Lego launched its Super Mario range last weekend, with a wide selection of kits and packs based on Nintendo's most famous characters – and the world he inhabits.
The course-building focus on the range is sure to generate interest amongst younger players, and the companion app – which also contains the building instructions – reinforces this aspect by allowing you to upload photos of the courses you've created. It's all good fun, and we've had a ball putting together our world 'Super Mario Worlds' over the weekend.
But what about you? What are your impressions of the kits so far? What do you think works, and what could perhaps be done better? How do you see Nintendo expanding and evolving this range over time, and do you think we'll see Zelda, Metroid or Pokémon equivalents?
As ever, we want to know your thoughts, so be sure to share them below. Oh, and be sure to also check out our exclusive interview with Jonathan Bennink, the lead designer of the range.

They're fugly, if you ask me.
Ugly as hell, but hope they sell out fast so I can sell my preorder for a decent profit.
I have no interest in supporting this line.
I’ll pay good money for decent sets (the friends TV set and Christmas gingerbread home, and iron man hulk buster most recently), but this one is just YUCK.
I really think the designs are just so ugly. Aside from that, it's really cool! I appreciate that they didn't want to just do straight up regular ol Legos. Thats what the nes set is for
I personally like them, and people forget Legos are mostly for kids. Yes adults can get some enjoyment out of Legos as well, but this is obviously a series of sets aimed for kids.
I don't think I'm the target audience....but I'm also not sure who that audience is?
They look like Duplo, not normal Lego. Even as a kid I wouldn't want these silly looking things, I'd want proper Mario mini-figures.
They're cool, very clever, really fun and I think it's great but not for me. It's for kids. Though the LEGO NES is very much for me, so I'm not complaining!
Would love to see Lego Zelda and Metroid as regular/collectors sets though.
Lego Pokemon could be interesting if it had special pieces with similar tech to allow for battles! I'd go for that!
It looks awful to me, why they did not go down the more traditional mini figure route is beyond me, this looks more like Lego Duplo than anything else.
Then they go more traditional with the NES set.. crazy if you ask me.
It seems pretty dumb in my opinion. I don't really get the "game" aspect of it. As a kid, I would have much preferred actual sets with actual mini figures so that I could make up the "game" myself. I used to actually buy Mario toys as a kid and make my own game out of them. If I bought this growing up, I would have played with it for a few hours and I would have been done.
I like them but I’m keen to see people take the figures and build much larger worlds out of it. A replica of world 1 or 2 of Mario 64 for example would be amazing.
Like I shared on the other post I got it this weekend and had a blast playing it with my four year old, heck, my twelve year old plays it with her too. Building different levels, bopping things, it’s very Nintendo. Everyone’s complaining, and I get it, I’d love to have little Mario collectibles gathering dust next to my Lego Voltron. But it seems I wasn’t the targeted demographic. Children are the demo, and I’m glad it’s a pretty imaginative experience for them.
Inner child likes the interactivity but also thinks the designs are strange, and both child (after the N64 when I started buying my own stuff) and adult self are disgusted by the price. Tone deaf in a time where people are struggling to make ends meet, really.
@TimboSlice Wait. So you don't want to ''support'' this, but you have it pre-ordered anyway. Logic.
i have to say i think people just like to complain. they complain about the price when almost everything is pretty expensive now a days, and most sets come to about 10 cents a piece ( sounds fair to me ).plus the building takes time to and a lot of creativity to come up with. they complain oh they look terrible but honestly 100% better than the knex versions which are kinda close to what i read people saying they would have wanted. but yet those didn’t fly off the shelves. i’m sorry but way to many negative comments. lego is about creativity and like nintendo trying new things
I think that way too many people forget that video games and toys are meant for children. Try not to be so cynical when you’re looking at something that’s meant to provide entertainment for people ages 6 and up.
Cool for children!
Not for me , I like Star Wars Lego usually the big ships xx
Interesting in concept, awkward in execution.
If Nintendo can get back to making games, that would be good.
@MitchK in regards to Video Games being for kids, is that not an old mentality?
I mean Video Games have really become a viable mature form of Entertainment, especially post 2000.
I understand your sentiment in saying that though.
@MitchK : if you ask me, the market for this is 30+ bearded guys for their desks at work
As a pretty big Lego fan, nah. One thing I love about minifigures is that they all have this kind of congruent design. You can put Bart Simpson next to Princess Bubblegum and Spiderman, and they all look great together. Emmet, Starlord and Owen Grady can get coffee, or Star Wars characters can hang out with the Pirates of the Carribbean as they all help Steve mine for diamonds. This is just too much of a departure from that for me.
If we get Zelda Lego though, with proper minifigures... I used to chop up, sand and paint Lego parts just to make Nintendo characters, Zelda ones especially. S'not looking so impossible now 😁
It a weird design aestheic at first, but has grown a little on me. I quite like the enemy mini figures you can get on the Ninty Store:
ttps://store.nintendo.co.uk/nintendo-merch-accessories/lego-super-mario-character-packs-71361/12644096.html
(out of stock at the mo)
I am looking at buying a set or two for - ahem - the children. And no one is going to stop me, I mean the kids of course, from having a great time!!
I'm not really into Nintendo's non-gaming ventures, so I don't really care personally. Those prices are outrageous.
I think most people reading this website are simply not the target audience Nintendo are interested in.
They need to ensure the very youngest generation are brought up familiar with Nintendo as a brand.
If you think this is a bad product then you're just not really seeing the decades long marketing campaign that Nintendo is 'building' with this product. They do have a plan here - and for toddlers I guarantee these toys are not 'fugly'
Older generations just want traditional lego as iconic shelf 'trophies' but Nintendo is creating a product for young kids to actually engage with and play with.
Folks, it was never meant for you - Nintendo already reached your generation, and is looking way ahead.
I picked up half of the sets over the past week and then finally was able to get the Starter Course on Friday. I really like it. The sets are fun to build and LEGO Mario is adorable wnen you use him. I just need more room to make bigger levels. The Monty Mole playset is my favorite (and it was free!). It became more enjoyable once I separated the unique constructs of each play set and started putting them whereever I see fit.
I still need to get’s Bowser’s Castle, Toad’s Treasure Hunt, King Boo’s Haunted Yard, Boomer Bill Barage, and Thwomp Drop. I’ll definitely have all of it bought by the end of the month. And I can’t wait for the second wave. Hopefully we get Luigi, an underground play set, and Peach’s Castle.
It’s all very clever and well-done (As expected from Nintendo and Lego), but i wonder where the long-term entertainment value in it is, especially given the quite steep price...
@Octane Might as well make profit on it. That’s my logic. Thinking if I don’t give LEGO my $70 that its going to make any difference, that’s ludicrous.
@brunojenso seems to be the only one getting it! We picked up the starter set, my 4 & 2 years olds have loved it and they're making positive relationship with Mario. When it comes time to get their own consoles thinking of Mario as something they've always loved will steer them towards whatever future console Nintendo is selling. It's a far more canny product than most are giving it credit for
I think the novelty will wear off super quick. Should have gone with tradition Lego sets
I'm 38 and I had absolutely no issue buying 2 sets, the starter course and Bowser's Castle. My daughter is 11 and we had an absolute blast putting the first set together. I never thought that i would get to even see a Super Mario Lego set in my lifetime. They're both going to look great in my gameroom. The only complaint I have is the sound...your house needs to be dead quiet in order to hear the effects. Everyone has an opinion...I think they're rad!!
As most people said, proper sets would be awesome! While I though this one was ugly, it have grown on me... I can see me buying it, if not for my daughter.
I actually like these. They are not that ugly.. it's Lego people. LMAO
Genuinely don't care. I wish there were a poll, so viewers could easily express themselves without having to write a long comment. OR if NL would let us leave 3 word comments without asking if "that's really all we have to say."
So it seems here that the people who've actually got it have enjoyed it, particularly with their kids, and many of the people who are complaining about it haven't got their hands on it. I'd like to hear from someone who actually has this and has spent time with it and doesn't like it.
Me? I have it, I think it's quite pricey - but then so is everything really - and fun - I was definitely a skeptic, even after I'd finished building it, but then I played with the functionality and totally get it, and my kids enjoyed it more than I did.
I have always been a fan of both LEGO and SUPER MARIO since childhood (now, 41 with a 5 year old son very into LEGO). If Mario had a built in camera they would have nailed mi trifecta of hobbies right there. Now that i actually own the some sets I can say that the course building aspect is best fun for kids.
The models are actually pretty nice considering you are limited to the lego elements. Pirhana plants are pretty neat.
As far as mario, you need to get used to his look. From playing with him I see there is quite a bit of tech in him, the optical sensor and apparently accelerometers as well (he seems to detect impacts as well as speed).
Price: Licensed LEGO is never cheap.
Playability: so far seems a bit limited but maybe we will get the hang of it later.
Overall: I would give it a 7 out of 10.
I'll say it again if you're really going to make an article like this with no poll: I would have bought a classic style Lego series featuring Mario and co. Day 1. But this... I've seen multiple people playing this as they were meant to, and the sets just get literally destroyed while you play whether you're trying to play seriously or not. I can't see these keeping many kids' attention too long, either. :/
Never been a fan of Lego (except for the games), but they look cute
i'm not liking these departures from games in general, win a drawing and you get a t-shirt, ah yes that will be handy for the hobby not a controller or anything. i think a few of these gaming mascots are just becoming whatever hello kitty is, not a fan of starfox but feels like it's close. they're gonna feel like licensed games despite where they got their start.
I can't see that the age of the child that these toys are aimed at, are Mario gamers.
Mario is not Mickey Mouse.
If I was 10 I'd probably be ecstatic but as an adult I'm not interested.
@Thegreatcraig Your experience with your kids is precisely what Nintendo wanted. If they don't do these kind of products Mario will mean nothing going forward.
The biggest flaw is that all of the sets require mario, but only 1 includes him.
There should be a standalone set that just has mario for around $15.
Much like you can't sell a switch game if no one can buy a switch.
I find it interesting that people think this is ugly but would think a traditional mini-figure would look fine.
It’s also interesting to see some people claim this is only for kids or only for adults when other comments state that an adult had fun with their kid playing with this.
I really like all the other characters, the proportions and blockiness reminds me of Mario 64. But Mario’s lame.
@mr_benn I agree with every word of yours. Same here, bought and played with my daughter and we both had fun.
Think I would have just preferred if they made peaches castle and bowsers castle sets
Bought the starter set and the King Boo expansion kit this weekend for my daughter (but also for me). It’s fun putting the pieces together and planning out a course. The companion app has a lot of potential
Actually doing a course run is pretty awkward. I would say that it’s interesting collaboration between LEGO and Nintendo, but I can’t see spending anymore money on kits or parts. $10 for a power-up suit is ridiculous. It’s just a hat and overalls, you’re not even making anything 🤣
@YoshiTails - there is a Bowser's Castle set... https://www.lego.com/en-gb/product/bowser-s-castle-boss-battle-expansion-set-71369
Eh. It’s kind of lame that they didn’t make ‘regular’ sets from the theme instead.
Not the target audience but I might pick up a couple of the character packs (only $5 each). The style has grown on me quite a bit but I'm worried how many parents will purchase these given the distaste I've seen, the price, and of course the added financial stress from Covid.
To be frank, they look crap.
@mr_benn I don't really like the sparseness of that set though.. Like a proper build with better design and a 1-2-1 recreation of peaches castle from Mario 64
Here in denmark they had a 35% discount on all Lego sets in a specific store. My inner child was screaming at me to buy a few sets... So I did walk out of there with 3 sets. The double dose of nostalgia of Mario and Lego makes it a fun decoration in my living room.
@RhiannonRune you make a comparison that doesn't make much sense...
Switch games require the console to play. Of course you need to buy the base product before you can buy anything that works with it. You can buy a switch just like you can buy the starter set, that comes with all the base pieces required to play.
If you just want it cheaper, maybe wait a bit for a sale?
I kinda like it but it's too expensive and this seems more aimed at kids, so, I'm not really the target demographic. But, I'll bet a lot of kids would have a lot of fun with them.
@Sirtau no what i'm saying is the starter set has been sold out in every physical store ive been too, while there are plenty of the expansion packs.
@RhiannonRune ah! Yes. Funny thing is, I took the plunge and ordered a couple sets online to check it out. Starter set was being shipped separately, probably cos of stock, and is now delayed til some time next week. Guess I'll just pretend I have mario as I run around boo's little area haha.
I love it! Super Interactive and works with the NES! Niiiiiice
