Re: Feature: Best Nintendo Wii Games

Onion

Glad to see Little King's Story made it on the list. Shame it wasn't a little higher though. Other than Wario Land: Shake It being excluded, I think this is a solid list. Kinda hoped to see Klonoa on there, too. I think Animal Crossing: City Folk was excluded as well. There's a lot of great Wii games, too many for a mere top 50.

Re: Review: Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty - A So-So Remake Of A Legendary Game

Onion

I noticed the same thing when I replayed this. I had the game as a kid and loved it on PS1, then later on I bought it on the PS1 again when I was older to replace my lost copy. I still felt it held up. Then a few years later I played the remake and I definitely didn't feel it was as good as the original, though I couldn't quite put my finger on why. I wondered if maybe the game hadn't aged well. I think this review may explain why I disliked it and after watching some in-depth videos on it, I have a much deeper understanding of why. The remake is visually appealing, but it ended up sapping away much of the charm of the original game. This is a prime example of why remakes aren't always better than remasters.

With that being said, the original game's minimalist approach may not be to everyone's liking to begin with, so mileage may vary. Some people may prefer the remake over the original.

I'll have you know that I'm an onion, I have no gender.

Seriously though... Judging by the exchanges you're having with others on this subject, I'm going to assume you're not very smart so go ahead and make assumptions about my gender if that's what makes you feel good. My gender has nothing to do with my ability to recognize a silly commercial and have a laugh at it rather than have an aneurysm about it. Your entire post and every post you've made since on the subject is basically "no ur wrong" with no coherent point to be made, followed by ignorant assumptions. I would argue there's something wrong with someone who makes a dozen posts in a row telling everyone they're wrong rather than simply making one large post, but expecting that of you would probably be asking too much. Replying to multiple people in one comment would probably fry your brain.

I've always loved the Wii and my fondness for the console has only grown over the years, so voting on this was a lot of fun.

@erv
If it makes you feel any better, I gave Little King's Story a vote as well. Such an underrated gem!

Re: Random: Thanks Fire Emblem, Mother 3 Is Now Trending On Social Media (Again)

Onion

@PBandSmelly
This is honestly what I hate about the Mother/Earthbound community, they can never just let another game have a moment. Seiken Densetsu 3 gets an English localization for example and the Mother fanbase starts screaming "WHERE IS MOTHER 3" and "should have been mother 3!". For SD3 it actually got pretty toxic with people saying they hope the game doesn't sell/fails and so on.. I think a lot of people do it as a joke but the Mother fanbase comes off as so bitter sometimes that it goes beyond jokes and memes. At this point I wish Nintendo would just give them Mother 3 to shut them up, and I say this as someone who doesn't even care about this release of Fire Emblem. I prefer the FE3 version which has Book 2 included.

Normally I love it when people are campaigning for a Japanese game to get an official translation but the Mother fanbase has definitely become pretty toxic about it.

Re: Feature: Best Nintendo 64 Games

I feel like most of these games are ranked way too low, but then again this is a top 50 games, so I guess I should be grateful so many of my favorites are on here. But seriously, Ogre Battle 64 needs to be higher.

Re: Sega Surprises Everyone By Releasing A Canned Golden Axe Sequel, Including The Original Devs

Onion

Judging by how the Altered Beast reboot and Golden Axe: Beastrider went, I can believe that the management at Sega had no clue what to do with their retro franchises and didn't want sequels to them, rather they just wanted to borrow the titles and try out new things. Golden Axe: Beastrider was more or less just God of War. A really bad one.

Sega is well-known for making incredibly bad decisions so none of this is a shock to me. Given the situation they were in, the developers actually pulled off a decent prototyope. I would have been curious to see what a finished product would have been like.

Re: Soapbox: 10 Years On, Kirby's Epic Yarn Is Still The Pink Puffball's Finest Outing

Onion

Never understood why anyone liked this game and as I understand it, the majority of the fanbase didn't much care for it. The insanely easy nature of it earned it the nickname "Epic Yawn" and for good reason, it's mind-numbing in how utterly boring it is. You really can't lose at this game. It's definitely not Kirby's finest outing. The fact the author of the article mentioned finding other Kirby games "frustrating" and admits to not liking them speaks volumes for why they would like what is essentially Baby's First Platformer and a game that was never a Kirby game to begin with. Which is fine, nothing wrong with that to be honest, you don't have to like Kirby, but it shed light on why someone would think a game like Epic Yarn is his "finest outing".

This is the epitome of a baby's game, something that the Kirby series has been accused of in the past, but in this case it's a well-deserved moniker. The only good thing it really has going for it are the visuals which are definitely great, and it has a nice soundtrack. The gameplay is set up in such a way that it's basically impossible to die or lose. Unlike previous Kirby games where there are unlockable Expert modes, there's nothing here for a hardcore gamer to enjoy. I don't even think there's much here for most casual gamers.

Maybe someday I'll go back to this game and find that it's an underrated masterpiece that I somehow just didn't understand, but I doubt it. I'd much rather play Superstar or Kirby's Adventure. For that matter any of his excellent 3DS outings. Or the GBA games such as Amazing Mirror. Basically any Kirby game but this one.

Re: It Looks Like Hackers Are Already Cheating In Super Mario Bros. 35

Onion

Hackers are definitely in the game and it's a bit disheartening. I've witnessed cheating in my own matches but it seems rare.

@Fazermint
It's going beyond the rankings, they're getting max coins at the start of the match which absolutely gives them a massively unfair advantage. I saw an example of this on youtube where a player just kept using items without running out of coins.. and another where a hacker got 5 rows of coins on his screen within seconds of starting the match. That's basically unlimited time and unlimited items. Imagine just being able to spin the roulette for endless starmen. If it were just the rankings, you'd be right. The way the article is written makes it sound like it's purely a leaderboard problem but it's a bit more than that. Judging by the titles of some of the deleted youtube hacking videos, the hacks also allow you to do things like swim anywhere, kill other players, etc in addition to unlimited coins. So this is definitely a bigger issue than leaderboards.

EDIT: I forgot to point out that the way this hack seems to work is that, by demonstrated in the youtube video I've watched (and backed up by others on reddit), if the hacker still manages to die, someone else can actually obtain the hackers coins. I saw a speedrunner beat a hacker on youtube and he got all of the hackers coins, it was pretty hilarious. This makes me wonder how many of those leader positions are actually hackers or just people who beat a hacker and got an insane amount of coins. They're probably all hackers though since the way the "money pot" in this game works is you don't get all of the coins but a fraction. The number for wiping out a hacker seems to be 25k, but someone on reddit mentioned getting over 50k by beating a hacker. When this happens it also impacts the level of the player, as the speedrunner went from level 97 to like 35* in a single match because of that hacker.

Re: Feature: Jankenteam On Reviving Alex Kidd For A Whole New Generation Of Players

Onion

Pretty much hated every Alex Kidd game, especially the one where they made you play paper, rock, scissors to finish a level. Absolutely dumb idea to have your progression decided by a game of chance. The only one I consider even remotely decent is Shinobi World.

@Sszx09 I second the Illusion series remakes, especially if they port over the one that they made for Castle of Illusion over to Switch. World of Illusion remake would be awesome! The SMS Illusion games were nice too.

Re: Random: Super Mario Sunshine Trick Lets You Safely Jump Off Those Pesky Bloopers

Onion

Of all the troublesome shines, I can honestly say this one never troubled me. As I jumped onto the pier and grabbed the shine I did think to myself "it'd suck if I messed that jump up" but it's a pretty easy jump to make. Now the pachinko shine and the chucking shine are the ones that I remember being the worst and I haven't gotten to those yet. Just 100%'d Bianco Hills and on my way to Ricco Harbor next to finish it up, so I'm sure I'll encounter those shines soon.

Re: Random: Switch Owners Are Discovering Just How Frustrating Super Mario Sunshine Can Be

Onion

Pretty much a well-known fact that Sunshine was rushed out. I mean, even if you aren't aware of the game's development, the fact they replaced so many Shines with blue coins should be a dead giveaway. There's also some really frustrating shines in the game that basically require luck over skill.

Despite that, I've been enjoying my return to it immensely due to the controls being improved and the screen space no longer being so cluttered. While I enjoyed returning to Mario 64 and getting all the stars again, I actually found Mario 64 to be the more frustrating of the two games at least so far. My opinion may change when I get to the pachinko shine but getting 100 coins in Tick Tock Clock and Rainbow Ride were by far the hardest things I've done in a Mario game to date. I don't think Sunshine's BS Shines are going to even remotely compare to that.

Re: Random: Some 3D All-Stars Players Aren't Happy About The Visible Debug Cubes In Super Mario Sunshine

Onion

I haven't gotten around to seriously playing Sunshine yet so I don't know how bad the problem actually is, but it sounds like just more typical internet outrage culture nonsense. For those mentioning the pandemic (not to mention the wildfires in the US), I think that may actually be partly why we're seeing so much of the "outrage". People are stressed out to the max right now and even little things are probably setting them off. At least that's how I'm choosing to look at it. I don't even think the guys who found this intended for anyone to be angry and just thought it was interesting, if the article itself is any indication.

Like I said though I don't know how widespread the problem is in Sunshine. If this is present in every secret platforming level then I can see the reason for the frustration, but judging by everything I've seen about this game thus far, I'm assuming this is a minor thing that rarely even shows up.

On the other hand I do agree that more effort could have/should have been spent on the collection, but Nintendo likely has bigger priorities right now what with Prime 4, Age of Calamity, BotW2, etc all being worked out. I've always assumed this was simply something Nintendo threw together at the last minute to celebrate Mario's 35th anniversary and fill in the dead months with no major releases. I wouldn't be surprised if Mario 64 itself was a late inclusion due to the lack of 1080p or widescreen.

With all that being said though I'm absolutely loving my romp through Mario 64 and what little I saw of Sunshine and Galaxy was fantastic. Sunshine in particular almost looks like a brand new game and the lack of forced waggle in Galaxy is simply lovely. The package most certainly could be better but it is what it is. Outside of emulation and homebrew this is probably the best way to enjoy these games right now. Mario 64 looks far sharper than it does on an UltraHDMI modded N64 and the Pro controller (for me at least) is 100 times more comfortable than an N64 controller. I found the controls in Sunshine and Galaxy were greatly improved as well so for me this is a great looking and playing collection.

@SalvorHardin

I wasn't being critical of the homebrew community (the "almighty" comment was just sarcasm and not meant to be an insult or a jab), just pointing out that the results are not perfect. I'm well aware of the difference between the two. John made it sound like it was up and running at 60fps without a hitch and I'm just pointing out that is currently not true.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry's Technical Analysis Of Super Mario 3D All-Stars

Onion

One thing I want to point out is that John is neglecting to mention that while Sunshine has been made to run at 60fps by the homebrew community, it has introduced a lot of problems, glitches, errors, etc.. So it's more like they've achieved it but with imperfect results. I'm sure they'll iron out those flaws but still, it's not as easy as john is making it sound. Even the almighty homebrew community is struggling to make 60fps Sunshine work.

Re: Feature: Video Game Vocab To Spark Forum Wars - Ten Of Gaming's Trickiest Terms

Onion

I'm guilty of being wound-up by "metroidvania" and "rougelike" for the reasons mentioned in the article already. For me, they've simply become meaningless buzzwords. The latter especially because I've found that people call everything a rougelike even if it has nothing much to do with the genre. For me, the term invokes the mental image of games in the vein of Shiren the Wanderer, so when I see anything with any semblance of randomness being called that, I do admittedly get annoyed. For example I don't really see Darkest Dungeon as a rougelike, but people insist that's what it is. For metroidvania I'm finding it's often used a catch-all phrase for anything the slightest open game play. Ducktales has been called a metroidvania before for example and I can't even begin to fathom how anyone can see that as being remotely like Metroid, but I digress.

See, you've gone and wound me up now! Well played, Nintendolife.

Re: Review: Super Mario 3D All-Stars - Three Of Mario's Greatest Adventures Come To Switch

Onion

I'm curious how Galaxy works with the Pro Controller. Does the cursor simply disappear or do you still have to control it somehow? Does the right analog move it around? I always personally hated the cursor and felt it was distracting, so it'd be cool if using the Pro somehow got rid of it but I doubt that would be the case. Judging by one of the screenshots, it looks like it's controlled via the right analog and you can just fling the cursor away where it's not blocking your view, which is what the person playing in the screenshot appears to have done. If so that's a nice improvement already. I can just move it out of my face for a while instead of having it always there bobbing around like a pest.

Re: Video: Super Mario 3D All-Stars Looks Miles Better Than The Originals, And Here's The Proof

Onion

Aside from Mario 64 not being in 1080p and widescreen, these all look pretty great. I'm especially eager to see how Galaxy will look in HD. It was always such a tragedy that Galaxy was released before HD was standard. Now the game will truly shine in 1080p glory.

@electrolite77 is also correct that the leap from composite video to this would be even higher. The video is using HD modded stuff like UltraHDMI. Comparing it to the standard composite video we used back in the day it's literally a world of difference.

Definitely don't see the big outcry. Looking forward to getting my onion paws on the game friday and checking it out for myself.
