How many Switches are there in the UK now? For Mario Kart to be the top mainstay (as in game not released in the past year) in the charts speaks volumes about the user base.

@Krull It's partly because most shops like Currys and GAME bundle Mario Kart with new Switch consoles.

Off topic but I got a sneaky feeling we will get a Direct of some type this week, here's hoping.

With ACNH doing so well, I see continued dev support for that game. And, it is already built in with monthly and seasonal updates. So, I think we will have some cool updates for the game over the year.

On the other hand, why make MK9 when MK8 continues to sell?

Animal crossing will overtake (no pun intended) Mario kart 8, as the Switch's top selling game, and it's only been out since March 2020.

@Zuljaras Cyberpunk might not be eligible this year. Last year the cutoff was November 15, and cyberpunk comes out the 19, so we’ll see it that date changes and it makes it. Because if not, Animal Crossing might just actually win, which seems crazy to me, as we’ve never really had anything that’s not some sort of action adventure if I’m remembering correctly.

Microsoft Flight Simulator is getting some stellar reviews today so it will be a real contender for Game of the Year.

Personally I can't see past Last of Us 2 which gets my vote for best game of the year, so far anyway.

People are allowed to like and buy games that you don't like. I wouldn't waste a second of my time playing Animal Crossing but I got no problem with the many millions of people who decided to buy it and enjoy it.

@Zuljaras Have you played Ghost of Tsushima yet? It's a master class in gaming. We're hyping up a game that's not even out yet. Sure CD project Red is a great studio but just because they're making a game doesn't invalidate the great games that are already out.

Keep your expectations in check.

I think just for the sheer scale of the game Flight Simulator will be in the mix but yeah probably will not win it.

@Chunkboi79 Maybe MK8 sales will slow down, but it has been sold full price for 3 years on switch and it's a port from Wiiu. If it is selling so well, why split those sales with a new game. I am not complaining, i have over 100 hours on it. I am just amazed.

@dugan Well the install base was miniscule on the wii u and mario kart, mario party, Mario, Zelda, and smash bros are generally the system sellers for Nintendo. Mario Kart's attach rate is ridiculous for any system nintendo sells.

I don't even know if that matters. While I'm sure that there's a few that applies to.kids have been all over that game forever lol. Which is why I used to always get such a kick out of the "mature" and "kiddy" game people that used to always fight over the rating on a box. As they were obsessed with games that tons of kids were as well.

I definitely have to disagree with you there. It's a solid game, but no master class at all. If the Cyberpunk devs deliver on what they've been showing, it will probably be the odds-on favorite for sure.

@gameboy1975 def master class. The only other game that could even go toe to toe with it is doom eternal. Don't know what your definition of master class is but ghost is probably the best game to come out in over a year

Yeah, I'm not going to play that game as I've seen this movie before. Seeing how clearly uber infatuated. you are with the game, I got a feeling that no matter what examples I gave you you'd most likely find a reason to discredit, nitpick or contrarily say that it isn't as good as ghosts. And at that point it just seems to come down to someone trying to tell you why their opinion is better than yours. Nah,no thanks.

So hey man, you feel that it's a master class in gaming, cool. It's good that you liked it. However, I feel like it's a pretty good, but certainly not great game that isn't even in a "masterclass" in a lot of what it's trying to do. It's all good though as thank God for options.

@gameboy1975 way to skirt out of the conversation. Since you obviously cant give any examples on games that are on the same level only proves that the game is on the higher tier of quality games. You may not agree but there are very little games that match it's quality.

The art direction, gameplay, and execution is masterclass. I'm just not some Uber priss with my games to realize an amazing game when we have one. I've seen this movie before when we have some elitist gamer that thinks that unless the game is some blockbuster level story and with an immersive/new industry standard gameplay it can't be master class.

Considering the only single player games that hold a candle to it on the switch is BOTW and Odessey I'd say that's master class

Last of Us 2 is easily game of the year in my opinion.

The fact you even mention Doom Eternal which is the biggest disappointmemt of the generation for me suggests that obviously what you consider a great game differs wildly with my own views and others.

But sure if Ghosts wins you can come back here and gloat.

It basically took everything good about Doom 2016 and made it worse.

If anything it forced you to used different weapons, it was much faster, the environments were much more varied, and the moment to moment gameplay was much more engaging with the addition of platforming and light puzzles. I'd argue doom 2016 was braindead compared to eternal. Which in some interviews with Hugo Martin the plan was to force you to use the whole arsenal and not just one weapon.

It's cool if you personally don't like it as it is different, but it's hardly worse from an objective point of view.

The art style was worse, the world buidling was worse, the jumping and wall climbing was clunky, the soundtrack was worse, the story was gibberish, the Doom spaceship was rubbish filler, the constant farming of ammo from enemies was extremely tiresome and ruined all the boss fights, the ending was rubbish, having to kill enemies in specific ways was annoying.

And yes the Marauder and Archvile were annoying as ****.

I used the whole arsenal in Doom 2106 because it was fun to use, and I didn't have to use the chainsaw every 5 seconds.

Out of curiousity did you actually play Last of Us 2?

@TheFullAndy Yes I 100% couldn't get behind Abby. I loathed every second I played as her, from the rat king to lev. Hated everything that wasn't Ellie, and wasn't a fan of the ending as they should have gave us a choice to kill her or not.

Honestly, the Marauder did slow things to a halt but he was far from game breaking. But shoot the archvile went down in one crucible charge. Shoot most of the stuff you're mentioning kinda comes down to adapting and overcoming which was the goal from the developers. I mean its kinda like complaining about sekiro because of the difficulty which can be negated slightly when using specific tools. It's different but not objectively bad. Again the spaceship was for the most part optional, but shoot playing doom 1 and 2 as unlockables was hot for that game.

Last of us 2 was an amazing game, but I hated it personally. Games can objectively be good or bad, they can also be rated subjectively.

Cool, I have no problem with people not liking Last of Us 2 if they actually played the game. It is the people who deride it without even playing the game that I take issue with.

Back to Doom Eternal, it just wasn't fun for me. Doom 2016 was the biggest surprise of the generation for me I just had a blast with the game and when I beat it I played through it another two or three times.

Doom Eternal was a complete slog and by the end I just willed it to be over and then uninstalled it off my PS4 with zero desire to play it again. Instead I played through Doom 2016 again and the only thing I missed for a bit was the dash move but I got over it.

I will give the DLC a go though but will wait for the PS5 upgrade for the game.

@TheFullAndy Yeah I get what you're saying, Doom Eternal is much different than 2016. People that prefer more of a focused shooter 2016 is def more attractive. For such an extensive change it makes sense if you prefer the other one. The new one def makes you use the whole arsenal and every nook and cranny.

I prefer faster games anyway, so Doom Eternal was a breath of fresh air for me. I personally don't think either or is objectively worse, just preference plays a huge piece in that one.

I hate many games but can acknowledge the quality. Octopath, Captain Toad, Tales of Vesperia, and Last of Us part 2 are all great examples of games that I loath but know they are built with plenty of quality.
