Atlus has confirmed that Shin Megami Tensei V will be getting a simultaneous global launch on Nintendo Switch in 2021, and has released fresh footage of the title.
A Switch exclusive which was first announced way back in 2017, the game will be joined by stablemate Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster, which arrives in the spring of next year.

Ok Persona 5 portbeggars
Listen I have one simple request
Please shut up and let me experience joy for the first time since 2017
If you don't just let me have this, I'm casting Mafreidyne on all of you
Never thought I'd see the words "simultaneous global launch" and "Atlus" in the same sentence, but here we are.
I'm excited for this.
I've never heard of Shin Megami Tensei, but i'm guessing by the name it's another JRPG I'm not interested in.
Developers: Should we make the lead protagonist male or female?
Atlus: Yes.
finally some info on this game.
@JokerCK you must be new to the whole "being an Atlus fan on Twitter" thing
Lets go ! Some quality rpg time
Finally! Been wondering when we'd get a new SMT.
Literally the best announcement of the year.
SMT is one of the best JRPG series in the industry.
@Slowdive Ditto. When this was announced in 2017, I knew I'd be buying a Switch. They couldn't have picked a better game to reel me in.
I’d be perfectly fine with this being a timed exclusive as long as Persona gets ported to Switch. Don’t misunderstand me I’m throughly thrilled for SMT 5 and Nocturne but P5 having as much exposure and tie in content on switch and as much as we’ve been screaming from the highest mountain for a port and support from inside the company why hasn’t it happened yet?
I just got SMT4 on 3DS so I can't wait to play through that after I beat TMS#Fe to get ready for this an 3HD coming!
@PrincessAzunyan A female protagonist? I dunno still looks anime male to me :/
Finally we got an release date. Hope the game will be worth the 4 year wait ^^
@PrincessAzunyan @mousieone
Could be male or female depending on how you look at the protagonist.
Long eyelashes and cute feminine face, could be female
Based on the clothes, the body and the history of SMT, could be male.
I'm voting for male personally. The clothes (male school uniform) body type, plus the fact that a lot of "anime protagonist" can have an androgynous face. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think a SMT game has a female main protagonist ? (in persona we have the remake of Persona 3 but the first game had male protagonist)
I would be very surprised if the main character was female, considering the other SMT games (but maybe ATLUS will make some changes with SMT 5 ?)
@Darlinfan
First party games I can understand being exclusive to one console but third party games are entirely different. Steam got P4 so it’s entirely likely we will see P5 on other platforms. You can’t say SMT is a Nintendo exclusive when Nocturne, the third numbered game, was in PS2 and not GameCube. Even now it’s not a switch exclusive remaster as it is also on PS4.
Really loved SMTIV on 3DS. I would have liked to see some gameplay, but I'm glad to hear more news about SMT V.
Finally!! I have been waiting for so long.
@PrincessAzunyan
That's male, he's wearing male uniform while other females wear female uniform
Defo getting it day one.
@PrincessAzunyan I’m always weary of that in anime games. I mean it’s not like most of the Atlus guys look super masculine anyway.
@NightMiroir SMT Nine let you pick your gender. However, it’s was an OG Xbox Japanese exclusive. (I don’t even know how this game exists)
Excellent news, this Mini Direct whatever is giving my what I was craving for years: more mainline SMT Good news, without reservation. The faithful got once more rewarded.
...but they can't get Persona 5 Scramble out the door.
Oooookay Atlus
@NightMiroir I think besides Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, the only game(s) to have a female protagonist is/are Japan only. SMT if... was one of them(female choice is canon), but I remember there being an old Windows one that also had a female protag as well. Maken X gets an honorary mention since it was made by the a lot of SMT and Persona team members, but it's a separate IP and universe entirely.
EDIT: Just SMT if... and Persona 2: EP from the looks of it.
Excited for this, though I gotta admit that I'd be a lot happier with something from the Persona sub-series. Here's hoping this sells well so they don't get cold feet about a main-line Persona game coming to Nintendo.
I’ve been waiting so long for this, hee-ho!
@GameOtaku Nocturne was on PS2 but that was literally the only time a numbered title was on a non-Nintendo platform, excluding SMT Nine which was Japanese exclusive on Xbox
People who say Atlus is being strongheld by Sony in terms of platform exclusivity don't really realize that pretty much 80-90% of the Megami Tensei franchise is either on Nintendo platforms or exclusive to Nintendo platforms, including literally every other numbered SMT entry and spinoffs like Devil Survivor, Soul Hackers, Majin Tensei and Last Bible
FINALLY! I've spent more time waiting for actual footage than I did on beating IV in neutral mode.
Well this is great, cautiously called this yesterday but didn’t see it happening. The fact this is a Nintendo exclusive balances out the whole no Persona thing imo, these games deserve a whole lot of love but they aren’t ‘cool’ like Persona so people won’t bother.
I have waited so long for this, SMT V is what made up my mind on getting a switch.
Never played any of the SMT games but this trailer has piqued my interest. I’ll check the reviews but I am tempted.
@TheFrenchiestFry
You forget that Soul Hackers was a remastered port or the Digital Devil Saga games which were on Sony. Heck even now we got a port of Catherine that wasn’t exclusive back then as it was on both Xbox and Sony platforms. Before the advent of social media (I’d bet everything I’ve got on it) gamers were complaining about SMT and Persona being exclusive and how they wanted games to have a longer reach especially third party games. With new avenues of communication being open and knowing the demand for these games on multiple systems is so big they would be fools to not port or remaster their games and give the masses what they want.
@PrincessAzunyan what female protag? the MC in this trailer looks like a feminine guy
@Incarna IV and apocalypse had english dub. don't see why V won't
@TheFrenchiestFry Been saying this for years. A good 70%+ of Atlus' properties are either Nintendo exclusive or have released on Nintendo hardware. And, with SMT, four of the five mainline games launched as Nintendo exclusives. They're more a Nintendo developer than anything else.
Of course, if people cross their arms and ignore everything that isn't Persona 5 because of some bizarre entitlement complex, that might change in the future. Who knows.
Finally, some good flipping food
@GameOtaku Soul Hackers was the remaster/Western localization of the second game in the classic Devil Summoner sub series which was released exclusively in Japan in 1997 for the Sega Saturn and then ported to PlayStation
So technically the 3DS version was the first ever time the game saw a worldwide release
Digital Devil Saga is a completely unrelated spinoff which was PS2 exclusive back when that was Atlus' go to platform for major titles like Nocturne and Persona 3/4
@Ralizah My personal hope is that SMT V does for mainline what Persona 5 did for the Persona series in greatly expanding the audience for the main series and cultivating some form of a mainstream audience given how much of a phenomenon P5 was at launch
@TheFrenchiestFry Me too. And despite the obnoxious whining about Persona 5 not getting ported, I think there's reason to be hopeful. There has been a consistent awareness of SMT V online since it was first announced, and, honestly, there's not really a bigger or hotter platform to launch it on at this point. If SMT is going to have any chance to expand its audience, it's going to be on Switch.
Really, really excited to see more of this. I'm expecting gameplay at TGS now.
lol The game is at least a year out, but it feels like christmas. I'm so happy.
@Ralizah Gameplay at TGS is almost a given at this point. This game will definitely make some sort of impact due to it launching on the fastest selling of the three main platforms, in addition to being aided by a simultaneous worldwide launch. I just personally hope that there is enough of an audience that won't bicker about it not having social sim elements or romancing options. I personally always preferred the more straightforward but difficult gameplay mainline offered.
Strange Journey is still my fav, but looking forward to this.
@PrincessAzunyan I remember reading somewhere that Atlus doesn't want female protagonists in their SMT/Persona games because of the overly male fandom to which I say why not Persona has plenty of women who love the series.
@TheFrenchiestFry
Problem is though to get the most reach it needs to be multiplat. The biggest complaints I’ve seen on Atlus West Facebook page is how inferior the switch is to the competition. If P5 would come to the switch it could boost sales of both seeing how popular P5 is. The demand is strong for a port and the majority of those don’t have multiple gaming consoles. Outside of first party games exclusives are a poor decision. If RE4 was only a GameCube exclusive I doubt it would’ve made such an impact so naturally Capcom ported to PS2 which was the dominant force that gen.
@TheFrenchiestFry I enjoy modern Persona games, but mainline SMT blows that series away. The combat, dungeon crawling, atmosphere, etc. are all so much better.
I still want Persona 5 on Switch. I'll still buy it if it's announced. But this is the announcement I've been craving. And Nocturne makes it even sweeter. With voice acting!
@GameOtaku Third party exclusives in terms of Atlus are a tricky area considering Atlus likely just puts Persona on PlayStation because they're used to having that audience and it hasnt significantly backfired on them yet. They've received backlash for stuff like P5 being PS exclusive, but it's not like the sales P5 accumulated are a reflection of that. It just does well enough that they feel comfortable sticking to the status quo. I guess they just view spinoffs as a way to court people on other platforms into buying PlayStations for the numbered entries. Spinoffs like Digital Devil Saga have appeared on PlayStation platforms and it's gotten people to buy Nintendo consoles for the other stuff as well. I personally think where accessibility is concerned, I think putting the older PS2 titles like Nocturne on modern platforms was the way to go because they're far less accessible without emulation.
@Ralizah P5 on Switch would be cool, but the only way I'll be convinced to purchase it at this point is if it's P5 Royal and not some sort of Classic re-release of the vanilla game like what they did with Catherine on Steam. Full Body being on Switch gives me hope that that isn't the case, but considering how well P4G is already doing on Steam, I see Persona on PC as a far more likely outcome at this point compared to Persona on Switch. I'd personally be satisfied with more remasters of the PS2 era games like Digital Devil Saga or even the DS content like Devil Survivor and Strange Journey.
Another reason why best not to be stuck with only one system. Assuming, Not getting P6 on PS4/PS5 anytime soon, so glad this is still coming To Switch..
But I thought cutscenes trailers during online presentations where nothing to get excited about 😉
one my fav game series of all time hope they remaster all them and the ds games as well. love the setting and the demons
I'm glad the direct had at least one interesting enough announcement
I turned on my phone, and couldn’t believe my eyes!
It's about time they came through! Having this and Nocturne Remaster announced are PERFECT. Thanks, Atlus!
Fantastic news, wasn't expecting SMT V until 2022. SMT III remaster and V next year? Very excited.
SMT V protagonist, Demi-fiend, or Raidou needs to be in Smash now.
this made my day, and i have not even watched the trailer yet!
Trailer needs more Mara. But seriously this is great news. I've only played P5 and Digital Devil Saga so more SMT is more than welcome.
@BRAINFOX I didn't get to play much of it but I remember Persona 3 Portable on the PSP adding in a female protagonist
Can anybody tell me what the differences are between SMT and Persona? I’ve only played the Persona games (4 & 5).
@JokerCK I can't blame anyone for wanting a port of Persona, but the nonstop spamming of the comments section about it does get annoying. Almost as bad as F-Zero fans throwing a fit every time a futuristic racer is revealed and it's not F-Zero.
@Aronin I've only played SMT, but I've talked to people that played Persona. What I get from the comparisons is that Persona puts more emphasis on character relationships. Also, the main characters are teenagers and there's more JRPG silliness. SMT tends to be very dark and serious.
@Aronin SMT is a more traditional JRPG experience than persona. The characters are in a post apocalyptic world where there is traditionally a more good vs evil/save the world storyline.
Without the life sim elements that Persona has, I've always found the stories in the SMT games better paced and it feels like a more cohesive world. I personally like the press turn battle system more of the SMT games and they're typically more difficult than the Persona games.
They are both great series.
@Slowdive its like anime fans trashing manga fans SMT is the reason why persona exists
@Mando44646 ok a glorifed dynasty warriors rehash over a game people waited 8 YEARS FOR? you persona fans are the WORST
@nmanifold well.
It's basically pokemon but with creatures from RL myths/folklore/urban legends from across the world as your monsters, generally in supernatural post-apocalypse setting(expect deaths of npc you meet) and most games let you punch god or Satan as the final boss.... or both of you want to take the good old "humanity ***** yeah" path also offered in most games.
They can be fairly grindy at times though.
@Aronin Shin Megami Tensei is a long running series with a bunch of spin-offs, one of which is Persona. Mainline Megten games don't have social sim elements like Persona. They're more straightforward, challenging RPGs. However, that isnt to say they're entirely free of player choice
I'm happy that they didn't cancel this game. I really enjoyed SMTIII Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga on ps2. My question though is that, there's nothing here that's really wow-ing me. Where's all that P5 money and production value for SMT?
Maybe I wanted something closer to a 3d Devil Summoner or Strange Journey, actually even the 3ds SMT trailers looked more exciting. I might be judging it too harshly but this was quite a wait.
Think I might replay SMT IV in preparation at some point. Truely fantastic announcement.
@Incarna i can't see why they wouldn't. considering SMT III Remastered is getting a dub. maybe, it's too soon to reveal it right now?
@westman98 if only I could say you were false lol
@Aronin It's pretty different than persona. the only thing that remains the same is fusing the monsters into better ones. smt is more dark than persona is. smt also let's you contoller the player and the three monsters you have summon in the game. (except for the first two games, i haven't played enough of SMT 1 and 2 to say that it does that.)
I Recommend getting SMT III first if you haven't tried it yet and want to get into the series.
@TheFox Your toxic BS and trolling is being noted. Keep it up. We don't need people like you here.
@PrincessAzunyan I saw the character as female too, but he(?) is wearing a gakuran. I welcome a female protagonist while hoping that they use such a change to introduce something different to the series, in story or at least style.
Sweet, a reason for me to finally give in and buy a Switch. Been waiting 2 years for SMT V, Nocturne is just icing on the cake.
Not a fan of it being a Nintendo Switch since the game only maxes out at 1920 lines of horizontal resolution which is not enough anymore!
