Looking ahead at Nintendo's future release schedule, there are only so many games to anticipate, and right now we know very little about each one. The major Switch exclusives in development at the moment include Bayonetta 3, Metroid Prime 4, and of course, a sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Apart from this, there are rumours the company will remaster "most of Super Mario's 35-year back catalogue" on the Switch, more rumours about it re-releasing the Metroid Prime Trilogy, and this week the company confirmed Pikmin 3 Deluxe was en route to Switch. Still not enough? Well, how about some new 2D action games?
The tweet above reveals Nintendo is currently seeking level designers to develop new 2D action games. As noted, applicants need to be able to create “specifications for objects placed in game courses" at Nintendo's Tokyo office - there's also mention of the Kyoto office. As can be seen, the tweet features screens from Yoshi's Crafted World, NSMB. U Deluxe and Super Mario Maker 2. On the same Nintendo webpage, there's an application looking for level designers to work on new 3D action games.
While any new 2D action game could be based on completely new IP, this job post has already got many Nintendo fans on social media hoping for a side-scrolling Metroid game. At the start of this year, alongside the Paper Mario Switch rumours, there was mention of a classic Game Boy Advance Metroid title potentially returning.

Super Princess Peach 2 😁
Tencent Allstars DX Jump Challenge
It should be noted that Nintendo EPD Tokyo is the team that works on the 3D Mario games (from 64 up to Odyssey), not the 2D ones.
Hoping for a new donkey kong game
I don't think it wise to perpetuate the Mario Remasters when the evidence is negligible at best, and the evidence against is is overwhelming.
@Anti-Matter I'd be up for that. The original was a good game that was forgotten by Nintendo...
@Yanina With optional but not really season pass.
Zelda 2 sequel
Nsmb 1000% definitely
Mario seems logical. I imagine they’d release some kind of 2D Mario on Switch at some point. Those games basically print money & I can’t think of a console since N64 without one.
There’s been a strange lack of actual Mario on the Switch. Odyssey is the only new platformer so far, I would have thought they’d have made a new NSMB game, they print money.
@Anti-Matter don't play with my heart!!!
Who owns the rights to Mischief Makers?
“ more rumours about it re-releasing the Metroid Prime Trilogy” -> article from January 2019 about how it’s almost done.
Available for your home in 2025...
Chibi Robo Zip-Lash HD? PLEASE Chibi Robo Zip-Lash HD.
New 2D platformer, eh? Noice.
(And by "new", I don't mean New Super Mario Bros.)
@Anti-Matter Here’s hoping. Or a new Yoshi game. I’d also enjoy new Mario + Luigi games, Super Mario Maker 3, etc.
Lol: Even more ports.
DKC with K. Rool!! Let's FUNKY'ING gooooooo!!!
Oh god, I would die for a new 2D Metroid with pixel art! I was seriously heartbroken Metroid Dread never became a reality. You know, I was actually a huge Metroid fan back in the day. Every single GBA game, Metroid 2 on Game Boy, all three Metroid Primes, and I was obsessed with Prime Hunters online multiplayer (joined dedicated forums and everything). Prime Hunters even had built-in voice chat! Oh the irony, a DS game having built-in voice chat when Switch games don't.
Wow that turned into quite the rant. Didn't know I needed to get Metroid off my chest
I wish it was true, does that count for anything?
@Incoherent1 GameCube. Bam.
@Chlocean as a big Gex fan: no.
New Super Mario Bros 3 babyeeeeee
Super Mario Smashing Fighters 64 for Nintendo Switch!
Hoping for a new Donkey Kong Country, or an updated Wario Land.
Wario Land and a full complete remake of Yoshi’s Island with an all new CRAFT-LESS design. I can only hope...
@Screen I hope the Mario remasters are Fake News and I agree there’s no real evidence for them, but what’s the evidence against?
Hopefully...er, a good Yoshi game this time?
Then again, I personally wouldn't mind another New Super Mario Bros, even though Super Mario Maker 2 kind of makes that unlikely...
@Anti-Matter I begged for that game to happen since 2006...
a new Donkey Kong country or a new 2D Mario games that is not a port -_-
I would have thought that they would already have expert 2d designers in house! Xxx
The Switch (more specifically, me) desperately needs more original first-party sidescrolling games. We got Kirby and yoshi that were not as great as last-gen Kirby and Yoshi. Time to get back to roots, Nintendo!
They also sell equally or more than 3D games and are cheaper to make! So what’s the holdup?
Donkey Kong please 🙏
A Kirby game for sure
@Anti-Matter they should bring super princess peach to switch first then follow up with a sequal
New New Super Mario Bros
Funky Kong Country
Falcon & Fox's Fantastic Adventures - Hey You, Get Off McCloud
New Donkey Kong Country game should have been ready by now, if not they need to get to work
Tencent Allstars DX Jump Challenge
@Yanina Dear Lord, why must she foul our comment section with such vileness?
This can only be good. Id like to see a new Jelly boy or Alfred Chicken or Flink but these things wont happen.
A new Chibi Robo might though.
Funky Kong Country
@OorWullie Whereas you, on the other hand, may have saved this entire site.
Imagine: DONK SOULS. An entire game melding Funky Mode with élite 2D platforming and the disturbing lore of DK Island. (Who built those ruins, eh? Eh?)
Excel deluxe definitive edition HD
Possibly a Zelda II remaster or a new DKC game to round off the series as a trilogy?
Well if its a new 2d side scrolling mario bros game lets hope they revamp the engine from the boring, generic "new" series. That style is staler than 2 year old bread.
@westman98 Mario Odyssey did include 2d levels, though. Maybe for the sequel they’ll take that aspect a bit further.
@DrDaisy since enix got bought by square ... my guess is square
Hope all that talent isn’t being used to develop another dumb mobile phone game.
Those endless runners and such are a load of junk and a waste of resources, time and talent...
@Anti-Matter for once- I agree with you. Super Princess Peach 2 would be a welcome and happy delight. Loved the first one to bits and bobs.
@RPGamer great elder god Azathoth- YES! YES! YES!
A new Kirby is in development I remembee hearing ftom HAL.
Maybe it'll be Mario vs DK or Pikmin.
Something great I hope, whats happened to this Metroid game that's been rumoured.
SNES Remix, Metroid 5, Kid Icarus, Ice Climbers infinite climb, Boswer's lost koopalings, Wario's World War, ChibI Robo unplugged, Punch Out contender edition, Devils world deluxe, Takamura' ninja castle adventure, Bayonetta 3: demastered.
@COVIDberry Donk Souls would be a day one. The game I never knew I wanted.
Not convinced my Mario Maker skills would be enough on my CV
I'm expecting a Hey! Metroid announcement soon...
Super WaLuigi brothers? (Wario/Waluigi) 2D action game. Lol i would so buy that game.
Can be anything, really. Which franchise from Nintendo doesn’t have 2D platforming? A lot of m do:
Even Some Smash have 2D platforming
Metroid 2D, Metroid 2D, Metroid 2D, Metroid 2D, Metroid 2D, Metroid 2D...
Ice Climbers HD
This is strange? Why do you need level designers if you only port old games?!?
They could just browse Mario Maker 2 and recruit a few of the best creators there. I’m guessing they’re looking for LEVEL designers since they use that term. Regardless of whether the goal is new game in a franchise or new IP, you would think they have that part covered and want some new blood setting up nuts and bolts level ideas. Plenty of talent giving them a run for their money there, they just have to wade through a lot of sloppy slap togethers to find them.
What they’re actually looking to do is something to ponder, though. If you look at what the Switch already has:
Mario: Between NSMBUD and SMM2, and all the 8 and 16 bit games in the online, they kind of dilute the specialness of putting out a new 2D Mario (unless they go for a whole new style, I’d like a Cuphead approach but I don’t see them imitating an indie game with their star character)
Donkey Kong: The odds of this are better, but with Tropical Freeze selling even less on Switch than on Wii U, they may be nervous to put money into a follow up.
Yoshi: So far, no system has gotten more than one of these, and Switch already has Crafted World (and the original with the online).
Kirby: Well, Kirby games never seem to rate in the same space as the above franchises. They seem to be their own thing, almost like the Sesame Street of platformers.
Something NEW: So, when’s the last time NIntendo rolled out a new 2D IP? I’d like to see what they’d do, though. They’ve milked the ones they’re known for for so long, it’s hard to picture what they’d do as a fresh concept.
Whatever their plan is, it’s good to see the intention to create new 2D games. 24 years since Mario 64, and it’s still pretty clear that 3D can’t completely replace 2D game design.
@Goat_FromBOTW Did I say Chibi Robo? I meant Gex Zip-Lash HD.
Releasing 3 or more highly popular games on the same cartridge, or just all within a short period of each other would result in much lower sales than if they did the same thing over the course of several years.
Plus the anniversary is in about a month, there isn’t enough time to do any sort of ad campaign that can generate the hype such a release would warrant.
Video Armageddon announcer: “So, I give you... Super Merio Brothers... 4!!!” 😜 (Or 5, if you’re in Japan)
@RPGamer Hehehe. 🐙
Ice climbers reboot
@Screen True. Though they could announce the game(s) on the anniversary and not launch them until November or December.
Sure, but the 2D levels only occupy a small portion of the 3D Mario games. All of the kingdoms in Odyssey are 3D levels, as are the the worlds in 3D World/3D Land and the galaxies in Galaxy/Galaxy 2 - the 2D portions only account for tiny parts of the games.
If its a 2D action game why is Mario on the cover, it is a platformer not an action game. :/
@Chlocean I don’t know man.... The 3ds versions turned into a mutant sewer creature and attacked 4 men! And one was a Fling Smash owner! We don’t need that happening again
@BirdBoy16 It'll be a BOON for the therapy industry.
I hope it's a new Wario Land
Clearly a Zelda 2 sequel, finally.
there is a very low chance of a new DKC!
The thing is nintendo always uses weird terminology and "2D action game" could mean anything. It could mean platformer, or shooter. Who knows!
It should be a new 2D kid icarus
Ultimate "Ultimate NES Remix"
A New Super Mario Bros game is always welcome, as well as a Donkey Kong Country game.
I want a new super Mario 2d just not a “New” if you catch my gist.
