Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (November 11th)

GregamanX

@Nf157 You're very welcome. Fire Punch is by Fujimoto, who made Chainsaw Man. Keep in mind its darker in theme, and not as based around humour. It's still excellent. Dorohedoro is dark and comedic like Chainsaw Man, but not as action-heavy (there's still some good action though). It's got an art style closest to Chainsaw Man with its scratchy/gritty art. Dandadan is closest in terms of writing, action and humour to Chainsaw Man. It's got dark and crazy creature designs reminiscent of Berserk or some of the Chainsaw Man devils. Finally, if you like Chainsaw Man's action scenes, Sakamoto Days hits just as hard and awesome, and even trumps them in my opinion. The only thing is, it's rather light in tone, but the comedy is really there. Once you get around the third volume, the action starts to ramp up to absolute insanity. Hope this all helps.

Sorry to everyone about all the manga talk in a gaming thread. I'll end it at that. 😂

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (November 11th)

GregamanX

@Nf157 Yeah, I got into manga a couple years ago and my gaming has slowed down, but I would call it more balanced. It's good to switch it up between two hobbies. Chainsaw Man and Berserk are excellent. I would recommend Fire Punch if you like Chainsaw Man. Also Dandadan and Dorohedoro as they have a similar tone to Chainsaw Man (dark/funny). Oh, and Sakamoto Days for pure action craziness. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure happens to be my personal favourite series.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (November 11th)

GregamanX

I somehow don't see lot of gaming for me this weekend. I've been getting pretty burned out on gaming lately, and more into reading manga. Especially after I splurged on this giant 30% off sale at Indigo books last weekend. So I've got a huge book backlog that I would rather tackle.

Still, if I do play anything, it'll be the Quake 2 expansion, Call of the Machine. Holy crap, I didn't expect it to be so difficult. I've made it through one of the episodes last weekend, and I didn't expect hordes of bazillions of the strongest types of enemies to flood from every inch of each level while I'm given barely enough ammo to deal with them all. It's still fun, but kind of overwhelming at times. Makes me a little gun shy to jump back in.

Oh yeah, and the final Mario Kart 8 tracks. I'll play those with my family.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (November 4th)

GregamanX

I ended up finally finishing Shin Megami Tensei V last Sunday, after 6 big weekends of play. I'm in the mood for much shorter experiences. I booted up The Takeover, which I only paid a few bucks for on sale long ago. It's pretty fun so far, but a bit repetitive even for beat em up standards. I may also play the Quake 2 expansions soon, and possibly a few arcade games like Black Widow Remastered or Yars Revenge Remastered.

Re: Review: Star Ocean: The Second Story R - One Of The Very Best RPGs Of The Year

GregamanX

This is still to this day, one of my favourite JRPGs of all time, and I encourage everyone to give it a shot.

Also, for anyone saying the game isn't challenging...try unlocking the harder version of the final boss. The fight was so ridiculously challenging for me back on the PS1 (even at max lvl 255) that I had to restart it years later and beat the regular final boss, just so I could finish it (I unlocked the true final boss by accident back then). But that's a testament to how good the game is. Despite accidently roadblocking myself, I wanted to play the whole game again because it was that good (tip: if the same thing ever happens to you, remember to use the bunny ears accessory. The item was more important than leveling up for me).

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (October 28th)

GregamanX

I'll be trying to wrap up Shin Megami Tensei V this weekend if I can. I'm in the last dungeon, just trying to level up and fuse some useful demons for the endgame. It may take until next weekend at most, but I feel like I'm on the home stretch. Also, some Splatoon 3 splatfest wherever I can fit that in.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (October 21st)

GregamanX

Still playing Shin Megami Tensei V exclusively on the weekends. I just made it to the 4th and final area, although I heard there's a difficulty spike around this point, so it may take awhile to finish. Still, it feels like I'm heading for the home stretch after nearly 2 months with this one. I do wish I could be playing Mario Wonder, but I'm asking for it as a birthday gift in February, so that'll be something to look forward to, I guess.

Re: Poll: So, Will You Be Getting Super Mario Bros. Wonder?

GregamanX

I'll be waiting awhile on mine. I always get a game as a gift on my birthday in February, so I've chosen it as the one to ask for. It doesn't really bother me though. While I would like to play it and be caught up in all the hype, at its core, it's still just a 2D Mario. I can easily wait a little under 4 months to play it.

Re: Review: Sonic Superstars - A Fine, Authentic-Feeling Return That Runs Great On Switch

GregamanX

@roy130390 The difficulty spikes I heard were mostly in relation to boss fights. I heard of boss fights being dragged out far too long with long stretches where you're left doing nothing but dodging and unable to attack the bosses (with also one or two of them having instant kill moves). To top it off, I heard the final boss is an absolute nightmare in frustration, and personally for me, a horrible final boss can destroy my thoughts on a game, ending with feelings of frustration and bitterness that sticks with me for years.

Re: Review: Sonic Superstars - A Fine, Authentic-Feeling Return That Runs Great On Switch

GregamanX

I didn't see much talk about bad level design and difficulty spikes, which are huge knocks against the game from other sources that I've heard about. These elements reek of Arzest to me (I'm thinking Yoshi's Island DS, which I hated), along with frustrating boss fights, very situational power ups and stages that go on too long. Combine that with chaotic non-split screen co-op and the main selling point to me even seems broken. Like I said, it's what I've heard from other sources. I want to believe there are good points here, but I personally don't think it'll be an enjoyable experience for me, so I'm going to have to pass on this one.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (October 14th)

GregamanX

Shin Megami Tensei V for me still. I'm on the third major area, and for some reason I've only been playing on the weekends. But when I've been playing, I BINGE on it. I've been only playing over 3 weekends but I've amassed about 30 hours. I think I heard that there are only 4 major areas, so I don't think I'm doing too bad. It's a lot of fun so far. Hopefully it stays that way the whole way through.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (October 7th)

GregamanX

I'm still riding the Shin Megami Tensei V train this weekend. It's an odd experience. The game works great for bite-sized play, yet I never feel like playing it (or anything for that matter) during the workweek. Then I binge ton of it on the weekends. I've been so wiped after work that I only feel like reading manga in the evenings lately. So it will probably take me some time to finish this one, although I'm already 20 hours in after 2 weeks. I think trying F-Zero 99 is still going to have to wait.

Re: Soapbox: 'Switch 2' Doesn't Really Need Backwards Compatibility

GregamanX

Um...yes, IT DOES. If they want the giant install base of the original Switch to carry over, they'd better offer backwards compatibility. There's no way I'm buying my whole library again on a new system, and it would be nice to preserve said library on a console with a better battery/no joycon drift/better quality of life features. Not to mention, I'm sure once the Switch battery dies, that's it. You can't even play it attached to a dock or from an outlet on a completely dead battery. So I'd rather not have my giant library vanish into the ether someday. I know that I won't be purchasing a Switch 2 anytime soon if it isn't backward compatible. No way will I financially support such a smug "deal with it" move on Nintendo's part.

Re: Soapbox: What Do You Do When Nintendo Ticks Off Your ENTIRE Most-Wanted List?

GregamanX

All I truly want is the Halo: Master Chief Collection ported to Switch. Nintendo was all friendly with Microsoft, and that would be a godlike move. My wife and I's first game played together was Halo. It was a real ice breaker and is a super important title in our lives. The only other thing I would be desperate to see is the Commander Keen Collection. I've always loved those games (especially 4 and 5), but they would be next to impossible titles to ever see gracing a console. As for something from Nintendo, just give me an official Starfox 64 2. No gimmicks, just a true sequel to that game and I would be eating good.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (September 30th)

GregamanX

Pretty much the same as last week for me. I'll be playing more Shin Megami Tensei V. I put in 11 hours last weekend from Thurs to Sun, but I haven't played it all week. I'll have the house to myself for 4 to 6 hours, so I plan to put in a good chunk of time into the game today. I may also try booting up F-Zero 99. I never got the chance last weekend, but if SMTV gets its hooks in me deep, it may just have to wait some more.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (September 23rd)

GregamanX

I started up Shin Megami Tensei V on Thursday night, so I imagine it's what I'll be mainly playing this weekend, and possibly every weekend for the rest of the year if it hooks me enough. I'm enjoying what I've been playing so far. I may play some N++ or give F Zero 99 a try if I have some spare moments where I want to play something else.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (September 16th)

GregamanX

I'll probably be playing some smaller games this weekend, since I'll be so busy. I may give Bubble Bobble 4 Friends and/or Burgertime Party a try, and probably a little bit of N++ on the side. I've beaten most of my major releases. I only have Shin Megami Tensei V left on the horizon, but I'm going to wait a little bit longer on it, so I have a longer game to play during the last few months of the year.

Re: Team Shiver Walks Away With Another Win In Splatoon 3's Latest Splatfest

GregamanX

I literally just pick Shiver now, no matter what, because I know that's what the winning team will usually be (unless its a topic I'm passionate about defending even though I will probably lose). So yeah, I went with Shiver. However, Shiver is my daughter's favourite host, so i really didnt mind representing. It did seem like Frye was going to win early on though. Everyone on that side was quite tough, and Big Man's team really held their own too.

Re: Talking Point: What Do You Want From A 'Splatoon 4'?

GregamanX

That's funny, my family and I were talking about Splatoon 4 yesterday and we didnt even see this article.

First of all, matchmaking and disconnects just need to be fixed. Splatoon 3 has no sense of how to match players of like-minded skill, and often you're thrown against A and S rankers in turf war when you're a C player. It can become extremely frustrating. Disconnects and drops are incredibly annoying too. They really need to replace people who drop with an A.I substitute of at least moderate skill.

I would love to see other players actually walking around town and interacting with each other. The city needs to come alive. Even give players some little minigames to partake in, like some kind of volleyball, where you hit a massive volleyball around with your weapons or something. Maybe bring in apartments too.

A new race would be cool. I thought of a shark too, but manta rays or jellyfish could possibly work as well. New weapon types and specials would be nice, but it's hard to think up ideas. I thought of a gun similar to a flamethrower (or power washer) could be different enough. Also, a nuke type missile for a special that could be remote controlled like Unreal Tournament, but would take 2 or 3 times longer than a normal special to fill up (but the area coverage would be massive). We dont just need variations of guns, bombs and specials. We need a lot of new ideas.

Better stage design would be nice as well. I think 2 had superior stage design to 3. I also think Tricolor (or a new Quadcolour) battles should be selectable whenever you want. Tricolor is my favorite type of battle for 3 and it's always reserved for Splatfests. And at LEAST add in a third map for the map rotation. And when a new map is released, showcase it more often and done just bury it. I haven't even played any of the newly released maps yet, and I play quite often.

Also, what about a male/female idol duo, or possibly all male for a change? And better hair choices for the male inklings/octolings. The males always seem to get the short end of the design stick. The female designs are always considerably better, so it would be nice to see some attention given to the other half of the audience.

Also, all the multiplayer needs to be available offline, with as many local players that can connect their switch type consoles, or even have a 2v2 local mode with splitscreen. Have bots able to fill in for the players offline. Make this so people can enjoy the whole game when not near an internet connection, and for when online modes become unavailable in the far future. Oooh, and I LOVED someone's idea about co-op mode for single player.

There are so many things that could be added, but I think its gonna be mostly a bunch of smaller stuff. Keeping the core gameplay is going to be important, but its gotta be a LOT of smaller changes that can snowball into something massive that will make Splatoon 4 stand out.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (September 9th)

GregamanX

I'll be mainly playing some Splatoon 3 splatfest with my daughter (Team Shiver), along with picking at some N++ over time (which I picked up on a recent sale and I'm really enjoying it so far). I want to jump into a game that's a little more substantial soon, like Quake 64, or even play some more Fight n Rage with my wife, but this weekend is going to be quite busy with outings, so that may have to wait for some other time.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (September 2nd)

GregamanX

After dropping a couple of games last week (Crosscode and Under Dungeon), I need a better fresh start for this weekend. I'm still hooked on Vampire Survivors, I may play some more Keywe with my wife, and I have an assortment of small arcade titles I may jump into. But if I'm looking for something a bit more substantial, I may play Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon, or even Quake 64 in the Quake 2 Remaster (since I know that will be a safe bet).

Re: Cat Quest III Sets Sail With "Furrst" Gameplay Trailer

GregamanX

I'm actually super excited for this one, and it's a shame Cat Quest doesn't have a bigger audience. The games have this addictive gameplay loop that's chill, while engaging at the same time. I would recommend to anyone to pick up a Cat Quest game while it's on one of their super cheap sales before writing off this franchise. I'll purrsonally be looking forward to picking Cat Quest 3 up when it launches.

Re: Review: Sea Of Stars - An Instant Classic, So Much More Than A Chrono Trigger Throwback

GregamanX

I was really excited for this one because I love The Messenger, I love RPGs and I love Chrono Trigger, but I did not like the demo. Combat felt too long and slow, enemies did way too much damage, it took way too many battles to level up, and the boss fight at the end of the dungeon was gruelling and went on forever. Plus, the writing was not my cup of tea, and I didn't find the puzzles or exploration that rewarding. It has a beautiful sprite style, I'll give it that. But yeah, a 9/10 review isn't convincing me that it will be much different than the tedious experience I had. Seems like this is one RPG that just isn't for me (maybe it's too much like SNES RPGs, which I'm not a fan of, other than Chrono Trigger. That tells me that most people will probably like it).

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (August 26th)

GregamanX

After giving Crosscode a break (it's alright, I may jump into it sporadically, but I need something shorter right now), I decided to boot up a game that I picked up on sale for $2 - Under Dungeon. Its a nice little Zelda-like game with a Gato Roboto/Downwell aesthetic and cute writing. Its pretty fun so far. I may also dabble in a little more Vampire Survivors, and possibly some Splatoon 2 and 3 with my kid.

Re: The Next Xenoblade Will Be "Vastly Different" Says Monolith Soft Director

GregamanX

A Xenoblade MMO would be amazing, or perhaps the addition of drop in and out multiplayer. Gameplay-wise, its pretty much perfect. I would love to see mechs again Xenoblade X. Also, I would like more interesting side quests...just less of them. Maybe quests could be better written, more immersive and have more voicework like the Hero quests in 3.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (August 19th)

GregamanX

I just beat the main campaign to Quake 2 last night (absolutely incredible game. One of my favourites this year). I'll have to play the expansions and Quake 64 soon, but first I want to give Vampire Survivors a try to see if it hooks me like so many others. I wish I could be playing Bomb Rush Cyberfunk too, but $50 is too expensive for me right now. I'm wishlisting it though, so hopefully someday I'll get around to trying it.

Re: Review: Moving Out 2 - More Creative Couch-Throwing From Your Favourite F.A.R.T.s

GregamanX

@SMGstudio Unfortunately, we played the game at launch, so the time extend and skip modes weren't available. While I do appreciate assist modes, it would have been better if those levels weren't so unforgiving. I think it's more important to iron out the rough edges beforehand rather than providing a band-aid after the damage has been done. It's good to hear that the sequel tones it down, but we're very particular about a smooth difficulty curve, so I don't think we'll be biting a second time. Perhaps if we ended up playing the sequel as our first Moving Out experience our opinion would be different, but wow...I'm still salty about those guava juice levels all of these years later. And yes, solo is usually harder than co-op, but it was literally the only way I was able to pass those levels at the time.

Anyway, sorry, this wasnt meant to come off as a rageful post or anything. I hope things have improved for your sequel, I really do. We really did love the first half of the original game, so hopefully if the sequel as a whole is closer to that, maybe we might try it on a sale someday.

Re: Review: Moving Out 2 - More Creative Couch-Throwing From Your Favourite F.A.R.T.s

GregamanX

After playing through the first game, I dont trust review scores for the sequel. It was good for the most part, but those guava juice levels were so incredibly frustrating and downright impossible in co op (I had to finish them solo because there was literally zero room for error and you would have to essentially be telepathic to maneuver just right through everything). The difficulty spike was legendary and almost ruined the whole game for my wife and I. I have a feeling that most reviewers only played the first half and slapped a number on it. So yeah, that killed my interest in a sequel (which is a real shame because I love the concept and first half of the original).

Re: Team Money Claims Victory In Splatoon 3's Priorities-Themed Splatfest

GregamanX

I knew Team Money was going to win, because seemingly all of the best players pick Shiver no matter what. That being said, I still went with Team Love since that's what my family values more. I'll probably pick Shiver for representing topics I don't care about either way, but the point is to pick the side you want to fight for, right? I'm still glad I went for Team Love. I had a great time playing with my kid and that's my win at the end of the day.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (August 12th)

GregamanX

I'll have the house to myself for half a day for the first time in a very long time, so I bought Quake II to binge during that time. Old school FPS games are like a comfort food for me, and Quake II is one that I've missed, so I'm really looking forward to it.

I may also play some more Crosscode this weekend. I'm at the first main dungeon and there is a LOT of puzzles, but I'm not overwhelmed yet. I've actually been having a lot of fun so far.

Oh, and possibly some Splatoon 3 splatfest. My daughter picked Team Love, so naturally that's what I'll be going with. I know I could pick Team Money, since Shiver normally wins, but Love is obviously more important for my family, so I'll be representing.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (August 5th)

GregamanX

I'm halfway through Oracle of Seasons, so probably that. The first 3 dungeons and journeys leading up to them were fine, but starting with the journey to the 4th dungeon..things are getting unnecessarily cryptic and just not fun. I hope the game can turn itself around, but I'm losing confidence. I'll also try to play some more Keywe with my wife. If I dump Oracle of Seasons (or beat it), I may start up some Crosscode next.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (July 29th)

GregamanX

If I can get the time, I'll be trying to finish up Nobody Saves The World. It's been fun for the most part, but the late game has required too much grinding, and now I'm starting to feel a little burned out. I'm in the final area though, so I may as well try to push for the finish line.

EDIT: There! I just beat it. A really good game overall, even though it's a bit long in the tooth.

After this, I'll have to make the decision to play Crosscode or SMTV. Or possibly a smaller game of a different genre, but I really don't know if I have a good palette cleanser on hand. I may play some Keywe with my wife, or Splatoon 2 with my kid, if anything.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (July 22nd)

GregamanX

Mostly Nobody Saves The World. I'm around halfway or so through, and its growing on me more as time goes on. At first, I found it a little overwhelming with the amount of quests there were to do, but now I'm finding myself hooked for play sessions that last hours on end. I may also play a little Keywe with my wife tonight as well. The game is cute and interesting, but I can only handle it in smaller bursts, as some missions get particularly stressful.
