and cartridges (I own pretty much the entire Pokemon series so don't start) a few times just to try something different. After playing some of them, I have a lot of respect for the amount of work that went into these projects.

Also the white knights need to just stop. It's one thing to advocate against piracy, but advocating against fan rom hacks like this is simply being obtuse for the sake of being obtuse. Some publishers like Sega have even hired former rom hackers and fan game developers to develop their games, the most famous of which being Christian Whitehead. He created his own engine known as the Retro Engine and Sega hired the guy to not only make their Sonic CD port, but also made him the producer of Sonic Mania. Not only that, but some of the Sonic Mania team is made up of rom hackers who made some pretty legendary stuff like Sonic Megamix and the Sonic 2 HD project. Also if you've ever played a virtual console game translated into English, you're basically playing a rom hack, as these translations are made by patching the rom directly, literally the same process behind most rom hacks. So the next time you spout off a bunch of nonsense that you don't understand anything about, take a look in your digital collection. There's a chance you might be playing a game that started off as a rom hack, mod, or fan game.

EDIT: Also worth noting that there are legal ways to apply a rom hack to an actual cartridge so this makes the legal white knights look even more stupid, as you don't even necessarily need to download a rom, just the ips patch. You can also purchase pre-patched reproduction cartridges which as far as I know is entirely legal. I ended up with some of these in my collection in fact, so they're pretty commonly distributed.

EDIT 2: On the mention of 151 rom hacks, one of the most common rom hacks for Pokemon I played were hacks that made it easier to get all the Pokemon and their evolutions in a single game, really neat stuff and super helpful for people who like to play Pokemon Stadium 1 and 2 with their own Pokemon. These kinds of hacks are usually known as National dex hacks or Complete Editions.

The Langrisser remakes coming to the west had me stoked, but this has me about to foam at the mouth. This was literally the Harvest Moon game that made a Harvest Moon fan out of me. After experiencing it, I started playing the older entries and got really hardcore into it. I'm not sure how they can compete with Stardew Valley but I'm behind this all the way as long as they keep the core farming aspect in the front and center of the game. (I felt future installments got a bit too Animal Crossing-like and Minecraft-like)

Re: Langrisser I & II Switch Remakes Secure Western Release

Onion

I don't think Fire Emblem has anything to do worry about, Langrisser has never been much of a contender. With that said HOLY CRAP I AM SO HAPPY THIS IS COMING! Nothing is stopping me from getting this game. Of all the recent Langrisser games, I'd say this is one of the better looking ones. It's also great that the teams behind the new Langrisser games are themselves fans of Langrisser who grew up playing it in China. The Langrisser series died out a long time ago but now the fans it created over the years are reviving it. It's awesome.

@Ralizah

Yeah there's a classic mode that changes all the portraits into their classic artwork, they announced it a while back. It changes basically everything to better resemble classic Langrisser including the map.

https://youtu.be/pIz6NTtszO8

Honestly I can't wait for this to come out so I can finally ditch Langrisser Mobile.

Update: Swapped the youtube link out for a better one. The actual battle sprites are the only thing unchanged in Classic mode so far, but I imagine it won't matter much once you start class changing.

Re: Is Game Freak "Recycling" 3DS Animations In Pokémon Sword And Shield On Switch?

Onion

Nintendolife seriously just now noticed that the animations have been recycled? What the heck do they think people have been ranting and raving for? That's the whole crux of the issue; nothing Gamefreak has shown justifies the culling of Pokemon. I'm not really too bothered by it myself but I can see exactly why people are outraged. My own desire to get the game continues to drop but that's just me.

Also wow this is one toxic comment section. If someone like @JaxonH wants to buy the game, who cares? Let them buy it and enjoy it. Even Metroid Prime: Federation Force had people willing to defend it and buy the game so the idea that someone would be hyped for a POKEMON game is not that hard to believe. It's Pokemon, a massive franchise with a massive fanbase. Of course there's going to be people who buy the game even if there's some negative qualities. That's what fans often do. I mean, I hated the direction Fire Emblem: Fates took and even I eventually bought Conquest because I'm a huge fan of the franchise. I've done nothing but critical (pretty much) of the CTR remake and I'm sure at some point down the line I'm going to end up buying that too.

No need to try and dictate opinions or shame someone for what they like. I didn't like it when it was happening with Marvel vs Capcom Infinity and I don't like it now. I've had to put up with my share of crap for buying games like Bionic Commando and Splatterhouse, I just tune the haters out. I'm gonna do what I want at the end of the day and that's a right we all have.

I really like the idea of these water stages, even if it's something I probably wouldn't utilize much. Maybe in later patches they'll include the option to add water to other themes besides forest.

Love how Bubsy is listed right after "more awesome switch games".

Anyway this is what I've been waiting for, July is going to be an absolutely PACKED month for me with MUA3 and Three Houses releasing on the same month. Sadly I don't get paid until the end of the month, but I know what I'm getting for sure. Astral Chain, Link's Awakening, and Dragon Quest are also must-buys for me once they arrive.

Mana Collection, CV Collection, Contra Collection, and now Bloodstained are draining my wallet at a frightening rate. Now I've got Super Mario Maker 2 and Judgment (PS4) tempting me.

Re: Nintendo Has No Plans To Censor Video Games Like Sony

Onion

Good! It's about time. Let those who enjoy these games enjoy them and those who don't can vote with their wallets.

Night Trap and MK are amusing cases because before the ESRB was established, these games were used against Sega to make them look bad, while Nintendo and their censorship policies made them look like little angels. Releasing Night Trap on the Switch almost feels like giving Sega the middle finger. Haha, I love it.

But yeah, censorship is dumb, if people don't like these games they don't have to buy them, it's as simple as that. I took issue with Fire Emblem Fates due to some of their waifu pandering and whatnot and chose not to buy them, it's really not that hard. I didn't cry out that the game should be censored or anything like that. I just didn't feel like it fit the franchise. Looking at how Three Houses is turning out (and how Echoes was before it), I'd say Intelligent Systems agrees with me on that.

Meanwhile a friend of mine is heavily into the Dead or Alive Volleyball games. Not my thing but I certainly don't pass judgment on them for it. Let everyone enjoy what they want to. In this age of PEGI and ESRB, there is absolutely no reason to go around censoring anything. The ratings system was invented for a reason.

EDIT: If they do eventually release a PC version, there's no promise it'll be any better than the console versions either. I wouldn't mind seeing it come to PC either way, though. As I stated above, it's not even just the 60fps, there's other issues that turn me off from the game, ones I hope to see addressed in future patches. I get the feeling you have a reading comprehension problem or something. I clearly cited other issues such as the wumpa coin system and AI. I guess I could sit here and go through a list of every issue I have of the game just for you, but I really don't want to since my intention was never to hate on or bash the game. If these issues DO get addressed, then that'll greatly increase my opinion of the game and my chances of snatching it up. I have not displayed any ill will towards the game and have even stated that I want it to do well. What is your problem?

Not going to bother to respond to the rest, as you clearly didn't read any of my comments if you think that's the only thing I post. You know nothing about me and your assumptions about me don't interest me at all.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Finds Crash Team Racing On Switch Easy To Recommend

Onion

@Mrbayram92

I'm well aware that the original is 30fps, dude. That's why if they can't improve upon that aspect, I'd sooner stick with that version which is where most of my nostalgia lies anyway. What's your point? Diddy Kong Racing on N64 was basically 15fps and back in the day it was one of the most popular racing games.

The point is that this is a REMAKE on MORE POWERFUL HARDWARE, it should be better in ALL ways. If it's not going to improve upon the original in the ways I want, then why I would I buy the remake? You're the one who sounds dumb if you cannot grasp that. I also don't have to buy the original CTR because I already own it.

@whitespy12

I don't have to defend my position at all, like I said, I have a huge backlog of other games to play and the last thing I need is another new release, especially one that I disagree with. The technical aspects may not be a concern for you or other fans, but for me and others, it most certainly is.

Different strokes for different folks and all that. If it doesn't bother you, then that's really all that matters. I'm glad to see people having fun with it because if it does well enough, they will continue to support the game down the line for people like me who are on the fence.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Finds Crash Team Racing On Switch Easy To Recommend

Onion

@whitespy12

Clearly it IS an issue because I'm not the only one who mentions it. I don't know where you people get that because it runs at 30fps on all versions, that somehow makes it okay. It's a racing game, 30fps is not ideal. Worst of all, the competition this game faces had no problem reaching 60fps and still have great graphics. it IS an issue and it's definitely costing them some sales. On top of that, it has long loading times and other issues as well.

Running like crap on all platforms isn't an excuse. Hopefully they patch it cause I DO have an interest in this game, but as it stands I'd rather just play my original copy or MK8. For the Switch version, I'm a bit more lenient on the 30fps issue because it IS a Switch game, 720p and 30fps is pretty bad, but it is somewhat forgiveable. The fact the game runs the same on the stronger consoles tells me this game is poorly optimized.

I hope CTR does well and I'm glad it has fans willing to defend it, but there's simply no defending this game from it's shoddy design. I've no doubt that it's a fun game, but all versions don't run as smooth as other racers on the market (some of which have vastly superior graphics) which is going to be an issue for some potential buyers. I think Digital Foundry went a little easier on it simply because it is the Nintendo Switch version which is basically a glorified handheld. For me though, this game is pretty low on my buy list unless they can patch 60fps into one of the console versions the way Super Bomberman R did.

@holygeez03

Agreed. I'm not even a graphics person and this is pretty unacceptable for me as well. I have too many other games vying for my attention this year to spend it on a game that can't even be optimized to utilize PS4 Pro. I would have gladly gotten the PS4 version otherwise.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Finds Crash Team Racing On Switch Easy To Recommend

Onion

I personally thought Digital Foundry went a little too easy on this game, but that's just me. They kinda gloss over the 30fps issue. I'll stick to MK8 for now. Not a big fan of the wumpa coin system either, nor am I too impressed with the new AI they implemented. I suppose it's nice to know it runs the same on all platforms, but eh. PS4 version has pretty long load times from what I hear too.

Still not convinced to buy it, especially with how packed these months are getting, but maybe I'll give it a chance at some point. I'm also curious to see how the patches shape the game in the future, so I'll keep an eye on those too.

Re: Super Mario Maker 2 Currently Lets You Upload Just 32 Courses

Onion

Now I'm glad I was on the fence about this game. While I did like many of the changes on offer, this game never did make the leaps I wanted it to. It still sounds like it's a bit limited and having already played my fill of the previous game, I wasn't too crazy about jumping in again. Most likely the only thing I'd do is recreate my old courses and I just didn't see enough on offer here to really let me do what I originally visioned with my courses. Aside from of course, vertical stage building. That at least was a much needed addition as far as I'm concerned.

Learning now that there's a hard cap on the amount of levels you can build has curbed most of what little interest I did have. In the time I owned the Wii U version, I didn't quite reach 32 stages but I did achieve about half that, maybe a bit more. Looking at my works on other games, I'm fairly certain I would reach that cap if I liked the game enough. Doesn't help that this is a packed time of year and there's just so many games vying for my attention.

Raise that cap and we'll talk, Nintendo.

Re: Tweet Analysis Reveals Controversial Pokémon Cull Has Fans Evenly Split

Onion

I'm still pretty much in the middle on the issue. It sucks that they're now culling Pokemon and all that, but it was kind of inevitable with the sheer number of Pokemon. On the other hand, I can understand fearing that your favorite Pokemon won't make the cut.

The big problem however is the quality of the game based on what we've seen. Nothing we've seen so far warrants culling anything. It looks exactly the same as other Pokemon games, complete with crappy animations in battle. If they're going to cull Pokemon from the game, I think it's reasonable to expect the Pokemon to be more animated like they were in Stadium, XD, and Battle Revolution. Instead we get the usual animation where a Pokemon hops in place and a battle effect bops the opponent.

If Gamefreak wants to calm people down, they need to show how the game warrants what people are calling "the culling". Sure, there'll still be very vocal whiners, but it would go a long way to reassuring everyone that the game is truly outstanding enough to justify culling.

Re: Switch Version Of Crash Team Racing Receives Early Patch To Improve Online Multiplayer

Onion

@rushiosan

Yeah I've heard the same on Pushsquare, so the PS4 version has the same issues. Too many things put me off the game and reduce it to "on sale maybe" for me. If I didn't own the original game though, ehhh, I dunno.

Hopefully some of these issues will be patched.

@Floki

This would be my guess as well, in that case I wouldn't mind if they had dialed back some of the aesthetics if it meant a higher FPS. No word yet on whether or not the Pro and X version are 30fps but I assume so.

I've seen worse though. Seikiro on consoles is atrocious about this and way back on N64 we had Diddy Kong Racing running at a glorious 15fps, and we loved it.

For the record, I normally care very little about these things but for games like this and Doom on Switch, it IS kind of important for me because I have access to other versions where the fps might be better. I'm a Switch/PS4/PC owner so I have options to consider, plus with this being a remake I have to ask myself if I really want to dish out cash for a remake of a game I already own.

Glad they're already patching it though, I'll be watching to see if they can iron out some of the issues.

Re: Switch Version Of Crash Team Racing Receives Early Patch To Improve Online Multiplayer

Onion

@USWITCH64

I'm aware of that, doesn't change the fact it kills my interest in the game. Plus as I said, I own the original CTR. If they can't achieve 60fps, I'd rather just play my original copy. With all the graphics-heavy online games having 60fps, I can't excuse a kart racer for not being able to do the same. I have pretty much zero reason to get this as of right now besides kart customization.

I'm not really complaining though. I'll just keep my eye on it and see what happens.

Re: Soapbox: Why Sword And Shield's Pokémon Purge Will Benefit Everyone

Onion

My opinion is pretty much the same as it was in previous articles... This decision could be a big problem for Pokemon. As I said before, Gen 3 did this and it created plenty of outrage until FRLG and Emerald came out. The only way Gamefreak can make this work is if they include any missing Pokemon in future installments as they did with Gen 3.

Of course I've known this was coming for a long time. You keep adding 100+ Pokemon per game and eventually you'll run out of room to keep adding more. From a development POV, it makes sense. It reduces the time they need to spend on each Pokemon. Pokemon Revolution was already showing signs of this with many older gen Pokemon having really lazy animations.

I think it's less that people want to "catch 'em all" and more like people are scared their favorite Pokemon won't be included, which is reasonable concern. If they only cut Pokemon like Dunsparce and such I don't think there'd be nearly as much backlash, but we know this is not likely to be the case. How many Pokemon are culled will really make or break the game. My biggest concern is that this is going to be a Gen 3 situation where they cut out almost every older Pokemon and focus on the newer ones. I mean, what's the point of all the fancy graphics and new animations if your favorite Pokemon aren't even there? That's the point, you want to see your favorites in glorious 3D. That concept was enough to fuel an entire line of games on N64 and GC. If even one favorite is cut, that fan may not buy the game.

As for me, I may still buy the game. I'm not entirely new to this situation, considering most Monster Rancher games are also missing monsters. If the wild area is significant enough, I'll probably still get it.

it's a real crappy situation and I'm sad to see it happen. This would be a real good chance for some of the defunct monster raising games like Jade Cocoon, Dragon Quest Monsters, and Monster Rancher to rise up.

Solo allows you to play as Jason against a bunch of AI bots. They've tweaked the counselor AI enough that they can actually be surprisingly challenging, but they're still pretty dumb. I've had them surprise me a few times by doing intelligent things like calling the police and I've been REALLY surprised when they manage to escape the camp completely.

Still a pretty meh game overall though, as playing as Jason is typically the most boring way to play unless you REALLY want to be Jason. Playing as the counselor offers a more dynamic experience and that is impossible offline unless they've somehow patched in an AI Jason for the Switch release.

Kinda shocked to see none of the Ninja Turtles games mentioned here, but I guess you're focusing on movie licenses? If comic books count, X-men Legends was a great game on GCN. I also really liked Alien 3 on Sega Genesis.

Good list overall though, glad to see someone else out there actually thought Hook was a decent game on SNES, and Batman on NES is actually one of my favorite NES games!

@Jack_Goetz

The Data East Arcade game was pretty good, otherwise the only one I can think of is Robocop vs Terminator. The Data East game got a NES adaption which is arguably the best of the Robocop NES games, but still not that great so I doubt that's the one you're thinking of. (I personally liked it though and it was a commonly found game here in American households).
