Update (Mon 24th Aug, 2020 11:00 BST): As a quick reminder, the Sega sale currently taking place on the Nintendo Switch eShop in Europe is about to come to an end. You have until the end of today, 24th August, to grab any of the deals listed below.
Original Article (Mon 10th Aug, 2020 16:45 BST): Fans of fast blue hedgehogs and retro classics rejoice, for Sega has kickstarted a major new sale on the Nintendo Switch eShop.
More than 30 of its games have been discounted in total, including a large number of the SEGA AGES range, several Sonic games, and a handful of other titles also worth your time. At the time of writing, the sale is only live in Europe - we'll make sure to update this article if we hear of a similar deal taking place across North America.
For now, though, here are all the deals you can currently enjoy from Sega on the eShop:
Yes!! I've been waiting for Sonic Forces to go on sale for ages. I hear it's not good enough for full price, but £25 seems reasonable for a fan of the series like myself.
Sonic Mania is of course amazing (probably my second favourite Switch platformer after DK Tropical Freeze) and you should all pick it up if you've not done so!
@Gerald I remember they said, like 2 years ago, that they'd bring over Dreamcast games if the smaller Sega Ages titles sold well. Jet Set Radio would be great.
@Clyde_Radcliffe Since you're talking about favorite 2D platformers on Switch, what are your thoughts on Rayman Legends? It's my favorite 2D platformer in general, slightly better than Tropical Freeze in my book. I would highly recommend it if you haven't played it.
@Not_Soos To be honest I've never much warmed to Rayman as a character and that's always put me off somewhat, but I think there's a demo of it on the eShop so I'll keep an open mind and try it. 👍
Lol another boring 'sega sale' that's all I ever hear from sega these days, gosh how many times are they going to sell sonic 2 and columns, they need to make more games like a ristar 2 or boogerman 2, give us something new
Oh, it's just in Europe...oh well. I have Mania, and I think that's the only one I would want unless they bring Colors or Generations to Switch, and I see no reason on Sega's part to.
@Peteykins Or just buy it for any console when it's not on sale, period. And you are just being plain old stupid if you want to get Forces. It's not cringey bad, it's just bad bad.
@MeowMeowKins It's not stupid. People need to try games for themselves and form their own opinions. It's more stupid to only follow others. Haven't you ever enjoyed a game that many others didn't or found a popular game awful to play? Nintendo Life gave it a 6 which is just above average and many Sonic fans find the game decent, if not one of the best in the series. For £25 I'll take a chance and see if I like it. It's not like I'll be paying £50 for it!
@Clyde_Radcliffe Sorry if that came off as rude, I really am. I get it. I find great enjoyment in Sunshine, and many people didn't like that. I'm just saying it's a bit dumb to buy it and expect it to be, say, Colors like. I've seen people do that, even AFTER the game has been out a long time.
@Clyde_Radcliffe I thought that one was all right, really wish you had gotten to customize who was on your team. I don't WANT to be stuck with Knuckles just because I like Tails. God 😤
@Dr_Corndog like, how did they make Sonic 06, but make the Persona series (Persona 5 Royal in particular). It's like Sony with the emoji movie and the Into the Spiderverse, like...what?
@mr_eman made an account just to reply to this lol. Yeah, it's a bit steep for a PS3 era game but Catherine Full Body is definitely worth full price imo.
I've had mono and have been stuck in bed since the game launched and can honestly say it's been the highlight of the past month for me haha. It's a pretty long game (took me maybe 15-17 hours to beat the first time around) and Full Body has some quality of life/rebalancing work done to it that makes it the definitive way to play it.
It's also a really good port for Switch and is basically 1:1 with the PS4 version, which is always nice!
@Andee asked myself the same thing and did a dive on YT to find answers a few weeks ago.
iirc, Phantasy Star 1 is great (especially for a Master System game) and the Sega Ages version probably has enough quality of life improvements to make it worth a look (especially if it's on sale). PS2, despite being iconic hasn't aged particularly well (this is the only one I've played and I always honestly lose interest in the first hour). PS3 and PS4 have aged better apparently though and I think they're on the Sega Genesis collection on Switch.
I might be the only one on planet earth who thinks so, but the Sega Ages version of Phantasy Star is my favorite game on Switch so far.
I never played it prior to this version. So I had no nostalgia attached to it (or to other games in the series) and for some reason it totally sucked me in. The QOL improvements are really great and feel full of love and respect to the original vision. (Typical M2) The story is basic, but I personally found the whole experience "immersive" in a way. I can't explain properly why, and would recommend not taking my extreme opinion as a reference. But I really dig it.
@NicheAbou cheers, thanks! I'm happy to roll the dice, especially at that price - plus I do have that very Mega Drive collection with the rest of the series on it, but I'm a bit of a stickler for completionism, so I would like to see where it all began!
@sleepinglion
Honestly, this might sound super sad and pathetic. But I check news sites daily hoping to see an announcement for Jet Set Radio or REZ as part of the Ages line.
Sega said before they are looking into bringing Dreamcast releases to the Ages lineup. And an old news said that Sega shared the info on JSR being the most demanded game from them to get a port.
So based on that, I have hope.
And they do a splendid job with these releases no matter what. I wish others would take note. Though M2 can't do every port for every game. Sadly.
@Yanina sounds like something I could get into! Might have to pick it up to play once Persona 4 Golden releases me from its icey grip (in uhhhh, like another 70 hours of game time)
@RunGMhx The order does not matter, although playing 1 first will provide some small story context to 4. Its generally agreed that 1 has the better story but 4 has the better gameplay. I loved the story in 4 as much as 1 personally. They’re both fantastic and well worth your time, especially at these same prices!
@MeowMeowKins@MeowMeowKins The reason I like 06 is because it tried to be something. It’s the antithesis of Forces. Forces is a bad game because it’s literally a empty game. It played it too safe to be fun. Which is sad because the marketing showed all these classic Sonic villains (classic as in iconic, not like Classic Sonic), and never used any of them except Zavok, who’s literally the worst Sonic villain. The game pretended it would be the game to bring back the Dreamcast and dark age stuff people love, but it’s the same play-it-safe philosophy as Colors. Colors used that to its advantage, being a soft reboot basically, to ease in new fans after a slew of “convoluted” games. But after so 7 years of that stuff, Forces was a shining hope (oh. oh no. I accidentally referenced the game.) in many peoples minds, promising to be the game to try new stuff. This was a lie.
Anyway, 06 was going to be a soft reboot, like Colors. The game took risks, adding three major characters: Silver, Elise, and Memphis (Mephiles, if you must). Silver was a hedgehog from a ruined future, who was tricked by Mephiles to think Sonic was the Iblis Trigger. Iblis is the destructive entity of the week, who destroyed the world in Silver’s time. Elise is the actual Iblis trigger. That’s the basic story premise. The gameplay builds off of Adventure 2 and Shadow. It’s good.
But everything in this game is hindered by the rush. This game HAD to be out before two artificial deadlines: Sonic’s 15th anniversary which only Sega cared about, and Christmas. As a result the game is so broken it’s almost unplayable sometimes, not to mention the sometimes minute long loading screens. But the story, gameplay, graphics (besides NPCs) and music are all there. The game was something, which you can’t say about Forces.
@Goat_FromBOTW that's true. Guess I never thought about it from what they were trying to do, just what they accomplished. It's still pretty funny, with some of the glitches and such.
The fact that some Sega Ages titles have had bigger reductions than others (approx. 60p) makes me wonder if it shows which titles have been the more successful. Unfortunately for me it suggests the 2 Thunderforce titles have been less successful which may impact the release of more of Technosoft’s Classic titles.
Id have jumped on both Valkyria games if i didnt have them already. Been pondering Panzer D since release but have always changed my mind for some reason at the last minute. Maybe i really dont want it as much as my wallet thinks i do.
@MeowMeowKins No worries. I loved Sunshine too and actually preferred it to Odyssey which I couldn't really get into (changing into different characters and having to learning new move-sets all the time got annoying)
And I agree it's annoying you can't pick your own team in Team Racing! I wanted a team of Sonic, Knuckles and Amy. Speaking of Sonic Adventure, it kind of reminds me of a Sonic Adventure racing game. A lot of references and it did make me wonder if there's some truth to the rumour of a Sonic Adventure remake coming our way.
@Clyde_Radcliffe if you haven't already definitely give it a shot. Still play it for a giggle and had it since it's Wii U release. Couldn't get into Tropical Freeze (preferred Jungle beat for DK) but Rayman Legends is so light hearted and content rich always keeps me dipping in. Co ops a heap of fun too.
@Kidfunkadelic83 everytime I think I will grab Panzer Dragoon I read a review or watch a video and it just looks like it is "missing" something. Ended up with PD Orta on Xbox last time I got the PD urge (it's £9.19 not on sale).
@Yanina yeah that was the vibe I got from Switch Panzer Dragoon vids and reviews. A real shame to be honest. I'd love a Panzer Dragoon, Starfox, Kid Icarus (Uprising style)or Sin and Punishment done well for Switch.
@FargusPelagius yeah i always look at it and think i really fancy it then watch a video and change my mind. It does look good but as ive got no nostalgia for the game and i feel its geared more towards those that do.
@Jaxx420 true. How much do you suggest they make us pay. I sold my copy because I prefer colors, but I still have the one for the 3ds. I would totally buy it if for, say, 20 dollars?
@FargusPelagius Yeah I agree. Was also looking forward to it. And it even was a reason for me to get a Switch at the time it was announced. I did not know back then that its was not made by Sega themself.
Is there any sega ages game out that wasn't released as a 3D Classic yet? I'm on the fence, but I think I got all the 3D Classics I was interested in back then. I have a hard time recalling because I played so many Sega collections already.
A warning to anyone contemplating the Mega Drive Classics. There is still noticeable lag, at least on some games, which hinders playability. Sonic 1 and Streets of Rage 2 are the ones I’ve tested briefly and it is very noticeable. Streets of Rage 3 on the other hand is playable though doesn’t feel as smooth as the one available on PC via Steam.
@NicheAbou Good to hear it's a solid port. Played it when it came out on PS3 and interested in double dipping for the additional story content and enhancements.
@Slowdive Thanks for the video. That certainly better justifies the selling price. I bought the original on the PS3 back in the day and was looking to double dip, but may wait for a deeper discount before taking the plunge.
I bought Valkyria Chronicles 1, since I enjoy tactical RPGs and this game is mentioned in several lists of best games of the genre that I read around. If I like it, I'll buy VC4 in a future Sega sale.

That's great pricing on AGES titles, though the line could totally use some new releases
Come on Sega, what are the next batch of Ages games?
If you’ve not played Valkyria Chronicles then this is the perfect chance to play an absolute gem.
@Gerald I remember they said, like 2 years ago, that they'd bring over Dreamcast games if the smaller Sega Ages titles sold well. Jet Set Radio would be great.
Valk4 is worth a run. Shining at £11 also - it is better than tons of the ports or Indies out on Switch that cost more than that. Finished both.
I have pretty much all I want from that list bar the odd SEGA AGES game that has been wishlisted. Guess I'll probably DL those now!
Okay, citizens of space is happening. I liked citizens of earth a lot, and with that price drop...0
@Kasma88 Which one? 1 or 4? Does the order matter?
Nothing in the US for this, but next time Sega Ages go on sale i'm grabbing Fantasy Zone for sure.
@Peteykins
FTFY
@Clyde_Radcliffe Since you're talking about favorite 2D platformers on Switch, what are your thoughts on Rayman Legends? It's my favorite 2D platformer in general, slightly better than Tropical Freeze in my book. I would highly recommend it if you haven't played it.
None of these titles pique my interest in the slightest...
@Not_Soos To be honest I've never much warmed to Rayman as a character and that's always put me off somewhat, but I think there's a demo of it on the eShop so I'll keep an open mind and try it. 👍
Picked up Catherine Full Body, had the Japanese version but a localised version with DLC is great!
Know Catherine: Full Body just come out last month, but even that's still a bit high for a PS3 era game with some DLC.
Now if I could just get Sonic 3/ Knuckles and the Echo games.
its bit mehhhhhhh sale not really that many good deals all been cheaper on ps store
Don't know about the other games, but the SEGA AGES titles are even cheaper on the South African eShop. All £2.48 - £2.91.
Sega give the people what they want...........................the house of the DEAD collection!
Lol another boring 'sega sale' that's all I ever hear from sega these days, gosh how many times are they going to sell sonic 2 and columns, they need to make more games like a ristar 2 or boogerman 2, give us something new
@Gerald amen to that! I hope there will be more!! Wouldn’t make sense for them to stop here. 😕
The series completely passed me by, but is Phantasy Star any good?
Oh, it's just in Europe...oh well. I have Mania, and I think that's the only one I would want unless they bring Colors or Generations to Switch, and I see no reason on Sega's part to.
@Peteykins
Or just buy it for any console when it's not on sale, period. And you are just being plain old stupid if you want to get Forces. It's not cringey bad, it's just bad bad.
@Incarna never played it, sorry m8, and good luck.
@Goat_FromBOTW I live for Adventure 2 and Sonic 06, the former because it's my childhood and the latter because...Sonic 06.
I just decided to get Project Diva whenever it's on sale. Literally just made the decision this weekend.
If I buy ONE game on this list, what game should it be?
It still feels weird every time I'm reminded that Sega owns Atlus.
@MeowMeowKins It's not stupid. People need to try games for themselves and form their own opinions. It's more stupid to only follow others. @MeowMeowKins In fact a lot of people said Sonic Team Racing was a lousy game but I enjoyed it a lot!

@Andee I think it will hard to get into 2-4 after you played 1 with the QOL improvements. At least thats how it was for me.
@Yanina Yeah, that's how I felt going into Resident Evil 5 on PS3 having played the fantastic motion control version of RE4 on Wii
Is Shining worth that price? Looks like your run of the mill Anime-filled JRPG.
@eltomo IIRC there is a demo available.
@MeowMeowKins Completely different teams within completely different subsidiaries. Plus, Sonic 06 had its own set of issues in development.
@Yanina sounds like something I could get into! Might have to pick it up to play once Persona 4 Golden releases me from its icey grip (in uhhhh, like another 70 hours of game time)
@Peteykins Same goes for Capcom really
@RunGMhx

@MeowMeowKins thanks!
They need to port Sonic Generations over!
Can this please come to America? I'd love to finish up the Sega Ages library, and pick up Cathrine.
@Dr_Corndog I'm aware. Doesn't stop it from being surprising though.
@Yanina hey, I check news sites for P5 coming to Switch. Don't feel bad.
@VegasKeith no problem 😉
@Jaxx420 I want it too...but how much money could they make?
Three of my favourite games on that list - Out Run, Thunder Force IV and Sonic The Hedgehog.
@MeowMeowKins @MeowMeowKins The reason I like 06 is because it tried to be something. It’s the antithesis of Forces. Forces is a bad game because it’s literally a empty game. @Goat_FromBOTW and I DID want it, now that I think about it. Thanks!
@MeowMeowKins Oh I have no doubt 06 turned out bad. But the potential game buried underneath the unpolished controls and glitches is gold lol

Thunderforce 4 is great shooter if you like a good challenge! If no one played this then you should dip into your piggybank its a no brainer 🤔😁
@MeowMeowKins More than they made from porting a few of the others if they price it right.
@MeowMeowKins No worries. I loved Sunshine too and actually preferred it to Odyssey which I couldn't really get into (changing into different characters and having to learning new move-sets all the time got annoying)

@Jaxx420 I mean, yeah. Next stop, Sega!

Picked up Outrun but I already have most of those, still mulling over Super Monkey Ball
