Update: Intriguingly, publisher DotEmu has now sent us a press release stating that the release date listed on the Nintendo eShop "is not correct", going on to say that it is releasing "soon". Similarly, the studio has taken to Twitter saying that it "cannot confirm" the release date. Here's DotEmu's comment if you're interested:
It would be very unusual indeed for an eShop listing to be wrong, but stranger things have happened. We'll keep an eye on this story as it develops.
Original Article: It would appear that Streets of Rage 4's release date has been revealed ahead of any official announcement thanks to a Switch eShop listing. According to Nintendo's digital store, the game will launch on 23rd April.
Interestingly, the listing also mentions that additional 'classic' characters will be included, such as Skate and Max from Streets of Rage 2, as well as other undisclosed fighters. These join Axel, Blaze, Adam, Floyd Iraia and Cherry Hunter, who have already been confirmed for the game. Some of the classic fighters come with their own "retro SFX", and you'll be able to toggle the soundtrack to the original Mega Drive music.
Speaking of which, Yuzo Koshiro is already confirmed to be returning, but the overall soundtrack will be created by a wide range of contributors and led by Olivier Derivière. Motohiro Kawashima, Yoko Shimomura, Harumi Fujita, Keiji Yamagishi, Scattle, Das Mörtal, XL Middleton and Groundislava have also be produced music for the game.
At the time of writing, publisher Lizardcube is yet to officially reveal the game's specific release date, but listings on the Switch eShop are just as trustworthy as you might imagine. The listing reveals that the game will cost £22.49 / $24.99 / AUD $37.50 and will be 3.1GB in size. Here's a new feature list:
Features
- The comeback of the legendary Streets of Rage series.
- Beautiful graphics fully hand-drawn animated by the studio behind Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap.
- Clean up Wood Oak City by yourself or with another friend online!
- Team up to 4 people offline for the first time and take the city back!
- Classic gameplay enhanced with brand-new mechanics.
- Soundtrack by a wide all-star line up of world-class musicians.
- Braised chicken everywhere.
- A dozen former Streets of Rage characters unlockable and playable in their original pixel versions.
- Play with the music of the previous Streets of Rage games.
- 12 unique stages.
We'll make sure to update this story if an official announcement is also made. Just a couple of months ago, it was revealed that the game will support two-player co-op online and, for the first time in the series, up to four-player local co-op.

Heads up beatemup
About time we get some release date info! Now bring on Pikmin 4!
looking forward to it
Awesome, really can't wait for this one
A must have for me!!
Hope they add DLC later on.
A game to look forward to! Streets of Rage really takes me back to the days I had a Sega Genesis and played a lot of co-op games with my little brother. We had so much fun playing Streets of Rage 2 together. Now that we're adults we don't play any games together. I stayed in the realm of retro style genres, indies, and Nintendo and he moved on to shooter type games and online multiplayer. He's now obsessed with League of Legends and mostly playing on PC with folks from else where. No more playing games with people you actually know irl.
Oh hell yes. This will be the second game I get in 2020. The other being Doom 64. Only 2 games but 1 perfect game and 1 sure to be awesome/perfect game.
About damn time.
That just took half an eternity to get basic information like this out there.
I don't care about hype this is the information that matters.
@DockEllisD
I remember when 3.1 gig was my entire hd.
Hope it’s 60fps
Cheaper than I'd hoped, and a small file size. Very nice. Will preorder asap.
Perfect timing, only a couple weeks out. Looking forward to playing this coop!
YAY! Excited to play this in just a couple of weeks!
As much as I've been looking forward to this game, I think I'll wait for a review or demo before making my decision.
@Steel76 I'm so gonna use "Go Straight" from SOR2 on loop, along with the boss theme "Never Return Alive".
@DockEllisD Its not just the LR tax that gets me, it's the waiting two or so extra months to get the game. I really wish a real publisher had picked this up. Almost criminal that they didnt.
Hmmmm... too expensive for a beat em up fo me, but will pick it up in a future sale if it gets reviewed well
Can't wait to get my hands on this. Love the beautiful new look and four player co-op will be tons of fun with my friends.
I've a horrible feeling it'll be average-to-good; it looks like it won't be that snappy. After playing River City Girls recently, I've realised the bar has been raised.
I'll still buy it though.
I hope the kangaroo is playable
I'm going to wait for a review and depending on that, possibly a sale. SOR2 is one of 2 Virtual Console games I got on my 3ds, I wish I was more hyped.
Yes, so getting this.
The retro sprites look amazing though
I will probably only play this in retro mode.
I’ve ordered this one physically... couldn’t resist.
I can't wait for this!
Really looking forward to playing this game! I spent so much time playing SOR, and SOR2 during my childhood. Remember renting both during summer weekends, and cleaning the streets up! 80's baby 90's kid till the death of me!😁🙌🏼
I don't understand why some developers seem to want to be so secretive over when a game is coming out.
Shame there is no Roo to unlock
Day 1 obviously so happy with all these characters and tracks. Bring it on x x x x x x x x
Plz stop, i can only get so "excited" for this game?!
@DockEllisD - https://nintendosoup.com/streets-of-rage-4-special-edition-announced-in-japan/
Day one. Maybe even a pre-order. My body is beyond ready!
@DockEllisD Glad it is not just me who does not want to pay far too much extra for a Limited Run copy. Living in the UK also adds postage and then a chance of having to pay import tax. £50+ later...
Streets of Rage 4 WAS a 'Must Buy'. I'm not sure what it is now as the chance to play as the retro characters and have the original music is the greatest video game news this year.
I've never liked the art direction in this and mixing the old and new graphics looks terrible in the video. I'll buy this because of the old OSTs and in the hope that we get a better looking sequel one day.
I'm so stoked for this game. Talk about a series that's been gone for way too long.
Going to have to wait on this now since it's so close to Trials of Mana 😣. On the bright side, I nabbed Sega genesis classics for switch which includes SoR 1-3. That'll keep me busy if i get jealous of people posting.
Now this is how you do a retro revival! If i wasn't in before I'm In now!
You know what else would be cool to release on switch? Double Dragon Neon! Don't listen to IGN though. That review they did was such a load of crap. It's like they hate beat em ups.
Now bring on SOR 4!
wow that sucks that they cannot confirm the release date, i seriously thought this game was finished from the gameplay footage that we got off of trailers and them talking about it -it looks done..i just am confused ;-;
I hope I don't have to do something ridiculous like beat the game on the hardest difficulty setting without using any continues to unlock these characters.
Okay now I'm excited! The new character models was my only big complaint about this game, now that they fixed that I am really looking forward to this!
Unfortunately the limited run physical is way expensive with shipping and you be waiting a long time for it. Going digital for this! Spend a lot of time playing SOR2 on Genesis
@Kabloop I have seen a number of people, and I'm among them, who don't need this to look exactly like the originals, yet don't like the art style they went with here. In my case, among other things, I don't like the thick black outlines on the characters and even some background elements. In fact, there was a video that showed some unused art from the game, and I saw versions of the characters that I thought looked much better. I also don't like some of the character designs. I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything, but the art style they went with is enough of a departure from previous games that it's natural that some might not think it's a good fit.
I like the way the art style looks for the new game, but I kinda wish they would just bring back Skate and Max with the updated art style instead of the retro look.
Nope still looks trash, the punch effects from the latest gameplay are still not fixed and the backgrounds even with retro mode are a horrible art style. why anyone would be hyped for this game I have no idea, even the music will not come close to SOR 1 and 2. some things are best left dead. I reakon this game will be a 6/10 at best.
@Mqblank yet the effects are still rubbish and the backgrounds will still be the awful art style.
and it has classic or new look so now i should hear crikets and not complants about how they changed the look and ruined it.. other thn that OMG THIS IS A MUST BUY GEM!!!!
Dozen characters huh; guess someone played Streets of Rage ReMake too. 😃
Definitely importing from Limited Run. Seems to be getting better with each post
Adding the classic versions of characters was a smart move considering that SoR Remake did the same and is a great way to please most fans. For me, those SoR2 sprites will always be top notch. I'll be curious to see if the classic versions also play differently or have subtle differences.
Also was that Shiva I saw in the character select? If they make it so he's fully playable and not semi broken the way he was in SoR3, that'll be really awesome. Some of the lighting effects on the sprites in that video are pretty cool too. Not sure if it'll be a day one for me, but I'm definitely getting it at some point.
@sik187 crickets? But the game doesn't have a "classic" look. They're including old player sprites, but the backgrounds and enemy sprites are still new. This doesn't solve anything.
For those hoping a real publisher would pick this up and being able to buy at retail....... I can safely say your patience will be rewarded.
I'd consider it a small shame that they didnt update or integrate the retro sprites into an amalgamation of the new style while translating some of the original details of the characters themselves. I kind of like how the fan remake years back attempted to and i thought what they came up with worked pretty nicely.
That said, for what it is, i'm glad that they at least came up with this. I'm a fan of the original (1st) game and glad to see it receive some representation. Also glad that they provided the catchy original tracks. It'll be interesting to see whether we have a choice to customise level tracks to our choosing or if its just a preset selection according to game.
@MarcianoMD there really needs to be some kind of physical outside the US as the shipping costs just make these way too expensive
I was in before,and now I’m in even deeper can’t wait x s x x x x
@KitsuneNight Rich kid eh? my first computer has 1.2Gig lol
