As always, with a new Smash Bros. Ultimate fighter comes a new song list - and alongside Steve and co there'll be a total of seven new tracks added to Nintendo's all-star brawler.
Unfortunately, the team wasn't able to include original Minecraft tracks. Here's Sakurai's full explanation:
"we unfortunately weren't able to include music from the original game"
"Of course, since this is such a frenetic game...it would be next to impossible to make the tracks from the original game work in that context...It would make players relax."
"Instead, we've selected several tracks from spin-offs and mini-games that will work in the context of a fighting game..."
The music for the Minecraft DLC is taken from the recently released Minecraft Dungeons and augmented reality mobile game Minecraft Earth. Here's the full list (asterisk = new arrangement):
What do you think of this song list? How do you feel about the original Minecraft tracks not making the cut? Tell us below.

That’s really lame. No Swedish Mafia? Edit: I'm shocked even 2 people liked this comment. This is not a reference to the band the Swedish Mafia, nor the fact the dev's are mainly swedish. This is a bizarre inside joke wish my siblings that I posted here for my own amusement.
Well that’s extremely disappointing. No C418 tunes at all? There’s plenty Pikmin music that’s just as ‘relaxing’.
Yeah that's unfortunate. I wonder if there was some licencing issue with C418
But... Pigstep...
At least we still have Steve.
Wait, Minecraft has music?
His explanation lines up with how bored he sounds.
@SalvorHardin and how unnecessarily complicated, stiff and boring the “character” is.
It's a shame that no original Minecraft music is included. However, I remember enjoying the mini-games on the old versions of Minecraft, so it's cool that their music is being preserved somehow.
Guess makes sense due to the nature of Minecraft's music but that is somewhat disappointing they couldn't make more fast-paced arrangements of the original game's music.
Ok lemme get this straight
You put stuff like ENVIRONMENTAL NOISES FROM PIKMIN IN SMASH
BUT NOT C418'S MUSIC
At least it’s better than Final Fantasy’s two
I'm not too big into Minecraft music but I would've liked to hear a more intense arrangement of the Nether music, that one is pretty nice.
I do like the music they used in the Steve trailer a lot so at least I know I will like one of these tracks which is good because for once the stage actually looks like it'll be a bit more interesting. The DLC characters have not had the best track record with stages in my opinion.
@TheFrenchiestFry I don't think he meant that as is "we didn't add it because it didn't fit". It honestly sounds like they were literally unable to use the original music, and is looking for the bright side of things.
Maybe?
C418 is very capable of putting out some bangers to suite the Sumaburo mood. It's the dull spot on an otherwise very exciting looking DLC.
No Stal? Heck, not even Pigstep? A track doesn’t need to be terribly energetic for it to still work. They don’t have to put every single Minecraft track in it, but the fact not even ONE made it in is shocking.
@fafonio Can you like let go of the fact Steve doesn't have any character
Nintendo literally thrives on those kinds of characters
The person who popped out the egg in your profile picture has no character. He's just a dinosaur who sticks out his tongue whenever Mario punches it in the retina like the sick slave owning ***** he is
Most of the first party reps and characters like Joker, Byleth, Marth and Hero all have either very little character or they're as non-existent as my social skills in public
It's almost as if that's the point because they're meant to be self inserts for the player like a story is told from the player's perspective. I'm pretty sure at this point you just dislike Steve being here because he's not a character YOU grew up with.
Sakurai's wording definitely made it seem like licensing issues. A shame they couldn't get more tracks.
Well, at least C418 isn't as stingy as SE, who only provided 2 FF songs and less than 10 from DQ.
@TheFrenchiestFry It’s just a silly argument when literally Wii Fit Trainer is in the game. Villager too. Villager. (S)he doesn’t even have a name.
More than what Final Fantasy as to offer, I’ll say that at least.
@TheFrenchiestFry if you look at most of his recent comments, he seems rather as$blasted from Steve's inclusion.
Just sit back and enjoy his tears.
TheFrenchiestFry Oh, now you´ve gone and done it! It´s one thing to insult Steve from Minecraft, a lot of people seem to view him as just a meme character anyway, but Yoshi? Come on! Saying Yoshi has no personality... it's blatantly ignoring all the times where he wasn't stuck as Mario´s steed! Yoshi´s Island? Yoshi´s Story? Yoshi´s Woolly World? Do these games mean nothing to you!? Yoshi and his brethren are constantly portrayed as a happy-go-lucky species who prefer a peaceful-solitary lifestyle, but have the courage and determination to put a stop to a looming threat, should the situation call for it. He may not be the most expressive character ever, but he certainly beats out character like Mario and Steve. It makes sense for Steve to seem like he has no personality because he's meant to represent everyone. Like many silent protagonists, he is meant for the Player to fill his role and imagine that they're the ones in this blocky universe. And calling Yoshi's egg a semen egg... it just seems like you got upset at Fafonio and wanted to get back at him by insulting something that he (and I, obviously) apparently likes. Just please, leave Yoshi out of your thirst for vengeance.
@Eel It might be a Cloud situation where they didn't want to pay royalties to C418 the same way they would've had to for Nobuo Uematsu's Final Fantasy VII compositions, which is why Cloud only has two songs that accompany Midgar.
@TheFrenchiestFry wow, so you’re comparing well designed characters to 3 rows of blocks with a face plastered on them with basic stiff movements?
Ok.....
And no. I did like Minecraft in its time. I’m not just a blind fanboy who says that Steve “is well designed”.
Call me a hater... I can call you a fanboy.
I see Steve for what it is... a dull avatar/meme from an iconic and entertaining game.
@qwjdstb I probably should've said little personality. He still doesn't come off as a remotely compelling character
@Arkay don’t worry. I can complain about things I don’t like. The dude is still in the game. Doesn’t mean I have to s**k Minecraft’s ...**** and say it’s “ohhh so well designed”
@fafonio A well designed character doesn't automatically equate to a character with personality.
Case in point like 90% of the JRPG reps in Smash.
Again, you don't come off as a hater. You come off as someone who's legitimately spiteful of people who actually wanted him to repped in Smash in the first place just because you don't like him, or just because there was a character you wanted who isn't in the game yet.
A lot of people are nostalgic or grew up with games like Minecraft, and this character is clearly meant for those kinds of people. What you consider a compelling character won't be everyone's preference, and vice versa. That doesn't mean you have to swarm every comments section related to Steve just to act like a jackass.
@fafonio dude calm down, you're seriously getting this upset over a character?
Go take a walk outside or something.
I disliked having Byleth in the game but I got over it.
@fafonio stop that
@TheFrenchiestFry chill
@TheFrenchiestFry Im not being spiteful of people because I’m not insulting you for liking the character ... unlike what you’re doing.
Steve is a dull “character”, it’s not that hard to admit. Whether you like the game or not.... I don’t care.
Im not saying he doesn’t deserve to be in smash...
His “design” is terrible and something a 5 year old could have come up with... even the Internet had to come up with the name. It’s not that hard to understand what I’m talking about.
And swarm every post? It’s been 2 articles. That I had a lengthy discussion with another person in the reveal doesn’t mean like I’m swarming everything about Steve.
This is a big shame, but at least the quality of the included songs is great, and Gareth Coker music is officially in Smash! (Now for something related to Ori to get in...)
@fafonio His design does suck. That's the point. It's meant to be simplistic just like everything else in the game. Can you like let go of the fact that you so obviously don't like him now and let people enjoy things?
What makes Steve so different from any other self insert character? Why does he constantly get crapped on but every other silent protagonist gets a pass? His design is blocky because they just wanted to make him mimic the way the rest of the world looks. It's not that big of a deal. The best mascots are still the ones 5 year olds can draw anyway.
@fafonio Steve looks like that because THATS THE STYLE OF MINECRAFT
@TheFrenchiestFry Dude, I just stated my opinion about it. You engaged into my opinion. The boards don’t need toxic positivity all the time.
It’s not that I initially replied to a post from you to directly downgrade your enjoyment of it and engage.
I just need time to filter out that HE got in the game. Cool for you guys. My opinion won’t change the fact that he is in. But this is a comment section. If you expect always a positive reaction to things, you live in an imaginary world.
Don’t engage with people if you’re not ready to discuss without insulting or attacking.
However, sorry I you feel as if I’m trying to “campaign” that he gets removed or something. My only point is that I don’t find his design appealing. It’s like an 8bit design done wrong. I’m a designer and animator, so I care for these things.
@crashcontrol I know it’s the style of the game... doesn’t take away that the movements and design are hideous, stiff and out of place (to me)
Everybody... enjoy the character and next time you see a Yoshi go directly to beat you online just for being Steve... it may be me
See you online
This comment section made me wonder where Yoshi’s eggs come from. Do they just edit out the mating scenes in Yoshi’s Island?
@fafonio to be fair his movements supposed to be like that (not trying to argue just pointing it out)
@nessisonett to be fair, infertile eggs are a thing. There's no need for extra steps if they just want to smash them.
This is really sad! I really like the songs from the original...this will be unfortunate but at least the Steve himself has moves that stay faithful to the original!
People have so much hate for a video-game character, it makes me wonder how they behave in the real world!
@TheFrenchiestFry What a garbage post. Hero, Marth and many others have personality and are loved by fans of their franchise.
@Paraka My 4 year old just got into it on the Switch, and all these years I've never played (not my thing) and I was like. This game has music?!
People get so bent out of shape about the inclusion of Smash characters. Unless a game is inherently broken, I don't know why so many people get so damn upset at this stuff. I'm not even a huge Smash fan and I still don't get it. I believe there should be a large voice from a community, but sometimes it's childish and annoying. We never get what we want in games most of the time for various reasons. Licensing issues, some offered money to be included or some didn't charge as much, timing, etc.
I also believe this has to do with a group of people who vehemently hate the game with a passion because it was one of the first "games made popular from streamers" on YouTube way back in the day, and there was a huge trend of anything that's popular with the mainstream or "non-gamers" is trash. Also, some don't deem the series "worthy" of being included because there's TONS of characters people want instead. While I agree this is a weird pick, it's popular. Think of it in a marketing perspective. Kids see Minecraft in Smash they will play it and buy it. Games are a business in the end and it's a smart business move. Minecraft is still wildly popular. My own 4 year old just got into it recently.
@ivory_soul - Played it like... 5 years ago? Maybe 6, but all I can recall was hours of just atmosphere.
Even the English subtitles make it pretty clear that the order of events was:
Impossible to use original tracks ->
Had to use spin-off tracks instead ->
(As an aside) Simply inserting the original tracks as they are would likely cause a disconnect with the frenetic gameplay
That is to say, it’s not the case that they they didn’t use the original tracks because they didn’t think they’d fit. If they were able to, I’m sure they would, and would likely remix the majority of them to give them more pep. This is how they’re got around the problem with similarly chill games like Animal Crossing, Pikmin, and Wii Fit.
As for why they couldn’t use the original music? Well, the only light Sakurai shines on this is that they were unable to include the tracks for “various reasons” (諸事情に使えないことになりました). The “various reasons” bit is omitted in the English subtitles, but it sounds like they tried, and got into messy licensing waters in the process, and settled on the side game music. I’ll admit, the picture of rights and ownership surrounding Minecraft is too complex for me to really hazard an educated guess on who forbade what. But yeah, unfortunately it wasn’t possible.
Those arguing whether it would have been ‘too chill’ are missing the point. Yes, obviously they could have been remixed to fit the Smash vibe, just like every other chill game with chill music, of which there are many. It doesn’t take too much reading of the context to see that this line is just a side remark. “It’s a pity we couldn’t use the main game music. We had to use the spin off music instead. Maybe it’s actually better suited to Smash’s high octane atmosphere than the relaxing original tracks. But like, we literally weren’t able to use the original music anyway so that’s not even really a discussion.”
Bomberman should have come with a song like Sans and Cuphead. And my vote would handedly go to the track Redial from Bomberman Hero.
@Paraka "Wait, Minecraft has music?"
Literally my exact thoughts.
If they used Ai no Uta and Electroplankton themes in Smash, why not at least one relaxing song from the main game?
No Eye of the Spider? Outrageous.
@JMR_Alden Ai no uta (and Tane no uta) are not in Smash anymore, sadly.
@Krisi Yeah I know but songs like that gave Brawl a kind of feeling like anything could make it in. Whereas now they are trying to focus on giving it the 'fighting game' feel.
To me it's a shame because it feels less like a celebration of all the kinds of music each series can have
The original C418 tracks could easily be remixed to fit in with a fighting game. As previous posters have pointed out, it's more likely a rights issue than anything else.
I really don't buy this explanation. The original version of Halland, which was remixed in Steve's reveal trailer, was plenty calm in its own right. If they were able to make that sound good in Smash, they definitely could've with songs like Sweden or Minecraft (there are fan remixes on Youtube that attest to this). Not to mention, we literally have a song called "environmental noises" on Distant Planet. My personal theory is that they either couldn't get the rights to use C418's music, or they just didn't ask. If I remember right, C418 is a freelance artist, so he owns the rights to all music he composed for Minecraft. He did not, however, compose for any of Minecraft's spinoffs. That being the case, it stands to reason that he either didn't want his music in Minecraft, or that the devs never approached him on account of trying to keep Steve's inclusion as private as possible. The Smash devs have been really good about keeping the newcomers from getting leaked (barring the Belmont incident).
Ah well, ultimately it doesn't matter too much. I'm just glad Steve's in the game, though it'll feel really weird playing on a Minecraft stage and never hearing Sweden.
Edit: I'm not sure if this accounts for Pigstep though, really unsure if that song's composer was a freelance artist like C418 or not
But P-I-K-M-I-M tho );
@fafonio chill and @TheFrenchiestFry chill
@RPGamer why are you like you? you are wrong, the nether
@Goat_FromBOTW you r right
@RPGamer They could have included nether music.
It's pretty disappointing, since C418's music is very nostalgic to me, at least they made 4 of the tracks from console minecraft, a very nostalgic edition of minecraft for me. But still, thank you Sakurai for making dreams come true.
@Nemesis666 Hero and Marth have almost NO personality whatsoever.
