Re: Review: Sonic Colours (Wii)

Looking back in 2020, wow this is sad. People would take anything at that point. Colors ruined Sonic. Awful writing, almost entirely 2D, one character, pretty bad voice acting. R.I.P. Sonic. 1991-2009. Edit: replayed it. It is fun, but my criticisms stand. Edit again, March 3rd 2022: Yeah this game is pretty good. I was going through my “I hate all post 2009 Sonic games” phase. I don’t even play Sonic that much anymore, but I was 13 back then. Anyway, Colors is a great game. Still don’t like how 2D it is, and the writing is still worse than almost anything pre-2010, but the game itself is a fun time! I like the level design, it has good controls, it’s a great game! Just a little simple. But yeah, if anyone ever reads this, this is kind of an interesting documentation of my life since I wrote this.

@MeowMeowKins @MeowMeowKins The reason I like 06 is because it tried to be something. It’s the antithesis of Forces. Forces is a bad game because it’s literally a empty game. It played it too safe to be fun. Which is sad because the marketing showed all these classic Sonic villains (classic as in iconic, not like Classic Sonic), and never used any of them except Zavok, who’s literally the worst Sonic villain. The game pretended it would be the game to bring back the Dreamcast and dark age stuff people love, but it’s the same play-it-safe philosophy as Colors. Colors used that to its advantage, being a soft reboot basically, to ease in new fans after a slew of “convoluted” games. But after so 7 years of that stuff, Forces was a shining hope (oh. oh no. I accidentally referenced the game.) in many peoples minds, promising to be the game to try new stuff. This was a lie.

Anyway, 06 was going to be a soft reboot, like Colors. The game took risks, adding three major characters: Silver, Elise, and Memphis (Mephiles, if you must). Silver was a hedgehog from a ruined future, who was tricked by Mephiles to think Sonic was the Iblis Trigger. Iblis is the destructive entity of the week, who destroyed the world in Silver’s time. Elise is the actual Iblis trigger. That’s the basic story premise. The gameplay builds off of Adventure 2 and Shadow. It’s good.
But everything in this game is hindered by the rush. This game HAD to be out before two artificial deadlines: Sonic’s 15th anniversary which only Sega cared about, and Christmas. As a result the game is so broken it’s almost unplayable sometimes, not to mention the sometimes minute long loading screens. But the story, gameplay, graphics (besides NPCs) and music are all there. The game was something, which you can’t say about Forces.

@WesEds Oh trust me, NOTHING has changed. Now you can move in more than four directions, and when you fight even Pokémon that weren’t sent out get a little bit of XP, to make grinding less obnoxious. I’d recommend getting SS. There good games, and if you haven’t played since Gen 3 it shouldn’t matter that you can’t bring over some Pokémon.
