That retrobit N64 controller looks hella hard to use. What's with the Dpad position? Aside from that, Trials of Mana for me all the way, assuming I get it on Switch anyway. (And I likely will, given that PSN has been unstable for me since the outbreak). Xenoblade chronicles is a maybe for me, had my fill of the original Wii version. Lots of cool releases overall though.
As cool as something like this is, I'd love to see them do a modern Taito Legends for Switch or PS4. Still need to pick this game up, too. I love Taito games.
I get what @retro_player_77 is saying, honestly. While it's true the N64 is very common and not hard to find, it always sucks when a console, cartridge, etc has to be cannibalized for parts to make something since we should be looking at ways to preserve these ancient pieces of hardware rather than scrapping them for parts.
That said though this is a really cool mod and I'm just glad it was an N64 and not something more valuable. Of all the systems to cannibalize for a mod, I'd say the N64 is one of the best choices given how common it is. I've been getting into console mods more and more lately so I love seeing these kinds of things.
Also, I definitely agree we need more N64 support from Nintendo.
I'd kill for some Saturn or Dreamcast games to make it over to Switch or PS4, but I'm expecting the usual slew of Sonic, Golden Axe, and Streets of Rage ports.

I've had the same problem since day 1, but I just used the down time to play Doom Eternal instead since I bought both. My museum should be finished tomorrow.
In defense of the reviewer, they can't cover all the bases and it probably just didn't occur to them to specify. I'm also not entirely sure how much experience they have with the originals, given that these are niche Japanese games with barely any presence outside of Asia. On the note of permadeath I have nothing to add except for the fact that the original Langrisser actually DID have permadeath. Later on they simply changed it to your characters getting alternate endings based on whether or not they had to "flee" battle. A neat little extra bit of info, I guess. But yeah there's no permadeath, reviewer probably simply forgot to mention it. That's why the comment section exists though.
I didn't contradict anything, you aren't required to see any of the extra story content, it adds very little overall to the game's plot. Yes it exists, but if you don't want to see it, you don't have to. It really doesn't matter and isn't even canon to the rest of the series. Like I said it's just a "what if" scenario, an alternate sequence of events. The only story that matters is the main one because it's canon to the rest of the series as well as the original Genesis/Mega Drive versions. For example choosing to go Imperial on Langrisser II really doesn't reveal much we didn't already learn from the default path. There's even a nice little Story Tree for you to view all the paths so you can skip to the map where a story branch is presented so you can easily start a new path if you wish, a function that the original games didn't have without using cheats.
There is absolutely nothing to complain about here. The remakes aren't perfect and there are several valid complaints that can be raised but the branching story definitely isn't one of them. It sounds like a personal hang-up more than anything and I doubt anything I say is going to change that.
Neither Langrisser I or II originally had branching storylines, the concept was added to Langrisser II when it came to other consoles and Langrisser I only received it in this remake. There IS a canon story, the descendants of light path (the main path) is the canon story for both games. You don't have to switch paths to "see everything", the other story routes are literally just different takes on the war and story. It's not like playing on different routes reveals the full story or anything, you get the full story by simply playing with your main faction. Switching factions is quite literally a "What if" situation and isn't canon.
There's also a very clear marking point when changing factions, with your character being presented with a choice before changing factions. You're never forced to change and since the original versions never had the feature, sticking with the descendants of light in both games provides the full story. At best, changing factions will reveal irrelevant pieces of character background that you probably won't care about unless you really like one faction over the other.
@cmk8
Pretty easy overall, with some difficulty spikes here or there. It's significantly easier than the original games, but some maps may still require multiple attempts. For example, Langrisser I's first map can be made more challenging if you choose to try and fight some of the tougher enemies on the right of the screen, and the second map may require a few tries because you have to protect a weaker CO and her units. Both Langrisser I and II also have a tendency to spring reinforcements or otherwise change the flow of battle, so you need to adapt on some maps when the situation changes. There's a few spots where the enemy CO will try to throw a serious wrench in your plans, such as Langrisser II where one of the enemy COs will set the map on fire, forcing your army to keep moving forward. There's maps where you may need to rush a specific CO to a certain tile and so on. It's easier overall than Fire Emblem and similar games, with a harder difficulty unlocking after you finish the game. Newcomers to the game may struggle in spots, but it's by no means a hard game.
Really digging the game so far, been playing it since it first came out. The new leveling system and the inclusion of a branching story for Langrisser I are huge bonuses for me, plus the removal of the rally function means that battles are more engaging than they were in the original. Enemy AI is no longer as timid as they were before and will actively engage you in battle most of the time rather than turtle. Two of my favorite Genesis games (one of which has never been officially released in english) bundled together with new features is easily worth the 50 dollars, so anyone complaining that it's overpriced frankly is wrong. You're getting a fair bit of content for the money.
The original map sprites were barely recognizable pixels bumping into each other in battle, while here they're actually recognizable as human beings or whatever you're fighting. The new artwork isn't horrible IMO but the classic artwork is definitely better and the option to toggle it is appreciated, but bear in mind that doing so turns off some of the new still scenes that were added. The classic mode art looks really good in the higher resolution but it won't match the sprites in battle. Personally though I think the new artwork is pretty decent, though I hate how Leon, Imelda, and the other Imperials on Langrisser II look. Chris, Jessica, Narm, Cherie, and many others look great though. With that said I agree they could be better. I've never been overly fond of the super-clean sprites look that mobile games use myself, so I would probably have preferred a different approach, but it works well enough. Definitely ain't a bad remake, they put in plenty of extra effort that anyone who has played the original games would immediately notice, such as a completely overhauled stat system, a new skill system, balancing, (slimes are no longer ridiculously tanky), etc. in the original games, most maps would end with you having no units and just using commanders, dragging battles on and on because units would simply get blown away too quickly. Here, thanks to the new HP system, units can actually take some hits, making battles feel more balanced overall. It'll be interesting to see Langrisser II maps play out compared to how they usually play out for me. Oh and the remixed music is freaking awesome, though the option for the original soundtrack is also present. I'm still working my way through the games but I hear there's NG+ as well. as far as technical and performance issues go, I haven't had any issues with my digital version but I have no idea how it compares to the PS4 or Steam versions as of right now.
The remake is a bit easier than originals overall but I've heard there's a hard/challenge mode after clearing the game, so hopefully that'll add some extra challenge. The originals were not known for being super hard though. I also wish they had taken a cue from Fire Emblem and allowed us to actually see the map we're about to play on. It's not a perfect remake but I think for the money it's a solid package. Overall I think a 7 is a fair review, but the comments on the game are far too harsh and likely made by people with little to no experience with the series and are judging the game by the visuals. Make no mistake, this ain't no Three Houses. You're not going to be wowed by the visuals or the animations, but look beyond that and you'll find a solid strategy game with a fair amount of content to get into. Fans of the originals should get it ASAP while newcomers may want to research a bit first. As they say, don't judge a book by its cover.
I just finished going through all 4 episodes of the classic Doom yesterday and so far I don't have the urge to shoot up any high schools, but we'll see what happens when I finish Doom II.
I'm surprised I'm not the only one getting Langrisser I & II. I was pleasantly surprised with the demo and found myself wanting more. I especially love that the classic art and music are options. For me, the classic art+new music is a wonderful combination.
Other than that, I'm just waitin' for New Leaf. If I had the cash, Rescue Team DX would be worth pickin' up. The demo for that was good as well and I'm kind of impressed they put so much effort into it.
Outside of SOTN missing from the list, I find this a much more agreeable list than the Fire Emblem one. In fact I'm actually quite pleased to see Aria of Sorrow made the top since that's actually one of my top 3 Igavania games. Dawn of Sorrow is IMO just as good if you apply the patch that fixes the stupid touch screen controls. Needing to complete a seal to beat bosses is just asinine. Without that patch, I'd put it lower on the list for sure.
You can't go wrong with 90% of the Castlevania games though. You can pick one at total random and it'll probably still be an enjoyable game. Even some of the GB games are pretty decent. Kid Dracula and Belmont's Revenge in particular. Even the so called "bad" Castlevania games like Adventure, Simon's Quest, and Castlevania 64 have a decent fan following.
My grandma actually collected these and still has them, the toys I mean not the actual happy meals. But yeah these were super cool back in the day and I wouldn't mind getting my hands on them for display purposes. The Goomba toy was always my favorite one.
I played this to death on 3DS so I'll likely pass on the Switch version... for now. I know at some point I'll likely succumb to the temptation, likely when it goes on sale or price drops.
I'm curious if there's any significant input lag and if they increased the field of vision at all. Judging by the screenshots, I'm guessing the screen is still incredibly cramped. Honestly if they widened the view so that I didn't constantly bump into everything 5 inches in front of my character, this would be a must-have collection for me. As it stands, I own all of the games in the original boxes and all, so I have no real reason to go for this collection right now.
Love this game, but releasing it on the same day as Doom Eternal is kind of silly. I feel like it should be released a week or so ahead of Eternal. It's a N64 game, I doubt it really needs all this time in the oven.
That aside, I'm gonna get both of 'em on day one. Had a blast with Doom 64 as a kid.
Melee did the same by throwing Roy in to promote the upcoming Fire Emblem game on GBA in Japan, so it's not like this is a new trend or anything. Byleth, DQ Hero, and Joker are all definitely promoting new and popular games right now. At least we got K.Rool and Banjo though. With the new challenger pack coming, we may have a shot at seeing some more interesting characters down the line. I wouldn't mind seeing some more Namco and Konami characters make it in, such as Klonoa, Goemon, etc, but the odds of this are extremely low for reasons you already stated. Those characters have no new, popular games out at the moment so they're extremely unlikely. On the Nintendo side of things, Issac from Golden Sun would be interesting (I know he's an assist so it ain't happening) and I still wouldn't mind if Shantae actually made it in. As long as it's not another FE character, I'm happy.
Given the current trend though, the next character is probably going to be from Pokemon Sword and Shield. I mean, Duck Hunt kinda proved that Nintendo can come up with some off the wall surprises once in a while, but my money is still on a Pokemon S&S rep.
It took a subscription fee to make it happen, but I'm glad people are coming around and realizing that FEH is a cash grab. I've always hated it for that reason and this only gives me more reason to hate it. People who know jack about FE play this and get twisted ideas about certain characters because the game just waifus every female up. Seriously Lyn in a wedding dress? Yeah that doesn't go against the character at all. Having Caeda act like a sniveling waif, sure why not? This game was always trash and now it's just trashier. I hope people delete this game off their phone. I'm tired of one of my favorite franchises being turned into a cash grab mobile game with waifus. If it weren't for 3 Houses, I'd have abandoned all hope for the franchise.
Erik and Mia? I'll be all over that, especially since I finished DQ XI few months ago. I've only recently started messing with DQ Monsters but what I played was pretty enjoyable. I wouldn't mind seeing more Pokemon competitors like this.
I've only recently started dabbling with Digimon games with Digimon World DS but from what I've played of these Digimon games, I'd say they're pretty strong contenders against Pokemon. Not sure how good the Switch Digimon game is though.
That being said though I'd love to see the monster raising genre make more of a comeback. Back in the day we had Monster Rancher, Jade Cocoon, Digimon, Fossil Fighters, Dragon Quest Monsters, I mean the list goes on. I'd love to see some of these make a comeback. Also if Custom Robo counts, bring that back too please.
As a huge FE fan, I too am a bit disappointed that the next Smash DLC is yet another Fire Emblem character. I've been critical of Sega for being short-sighted with their franchises but in all honesty, Nintendo can be just as bad about these. Of all the franchises that they could have chosen to pull a rep for, they choose the one where we already have a huge amount of characters to choose from.
With that said though, I think Byleth will be fun to play so I'm not really too bothered either way.
Unless it's a port or remaster of Paper Mario, Thousand Year Door, or Super Paper Mario, I doubt I'm interested. I'd be down for more 2D Metroid though.
Unless it's Sonic Mania 2 or a M2 port of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, I'd much rather see Sega focus a bit on other franchises such as Golden Axe, Shinobi, and god forbid we finally get a Shining Force that's actually a Shining Force game.
Who am I kidding though, we're just gonna get another uninspired cash-grab Sonic game where all you do is run down a tunnel and sometimes hit a button. I suppose I should be grateful that we're even getting a Streets of Rage sequel though, so there's always that. As a huge Sega fan though it always pains me to see them continue to push Sonic games when they have a huge library of amazing games that they could easily be using. No time for that though when you can churn out another yearly sonic game and make easy profit. Gotta go fast!
To be clear I was merging my response to you and Scullie at the same time since you quoted me at the exact moment I was responding to him. Probably should have done individual responses. The majority of my post is intended for @scully1888. I just threw your name in there at the last minute to go ahead and address both at once.
But yeah If your stance is that it would be better if not altered, that's completely fine. People trashing on the game itself because of censorship is not cool, I agree. We're pretty much in the same camp there, sorry for not being more clear in my original post. My issue is with the logic that censorship of the game is somehow okay and that people upset about it are somehow perverts etc. This is complete nonsense and it goes far beyond wanting to see anime girls in swimsuits or whatever.
EDIT: @Guitar_bard Someone out there actually did a patch for Ninja Gaiden 3 called Ninja Gaiden 3 Restoration, simply fixes the game's brutal difficulty down to the Japanese version while still keeping the English translated text. It's pretty awesome and it made me a fan of the game. Ninja Gaiden 3 in the US was nearly unplayable for me but the Japanese version is so much more manageable and just fun to play. (Also for what it's worth, I prefer the US Mario 2 over the Japanese Mario 2.)
Yet there were enough people upset about the change to issue a translation patch that essentially undoes all of the censorship changes and the localisation also initially disappointed the game's co-director, the latter of which is even visible in the link I left. Also the RE games are censored due to violent content, totally different issue. Literally has nothing to do with the discussion. Whether or not it was enough sales on Amazon to make a difference also doesn't really matter, the point is still the same. It was enough for it to be the number one seller for a time on Amazon Japan, meaning it was selling more than games like Splatoon. It's almost as if people don't like censorship.
The point I'm making is that while you're trying to downplay the censorship fiasco, it was bad enough that Nintendo themselves issued an apology about it in Japan when Jap gamers realized they were getting the censored version. It isn't the non-issue you're making it out to be, even if you don't care that much personally. You can't just downplay this as a bunch of Nintendolifers being angry in the comments, it was a legit issue back then and it's a legit issue now. As @NEStalgia and @ThanosReXXX pointed out, this goes way beyond taking out a boob slider or some silly face-touching mini game. Justifying it because everyone is getting a censored version is utterly ridiculous. This game is from the Nintendo Treehouse era of censorship and frankly shouldn't even be censored in either region in the first place.
"You’ll no doubt see some chat in the comments about how the censorship in this version is so outrageous that Nintendo and Atlus may as well have kicked your door down and slapped your mother right in the face, but the reality is that the few changes made don’t affect the game in any way, and simply make things a tad less creepy. Besides, this time Japan gets the ‘censored’ version too, so it’s not like there’s a special uncut Switch version the west is missing out on."
Yeah and if I recall correctly, Japanese fans responded by not buying the Switch version and instead opting for their uncensored Wii U version.
I'd be down with a Pikmin 3 port for sure, but I definitely want the other to be 3D World, easily one of my favorite Wii U games. Xenoblade Chronicles X or 101 would be cool too. If going the Wii route, I'd be really interested in a possible Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 HD Remaster as well. I wouldn't be opposed to a whole Pikmin Trilogy ala Metroid Prime Trilogy either, especially if the joycons are supported.
If it were EA pulling this, they'd be pinned to a cross by now, but it's Nintendo so it's totally fine. The fanbase has already made it painfully clear they will buy up even the most mediocre Pokemon titles at this rate, why not start nickle and diming with DLC too?
If they're actually going to do this in place of the "Ultra" version crap then I'm all on board with that but I have a feeling we're still getting a third version, probably with all the DLC included like a bundle.
I knew I didn't like the direction this game was going in and this simply confirms it. This is the first generation I've skipped and it pains me. I remember when all the obtainable Pokemon were included in the base game and no DLC or patches were required. Funny how the most rushed, incomplete Pokemon game is also the first one to require DLC content. All of this and we're also still playing a game where the characters simply bump into each other as attack animations. Just once I'd like to see Gamefreak design a Pokemon game like they give a toss. Each one feels more phoned in than the last and it's getting old. Throw DLC into the mix and I can't possibly be less interested, unless the DLC is something like letting us visit a whole new region Gold/Silver style. That'd actually be pretty rad but I expect nothing more than a new area that'll take at most, 30 minutes to clear. I actually hope I'm wrong on that but I doubt it. Sounds like a very Gamefreak thing to do.
I do appreciate Gamefreak lubing our arses up before screwing us. At least we know what's coming. They're getting us nice and conditioned for mtx and other practices.
I love Burai fighter and I have to admit I never actually knew about the drastic cover difference. Pretty cool. Western box art definitely had a weird thing against being remotely Japanese at one point, a good example being Hammerin' Harry which had a ridiculously angry hammer-guy on the front in the west and a more chill anime character in Japan.

Yeah I realize that had nothing to do with anything.

Re: No Link Between Violent Video Games And Violent Behaviour, Says American Psychological Association
I just finished going through all 4 episodes of the classic Doom yesterday and so far I don't have the urge to shoot up any high schools, but we'll see what happens when I finish Doom II.
Re: Nintendo Download: 5th March (North America)
I'm surprised I'm not the only one getting Langrisser I & II. I was pleasantly surprised with the demo and found myself wanting more. I especially love that the classic art and music are options. For me, the classic art+new music is a wonderful combination.
Other than that, I'm just waitin' for New Leaf. If I had the cash, Rescue Team DX would be worth pickin' up. The demo for that was good as well and I'm kind of impressed they put so much effort into it.
Re: Feature: Best Castlevania Games On Nintendo Consoles
Re: 2020 BAFTA Games Awards Nominations Revealed, Luigi's Mansion 3 Shines For Nintendo
Not enough Luigi's Mansion and 3 Houses, way too much Control and Death Stranding on this list.
Re: Random: This 1990 Super Mario Bros. 3 Happy Meal Reminds Us Of Simpler Times
My grandma actually collected these and still has them, the toys I mean not the actual happy meals. But yeah these were super cool back in the day and I wouldn't mind getting my hands on them for display purposes. The Goomba toy was always my favorite one.
Re: Review: Rune Factory 4 Special - The Definitive Version Of A Series Classic
I played this to death on 3DS so I'll likely pass on the Switch version... for now. I know at some point I'll likely succumb to the temptation, likely when it goes on sale or price drops.
Re: Review: Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection - A Superb Selection Of Retro Classics
Re: Yuri Visual Novel SeaBed Comes To Switch Next Month With Two Brand New Scenes
I came here for the comments and was not disappointed.
Re: Looks Like DOOM 64 Will Only Cost £3.99 On Switch
Love this game, but releasing it on the same day as Doom Eternal is kind of silly. I feel like it should be released a week or so ahead of Eternal. It's a N64 game, I doubt it really needs all this time in the oven.
That aside, I'm gonna get both of 'em on day one. Had a blast with Doom 64 as a kid.
Re: Nintendo Expands The Switch Online SNES And NES Library With Four More Games
Twinbee and Shadow Ninja are legit, not sure about the other two though.
Re: Random: Addicted To Fortnite? Try Playing Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, Says Psychologist
Trading one addiction for another.
Re: Sakurai Knows Smash Bros. Has Too Many Fire Emblem Characters, But It's Nintendo's Fault
@NEStalgia
Re: Mobile Hit Fire Emblem Heroes Introduces A New Subscription-Based Service
Re: Here's Another Monster-Battling RPG That's After Pokémon's Crown
@Xansies
Erik and Mia? I'll be all over that, especially since I finished DQ XI few months ago. I've only recently started messing with DQ Monsters but what I played was pretty enjoyable. I wouldn't mind seeing more Pokemon competitors like this.
Re: Here's Another Monster-Battling RPG That's After Pokémon's Crown
I've only recently started dabbling with Digimon games with Digimon World DS but from what I've played of these Digimon games, I'd say they're pretty strong contenders against Pokemon. Not sure how good the Switch Digimon game is though.
That being said though I'd love to see the monster raising genre make more of a comeback. Back in the day we had Monster Rancher, Jade Cocoon, Digimon, Fossil Fighters, Dragon Quest Monsters, I mean the list goes on. I'd love to see some of these make a comeback. Also if Custom Robo counts, bring that back too please.
Re: Random: Smash Bros. Director Masahiro Sakurai Played 242 PlayStation Games Last Year
Well he beat my number by almost 100 games. Not bad Sakurai. I need to step up my game!
Re: Video: Let's Talk About Byleth In Smash Bros. And The Fourth House In Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Re: Rumour: Prolific Leaker Says We'll Get Paper Mario And A 2D Metroid This Year
Unless it's a port or remaster of Paper Mario, Thousand Year Door, or Super Paper Mario, I doubt I'm interested. I'd be down for more 2D Metroid though.
Re: Sega To Share Fresh Sonic News On The 20th Of Every Month During 2020
Unless it's Sonic Mania 2 or a M2 port of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, I'd much rather see Sega focus a bit on other franchises such as Golden Axe, Shinobi, and god forbid we finally get a Shining Force that's actually a Shining Force game.
Re: Review: 198X - A Fabulous, If Fleeting, Celebration Of Arcade Gaming's Golden Era
Color me interested in this one for sure. I'm a big fan of retro gaming and this looks right up my alley. I especially like the story concept.
Re: Bandai Namco Could Be Reviving The Japan-Only GameCube Exclusive Mr. Driller: Drill Land
I really like the Mr. Driller games so I'd be down with a new one.
Re: Review: Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore - A Pitch-Perfect, Feel-Good JRPG
@Kr96
Re: Review: Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore - A Pitch-Perfect, Feel-Good JRPG
@Kr96 @scully1888
Re: Knuckles The Echidna To Return In Lock-On Form To Sonic The Hedgehog 2 On Switch
This gives me hope that they'll finally do a M2 port of Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
Re: Review: Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore - A Pitch-Perfect, Feel-Good JRPG
"You’ll no doubt see some chat in the comments about how the censorship in this version is so outrageous that Nintendo and Atlus may as well have kicked your door down and slapped your mother right in the face, but the reality is that the few changes made don’t affect the game in any way, and simply make things a tad less creepy. Besides, this time Japan gets the ‘censored’ version too, so it’s not like there’s a special uncut Switch version the west is missing out on."
Yeah and if I recall correctly, Japanese fans responded by not buying the Switch version and instead opting for their uncensored Wii U version.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2019/10/uncensored_version_of_tokyo_mirage_sessions_fe_becomes_best-selling_wii_u_game_on_amazon_japan
So yeah. Japanese gamers don't like their games being censored any more than we do. Imagine that.
Re: Bethesda's Hellish Add-On Update For DOOM And DOOM II Is Now Available
I love that they're doing all these fixes but I'd really like for them to correct the slowed down music if possible.
EDIT: Apparently the music has been fixed? If that's the case, I might have to start diving into these releases, especially when Doom 64 comes out.
Re: IGN Founder Offers Hint At One Of The Rumoured Wii U Ports Coming To Switch
I'd be down with a Pikmin 3 port for sure, but I definitely want the other to be 3D World, easily one of my favorite Wii U games. Xenoblade Chronicles X or 101 would be cool too. If going the Wii route, I'd be really interested in a possible Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 HD Remaster as well. I wouldn't be opposed to a whole Pikmin Trilogy ala Metroid Prime Trilogy either, especially if the joycons are supported.
Re: Talking Point: Why Pokémon Sword & Shield's Expansion Pass Changes The Rules For The Series
Re: Nintendo Download: 9th January (North America)
I misread "Thoth" as "Thot" for a second and wondered what kinda game they were trying to sell.
Re: The Original Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Games Are Being Remade For Switch
I enjoyed these games so I'm kind of intrigued here.
Re: Pokémon Sword And Shield Is Getting An Expansion Pass, And It Looks Mighty
I do appreciate Gamefreak lubing our arses up before screwing us. At least we know what's coming. They're getting us nice and conditioned for mtx and other practices.
Please be gentle, Gamefreak.
Re: Feature: No Anime Please, We're Westerners - When Anime Was Taboo In Western Games
