Re: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 Has Been Butchered For The Switch Remake

Hwatt

@KociolekDoSyta

I do understand where you're coming from and agree that going back for the sake of going back is not the right call. Maybe my perspective is coloured but I don't remember THPS4 being memorable for that mode and what I had remember enjoying was simply exploring the big levels, and they're still delivering that. Maybe that experience will be worse by this decision, or maybe the experience will be better.

For me I am open to the change but I understand why some wouldn't.

Re: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 Has Been Butchered For The Switch Remake

Hwatt

@KociolekDoSyta I disagree. They're not changing the genre here at that level. They're modifying some gameplay mechanics in one mode but the moment to moment experience is still the same. You're still skating, you're still exploring, you're still doing tricks and challenges.

I understand the frustrations but I think it's fair to see how this shakes out and how it actually plays. I think at worst, a vocal minority of consumers will be disappointed but the majority will continue to play the game and enjoy it. Who knows, maybe they will change their decision in the future, but on face value, it doesn't seem like a deal breaker for a remake.

Re: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 Has Been Butchered For The Switch Remake

Hwatt

@KociolekDoSyta

Remakes are not remasters, so I feel it's valid to modify the game (remake it). Many games that are remade usually modify some elements of the game to improve the experience. Is RE2 Remake not RE2 because it doesn't use a fixed camera? It's subjective, open for discussion, and again, doesn't rule out the originals. Though I do support the originals coming back to modern platforms, especially DRM free like GoG.

Re: Feature: These Past 8 Years Have Been A Privilege

Hwatt

I love how this medium has the ability to help heal. Wishing you all the best and hope the Switch 2 keeps up the momentum to a life of fulfillment

As for me, I'd love to say my DS or N64 or other nostalgic console is my favourite but I don't think I have had a better experience with Nintendo IP than I've had with the Switch.

The ability to play console and handheld type experiences as an adult, disconnected from the TV has been a game changer. I can get my moments in, however small they are, with the games I love, however I please. I don't believe I can go back to a traditional console and I am hopeful that Switch 2 will keep improving on an already winning formula.

Re: Poll: Will You Trade In Your Switch When Switch 2 Arrives?

Hwatt

I never trade it in for credits at a store, but I do sell old hardware directly via local classifieds.

As long as the transition is smooth, all software that I own works etc... I'll eventually sell my Switch after moving to Switch 2.

If software doesn't behave correctly or there are weird compromises, I'd likely keep it.

Re: Hideki Kamiya Wants Nintendo To Reboot Virtual Console For Switch 2

Hwatt

@AlienX

The incentive would be lowered to maintain an active subscription or have the expansion pass.

I don’t think they’d go down that route, unless you can only buy it if you have an active subscription. Maybe sub + purchase includes a discount on the purchase. If you lack a subscription, you pay full price.

E.g., $20 OoT without a subscription, $10 with.

Re: Talking Point: Why An LCD Screen Isn't The End Of The World For Switch 2

Hwatt

I won’t judge others. How you enjoy your gaming and setup is up to you. I personally will wait for a Switch 2 OLED if the screen is LCD at launch.

I predominantly (95%+) play in portable mode on the couch, in bed, or on a plane if traveling for more than 1hr+ as a passenger.

I love the contrast, smooth response, and motion clarity of an OLED. Pure, inky blacks are extremely difficult to beat.

If I didn’t have a large back log, I would certainly consider an LCD model. I’m in no rush but would greatly appreciate an OLED SKU sooner than later. That would make transition to Switch 2 a heck of a lot faster.

This opinion of course is in a vacuum, without any knowledge of Switch 2 software. I am sure once I see the new games, I may falter on my word…

Re: Switch's Falling Sales Aren't Entirely Down To Switch 2 Hype, Says Furukawa

Hwatt

Ignoring the Switch 2 (hardware) it’s also hard to justify a purchase of a Switch when the software appeal is dramatically reducing. Every 7 year old and their uncle knows the new Zelda, Mario, Smash, Animal Crossing, Kart will be on Switch 2… The software line up for 2024 on Switch was just OK IMO (when compared to 2023) and it’s hard to look forward to 2025 when we only really know that Metroid Prime 4 and Pokemon are on the horizon.

If they want to bump revenue and unit sales between now and transition period with Switch 2 (next 2 years) drop the price…

Switch OLED -> $299
Switch OG -> $249
Switch Light -> $179

Make sure every switch comes with Mario Kart 8 pre-installed while you’re at it.

Re: Astral Chain Director Seemingly Forms New Studio After Leaving PlatinumGames

Hwatt

I stopped reading at “HR department deprived of lighting for months”

Clearly there is some context lost because at face value, it would be extremely unlikely a specific business function was deprived of light in favour of saving money. The amount of savings ($) from turning off lighting in a building, for a specific team of maybe 8-16 people, would likely reduce total operating costs by less that 0.01%.

Salaries, perks, lease / rent, IT purchases, servers, software licenses, etc. would far succeed the cost to power a few lights. What a load of nonsense.

Who knows, maybe the majority of the info is true but I can’t treat it seriously.

Re: Round Up: 'Switch 2' Renders Suggest A Sleek, Classy Successor

Hwatt

@TheBoilerman

Slow? It’s the second week of January and we’ve just witnessed an unprecedented onslaught of leaks. Even Nintendo’s response doesn’t rule them out.

I’ve never seen such leaks before in the console space and regardless of an individuals interest, Nintendolife has been on top of it.

Re: 'Switch 2' Replica Showcased By Accessory Maker Genki At CES 2025

Hwatt

When there’s smoke there’s fire.

I suspect once they announce the Super Switch / Switch 2 / Swatch it will be available for purchase within the following month. There is no way this isn’t mass produced, there must be some 3-5 million units ready to go. Next leak will the retail box at this rate.

Re: Rumour: New 'Switch 2' Leak Suggests Console Will Require A 60W Charger

Hwatt

Puns aside, if the Switch 2 is based on 8nm Ampere like all the rumours suggest, it’s likely the extra power (contingency) is due to the power challenges with that node. See Gamers Nexus deep dive on Ampere transient spikes from ~ 3 years ago for context. Of course to blame the node alone isn’t telling the full story, but either way, just because it’s “rated” to draw X power doesn’t mean it will.

Re: Accessory Maker Genki To Discuss 'Switch 2' Info And Products At CES 2025

Hwatt

That’s the gimmick of the new Switch. It’s not Nintendo who announces the console. It’s everyone else!

They Switched the logic to solve the issue with scalpers. Consumers will one day just find them at their retailers, in mass supply Accessories will have been released for months. Even new games will be available on their new eshop.

Soon we’ll see directs and they will roll right into software announcements. Without ever acknowledging or dropping info directly.

IT’S GENIUS! The scalpers will never know what hit them…

Re: GTA Trilogy Update Removes Dev From Splash Screen, CEO Responds

Hwatt

Double standards, they plague the industry.

Everyone needs to remember that there is a symbiotic relationship between developers and publishers at this scale.

Rockstar Games sold over 200m copies of GTA V. It regularly tracks on the top 20 games sold in the US, and along side their parent company, Take Two, generates billions annually. GTA V and GTA Online being key components to that revenue.

Whether Grove Street Games (GSG) is responsible for the poor state of the ports is irrelevant considering the brand and market context. Rockstar should not have let it go out in that state. They’re accountable and need to accept that.

Unless the splash screen was causing performance issues, it should remain as is. If Rockstar is removing the splash screen, especially after the developers are working hard to fix issues, it sounds like double standards.

Critically, we need to understand if the removal was intentional and if so, why.

Re: Best Mario Party Games Of All Time

Hwatt

I’ve got little to add here. Mario Party 3 is my favourite.

Mario Party 2 has the most nostalgia because that was the game my friend at the time had and is automatically associated with those hangouts.

Gamecube era is a bit of a blur. I can’t tell you what differentiates 4, 5, and 6. It’s been way too long since I have played. I enjoyed playing but never purchased.

The rest looked sort of meh and I don’t have vivid memories of playing all the mainlines but I believe so. I know I skipped Super Mario Party all together.

I only got back into the franchise with Superstars but admittedly haven’t played it enough. Eager to give Jamboree time when.. I have time. In no rush.

Im just happy Mario Party is back in the limelight.

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Super Mario Party Jamboree?

Hwatt

Reading through the comments, this sounds like a new Mario party not bogged down by gimmicks like Super Mario Party.

I’m not ready to throw down $80 CAD + tax but I hope to add it to my collection one day.

I only own Mario Party 3 on N64 and Superstars, and pretty much played them all elsewhere except Super Mario Party. I find this series only works at certain moments in a period of time. Either when group hangouts are frequently on rotation or rather, you’re fully committed in single player mode. The latter is much more difficult today given all the other excellent single player games out there.

Long winded way to say, I’ll pass until there is a “sale” or plan on hosting a party where I know people will play. Glad it’s reviewing so well

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (28th September)

Hwatt

@SuperRetroArt

If anything, it’s the opposite. I’m rather proud to be at a stage where if I am on a flight, I’ll buckle up into Zelda. I’ve played a lot of BotW on long haul 8hrs+ flights.

Beyond Switch, I don’t have any other mobile device that I game on so it’s hard to contrast. If for example I had a Steam deck and was playing a more mature looking game, would that impact how I feel others perceive me? My answer: No.

Re: Talking Point: So Then, Is This 'Switch 2' Leak Legit?

Hwatt

@Pillowpants

They will drag it out, strategically. They have lots of software on Switch to push out and it wouldn't be wise to announce a new console ahead of the holiday season, especially with release date and software, when it wont be ready for the holiday season.

Earliest you'll get an update is January. Latest is March 31st. The details of the update... time will tell.

Re: Nintendo Announces Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom In-Store Switch Demo

Hwatt

A good way to market to younger demographics. Not might the best, exclusive way to market a demo for Zelda, considering there is a very large demographic of people aged 30-50 (OG Zelda fans) who wouldn’t drive to a mall for a demo.

Either way, I support the return of demos and specifically, demo kiosks at physical stores.

I remember playing Zelda OoT at a kiosk inside Dairy Queen when I was very young. That memory is vivid and was one of the first times I played N64. It was one of the factors that led me to ask for the console.

Re: 8BitDo Is Now Selling NES-Style Keycaps

Hwatt

@IceClimbersMain

OH! I have the NES keyboard and loved it since launch but it’s my first keyboard without a numb pad. I had no idea they sold a separate numb pad! Thanks! I hate using Excel or Google Sheets without a numb pad.

Re: Rare 'Nintendo Dolphin' GameCube Prototype Re-emerges On Social Media

Hwatt

@Folkloner Prototypes are likely easily tracked since so few were produced. If ones were sold directly by Nintendo to a third party, there was likely very strong legal requirements.

Given it's been 20+ years and multiple console generations have passed, its unlikely that Nintendo would up hold those terms. A lot of assumptions and if's but better to be safe than sorry.

Re: Poll: Are You Ready To Move On From The Switch?

Hwatt

Im excited but I may wait depending on initial availability, screen quality, and cost.

I don’t mind jumping in early if my back log is improved (performance, resolution, or any other functionality). If it’s the same experience, I think I will wait.

First adopters usually have growing pains.
