I used the Glaive when it first debuted but since then I felt like it kept getting worse and worse. I'm not entirely sold on the fact this isn't the case with Rise either, so I've been sticking to Longswords and sometimes switch out to the Greatsword, which was my original main weapon before I switched to the Longsword.
Yeah, no. Nowhere near one of the best Zeldas. I couldn't stand this game for years due to the absurd touch screen controls. Only recently have I been able to get any enjoyment out of it thanks to a patch that lets you play the game with the dpad and face buttons. With that patch applied I got a little more mileage out of it but ehh. Don't really see how anyone can consider this anywhere near one of the best Zelda games unless they've played very few Zeldas. Between this and the pushing of Skyward Sword, I feel like NL is reaching way too much with these articles. But opinions I guess.
"Worst" is pretty debatable. I'd argue that the pachinko games are the absolute worst. Depending on who you ask, the N64 game is the worst. Castlevania Judgment has the worst art design. Lords of Shadow 1/2 and Adventure are strong candidates too.
That aside, yeah this has been released a few times on Switch before. It's not a great game but the music is killer stuff.
In all fairness I've been seeing several people on twitter talk about how much they enjoy the game. While it's obvious there's something fishy about the reviews mentioned, there's people who really like this game and have been defending it quite a bit.
Good to know I'm not the only one out there who put over 200 hours into Fire Emblem: Awakening. But yeah folders would be kinda nice. I miss themes. Also the shop is so lifeless compared to the 3DS and Wii U shop. Actually, it's pretty lifeless in comparison to the Wii Shop Channel too. Would it kill them to at least put some music in there to make browsing it a little more enjoyable? Also what's with the shop still having input lag?
I love the Switch but there's a number of things it does worse than previous consoles.
It's hard but most of the difficulty comes from critical hits and enemy reinforcement spawns, both of which are out of the player's control. This can be mitigated with the use of the rewind feature which basically does an automatic save state every turn so you can rollback to any turn you want. The game also has a lot of garbage characters that aren't worth using, bad growth rates (though FE2 is worse in this regard), and characters who don't promote such as Barst, Julian, etc. All characters have 0 RES too so mages can wreck you. If a mage is fast enough to double, that'll pretty much kill most units. (RIP Cain from my first run.)
On the upside, Marth is actually really good in this game and the stat boosters are beyond broken, often giving +6 and such boosts. You can easily get through the game by mostly using Marth and spamming any stat boosters you find on him, especially boots. The AI also tends to prioritize Marth so you can win a lot of maps by simply parking him in a good defensive position and let him go to town. There's other good characters such as Jeorge, Ogma, Cain+Abel, Caeda, etc.
It's harder than both the Genesis Shining Force games but if you keep a relatively small army and use the rewind+bookmark feature, it's perfectly manageable. If you can beat the original Shining Force then you should be able to handle the original Fire Emblem.
On a semi-related note, I love Guntz from Shining Force.
Despite being a hardcore fan of the series, Fire Emblem on Switch is not a great release. While they added some admittedly nice features such as bookmarks (save states) and a rewind-like feature, the game's visuals are way too dark and there's an odd audio crackle that frequently occurs. The game itself is decent enough and it's a cheap download, but given the issues it has I don't think missing out on it should rob anyone of their sleep. For the most part it's more enjoyable on basically any other device.
With that being said I still managed to find enjoyment with this release and it was really nice to see it get an official translation. I played it all the way through for what it's worth, I just wish more care had been taken in the porting process. It's clearly running on some sort of outdated emulator. Hopefully someone will find a way to dump the rom of this game so that once it goes down, people can at least download the rom and check out the official translation. It's actually a pretty nice translation and not just a direct copy of Shadow Dragon like I assumed it'd be.
I've been loving it as well and the Palamute is such a great addition. I love zipping around the map on one of these good boys and chasing down monsters as they flee in terror is awesome. When I discovered I could sharpen my weapon atop the Palamute, I knew I couldn't ever leave on a hunt without one. Formerly tedious gathering quests/sessions are now much faster and much more fun since I can zoom around the map and quickly grab whatever I'm after. This in addition to the fact they plainly mark what you need to collect on the map makes for far faster and more enjoyable missions. I did drag a bit on my first two missions but after I got accustomed to the changes, I found myself quickly completing mining runs and other things that formerly would have taken 20 minutes. And I haven't even mentioned the wirebugs yet and how much they assist in mobility. Even better is how it retains all the little conveniences from MH World while bringing back features from Generations such as Palico skills. It really does feel like they mixed the older games in with the newer ones, resulting in a more enjoyable experience overall.
While this game is nowhere near as big and impressive as MH World, it makes up for it by allowing you to traverse each map in faster and more entertaining ways. Also can I just say how much I love Kamura as a hub? Seriously I love the Japanese aesthetics and music here. While MH World felt very western, this game embraces how Japanese it is without any hesitation and is all the more awesome for it. My only complaint is that it does feel a tad easy-ish right now but that may be because I'm experienced with the series. I suspect the later monsters (and the inevitable DLC add ons) will kick me in the onion a bit more.
Interesting list, I never knew Japan loved X so much. Kind of a shame to see so little love for the pre-playstation era characters. I'd have thought that Terra would be on there considering how popular 6 seems to be.
For me personally...
FFVII
FFVIII
FFX
FFXV
FFV
FFVI
FFIX
FF
FFII (Actual FF2, not 4.)
FFIII (Same as above, not 6)
FFXII is a good runner up and if spin-offs were allowed I'd rank FFT pretty up.
As far as characters go I don't really have a big preference there. Cloud is iconic but I can't say he's my favorite. I was a bigger fan of Barret and Yuffie more so than Cloud. If I had to pick an FF character I'd probably say Squall simply for how awesome his weapon is, plus the fact I mained him in Dissidia.
I've only been playing for 2 hours and I've already had the game just completely lock up on me too. I really hope this isn't indicative of what's to come.
I really like the fighting games in this collection as well as the 2nd Metal Slug, but I'm not so keen on the the first Metal Slug or Dark Arms. I found myself going back to SNK Vs Capcom and SNK Gals numerous times, and Metal Slug 2nd has a lot of replay value.
If they do a volume 2, I'm hoping to see the card games or Sonic Pocket. Come on Sega, make it happen.
With that being said, it's overpriced for what it is.
This horse has been beaten to a pulp. At this point I'll be glad when March 31st is here so you will shut up about it. Although knowing NL they'll probably find a way to do another dozen articles about how much they miss Mario 35 and how Nintendo killed their cat.
Been into this series since the PS2, though I had a love-hate relationship with it on PSP due to the controls. Once Tri came out, I officially fell in love with MH and haven't looked back. Once the games started using a 2nd stick for camera control and made the hitboxes less ridiculous, the games got better.
Despite being a hardcore Mega Man fan, I never truly got into the Battle Network series outside of maybe the first game. I dabbled in Network 5 a little. I should give this spin off series another chance sometime. I'd love to see them bundle all the games into a collection, actually. It'd be great for people like me who don't own them all.
I already got them all, but this could be nice for future playthrough. Nice to see things like this coming out though, this is one of the more annoying parts of the game.
I personally love this style and Wind Waker is one of my favorite Zelda games of all time, easily in my top 5. Unfortunately, I know people to this day who have the "graphic style ruined the game) attitude and I just don't get it. I remember the outrage all too well and I agree that it was just sad. People wanted a "realistic" Zelda and shunned Wind Waker for being "kiddy". The irony is they would get their wish with TP but I've met far more Wind Waker fans than Twilight Princess fans. As far as I can tell, WW has a far larger following, or at least the more vocal one. The HD version on Wii U is literally the reason I bought a Wii U.
Yeah that pretty much settles it for me. Despite looking forward to it, this is gonna be a pass for me until they get the game patched up. This game went from "day one purchase" to "wait for a sale". Gonna have to echo the Stardew sentiment. I haven't played Stardew since the patches dropped on Switch and PC, this might be a good time to jump back in and see what's new.
Sonic Brotherhood has no business on this list. I love the idea of a Sonic RPG but it just didn't work. Dark Dawn was okay, I guess. Shadow Dragon's placement i understandable. I would personally rank Covenant of the Plume a little higher. Radiant Historia being absent seems strange, but I assume the 3DS remake knocked it out of the rankings. Haven't played Partners in Time but I heard it' s infamously bad and never hear any praise for it. I still need to play Bowser's Inside Story, what little I played of it was pretty cool. Not sure why Chrono Trigger DS is so low. Decent list overall though, some of the entries were a bit odd though and I'm surprised there's no SMT entries like Devil Survivor or Strange Journey, but those have remakes on 3DS anyway.
Good list, I'm especially fond of the FE Gaiden remake. I've played most of the games on here and they're all solid. I just recently started Q2 and it's a fine jrpg as well. I have no idea what'll happen to the Etrian games now that we've moved on to Switch.
Wasn't too long ago I recall the big complaint being "too many sequels", so I guess now we've moved on to "Too many remakes/ports/remasters".
The thing is, Nintendo HAS put forth innovative ideas and creative ventures. Some like Codename Steam failed. We've also seen plenty of successful new ideas with Breath of the Wild, Mario Oddy, Three Houses, ARMs, Ring Fit, etc. For the most part I think this is a fair balance and it seems like Nintendo does this every so often to fill in the dead zones between major releases. I guess it boils down to whether or not you'd rather have a few remakes/ports or have no new releases at all. Skyward Sword HD is clearly meant to keep us busy till BotW2 for example. Otherwise the complaint would be too few releases.
For me personally, I don't mind it. Judging by how well 3D World is selling, I imagine a lot of people are okay with it. It lets people who never got to experience the original get a chance to try it out on a platform they're more likely to own, while old onions like me who enjoy playing an older game with some extras are happy to double dip. For example I've been diving into the Blizzard Collection and the Capcom Arcade Stadium despite owning a means of playing most of the games. This time around I actually stuck with Ghosts n Goblins long enough to beat it (twice) and have developed a stronger appreciation for it. The rewind feature in particular helped me get through some of the tougher parts and practice the bosses. If anything I wish there were more ways to enjoy past titles. I'd love to see Sega release some sort of Dreamcast or Saturn compilation for example. If I have any complaint with this trend it's that we tend to get the same games over and over, such as with basically anything Sega releases. Less Sega Genesis/Mega Drive ports and more 32X, Saturn, or Dreamcast ports.
Then again I'm one of those weirdos who wants a Super NT even though I have an SNES hooked up to a CRT so... yeah.
Speaking of which, all this talk about Wario makes me want a collection of the Wario Land games. Despite owning them all, I'd gladly double dip. Also, Wario Land Shake it would be a nice bonus.
Honestly I think simply bringing back more of their forgotten franchises like they did with SoR4 would go a long way. Sega seems to think the only IP they own is Sonic.
For example, how about remastering the entire Shining Force 3 saga and releasing them on Switch or... basically anything. Remaster Skies of Arcadia. Maybe do a Golden Axe 4? Do something besides Sonic.
I disagree with some of the criticisms here and IMO this is a fantastic collection well worth the asking price. I do wish they'd let you turn off the borders in the Definitive Editions of Lost Vikings and Blackthorne, and I find it odd that Rock and Roll Racing lacks the same save feature as the other two. These are minor nitpicks though and could easily be corrected with a patch. I also miss Lost Vikings 2 but Blizzard did not actually develop that game and only worked on the SNES port. Beam Software handled Lost Vikings 2 otherwise. RPM Racing is also absent but they likely felt no one really wanted to play that game.
Overall though this is a solid collection of games and I'd personally give it a 9/10. 7/10 is a bit low but opinions are opinions. Also, Blackthorne > Flashback. Fite me.
EDIT: A lazy way to get around the save issue in RnR is to go to the options menu where the password is displayed and take a screenshot so you can continue later. Not the most elegant solution but it'll do if you need to stop. It's not a particularly long game anyway.

This is a great idea for a game. Definitely gonna give this a try.
Re: Feature: The 10 Best SNES RPGs
Still love Ogre Battle to this day. Another game I'd love to see on SNES Online.
Re: Anniversary: It's Super Mario RPG's 25th Birthday!
I'd love to see this come to SNES Online. One of my favorite games of all time.
Re: Review: Blizzard Arcade Collection - Dig Into The Vaults Of The Creator Of Warcraft And Overwatch
Re: Japan's 35 Best-Selling Switch Games In The First Four Years, According To Famitsu
I'd like to see eBaseball Powerful Pro Yakyuu 2020 get an English localization.
Re: Review: Citizens Unite!: Earth x Space - Two Mid-Tier RPGs For The Price Of One
I've always been interested in these games but never quite made a move on them. May grab this if I see it on sale.
Re: Video: Check Out 12 Minutes Of Story Of Seasons: Pioneers Of Olive Town Gameplay
I'm still interested, though some of the impressions and news of patches has me wary.
