I think Megaman is a game that lends itself to iterative sequels. The gameplay is usually shaken up by new weapons, platforming challenges, and bosses. A new Assassin's Creed is going to have you fighting nameless guards using mostly the same equipment, with very little challenge in the climbing and exploration mechanics. It's not about changing what works, it's about re-inventing it so that's it's interesting again.

Re: Opinion: We Need More Couch Co-op RPGs

The biggest hangup for me on a lot of these is the fact that split/shared screen co-op has a lot of interruptions in these games. Secret of Mana has to pause the game anytime either player opens the menu. Diablo doesn't pause, but it's hard for other players to see what's happening when I'm opening the menu to change my gear. I'd love to have more games like these, but they need to make sure the game menus work around the co-op, rather than in spite of it.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Switch Year In Review 2024 - Our Most Played Games

I sunk a lot of time into the GBA app this year (Golden Sun and Golden Sun 2 finally came out). My biggest ACTUAL game was the Grandia HD Collection.

Metroid Prime HD also took up some time because of multiple playthroughs, but I expect Balatro will be my most played by End of December. I scoffed at that game when I heard it was nominated for GOTY but it really deserves it.

Time travel was the perfect power to integrate the story with the gameplay. I was really hoping it would be used again here, but they dug HARD into the alternate universe power, and frankly it's just uninteresting. It makes for a few good puzzles but it's not used effectively for the narrative. I'm sad because I do like Max as a character, but this did not get met back into the series.
