I'd say they could stand to benefit from a bit of competition... But that requires sportsmanship, and nowadays there's a non-zero percent chance Nintendo just patents the concept of kart racing and sues.
@h3s Right. And old disks are pretty susceptible to wear too, I've had a few used Gamecube games die on me.
I wasn't meaning to say physical games are permanent, they'll all erode beyond repair one day. But as of now they're outlasting digital stores and it's not even close.
@MrPerson0 Why wouldn't they eventually shut down? And more importantly, who could stop Nintendo from shutting them down? "Foreseeable future" is not forever.
@Olmectron That's great for now, but what about when they shut the servers down and you can't access the store at all anymore? Any game you purchased not installed on the console will be gone.
And let's not ignore that you can't buy games on those shops, any digital only title you didn't buy is inaccessible to you.
This isn't to say digital games and storefronts are bad. Far from it. But having options is important, and Nintendo (among other companies) want to take that from you.
@HingryHuppo Exactly. What's that quote from Gabe Newell I've heard a million times? "Piracy is a service issue." These storefronts have such short lifespans that Sugimori's idea of digital preservation is just untenable. Thank god for emulation and the fans who put in the work to keep these older games playable. Companies clearly would rather you forget them... You know, until they resell them to you.
Digital games last longer lol what a ***** joke. Using Nintendo alone as an example, the Wii Shop Channel, DSI store, and the Wii U & 3DS eshop have all been shut down. Every game on them is GONE and many of them have no alternative options and/or will never be released again. Meanwhile my SNES carts (most of them are older than I am!) still work perfectly fine.
They don't want you to own your games, they hate it.
@ShadLink If you think this DLC hasn't been completed for several months and couldn't have been included with the base game, then I think you're a perfect customer for a company like Nintendo. Sorry I don't have an uncle who works there there to tell me the exact times development started and ended, but you don't either. That's the last thing I'm going to say on that point.
I'd ask you to engage with the point of my original response, but something tells you're going to continue to be a perfect demonstration of it. So forget it.
@Misima was much wiser than me by just hitting ignore lmao
@RiasGremory Trump's tariffs = $20 DLC for Donkey Kong worldwide, gotcha. It all makes so much sense now. I can't believe the mean president was just gonna let poor Nintendo starve like that.
@ShadLink Actually my baseless assertion is better than your baseless assertion. I'm not going to have a circular argument with you dude. It doesn't matter if the DLC was developed before or after the base game, people can still take issue with the price.
@ShadLink I don't have a source, it's a claim I made myself based off my own reasoning.
And where's your proof that it was developed after the base game? If this is the argument you want to have then yours is equally as baseless. And still beyond the point as you continue trying to justify to me why you spent $20 on the DLC. It's none of my business, dude, you can buy whatever you want.
@ShadLink What allegation? That the DLC was being made pre release?? Basic reasoning. You ACTUALLY think they developed the entire DLC in the two months the game's been out??? How long do you think video games take to make if you believe you can design, model, program, play test, and QA an entire open level plus a whole alternate game mode in under 60 days?
And let me reiterate, you do NOT need to justify your purchase to me. It's like you ignored the entire point of my reply just to ask me "SOURCE!?" for common sense.
@RiasGremory They aren't. Nintendo said it themselves. Nice try though. Like how do tariffs influence the price of DLC exactly? And do you understand that this business practice long predates the current US administration??? As if these companies need an excuse to bleed you dry bro
@ShadLink And to you defending the price: You are not obligated to justify your purchase. Nobody here cares what you spend your money on, the criticism is directed at Nintendo's monetization.
I know you don't believe they whipped up a whole new level and game mode in the course of two months. This DLC isn't "something extra for the fans", Nintendo is NOT your friend. It was developed with the main game, lopped off and sold at a premium to squeeze more money out of you, and to extend their product's period of relevancy.
Too many fans think that buying a product that appeals to you means you need to become the producer's linebacker, or that discourse ought to be exclusively positive.
Probably one of their weaker ones despite the length. I'm incredibly biased with my hyper-fixation on screeching anime characters with swords. So Fire Emblem and Dragon Quest was more than enough for me...
But I didn't see anything that would convince someone who didn't already have a Switch 2 to buy one now, and Nintendo continues to disappoint with their pricing. After such a light year I'd assume they'd have a lot to show but they really didn't.
@AstroTheGamosian Swords goes for under $20 on eBay if you have a Wii. It's not great but not bad either. It does a well enough job combining Dragon Quest mechanics with a rail shooter (more like an on rails hack & slash).
And yeah Fleurette definitely made me feel things back when I played it in middle school lol, she has an excellent design.
Give it a shot.
@AstroTheGamosian The one that looks most interesting to you, they don't really have any significant connections to each other. They all look and play very alike, but take place in their own worlds and typically have something unique to offer. Fan favorites are III, V, VIII, & XI but you can't go wrong with any of them. DQI & especially DQII can be a little hard to get into nowadays, so maybe wait on next month's remake if you want to start from the start.
This and Dragon Quest were the highlights. It certainly LOOKS like Three Houses lol. Very happy I didn't have to wait long for the only reason I bought a Switch 2.
I just started a replay of the first Hollow Knight so I couldn't say for sure.
But I do know that people have got accustomed to newer video games handing them victories on a silver platter, so patience for anything that goes against that design tends to be low.
If I had to guess, people are getting humbled by the bosses and then need to take a one to two minute walk of shame back to them every time. The same reason people complain about Dark Souls.
I understand if someone finds that annoying. But plenty of other games exist and not every single one needs to accommodate your sensibilities.
I came across that disappearing glitch one time in the first dungeon pre-update. Also Sky's bird had like a stray white pixel on its wing that seems to be gone now, 👍 that one bothered me.
The derangement Silksong has caused over the last couple of weeks is very funny but also a bit sad. These developers seem to either have no faith in the merit of their own work, or their work has little to no merit. Whichever is the case Team Cherry and Silksong don't have anything to do with it.
Reminds me of when Baldur's Gate III came out and there were devs online crying about how its level of quality shouldn't be expected as the norm. Well, it's not the norm. That's what makes it an exceptional game. If the devs can't compete or cope with making a technically lesser product, then they aren't cut out for game development.
Out of the four exclusive titles for Nintendo Switch 2 so far you have:
A glorified Wikipedia article featuring adobe flash mini games
An overpriced, undercooked open world racing game where the open world and the racing are constantly at odds with the other.
A tech demo that's bereft of content and personality, whose only claim to relevancy at all is Nintendo's name being on it.
Donkey Kong, the one good game that I highly recommend you pick up... a few years down the line when the Switch 2 actually has games to warrant the $500 price tag, or whatever it will cost in the future as these draconian mega companies arbitrarily raise their prices ad infinitum.
Question to those who've played the game: Does Forgotten Land have any additional campaigns/modes like other Kirby games? I've gotten the impression that it's 10hrs for the base game and the $20 DLC adds an additional hour. I would never say that playtime = quality, but for $80 it's certainly a hard sell.
Was not a big fan of this one but I also never got very far in it. Loved Dawn of Ys though (the original Ys IV made by Hudson), that one's a stone cold classic!
Why add the guest characters if you're going to half-ass their inclusion? This detracts more from the game than if they weren't included at all. If you want this be a Sonic-focused racer, then have a roster of exclusively Sonic characters. I'd rather have another Sega racer personally, but sure as hell not like this.
@AStupidID I know about the GOG versions they've been around for about a year or so. I'm doubtful about a Switch release myself, if they were gonna do it, it would've been yesterday with the PS5 release. It'd be nice to be wrong though, RE2 is a masterpiece and the remake is not a replacement for it. Same as RE3, even if it's not as good. But I'd say the best you can hope for is N64/Gamecube NSO.
Always a treat to hear Sakurai yap and show off his games. The game itself looks like a souped up version of the original but it's hard to say if it it'll go anywhere beyond that.
Regardless it looks like fun, and I'll pick it up as long as City Trial still supports 4 player split screen.
We regret to inform you that Hollow Knight: Silksong will be delayed indefinitely, but we're also here to announce "Hollow Knight: Zote Zania", a quirky cozy puzzle game coming to you TBA
@AussieMcBucket I think I get you. Sometimes he directs something like Kid Icarus or Smash Brawl which feel like they have everything under the sun. Other times you get something like OG Air Ride or Smash 4 which feel more than a bit undercooked despite their positives. Hopefully Air Riders is more like the former but I can see it going either way.
