We're often amazed by the talent within the cosplay scene. Recently, we saw that US-based cosplayer Akellyz was featured on Gamer Network's new Cosplay Central website for his Borderlands-style depiction of Mario himself.
The cosplayer wore the outfit during events in 2019 and was even crowned winner at New York Comic Con taking home a cool $3,000 for his efforts.
When quizzed about the outfit by Cosplay Central, Akellyz had the following to say:
Whenever you play a videogame, it allows you to sumerge on a new world. Thanks to cosplay, I was able to bring those worlds and characters into the real life. Mario’s Cosplay is inspired in a realistic and post-apocaliptic Mario bros. The creation of this cosplay took around one year. Starting with design, wardrobe and make up to continue with material selection, sawing process, prosthetics elaboration and props.
You can view the full gallery of images on the Cosplay Central website.
With a distinct lack of high profile events this year we're sure that the talents of Akellyz and others will only come back with even more impressive outfits once 'normal life' resumes.
It's a bold look for Super Mario, don't you think? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

He needs to sumerge on English class.
"...material selection, sawing process, prosthetics elaboration.."
Kinda sounds like he targeted and then amputated somebody for his cosplay, but it looks great so who cares?
If Sony made a Mario game, this is what he'd look like...
@yuwarite I want Sony to make a Mario game now
I just want mario character in borderlands on switch now!
Only if Sony got their hands on mario..... thank goodness this isn’t real lol
Tbh live action Mario is pretty much the last thing I'd want right now, but if you're going to do it, then this is probably as good as it's gonna get. Great effort!
The Order: 1985
It looks so good at first I didn't think it was a real person but a filter applied over what they were wearing
I fear he's played too much PlayStation lol. In all seriousness, not my cup of tea but very well done! I can appreciate the work he's put in to it.
No, thank you. I do appreciate his efforts but this looks horribly fugly to me.
Mario's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Coin
While cool indeed, that is NOT a cel-shaded look.
This isn't how you'd handpaint shadows on a celluloid sheet in traditional animation.
Yeah as Pod says this isn’t cel-shading BUT it is cool! It looks more like Borderlands visual rendering, which is also commonly mistaken as cel-shaded but isn’t. But still super cool!
Not sure what all the “if Sony made Mario” comments are about either. People couldn’t be more off the mark with that. Sony both makes and publishes games like Ratchet & Clank, Concrete Genie, Wattam & Dreams to name a few. If you don’t know them go and look them up, and play them if you can. Sony has a huge variety in visuals in their games. Arguably more so than Nintendo.
Sony doesn't really make kids games anymore, nobody would buy them. Look what happened to all the ones they did. And thank the gods, cause they were horrible at kids games. They would have killed Mario after 3.
@NikHogan 7 page 1up trick
A little too over-designed for my tastes, but pretty cool regardless.
Dude needs a lesson in proofreading, grammar and using correct terms. This is not cel-shaded and if he was inspired by Borderlands, he should just say so.
Well that is just very impressive.
There's so much going on with this headline.
Thank god! I always knew something was missing in my life. I can't wait to play "Meth Mario." I wonder if you can run around screaming incoherently at random Toads and eat Bowser's face off.
@Dtbahoney hur hur
