Looking ahead at Nintendo's future release schedule, there are only so many games to anticipate, and right now we know very little about each one. The major Switch exclusives in development at the moment include Bayonetta 3, Metroid Prime 4, and of course, a sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Apart from this, there are rumours the company will remaster "most of Super Mario's 35-year back catalogue" on the Switch, more rumours about it re-releasing the Metroid Prime Trilogy, and this week the company confirmed Pikmin 3 Deluxe was en route to Switch. Still not enough? Well, how about some new 2D action games?
The tweet above reveals Nintendo is currently seeking level designers to develop new 2D action games. As noted, applicants need to be able to create “specifications for objects placed in game courses" at Nintendo's Tokyo office - there's also mention of the Kyoto office. As can be seen, the tweet features screens from Yoshi's Crafted World, NSMB. U Deluxe and Super Mario Maker 2. On the same Nintendo webpage, there's an application looking for level designers to work on new 3D action games.
While any new 2D action game could be based on completely new IP, this job post has already got many Nintendo fans on social media hoping for a side-scrolling Metroid game. At the start of this year, alongside the Paper Mario Switch rumours, there was mention of a classic Game Boy Advance Metroid title potentially returning.

It should be noted that Nintendo EPD Tokyo is the team that works on the 3D Mario games (from 64 up to Odyssey), not the 2D ones.

I don't think it wise to perpetuate the Mario Remasters when the evidence is negligible at best, and the evidence against is is overwhelming.

Mario seems logical. I imagine they’d release some kind of 2D Mario on Switch at some point. Those games basically print money & I can’t think of a console since N64 without one.
There’s been a strange lack of actual Mario on the Switch. Odyssey is the only new platformer so far, I would have thought they’d have made a new NSMB game, they print money.

Oh god, I would die for a new 2D Metroid with pixel art! I was seriously heartbroken Metroid Dread never became a reality. You know, I was actually a huge Metroid fan back in the day. Every single GBA game, Metroid 2 on Game Boy, all three Metroid Primes, and I was obsessed with Prime Hunters online multiplayer (joined dedicated forums and everything). Prime Hunters even had built-in voice chat! Oh the irony, a DS game having built-in voice chat when Switch games don't.

The Switch (more specifically, me) desperately needs more original first-party sidescrolling games. We got Kirby and yoshi that were not as great as last-gen Kirby and Yoshi. Time to get back to roots, Nintendo!
They also sell equally or more than 3D games and are cheaper to make! So what’s the holdup?

Well if its a new 2d side scrolling mario bros game lets hope they revamp the engine from the boring, generic "new" series. That style is staler than 2 year old bread.

They could just browse Mario Maker 2 and recruit a few of the best creators there. I’m guessing they’re looking for LEVEL designers since they use that term. Regardless of whether the goal is new game in a franchise or new IP, you would think they have that part covered and want some new blood setting up nuts and bolts level ideas. Plenty of talent giving them a run for their money there, they just have to wade through a lot of sloppy slap togethers to find them.
What they’re actually looking to do is something to ponder, though. If you look at what the Switch already has:
Mario: Between NSMBUD and SMM2, and all the 8 and 16 bit games in the online, they kind of dilute the specialness of putting out a new 2D Mario (unless they go for a whole new style, I’d like a Cuphead approach but I don’t see them imitating an indie game with their star character)
Donkey Kong: The odds of this are better, but with Tropical Freeze selling even less on Switch than on Wii U, they may be nervous to put money into a follow up.
Yoshi: So far, no system has gotten more than one of these, and Switch already has Crafted World (and the original with the online).
Kirby: Well, Kirby games never seem to rate in the same space as the above franchises. They seem to be their own thing, almost like the Sesame Street of platformers.
Something NEW: So, when’s the last time NIntendo rolled out a new 2D IP? I’d like to see what they’d do, though. They’ve milked the ones they’re known for for so long, it’s hard to picture what they’d do as a fresh concept.
Whatever their plan is, it’s good to see the intention to create new 2D games. 24 years since Mario 64, and it’s still pretty clear that 3D can’t completely replace 2D game design.

Releasing 3 or more highly popular games on the same cartridge, or just all within a short period of each other would result in much lower sales than if they did the same thing over the course of several years.
Plus the anniversary is in about a month, there isn’t enough time to do any sort of ad campaign that can generate the hype such a release would warrant.

Sure, but the 2D levels only occupy a small portion of the 3D Mario games. All of the kingdoms in Odyssey are 3D levels, as are the the worlds in 3D World/3D Land and the galaxies in Galaxy/Galaxy 2 - the 2D portions only account for tiny parts of the games.
If its a 2D action game why is Mario on the cover, it is a platformer not an action game. :/

The thing is nintendo always uses weird terminology and "2D action game" could mean anything. It could mean platformer, or shooter. Who knows!
