Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (June 25th)

GregamanX

Probably some more TMNT Shredder's Revenge with my wife and daughter. I beat the game with just my wife last weekend, but I'll be going through the rest of it with my whole family this time. It's such an awesome game, topping the arcade games for sure.
Also, my vacation starts now, so I may buy the regular NSO for my wife and I and play some Splatoon 2 and Fall Guys throughout the week.

Re: Talking Point: Should Sonic Frontiers Be Delayed? We Discuss Its Bizarre Debut And Fan Reaction

GregamanX

I think it should be scrapped. I know it's a harsh opinion, but I really feel like its beyond saving at this point and will only reinforce the fact that Sonic Team can't release good games anymore. I really don't know why Sonic Mania 2 was such a hard concept to grasp. And I don't know why new 3D Sonic games have to be tarnished with all of these new ideas/gimmicks/copied formulas from other games. Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 were pretty good starts, and the only 2 games that ran with the closest things to traditional formulas (Colors and Generations) were the best ones since. I don't know why it's so hard to take those formulas, and take time with evolving and polishing them.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (June 4th)

GregamanX

For the first time, probably nothing. I've barely played anything in the last month. Last weekend was literally a few games of Super Puzzle Fighter 2 with my wife, and now...I just don't know. I've had Slay the Spire on my maybe list, but I never ended up playing it last weekend, so I'm not sure about this one. Really, it's just time for a break for me. I'm full blown into another hobby of reading manga, so I'm hoping when I come back to gaming someday, it will be a lot more fresh and exciting.

Re: Sonic Frontiers Gameplay Showcases A Pretty, But Sparse Open World

GregamanX

Oh no...this looks so STIFF and CLUNKY...and slow (with the exception of Sonic needing boost pads, rails and springs to get decent speed going). I've only watched 2.5 minutes so far, but the game just seems to chug framerate-wise, which is making it hard to watch. The environment feels bland, those coins and rings should honestly be magnetized to Sonic since this isnt precise, and I'm just not seeing anything that feels interesting or screams, "PLAY ME". And I've been a Sonic fan all my life. But I've managed to avoid most of the duds at this point, and so far, I'm not very impressed with what I see. I'll try watching some more of the video, but ugh, its ROUGH. Not trying to rain on anyone's parade who is excited for it.

EDIT: I've made it to the 4th minute. Where are the freaking enemies? And it just feels like there's no cohesion with rails and springs spread haphazardly around the place.

Made it to the 5th minute...😣...really? A bland puzzle that requires rotating a single statue in line with the others and a "blow out the torches" style of puzzle? What is this?

6th minute - this aimless running around really lacks cohesion. There dont appear to be any memorable landmarks or routes that feel worth exploring.

7th minute - so I guess these sign posts are supposed to be the equivalent of BOTW shrines? But with much less interesting types of puzzles that we've seen a million times in plenty of other games?

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (May 28th)

GregamanX

This is getting tougher every week because I've been playing less. I played some Super Puzzle Fighter with my wife on my Big Blue A1up last night. She's the puzzle expert, but I've finally caught up to her in terms of skill, which was nice. I may play a little Slay the Spire as well if I have a batch of time. It's the next game that I really want to get into.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (May 21st)

GregamanX

After beating Going Under last weekend (which was incredible), I still have a taste for roguelikes, so if I play anything, it might be Dicey Dungeons or Slay the Spire. Perhaps more post game Kirby content with my kid or some Arcade 1up games if i can too, but i haven't been playing many games lately, so I'll be surprised if i get much time in. I'll probably still mostly be reading manga since that's what I've been into lately.

Re: Feature: Aggro Crab Tells Us All About Their Clawsome New Game, 'Another Crab's Treasure'

GregamanX

Funny timing. I just beat Going Under this weekend, and I absolutely loved it. I'll definitely have to play this one. Hopefully it's like a beginner's version of dark souls, if that makes any sense (a game that eases people into the playstyle a bit more than the Souls games). How can I resist playing as a crab that looks oh so fierce? So much more badbum than Dark Souls! 😂

Re: Review: Snow Bros. Nick & Tom Special - A Tired Bubble Bobble-Alike That's Finally Affordable

GregamanX

@FNL I agree with you. I've always found Snow Bros to be a blast. I could understand maybe giving it a 6, saying it's not for everyone, but a 4 is downright calling it a BAD game, which I think this doesn't even come close to. Maybe some old games don't hold up to certain people, but unless the game was viewed as awful on it's release, I don't think it's really fair to trash this one. It seems like a labour of love that was brought to a niche audience.

Really, I find this game like a more accessible Bubble Bobble. If there's one thing I can complain about Bubble Bobble, it's that one level where you have to precisely jump on your bubbles to reach the top. I would actually recommend this game to younger audiences.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (May 14th)

GregamanX

I'm right before the final boss of Going Under, so I'll probably try to finish that. It's an incredibly fun and underrated roguelite. I heard complaints about it being punishing, but there are assist options that give you more hearts and stuff, which makes the game a smoother ride while still retaining some challenge. I may also do a bit more of the Kirby and the Forgotten Land post game content with my daughter as well.

Re: Nintendo Says It Wants To Avoid A Repeat Of Wii U With Switch's Successor

GregamanX

Adding backward compatibility for the Switch 2 (for both physical games and from eshop purchases from the Switch), would make for a much smoother transition. I'm not really up for buying a Switch 2 anytime soon, but if it were backward compatible, I would definitely buy one. Then maybe I can enjoy my original switch library without the fear of neverending joycon drift or a dead battery bricking my console.

Also, I would love to have an ability to have a window that I can open in the corner of my screen to watch what a friend is playing online while I play games. Combine that with voice chat, and it could make a switch successor a real social experience. But Nintendo is so behind the times that I would never expect it to happen.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (April 30th)

GregamanX

Currently enjoying the game, "My Horrible Neighbors are Moving After 2 Years of Misery". Probably the best game I've ever played. Would easily give it a 10/10. I also promised myself that if they ever moved, I would try going without screens for a month, so...no video games for a month for me starting tomorrow. Gonna see what that's like. Maybe I'll have a new appreciation for games when i come out of it. I could really use it since I've been quite blah about games lately.

I can play stuff today though, so if I do, it's going to be some more Going Under. I've really been enjoying this silly little roguelite. I'm about halfway through it. I just got to the part where I have to do harder versions of the dungeons.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (April 23rd)

GregamanX

Before I mention what I'm playing this weekend, I have to talk about the most notable game I've beaten that happened on Thursday: Kirby and the Forgotten Land. Not only does it count as my 700th game beaten since the start of 2009 (yes, I've been keeping track), it's also the first game I've beaten in co-op with my 7 year old daughter. The final boss was especially epic, because I didn't choose a very suitable ability (Ranger), and we had an incredibly close battle, where I had only 1 tiny sliver of health left when we delivered the final blow. One more hit and we would have lost. It was so down to the wire, and it made it all the more satisfying that we were high fiving, and she was so incredibly excited with our victory. This is what gaming is all about.

Now that I've beaten my 700th game since 2009, I've essentially beaten my backlog again. I've pretty much decided to kind of hang up gaming in a way. By that, I mean not staying so aggressively caught up with game releases and always beating the next big thing that comes out. I've also been invested in a new hobby - manga. It's where I've been putting most of my disposable income lately, and I've been getting a lot more enjoyment out of relaxing with it. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Haikyu, Dr. Stone, My Hero Academia, Spy x Family and Chainsaw Man have been a joy to read and collect so far for me.

That's not to say I'm quitting gaming all together. There's a trickle of releases I'll pick up this year (Klonoa 1 & 2, TMNT Shredder's Revenge, Sonic Origins and I'm still waiting on my Limited Run release of Windjammers 2). I also aim to play more of my 3/4 arcades, play some more roguelites, replay some games I love and play some more multiplayer games with my family. I may even subscribe again to NSO and play some online games (possibly Splatoon 2 if I have the time, and if that takes off, MAYBE Splatoon 3). But I'm done my big journey towards playing as many new things as possible. I'm satisfied.

As for the actual topic, I do actually have a couple of games I havent played much that I intend to play this weekend, which are Going Under and Slay the Spire. I'm not focused on beating them, since victory in roguelites is never really guaranteed, but now that I've made it to 700 games, I'm going to dive into these just to play them. And man, these are some fun little games, I'll tell you that much. I also plan to play a little more Kirby, by mopping up those challenges to get new upgrades, and play the post game content with my kid.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (April 16th)

GregamanX

After beating Dragon Quest XI last weekend, I've decided to play some shorter games from this point on. I'm playing through some fighters on my Neo Geo MVSX (I beat KOF 98 yesterday and experienced the cheapest fighting game final boss that I've ever faced). I'll probably play some Samurai Showdown and a few others, as well as some Metal Slug 5 with my wife. I tried a little bit of Sine Mora EX on my Switch yesterday as well. Not sure if I'll stick with it because it's ridiculously difficult. And if there's any other different games to play on my switch, ill play Dicey Dungeons, Slay the Spire or Going Under. Oh, and maybe some Kirby and the Forgotten Land with my daughter.

Re: Feature: Which Is The Absolute Best Nintendo Console Generation?

GregamanX

For me, it's easily the N64 (I didnt even have a game boy back then). Even though I've been gaming since the NES, the N64 holds the most precious gaming memories to me. Playing Mario 64 for 8 months straight as my only game, and never getting tired of it. Endless multiplayer days with Goldeneye, Mario Kart 64, Diddy Kong Racing and Bomberman 64. Being blown away by Starfox 64 and Ocarina of Time. Just those games alone, and that time of gaming in my life is a period that can never be beaten.

Re: PS2 Classic 'GrimGrimoire OnceMore' Announced For Switch

GregamanX

Oh my God! YESSSS!!! Out of all of the Vanillaware games, Grimgrimoire needed a second chance the most! I mean, Odin Sphere and Muramasa got remakes on the PS4 and Vita years ago, while this was left in the dust on the PS2. It's an underrated gem! Think of a time traveling Harry Potter-like story, with awesome characters and voice acting. It's got this 2D RTS style of gameplay with multiple difficulties, so its accessible to newcomers like me, but can be challenging for veterans of the genre. I HIGHLY recommend this one. I'll definitely be buying it.

EDIT: I just re-read the article...Japan only??? COME ON! 😫. It better come to the west soon.

Re: Talking Point: Is It Ever A Good Idea To Start At 'The Beginning' Of Series Like Zelda Or Dragon Quest?

GregamanX

As someone who has played through his first Dragon Quest game over the last month (Dragon Quest XI), I highly recommend starting there. There's no deep story connections to the past games that will spoil anything. And for me, my reasoning was that if it's my first entry into a series, I would rather play the best entry, rather than have a bad first impression on an earlier entry and lose interest in the series altogether. XI simply had all the qualities that I wanted in a first title to play of the franchise. I'm not a fan of older RPGs from the NES and SNES so the first 6 games were out. I heard VII was too long, VIII has so many random battles (and is developed by Level 5, a developer I DO NOT like), IX is a coop experience, and X is Japan and online exclusive. So XI was the most logical game for me to play. I probably won't play another entry simply because I'm falling out of long games and RPGs, but I'm glad I chose this one, as I was pleasantly surprised, and as a possible last new RPG for a very long while, it went out with a bang, and I'll fondly associate good memories with the series.

Also, I hear Dragon Quest is a very consistent series. Possibly the most consistent series of all time. The general gameplay of all of the games is this classic/antiquated gameplay style, so chances are if you like the newest entry and you want more, the older entries shouldn't be too difficult to get into (unless you're like me and the random battles of the old games seem like a dealbreaker.

At the end of the day, I wouldn't look into older entries of a series that way. It seems too much like work. Just play the entry that looks the most appealing. Chances are, that one will be your favourite of the series, but it doesn't mean that you can't appreciate other entries as well. And if you can't get into the other games, I dont believe its a fault of playing the best entries first. Chances are they wouldn't have been your type of game no matter what order you played them in.

Re: Backlog Club: Week Zero - Hello, And Welcome To Backlog Club

GregamanX

Looks like I'm a couple weeks early to this feature. I intend to play Slay the Spire in a few weeks, but my rule for my backlog is to play out 1 or 2 games at a time until I beat them (currently on Dragon Quest XI and Kirby and the Forgotten Land). Slay the Spire is next though, so I can say that I'm definitely excited to finally play it. Although roguelikes are hard ones to intentionally knock out of a backlog. Since I'll have caught all up with my backlog after these 2 games, I'm going to juggle Slay the Spire, Going Under and Dicey Dungeons. Not expecting to beat any of them, but I'll just be playing them for fun.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (April 9th)

GregamanX

I'm almost 50 hours into Dragon Quest XI after starting it 2.5 weeks ago. I've got a big chunk of today to myself, so I'm going to try putting a bigger dent into it. I imagine I'll get some Kirby and the Forgotten Land time in with my daughter in co-op. We just made it to what I believe is the last world. She absolutely loves this game and I think it may now be my favourite Kirby game of all time.

Re: Review: 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim - A Rich Narrative Adventure/RTS Hybrid With Outstanding Art

GregamanX

I totally recommend buying it and supporting Vanillaware. Maybe with luck, we can get the other titles on Switch, like Dragon's Crown, Muramasa, Grimgrimoire...ODIN SPHERE.

I played it in February of last year, and it was one of the best games I played in 2021. It has a LOT of reading, but the story and how it shifts between 13 protagonists is fantastic, and the battles are even quite a bit of fun, even though I thought they looked like they were going to be boring at first.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (April 2nd)

GregamanX

I'm 32 hours into Dragon Quest XI after 2 weeks of play, so I'll continue with that. Not really sure how to feel about it. It's pretty good, but will I still have the same feelings when I've put twice as many hours in? Who knows?

Aside from that, I'll play more Kirby and the Forgotten Land with my daughter. We just made it to the 4th world last night, and while she doesn't really have a large interest in video games, she loves playing this one with me.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (March 26th)

GregamanX

I've been playing some Kirby and the Forgotten Land with my 7 yr old daughter, and we've been having a blast. We got to the 2nd world last night, so we'll definitely have to play some more today.

I'm also around 20 hours onto Dragon Quest XI. I still like the gameplay, but some of the story arcs have been really bland and cringe (the horse racing in the sand area, as well as the tournament). Still, I knew I wasn't signing up for an epic story with deep characters and plot twists when I decided to try a Dragon Quest game, so I'm trying to keep my expectations in check. It's still enjoyable for the most part though.

Re: Review: Kirby And The Forgotten Land - A Breezy Delight With Mario-Level Invention

GregamanX

I'm going to play this one with my 7yr old daughter. Hopefully itll be our first co-op game beaten together. She absolutely loved the demo, and I love all the kirby games, so it's an obvious day one buy for me. I would much rather play something like this than other big games like Pokemon, Triangle Strategy and Elden Ring. This is gonna be such a chill, fun time. I can't wait.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (March 19th)

GregamanX

I started Dragon Quest XI this week, so I'll be playing it for many weekends to come. Aside from Kirby next week, it'll be my last big release for a very long time, as I'm cleaning out the last of my backlog again. It's a chill and fun time, as well as my first Dragon Quest game that I've played.

Re: Poll: Will You Be Buying The Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - Booster Course Pass DLC?

GregamanX

I think there needs to be an option on the poll to wait until more tracks are released. I almost bought it weeks ago, but when I thought about it, I would be paying nearly $40 Canadian to have a slow, unsatisfying trickle of tracks over the course of 2 whole years. Since I don't avidly play MK8 anyway, I'm going to wait at least a year for half the tracks to release first, or possibly the whole 2 years to get the full effect of being able to play all the tracks at once.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (March 12th)

GregamanX

After beating Slime Rancher: Plortable Edition last week (probably my favourite game that I've played this year), I'm now playing Shift Happens (which I got on sale last year for a couple of dollars). Its not lighting my world on fire like Slime Rancher, but it's got solid puzzles, and it doesnt seem very long, so it's just a little something different for me to play until Kirby and the Forgotten Land releases. I'm also playing a little Metal Slug 4 on the side on my MVSX with my wife. Like always, I have a blast with this series.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (March 5th)

GregamanX

I'm going to be finishing up Wunderling, which is a fantastic little autorunning gem. The level design is meticulously well thought out. I imagine I'll be starting Slime Rancher: Plortable Edition next. I need something happy and chill to relax with, and this looks like it will fit the bill. Also, I played the Kirby and the Forgotten Land demo and it's amazing. It'll definitely be a day 1 buy for me.

Re: Good Smile Releasing New Atelier Ryza 2 Swimsuit Figure, Pre-Orders Now Available

GregamanX

@Tobiaku Nah, I'm pretty sure they designed her with fanservice in mind and were just being humble and innocent during that interview/article. Not that I really care in regards to fanservice. If some people enjoy it, that's fine. I just find it kind of funny thinking about that interview. At the time I eye-rolled, and I'm still eye-rolling now. I always knew of the intent. You don't "accidentally" design a sexy character. 😂

Re: Anniversary: Night In The Woods Is Now Five Years Old

GregamanX

Oh wow, it's been 5 years already? Night in the Woods still sits in my top 5 games of all time, even after all of this time. I was charmed from beginning to end, and there was never a moment where I wanted to leave Possum Springs. More people really need to give this one a shot.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (February 19th)

GregamanX

After beating The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles: Resolve last weekend (a fantastic game that had an epic story connecting most of the cases over 2 whole games), I took the whole workweek off from gaming. I was a bit burnt out after playing such long games this year. So today I'm going to boot up Tony Hawk's Pro Skater or Spyro 1 from the Reignited Trilogy (or possibly both). I want something to take me back to those PS1 days, and they seem like good choices since I already know their quality (as long as the ports of these remakes hold up well).

Re: Toaplan's Coin-Op Classic 'Snow Bros.' Is Coming To Switch Later This Year

GregamanX

I used to rent Snow Bros all the time on the NES as a kid. Around 15 years later, I came across this guy who was just opening up a game store who had it for about $100. It was pricey, but I bought it and owned it for a few years. I sold it back to him when its value went back up and he paid $500 for it. Really easy money for me. I thought I would never see the game again, but now after around 10 years, here it is on the Switch! I'll definitely be grabbing this one.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (February 12th)

GregamanX

I'm on the 4th case of The Great Ace Attorney: Resolve, so I'll mostly be playing that. The murder victim saddens me on this one. I also started some Metal Slug 3 on the MVSX with my wife. I imagine we'll be playing some more of that too.

On another note, I'll be phasing down on getting new games after I beat my last 10 to 15 of them in my backlog. I'm getting more into collecting Jojo's Bizarre Adventure manga instead. I'll still get the new Kirby probably, Klonoa on Switch, maybe MK8 DLC, Windjammers 2 and TMNT Shredder's Revenge this year, but ill really be scaling down on new purchases.
