During an E3 segment with IGN showcasing Dead or Alive 6, the team behind the long-time fighting game series was queried about the possibility of the latest entry coming to the Nintendo Switch.
Shedding some light on the matter, it was explained technical hurdles would need to be overcome “in the coming days” before the game was even considered for the device. Maybe then, there would be a chance.
The developer Team Ninja has maintained good relations with Nintendo over the years, taking on the responsibility of Metroid: Other M during the Wii generation, Hyrule Warriors in the Wii U era and more recently handling Fire Emblem Warriors on the Switch. Back in 2011, the 3DS also played host to the team's Dead or Alive: Dimensions, which was praised as a quality portable fighting game.
Would you like to see the Dead or Alive series eventually make its way across to the Nintendo Switch? Let us know in the comments.

that can be said about every third party game, really.
Just bring me Soul Calibur 6 instead!
I'm just gonna say it now, DOA6 will not be coming to Switch. No insider info needed.
I would like to see it come to Switch, especially as the characters seem less ridiculous.
DOA 5 Plus on Vita was brilliant. It was great fun to play, looked fantastic and the performance was solid too. If they put their minds to it I'm sure they can get this working on Switch - I'd buy it for sure.
Please let this work as if Nintendo needs to help with getting the game the switch they should.
Would buy this day one
@FragRed you do know that both games are made by different companies right. Koei owns DOA while namco owns soul caliber. Would like both to be honest
Q) Would you like to see the Dead or Alive series eventually make its way across to the Nintendo Switch?
A) Not eventually per say, but if it is announced prior to the other system released versions, I'll have to start seriously considering whether I want this game on the Xbox One or Switch. Being able to practise fighting games on the go was my biggest interest in the Switch's handheld capabilities, and I absolutely love the combat of Dead or Alive.
Dead or Alive 6 wasn't something I was expecting at E3, but it's currently the top of my hype list and will be hard to dethrone.
@KingdomHeartsFan Wii U and 3DS could be claimed not to keep up with "current hardware"; Switch very much does - it's just not the kind of hardware that TV-tied consoles are used to. Especially now that both other big players are essentially mimicking the PC architecture in their offerings. GPD Win 2 is an eloquent illustration to the costs and compromises of translating all that stuff and processing power to a portable or hybrid format; the Switch is proving to be not just the first consciously hybrid console (and no, modular Chinese Android tablets don't count), but also the most capable hybrid console and the most capable portable gaming option to date that can simultaneously remain commercially viable for a broad audience.
So yeah, now you ARE "playing with POWER" again. XD
Jumpsuits all around!
Ah, I would love that, as a huge fan of DoA. Although, pretty sure it won't happen.
I’d love to see DOA game on Switch. I dont really care if its 5 or 6.
@KingdomHeartsFan My point was that DOA5 was very good on a less powerful handheld (the Vita) so surely they could do a good job of DOA6 on Switch if they really put some effort into it. It was DOA6 I was saying that I would buy.
@Curlybobs Don't fret Mr Bobs. I understood what ya meant
@KingdomHeartsFan
Because he could play on the go AND on a TV with friends/family AND on the go with friends/family?
If now ARM compliant version of the engine exists, then porting to Switch on a base level an afterwards optimizing the graphics would be an amount of work that might / might not pay off.
Dead or Alive Dimensions was awesome. Hopefully 6 does make it eventually.
It would be cool, but it would definitely be hard if the game is fairly demanding. This isn't a game you can realistically just cut to 30fps. Doom and other FPS games can afford to run at 30 because other big games have (Destiny), but fighting games? No way.
I would love to see this on Switch. Not a fan of how overly sexual it is, but I love the rock, paper, scissors style gameplay between strikes, throws, and counter holds.
Gonna get this on PS4.
The only Dead or Alive game I've ever played is Dimensions on 3DS, and I loved it. LOVED it. Dead or Alive instantly became my favourite fighting franchise of all time based on this one game alone and it drives me absolutely crazy that subsequent instalments have not been released on Nintendo hardware.
I was so close to buying a PS3 (even though I had no interest in owning one otherwise) purely for Dead or Alive 5. That is how good an impression Dimensions had left on me. I resisted, and I'm glad I did, as V: Last Round was announced for PS4 literally days later and I couldn't justify such an expensive console for a single game, no matter how good it is.
I was tempted to buy Last Round on Steam a little while ago, and they turned it into a F2P abomination with characters and modes locked behind obscenely expensive DLC. I would have paid the standard full price for the core experience, but there is no way in hell that that I'm indulging that kind of B.S.
So I really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really hope they bring V and VI to Switch. It's absolute insanity that Koei has released no less than SIX Warriors games in the last 15 months alone on Switch (with a seventh on the way!!!), and yet they didn't think to port Dead or Alive V. For shame, Koei. For shame.
@KingdomHeartsFan Hey, no agro from me mate
@KingdomHeartsFan
What?! I just gave an example, why DoA 6 would make sense on the Switch, even though he played a DoA game ln the Vita. 🙄
not day 1, but i'm gonna get it on PC or PS4 anyways.
@KingdomHeartsFan
I see. Then sorry, man.👍
@BraveLilac I think it's often to do with the engine powering the game and the overall development environment being compatible with the console you want to port it to (assuming physical inputs etc are as expected for the game). Switch can run Unreal Engine, for example, so it makes graphical downgrades and a relatively easy port possible. If the game is created with a custom engine, and it's not available for Switch, no amount of graphical changes will make a port easy... It becomes more of a rebuild at that point.
@Jamotello
yeah. being so far behind in specs doesn't endear the thing to many 3rd parties.
when games cost so much to make devs need to spread that easily throughout the ecosystem and the switch is pretty far behind to make it difficult.
the x2 may help that a little but it's on N to iterate the switch faster than the home based consoles to not be left out on everything.
They're just making excuses like all 3rd party devs, if they could make DOA5 work on PS Vita they could make DOA6 work on Switch. This is just them finding excuses so fans wouldn't lash at them had they actually confirm it. Not confirming it yet will save them from the doom and gloom.
@BraveLilac Turning down settings can only get you so much. There are other factors that play a part in a games performance that simply changing the settings cannot fix. A few simple examples would be:
Those are just some possible reasons to try and give you a rough idea. I had to write this very quickly due to work but i hope it helps somewhat.
That would be legit. I would partake.
@sword_9mm
It will never get there though. Even if Nintendo broke the bank on the very latest tech (switch isn’t that far behind) it would still come up quite short in terms of raw power. That’s the price of portability. Personally it’s a price I’m willing to take but others might disagree.
They could do the do the dock with it’s own processing but that would probably make the performance too superior to portable and hard to make a game that works for both.
@FragRed I'd love Soul Calibur VI portable...heck I'd take II, III, or IV portably on my Switch. Have VI preordered for my Xbox, but I'd change that in a heartbeat if a Switch version were announced. Playing Soul Calibur on the big TV is always a pain, with everyone asking me: are you done with that fighting game yet?
Dead or Alive is okay, but I've always found it one step up from Virtua Fighter, and that's not a great thing.
They should make a dead or alive switch edition build from the ground up. One that actually works great. Put in a Nintendo Character and its sold out from day one.
Just bring everything to Switch.
I will not certainly getting it on the PS4 because I just don't feel like getting it. But if it comes to Switch, I will get it.
@TheMadPolarBear Lowering resolution and textures is one of the easiest changes to make and is also the quickest way to bypass the lower amount of RAM on the Switch.
As a 1v1 fighting game, this IS the type of third party content I expect to see coming to Switch. A lot of the issues you mentioned with AI, larger maps, and physics aren't as relevant.
Although as you mentioned if the Switch doesn't support the engine then a ton of work is involved either way.
I mean, I'll take any good game that comes to Switch. But just saying it's a possibility isn't really news.
Switch is getting a lot of fighting games though. BlazBlue is awesome, actually. Which kind of surprised me because I wasn't expecting a really good game out of it- I mean, I was expecting a decent game but not one that really grabbed me like it has.
If capcom could get Super Street Fighter 4 to work on the 3DS, I'm sure they can do the same with this.
There is something wrong somewhere. For something that will have 35million units by end of year, it is getting skipped left and right.
If the GPD WIN2 hits 499, im calling it a day. I can't do this 2nd class citizen nonsense. They even get to play Madden on the go now. Ill use the Switch for nintendo games like the WiiU
I would love DOA6 to come to the Switch. Dimensions was fantastic on the 3DS and turned out to be one of the best games in the series. DOA5 was a big disappointment because of all the pricey DLC, so hopefully 6 won't go that route too.
"Technical Hurdles"... AKA They need a larger memory card just for their game alone for the $2 mil worth of DLC the will release for it.
@BraveLilac @TheMadPolarBear @Indielink The main reason, is that they don’t really want to just ‘downgrade’ the graphics - or at least that’s not the ideal way of doing it. Ideally, you want the same (or similar) looking quality but running on the lower spec hardware. The way to do this, without turning off effects or elements of the graphics, is to code more efficiently (among other tricks). Other than just better coding, the tricks that Nintendo use in Odyssey (just for example) mean that graphical assets that the users don’t really notice, are reduced in quality/moved into 2D mode... this means that for most scenes, they have an appearance of high quality effects enabled for what the user can see, as opposed to the solution you mention which means that a bunch of special graphical effects and features are just switched off.
There are other more detailed explanations, but that’s just one aspect. There’s also the fact that the game engine that the PC version of a game runs on (or PS4) may not run at all on another console (the Switch) due to the CPU / chipset / performance etc. So then they have to be modified to work in a different engine than what the game was originally coded in.
Additionally, sometimes these games (for PS4 / Pc for example) are coded knowing there is a large amounts of ‘extra’ power available. This in turn means that it isn’t always necessary to code ‘super efficiently’ and code is sometimes a bit sloppy because frankly, there isn’t always a need to spend the time/effort ensuring every last drop of performance utilised.
When you move the game to a platform where there isn’t that over abundance of power, you need to make improvements to the code to make sure it’s as well customised / efficient relative to the platform it’s on.
Switch is missing out on alot of big fighting games.
@MsJubilee Probably or the Switch may be getting them late like other third party titles. Reason for that is because unlike other platforms Switch isn't a PC based hardware and a lot of triple A games nowadays are made with PC in mind so porting that to Switch would take efforts which most devs don't want to deal with.
Inb4 they give in to the whole streaming game only crap.
Just excuses.
What really happen is wich this game is to a niche and don't have so much public to it.
@JaxonH
Wait blazblue put already? Thought it won't be out until the end of month
Really interestead on the "plot"
@Arnold-Kage
Yup, it's out. Released a few days ago actually.
I know it was confusing- I had heard June 22nd but, apparently it dropped June 5th.
"Nintendo hardware"
"Technical hurdles"
Every generation, it's like the peanut butter to the jelly.
Dead or Alive 6 would be great or even a deluxe version of DOA5 with all DLC would be fine with me as well.
Kinda laughing at all of the people that seem to be afraid of boobs on this site, do you guys run and hind if you ever see a heavy chested woman?
Slim Stacked Women exist people.
This is definitely an excuse. Dead or Alive is a niche game and the reality is niche games sell well on Switch.
@Silly_G I started with DOA2 on Playstation 2, and tried dimensions, and have DOA5 on a used PS3 I bought on the cheap.
I love the characters' personalities / little story bits, and how the costumes generally add to their personalities. The DLC cost per costume is overly expensive in my opinion, that is kind of a stickler point for me.
Anyway, I agree the game is great per fighting mechanics, as a casual fighting gamer, I like it many times better than SF and Tekken. Smash is best as an overall game, then Soul Caliber (and some minor titles like X-Men Dimensions, Bloody Roar, ~Virtual Fighter) are comparably fun.
It is highly sexualized, which I'm good with some sexy, but they can tend to go overboard with it. Makes me hesitant to eagerly recommend or play the game without generally being aware of who may spectate it, so that makes the game more niche (if I could filter which costumes (and maybe even chars) are accessible, which could appear either completely and per random costume selection, that'd probably help) In general it'd help to not have to wade through costumes I'd never use in saving time in the char selection screen).
But yeah, case in point, I tried telling a friend I thought the DOA mechanics were actually good in terms of fighting games, and he was essentially all like 'oh yeah, sure, the mechanics are what you're playing it for <eye roll>'. It's kind of the reputation the game has though. Anyway, it would be neat if it came on the Switch.
@JaxonH
Thanks need to go buy it then on the eshop
@Agramonte "For something that will have 35million units by end of year, it is getting skipped left and right."
3DS had 70+ million, how many games skipped it?
We may see Switch as a home console, but look at all of the 3rd parties marketing their games, they usually refer to it as their games on the go. PS4 and X1 are the home console versions, Switch is the portable version. For companies that want a portable version of their game they'll put it on Switch. For 3rd parties Switch is the new 3DS, they don't need or want a new Nintendo home console, they already have 2 of those.
Switch is replacing the 3DS, Vita and PSP. PS5 will soon replace the PS4, and probably a new Xbox will replace X1. Companies won't be viewing Switch as a home console alongside PS5 and X2 power.
Don't be fooled by Switch getting FIFA 19, PS3 and Xbox360 are as well. Switch is last Gen home, this Gen handheld.

@DeltaPeng : I don't think it was that sexualised, but this is judging from Dimensions alone. In fact, there was no sexual content in the game whatsoever (from memory) aside from the fact that female characters' breasts jiggle in an exaggerated way (mercifully not as exaggerated as Otaku-oriented games, in which the females are often infantilised).
I love the mechanics and the somewhat destructible and interactive environments. Kicking people off stairs and buildings never gets old. The (generally) really attractive cast is also a bonus, but the downside to this is that I feel bad for beating up certain characters.
I really don't buy it. From a mechanical and functional standpoint, the Switch can handle any type of game. The problem is that it cannot handle the same level of graphics. The issue is whether the third party companies in question are willing to tone down the graphics in exchange for the portability.
BUT would you be willing to shell out 8 grand for the costume DLC?
@BraveLilac Because there is two major things at play (not counting many others), but the two major things is CPU optimization and GPU optimization. A fighting game is going to be attempted to look pretty. This is a no brainer, as there isn't much else going on - they're going to try to make it look visually pleasing. This part is likely not the issue. Its likely the engine needing to be coded with an nvidia cpu in mind where the X1 and PS4 use AMD hardware. This alone creates a very massive technical hurdle as different vendors have their cpu's process in vastly different, and very specific, ways.
The PC version is always made in mind with PC hardware up to a certain extent. Many Hardware isn't even tested, and is luck of the draw with the community. They learn what works an what doesn't after its in the hands of players.
TL;DR - X1/PS4 generally all AMD hardware. PC a vastly different beast, and Switch is all Nvidia Hardware. Console ver optimized for AMD hardware. PC ver will have no optimization for Nvidia CPU, only GPU.
Maybe I just buy DOA for Vita. That was apparently pretty good.
I'd love to see DOA 6 on Switch. It's my favorite 3D fighting series (and the heavy fan service is only a small part of the reasons why).
Who wants a match on Dead or Alive: Dimensions? Let me know!! @Silly_G
@Curlybobs My thoughts exactly. They pull it off, and I will happily throw money at it.
@FragRed Never gonna happen.
Who would want to play this at 30fps with mangled visuals?
The game is being built for the PS4, so just play it on the PS4.
Make it happen guys. Just think of all the money you could make off Nintendo themed DLC outfits.
@rjejr No I hear you. I see my Switch as a VITA replacement. And yeah agree - I do not think crazy stuff like Anthem would be on Switch - they already have 2 home consoles for that. That is how I use my Switch: I play Battle Chasers on the go and fire up Monster Hunter World or AC: Origin when I get home. So I am ok with that.
But they could find/make something else Big! on the side for Switch. It is 35 million people you can sell $60 games at by Christmas. All that is worth is some random jumping motorcycle game? People cant afford to make a new Rayman or Child of Light with those numbers 🙄
I want the game on my switch
