Sega has confirmed that Technosoft's seminal RTS title Herzog Zwei is the next game to get the Sega Ages treatment on Switch.
Initially announced for Switch back in 2019, Herzog Zwei originally launched on the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis in 1989 and is cited as an inspiration by the developers of games like Dune II, Warcraft, Command & Conquer and Starcraft.
In the game, you control a mech which can transform into a robot, and you use this to pick up units you've manufactured and move them around the map. The ultimate aim is to destroy your opponent's base, and you can use your foot soldiers to occupy mini-bases dotted around the map to give yourself a tactical advantage.
As with other games in the Sega Ages range, Herzog Zwei will benefit from enhancements. New information panels are added to the left and right side of the game screen, including a handy minimap, unit details and information on the orders you've assigned. There's also a 'Helper' mode which will make it easier for newcomers to get to grips with the RTS action; with this enabled, your base and robot have enhanced health, and you also get extra funds for constructing units.
However, perhaps the most exciting thing about the Sega Ages update is the introduction of online play. As fans of the Mega Drive original will attest, Herzog Zwei is one of the best two-player competitive titles on the console, so being able to play against people all over the world is going to be a real boon.
We don't have a solid release date for Herzog Zwei on Switch yet, but in the past when Sega has made this kind of announcement, a launch isn't too far away. The game will cost 999 yen in Japan.

This is supposedly one of the best hidden gems on the genesis so looking forward to trying it out!
*Insert "Where's Daytona, Jet Set Radio, Virtua Fighter, etc" here
Nice. I'd like to see some modern games inspired by it on Switch too, namely Tooth and Tail.
@Zeldafan79 It absolutely is. It's one of the best games of all time, and I don't say that kind of thing lightly!
Isn't this also the LAST SEGA AGES game?
Oh brilliant!
Erm...please Mr SEGA sir, can we have another wave of games?
OT crysis remastered for Switch 23rd July
Yes! This is brilliant news. Herzog Zwei is one of my favourite games of all time and is easily a top 5 Mega Drive/Genesis title for me. Once you get into it, it's really addictive and there's nothing else quite like it. I still own and play my Mega Drive copy regularly.
My dad really liked this game when I was tiny.
Hmm. Not a game I know. I wonder if Advance Wars fans might find something to love here?
This is the last scheduled Ages Release, hopefully we will get news on the next batch soon
Not something I can get into. I like the fact that it has online play though.
@Blister It's a very different game, because it's totally real-time. You're flying your craft around which can shoot like in any other 2D shmup, and you can transform at will to destroy ground-based units. All of your constructed units have to be issued with commands to tell them what to do, then they trundle off and execute those commands automatically.
It's really close to an RTS than a turn-based strategy game, but even that doesn't quite explain it, because you're not just a floating mouse cursor hovering over the battlefield - you're taking part in the action. It's bloody brilliant, basically.
I've heard of the game and seen some gameplay but I've never played it. I may get it someday since I've only ever heard good things about the game.
@nmanifold Well Daytona has a modern port for ps4 and xboxone and it would be great fir for the switch.
What I really want to know is WHAT Sega Ages games are lined up beyond this release?? Cmon sega!
Sure, Super Mario Kart had all the street cred, Street Fighter II was on everybody mind... but did you rent Herzog Zwei for a day and sit down with a mate for hours straight playing this in versus mode? One of the best local multiplayer games ever, right next to Mega Bomberman and Micro Machines on the Mega Drive. Perfect for the Switch in tabletop mode.
One of my most anticipated titles of 2020.
Never played it, but I've been hearing about it since the late 90s. It's time, Herzog Zwei. It's time.
This was up there with Tactics Ogre, Bahamut Lagoon, and Final Fantasy V as a yet another incredible game that desperately deserved, but was denied, a Western release. Can't wait.
This is potentially an actual game of the year for me lol! Currently Xenoblade Chronicles (again lmao!)
@Atticus-XI It came out in North America and Europe.
Definitely interesting; never heard of it before.
Also somewhat a step in the right direction for the Sega Ages line in offering titles that have never been re-released before and are not easy to get hold of now.
On the other hand, Sega remains most well known among longtime Sega fans for their arcade style games, of which a lot of their post-16 Bit back catalogue remains locked away to many people. Having not released such games for so long, I'm starting to wonder if there are actual technical issues.
This is fantastic news! one of the very best two player strategy games of yesteryear. Have fond memories of kicking my brother's butt on this constantly... so he probably won't be too happy by its release!!
This is something that I am looking forward to trying. It sounds a lot like the multiplayer mode in Future Cop LAPD.
Too bad this is the last one in the line. Nothing more to look forward to.
Good effort with the additions for this one. Keep the game feeling like it always did but with some nice QOL features to use up the empty screen real estate.
This is great news as I've always been a huge fan of this game and always thought it really needed some online play to spice it up.
I was soooooo bad at this game. I just couldn't keep up with the speed of it.
I've never been able to get into this. I think it's mainly due to the far too small view area and maybe the controls to a degree too. Also, I guess I'm just not a huge fan of this kind of strategy game with bases and units and stuff, unless it's so simple and transparent what to do that I don't have to think about it and can just have fun. Sure, if there's an amazing tutorial that can guide me through everything really clearly and be fun at the same time--but I don't recall this game having such a thing.
PS. I'm also not a huge fun of all the additional visual stuff they've added as it doesn't match the resolution of the rest of the game, and I actually really hate when someone tries to do these kinds of retro games but adds in HD art and stuff like that, which does not match properly with the rest of the aesthetic. If it's not going to be done totally right and in-keeping with the original style then I'd honestly rather not having it there permanently tainting the experience. This is not the correct way to work with these retro games in modern times imo, unless it's more like sticking some cabinet art on the borders as an option or whatever that is clearly not supposed to represent any part of the actual game, which I can accept so long as it looks really great. It's the same reason I play my SNES Classic Edition games with plain old black borders, so all I see is how the game was supposed to look like originally without any crap that just dilutes it in some way.
@Atariboy holy cow I hope that’s not true! Sega has sooo much more to offer us!!
I would love to get this as well as a release of Dune for the Sega Genesis. I loved RTS games in that era and up until around 1999, but I lost interested as games became more complex than the original Command and Conquer.
oh man, i had some time with this one.
@joey302 I hope I'm wrong, too. But they've always announced these well in advance of release and new announcements would start happening well before the previous wave of releases had concluded.
Yet we're almost to the end of the final batch of 6 games that was announced in March 2019, so it's sadly looking like the end is near.
@Atariboy i would have to say that would be a bad if not stupid decision if they stopped here. I don’t have to tell a knowledgeable gamer like you the hundreds of classics Sega has in their vault. Smh 🤦♂️ not even to mention that it never made any business sense to me to not have the ages line on the other consoles?? Seems like a lost monetary opportunity to me 🤷♂️
Still in the top 3 of my favourite ever megadrive games. 2 player was amazing.
@Damo Thanks for this response. This game is definitely on my radar. The content you guys produce is very much appreciated!
Holy *****. Online Multiplayer. This is ***** amazing. This is going to take over my life. I rented this as a kid and it was one of the best games I had ever played up until that point. I could never find it for sale, and eventually moved on. I cannot wait to play this again.
Spent hours and hours as a kid playing this masterpiece! Been checking for news on this AGES release. So excited!! Hope you can play the classic as well as the new enhanced version. Next on my wanted list for AGES is 'Kings Bounty'.
It takes a little learning, and then you're hooked.
Yeah, this is going to be fun. Back in the day, my buddies and I felt like the only people in the world that knew how amazing this game was. No Internet, yet. Game magazine reviews that I saw marked it super low because they just didn't take the time to understand it, I presume. Same happened with Target Earth in the US, and that is my other favorite game on the SEGA Genesis.
I mean, both of those games were not very accessible back in the day. I didn't really get into Target Earth until I accidentally activated the continue cheat code — only one I ever found that way, I think! And my buddy just decided to take a tank right over to the AI base in this game, which gave us the time to advance and start to understand how to compete with them (though it is a cheat you can use on the lower difficulties)
Anyway, the treatment of Phantasy Star was completely amazing and maintains all the nostalgia despite a bunch of "intrusive" features that were very well thought out. I see the same type of additions here and they look just about perfect and very welcome. Will help new players find the fun and also fix the problem with info screens (maps, etc) taking up the whole screen in the original (and no icons, just letters to identify stats on the main screen!)
Thanks for being so knowledgeable about my faves, @Damo! Even though I think I remember it was you who "incorrectly" prefers the basic Cybernator to the deeper Target Earth.
@Antikrish Kings Bounty was another sleeper game that I really enjoyed on a random rental.
@aaronsullivan I still play it now and again, it just gets better with age I think! It is a shame that it never makes it onto the various megadrive retro collections because it deserves way more respect. Do you have a chance to have another game of it Aaron?
@Antikrish I did play it again for a short time, recently. It's funny, because I had remembered it as fun because of its simplicity but then found it kind of complex when I came back to it decades later!
I think it was the graphical simplicity that made that idea stick, and I really got into the game loop and found the progression fun. Ironically, it was probably the different kind of complexity that some of those PC to Sega MD/Genesis ports of the time had that got me sucked in. I had forgotten a ton about it.
It has maintained a following, apparently, with a series of games starting with "The Legend", and I'm reminded that there is now a "true" sequel to the original in development and coming to Switch (and everywhere else).
