Hold the front page. Nintendo has finally confirmed that Super Smash Bros. is coming to the Nintendo Switch this year.
The news was revealed during today's Nintendo Direct broadcast, and was very much the "just one more thing" megaton, left right to the very end.
Sadly, no gameplay was shown, but we do know that Splatoon's Inklings will be joining the roster. Link and Mario were also shown in the footage.

Great reveal!
Hyped
If it’s due this year it’s most assuredly going to be an enhanced port. I have no problem with that. There’s no sense in building Smash from the ground-up all over again. Just keep the great template Smash 4 made and add to it.
The reveal was amazing! Splatoon was the greatest build-up!!
Yeah, it's gonna be a great year two.
Nice!!!
Definitely a Smash 4 port.
The internet is going to explode in 3, 2, 1...
I'm hoping it's a port. It's too soon for a Smash 5.
Breath of the Wild Link and no Smash Switch subtitle immediatly revealed gives me immense hope its not a port! HYPE
I was sitting in a pizza shop when I remembered about the Direct. I caught the reveal. I probably looked like the N64 kid on Christmas. I couldn't contain myself.
When they said one more announcement...
.. I didn't want to think it was Smash Bros..... And I was proven wrong! So excited! E3 can't be here any faster
@thesilverbrick How you know its a port? its been 4 years since last one, maybe there using same engine though.
Can we confirm that it's a port with added characters (inklings, BOTW link, etc)?
I screamed when the logo came on my screen
ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED
If it's a complete new game bring it on if it's a port no thanks
OH. MY. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
The official website for Smash (http://www.smashbros.com/en_AU/index.html) lists it as Super Smash Bros (title pending) and it is being developed by HAL.
I am absolutely hyped for this game!
10, unless it's a port. In which case I won't be supporting the Switch at all, ever.
Just can’t say for certain if it’s a port. My gut is telling me it is, but the logo is different. Much different. Here’s hoping.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH! The way they revealed it was beyond hype. It was beautiful!
Smash - port
Captain toads treasure tracker - port
South Park - port
Crash bandicoot - port
Port machine?
@illmatic20xx Development on Smash 4 didn’t end until 2016 when Bayonetta was added. There’s no way they’re pumping out a brand new, ground-up Smash game in two years.
Yo I'll splat a dude with attitude I don't carrot all like rabbit food. Translation: yes I'm hyped.
So excited! Now the question is, will this be a brand new entry, or a 3rd entry of the Smash 4 release?
This will be a new entry in the series but similar to Smash 4. It will probably have updated textures and new stages and characters yet feel similar to the previous entry like Splatoon 2 is to the original.
A fantastic ending to the Direct, it gives me hope that E3 will be huge if they can drop this bomb now
What was that? Was that a mic drop? Why I think it was!
Here Nintendo, you forgot this:
I have a feeling this won't be a port. They made a big deal out of showing Breath of the Wild Link there at the end. I know that would be an easy change, but I just have a hunch...
I'd much rather it be a port than built from the ground up. Easier to take the entire roster of fighters and stages from both versions and DLC, and add to them and perhaps add a Story Mode.
I thought that it would just be a port with Inklings but the Link in the trailer is the one from Breath of the Wild....so Smash 5?
I'm glad
but I hope that its smash 5.. and not just a port with inkling DLC.
Eight.
Dark souls - port
As soon as I saw the splatoon paint I knew it was a Smash Bros reveal, it couldn't be anything else splatoon related! Great news for 2018!
Boom!
If it’s a port from the Wii U game, I’m ok with that. I don’t care for DK Tropical Freeze and Hyrule Warriors But I will definitely pick this up.
Marvelous ecstatic celebratory exclamations of joyous reaction!!
Released alongside 80 or so alternate pose amiibo?
And what will they do about the Wii Fit Trainer unless they have a new Fit game in the works?
@Euler its probably a port. But anyway that smash announcement saved the direct in my mind.
YOUPI!!!!!!!! It was time! Inkling and maybe Octoling in Smash!
@sauce Wait for it being a Breath of the Wild mii costume
@Nintendoforlife: Yes
@Everyone_Else: The background music was from Brawl's Subspace Emissary mode.
Lol I’ve never played a smash Bros game, hopefully it’s as good as everyone says it is!
Is it better with other people or is there a single campaign?
awesome, can't wait! wonder what are they gonna do with this one as far as past dlcs and stuff. all in all a good direct from my perspective
Heck yes. Especially considering i only had the 3ds version of smash 4.
MYYYYYYYYYY
WAAAAAAALLLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETTTTTT
@thesilverbrick Unless we go the Splatoon route and they add new free and paid content over the next few years? Might not be super popular, but its that or waiting forever for Sakurai to pack the same with so much like he does....
@sillygostly Same thing they did with the Duck Hunt dog or Mr. Game & Watch. Characters in Smash don’t have to be featured in modern games to qualify.
10 billion/ 10 b
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCC6ZhRS7sY
Definitely a port, for anyone wondering.
I'm so glad we're finally getting Inklings.
It’s definetely a port. Has to be be if it’s coming 2018
@Deathwalka: Better multiplayer, though since Melee, the single player hasn't been barebones. It's great both ways, better with others.
RIP Wii U, your last job is now done.
Super hyped whether its a whole new entry or a Smash 4 port.
@Mgene15 and a glorious one at that!
Using the Splatoon 1 E3 2014(?) reveal was really clever... totally thought it was a 3ds single player platformer or something. Must have faith in the franchise to lead a smash reveal with it.
It might be a port but as @Danpal65 mentioned on the website it's listed as "nintendo switch super smash bros" (working title)... this leads me to believe it will be a new game. Also BoTW link!!! Right?
@thesilverbrick Oh yeah lol forgot dlc. long they add enough new content. Direct was great octopath July, Mario Tennis is looking good, and octo expansion day one for me.
The release is slated for 2018, but it will be postponed after development is announced for a 3DS port in favor of releasing both games simultaneously. /s
If it’s a port, boooo!
It’s a new game yaayyyy!
I’m just so sick of playing with people who take the game too seriously, memorizing framerates and all that none sense. Get a job and a life , and stop pissing everyone off.... or is it just me?
I am in hype overdrive mode
11/10
The rest of the direct was disappointing as far as first-party goes. Ports galore on both Switch and 3DS. Sick of this. Only looking forward to Octopath Traveler. Smash is the only exception I'll make to double dip as it is a big multiplayer based game and the $60 will be justified by the amount of content.
@PuzzleMaster7 Mario Kart?
The website credits HAL laboratory who didn't work on the wii u game... I'm starting to believe
I feel like I'm the only one who isn't super excited about this. I mean I'm happy we're getting it but it's going to more than likely just be Smash 4 but with additional content. It's hard for me to get so excited for all of these Wii U ports this year, but nonetheless, at least everyone else is happy.
I hope it's a port. Smash 4 is incredible. As long as all DLC is included this is going to be a phenomenal release.
@Nico85 I am all over that BotW Link. Best Link design / 10.
The only real highlight for me of the Direct. And it's another Wii U port.
if this turns out to be another sodding port. No wonder nintendo are aiming for longer than a 6 year cycle. The first few years are all wii u ports, maybe when they have finally milked that dry they will make something decent
I wish they just stated whether this is a port so it won’t be a huge argument online for months. I feel like they wouldn’t announce a new Smash outside of E3, they would’ve just saved it... but it’s been 4 years, I’d rather have a new entry than a port at this point.
I will say when they said it was one last thing and I saw more Splatoon I got disappointed for a sec - I love Splatoon but I still am plenty happy with 2 and was worried they were giving us a 3DS entry or another new mode or something, and I felt that was a disappointing note to end on. Instead they gave us an awesome but cryptic Smash trailer that I’m sure they know will break the internet as people try to determine if it’s a new game or a port.
@Expa0 Well.....lets get Mario Maker on the Switch before we truly put our Wii Us in a coffin.
@Mgene15 the ps4 has over 50 ports. Settle down.
It’s an 11
This and crash bandicoot made my damn day. Day 1 for both baby!!
@Mgene15 Video games are not yogurts in your fridge with an expiry date. Get over it.
I literally jumped up and screamed "NO FREAKIN WAY" to the dismay of my brother
Three confirmed charcters: Mario, inklings (both genders), and BotW Link (you can tell because of the hair)
THE HYPE TRAIN HATH NO BREAKS
The only way I would want a new game is if it was better than 4. Sequels aren't always better than their predecessors.
I thought the “one more thing” would be confirming the Diablo 3 port, but this was way better. And that Splatoon DLC looks phenomenal too!
@thesilverbrick Yet that's exactly what they did with Smash 3DS and Smash U (two separate installments according to the main developer). Began development in March 2012, went live in 2014. There's time, especially if they were able to reuse some assets.
@Capt_N thanks for the response appreciated!
@Mgene15 Sorry but Smash hasn’t been confirmed to be a port and both Crash and South Park are current gen games so are multiplatform, not ports. If COD was to be announced for Switch, would you have called that a port too? SMH
@thesilverbrick DLC content is never done by the main developer studio, it doesn't need as much work especially if it was just new characters and stages.
Making a SSB game usually takes long. SSB64 took 1, SSBM 1.5, SSBB 1.5, and SSB4. Seeing how Sakurai hasn't been involved with any other games for the past 4 years, so it's not surprising they already announce one for the NS. Oh, and it's a new one; ports don't use placeholder names or completly change character models from the ground up.
Whether it's a port of Smash 4 or an all new Smash game, I'm happy. Here's hoping we get more than the Inklings, though. I'm hoping for Krystal from Star Fox. :3
@thesilverbrick Considering we saw Breath of the Wild Link I don't think it will just be another port
Meh
Not to change the subject. I'm gonna be honest. I managed to also catch the Splatoon DLC announcements and that would have been hype enough for me. Fantastic support for this game. Feel like they've surpassed the support for Splatoon 1 by a mile already
I really don't get the port hate.
What would a smash 5 offer that smash 4 doesn't? wouldn't smash 4 with more content on top of the game be better? you'd get much more characters, many more stages, more game modes etc.
@Deathwalka: you're welcome!
At first I thought this was a trailer for the original Splatoon on Switch, then it got dark I had a feeling it was Smash.
@ShadJV I too thought we were getting a 3DS Splatoon.
BotW Link too!
This is a 10/10 ! Excited !
I feel like this is Smash 4 Deluxe edition. All DLC plus some new additions. Which I am totally fine with. Smash 4 was a brilliant game that not enough people got to experience.
Well this certainly threw me for a loop.
@Cosats lol, well said
I honestly can't be hyped until we know more of the roster, I could care less if it's a port unless they add characters worth playing. Inklings are cool, but Splatoon isn't my type of game, so hopefully we get something.
1-10? Those numbers are woefully insufficient. Gimme 1-infinite excitement, and we might be approaching close.
They wiped the entire smashbros.com website and replaced it with a splash page for the new trailer. Would they do that just for a port?
Do we really know for sure if this is a port of Smash Bros Wii U?
I mean, it probably is, but Nintendo's refusal to show any gameplay footage when they easily could have for a Wii U port and the new-colored logo makes me think otherwise.
But even if this is a port, this trailer confirms that there will be new characters, with existing characters being updated to newer models (Twilight Princess Link => Breath of the Wild Link). Whether the updates to existing characters will actually change their move sets...now that's a more interesting question...
Bingo is gonna be fun.
I wouldn't mind if it was a port since I didn't play the Wii U ver. but the way the game was announced has me expecting a new title.
Not that it'll look that much better than the Wii U build or play very differently... But they need something new and exciting after all those ports for the latter part of the year
I think we all knew it would happen, so it isn't as much of a surprise... but that doesn't make us less happy!
@terry93 My thought exactly
THIS DROVE ME CRAZY! I DONT CARE IF ITS JUST A PORT OF WII U AND 3DS VERSIONS! AS LONG AS ITS SMASH, I'LL TAKE IT!
@UmbreonsPapa I mean this is better either way, I just wanna put my 3DS out to pasture, one of the buttons sticks and I don’t carry it with me anyways because I bring my Switch with me so much. Heck, rather disappointed WarioWare wasn’t announced for Switch too, I would’ve loved that.
I REALLY hope this isn’t a port. Super excited for this and can’t wait for E3!
@concra Yeah, I was thinking they were going to port the original to Switch, what we got was even better.
@ShadJV Yeah, I was surprised WarioWare AND Luigi’s Mansion were announced for 3DS. One or both them will hopefully come to Switch sometime in the future.
@patbacknitro18 You don’t think it’s possible they just added an additional costume? Do you honestly think they could put out a Smash game in just two years? It’s never happened before, and these games are getting bigger and bigger with each installment.
VOTE RIDLEY
@JamesJose7 Sakurai himself oversaw the development of the DLC characters in Smash 4.
@Angelic_Lapras_King id probably want the wonderful 101 as well before completely burying it
Might be a hybrid port/sequel like Splatoon 2, a new game but using a lot of the previous game's infrastructure. This would allow it to be made in less time.
@Capt_N Do you have any idea what name the Subspace Emissary track it's taken from has or when it plays? I can't remember it and it's driving me nuts
When is a port not a port? I mean it's Smash, they all pretty much look the same to me. I know the hard core players would know, but really, how much do they gave to change for it to not be a port?
I mean Splatoon 2 to me looked like a port with a 2 at the end. How many weapons, armor and arenas are in there now from the first game?
If they drop 6 characters, add another 6, drop 6 levels, add 6 more, drop amiibo support, drop those stupid Mii fighters, well at what point is it a new game, what's the metric to decide?
And if they take the stuff that wasn't in each verdion, Wii U and 3DS, and merge it into 1, is that a port?
So I'm not sure.
Heres a question - has Nintendo EVER shown off a port without saying it's a port? They always throw something on there to let us know, don't they? All those games moved to and from Wii U, Gamecube, 3DS, don't they always tell us?
4 years since SSB4. 4 years without Sakurai working on Kid Icarus. We got Super Mario Odyssey 4 years after SM3DW, Zelda BotW 5 years after SS. Surely it's possible to make a new SSB game in 4 years, isn't it?
I'm not sure, b/c I'm not sure. I was fully expecting a port, but maybe they decided more money if they call it a new game and resell a dozen DLC characters. I know we were all expecting all the SSB4 DLC in the ported deluxe version, but there's simply no money in that.
So whether it's a port or not, I think that's the title, SSB. So cavear emptor I suppose.
But 2018, that's impressive either way. Guess Metroid and Zelda are both going to be later in 2019.
I don't understand why Nintendo should develop Smash 5 when Smash 4 core gameplay. is amazingly good. Add some new chatacters, some new stages but most important: good gamemodes. Adventure, Story, etc.
@Ryu_Niiyama Not sure if it was intentional, but your PFP makes this.
@Capt_N The music was from subspace emissary? Oh dang that's gotta be purposeful.
I'm seriously just considering ignoring Pokken Tournament for my future Switch until this rolls around. XD I'll likely be getting it unless it's a port of the Wii U version (kinda hope not).
@JoeDiddley I'mma call it right now. E3 is gonna have either Bayonetta 3 or Metroid Prime 4 gameplay. Maybe even both.
Words cannot describe my enthusiasm.
But numbers can. 1/10
It's also Rating Pending, if that means anything. Why on earth would a port be Rating Pending?
@thesilverbrick Just like Aonuma oversaw the development of the twilight princess HD remake made by tantalus while they were still working on Breath of the Wild
I'm going to be legitimately mad if there's no ARMS character.
Splatoon characters are an obvious fit to Smash! Everyone could see that coming. Here's another bet: Chances of someone from Arms appearing is 99.9%. The real question is... what third party characters will appear? Would be awesome to see something from Square Enix land.
@mikeatron85
Just because its this gen doesn't make it not a port. It's still ported over..
Perhaps Switch IS a port machine for now, but its only one year in and you can bet the big 3rd party companies are now paying attention to it. "If our port of Doom sells well, we're going to make something exclusive" etc etc
Not really too excited as it could just be a port of Smash 4, and to be honest I found Smash 4 to be stale as hell.
@JamesJose7 Sakurai made comments during the DLC’s development that he was relieved that he wasn’t developing anything big anymore and could take his time with the additional content. Smash 4’s development nearly killed him. You think he dived right back into an even larger and more daunting project right after that?
@wollywoo Cloud already represents Square Enix in Smash.
This is super exciting. I don’t care if it’s a port or new game - it’s finally got Inklings.
I see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Smash_Bros.#Playable_characters has already been updated with the Switch roster in the table... according to them JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis will make an appearance! (Click on the link to "Inklings"...) I am SO HYPE
@sauce @Natzore: Not sure of the music track, but I'm sure it could be found on Youtube.
God what a hot garbage from nintendo. Ports ports ports. Trying to give the 3ds a bit of life back when they going to snap its neck anyhow. And that splatoon garbage. Splatoon has many fans, but please leave such stuff out of a nintendo direct. Some people do not care about such games. And then finally after that whole silly intro of splatoon where those characters look like a crossbreed between a bratz doll and a persian cat.... just for one sec i was excited i thought well here it comes..... and they show smashbros crap? god on a wheel..... where is animal crossing? All forgotten? I like it to see people being excited for new announcements..... Happy though this was not the E3 news. Happy that there are many third parties who will release games of my taste. Nintendo gets so commercial with their titels the only things i like is mario kirby and animal crossing. The rest is “ok”
SEEMS LIKE SMASH 5 TO ME! THE OLD SITE IS GONE, AND WE CAN SEE BOTW LINK!
Super Smash Bros - Yeah, I'll finally dock my switch! and doesn't matter if its a port or not, ninty give me Mario Party and I will never dock it out!
@thesilverbrick Sakurai has been complaining since he resigned the company after kirby. We'll just have to see later this year, honestly I just care about having a smash bros on my Switch.
Game modes will make or break this more than newcomers. At least, that's how I'm looking at it. I want a single-player experience like Subspace Emissary.
Time to sell my Wii U!
I was shocked they never added the Inklings in to Smash 4 as a DLC character, this'll be nice.
@JamesJose7 l’m with you there. Whether it is a port or not, I am excited to play it. Honestly, a brand new installment would be a waste of time and money. The template that already exists for the last game is phenomenal. Just add a bunch of new content and go from there. If they start fresh, we are only destined to lose characters and stages. Either that, or we will have to pay for them all piecemeal as DLC later on.
@Mgene15 So any game that exists on another current gen platform will be considered a port in your eyes? Continuing to SMH 😂
I'm in the camp that this is a brand new entry of the Smash series and is Smash 6(By the way, Sakurai considers Smash 3DS "Smash 4" and the Wii U game "Smash 5" I'll dig up the interview when I have some time.
If this was just a dolled-up port with the Inklings added in, why not do the trailer in the style of Smash 4's newcomer trailers? Why not show gameplay?
I think this is Smash 6, and for all we know, there is some new gameplay mechanic that they do not want to show off yet.
If this is just another port, why not show off more?
One other thing, why is the website replaced with a link to Smash 3DS/Wii U's site on the bottom? If this is an enhanced port, why replace the website?
Hyrule Warriors has a link on the website for the Wii U version that openly states there is a Switch Port coming in 2018, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker's website has a notice that the game is coming to the Nintendo Switch and 3DS in 2018, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze also has a notice that its coming to the Switch in May of 2018.
So, why is Smash Bros the only one with a brand new website? All these other Wii U ports that are coming to the Switch all have their Wii U pages up, with a notice somewhere on the page that says its coming to the Switch.
Why? Because this is the real deal. This is the newest entry in the Smash Bros series.
@Nintendoforlife Put it up just for the direct lolol.
More than likely this is just a port of the Wii U and 3DS games combined together with some extra payed DLC stages and Characters. Either way I will still be skipping this game all together because I don't care for the Smash Bros games. What I want is a New 2D Mario Platformer for the Switch.
If it includes all the DLC I will definitely get it.
I'm thinking this isn't a port or an entirely "all new" game.
instead, I think it might use 4's engine (and probably an heap of its assets) but will be different (different roster and levels).
To cite an example from other publishers Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, Saint's Row IV
Another Wii U game with an extra character, maybe an extra level. Yay. 🙄
This is DEFINITELY Smash 4.
I haven't played the Wii U one, so I didn't know it was known as "Smash 4", and even so I read the burning cross (and later a thin crossed line in the title) during the Direct as a part of number 4 (the intersection of the lines in 4 makes a cross).
Having never played Wii U, this is gonna be a blast, especially with inklings added.
Definitely a fantastic reveal. Really made the realization of the inklings getting into smash like meeting the devil himself. One thing though, am I crazy or did Link have his Botw design in the trailer?
Wow, that was some intro. I'm hoping it's not just a port, although the Wii U game was awesome. Going to definitely put this on the buy list for now.
@Saego
EXACTLY!
@cosats dose pono hahahahaha
#TailsandKnucklesforSmash
Now we just need more information.
@ieatdragonz Really it's not that hard to just add a model/character so, no...
@sauce @Natzore: Sorry, my mistake. A few minutes ago, I checked the Direct on Youtube. The music sounds like Brawl Subspace Emissary music, but I don't know if it was. I apologize. Don't get too excited. Sorry.
Well, I'll be damned. This is definitely a good reveal. I'm definitely looking forward to the news of this game
It's too early to tell, but I think it's likely that this could be a new Smash game instead of a port. The logo is different compared to Wii U and 3DS, but this mean nothing if this does turn out to be a port.
@rjejr
It's a port when they take the assets and code the comprises the first game and just adjusts it to make it work on a new platform, that being the switch in this case.
If they bring features from both version of smash 4, then it's both games ported into one.
I personally prefer an enhanced port over a new game, so long as they add in significant content... by significant content, I mean more characters, more custom moves, more smash run initial stages, more smash run challenges, more levels, and subspace. I think that'd definitely be worth $60
@thesilverbrick "a brand new installment would be a waste of time and money."
"we will have to pay for them all piecemeal as DLC later on."
Bingo!! A DX port would mean everything included or else they would look bad. A new game means new DLC. And besides, they've already made their SSB4 money back just on amiibo alone, it was like $600 for the set. Plus those $20 adaptors. Plus the $100 of DLC. So yeah, a new game costs more to make then a port, but maybe merging Wii U and 3DS games was a problem, and porting both separately would be stupid.
So new game, even if it's mostly the old game with a lot taken out and some more added in. No Mii fighters or Miiverse level for starters. And Inkling are included, but Octogirl will be DLC next year. Maybe that Dark Souls amiibo guy. Who knows.
And maybe Sakurai didn't make this one? The blueprint is there. He's been making these games for years, must have mentored someone at HAL by now.
Wowwwwww hel yeah!
i want to see what bandai namco brought to the table!
Please let us see something.
Please don’t simply be a port.
Whatever it is, Melee fans will still shun it.
@pinta_vodki That's an interesting theory, but that circle with the intersections has been Smash's logo since the beginning. Sakurai said the cross represents the crossover between franchises, and the four sections represent four player gameplay.
Nothing I've seen from the teaser makes me believe this is anything other than a Smash U port or Smash 4.5. All DLC included plus some new content from games like Mario Oyssey and BotW. They'll just call it SSB for NS like they did for Wii U and 3DS.
Based on how long Smash U was supported via DLC into 2016, the average development cycle of the last two Smash games being six years, the average length of HD development in general, Sakurai being burnt out on making new games, and Nintendo's current track record of cashing in on U ports, I'm leaning more towards enhanced port then entirely new game. And you know what, I'm a-ok with that because Smash 4 was a great game and a port with all that expensive DLC included in one package at $59.99 would be a great value for those who never played the U version.
Never been into Smash but I thought the reveal was so well done...
I believe we're looking at another "Splatoon 2" instead of a "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe".
I want more characters (like inklings!) and some stages and all that. But what I want more than anything? WORKING ONLINE MODE! Cmon please give that to us Nintendo. Please revamp the ink out of it.
And if you could give some balance changes and all that, that'd be cool too.
@WiltonRoots I'm guessing we are waiting for the cumulative article before we play? Although the snippet articles have already covered more than half. I guess the next one should include a whole line with port-related stuff
@khaosklub Well I understand how it's supposed to work, I'm just saying not sure there's a true cut and dried line between the 2. Like when EA releases the same FIFA game 2 years in a row on Wii but gives it a different name.
https://www.wired.com/2012/10/fifa-13-wii/
Nintendo probably could get away with minor changes and simply call it SSB. Who's going to stop them?
Why does everyone want a port of Smash 4? I'd much prefer a new experience.
@sauce Oh, okay, didn't know that, haha. You can see that Smash is probably the only Ninty franchise that's largely passed me by because for some reason my friends were not that into it.
Let's hope it's a new one then!
@Scrummer
Because everyone loves smash 4 and wants more characters rather than messing with the formula and giving us another Brawl.
@gortsi Yeah we'll wait for the inevitable So What Did You Think Of The Direct? article. Based on the small articles they've already posted I've seen enough crying to fill 4 cards. In some cases one person could fill both cards single handed.
That will be yet another port with a little extra content and a £50 price tag.
@MarinaKat You have a good point, but here's what I don't understand. Nintendo is infamous for porting games from older systems to newer hardware, especially if the games in question were on hardware that did not do very well.
Nintendo has not hidden the fact that they are filling the Switch's schedule this year with ports of Wii U games. These games have been shown off with their new features hyped and its been made very clear that these are ports
If this is a port, why suddenly drop a trailer with the inklings(who are the top picks for newcomers in the next Smash Bros) and call it a day?
Why not show off gameplay? We just sat through a Nintendo Direct that saw Nintendo hyping numerous ports of Wii U games coming to the Switch. Nintendo hyped the hell out of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and showed it off when they ported it to the Switch.
Why be silent on a port of Smash for the Wii U/3DS if its just a deluxe version?
It makes no sense, and goes against everything that Nintendo has done with their other Wii U to Switch ports.
People know what Smash 4/5 is. There is not point in hiding it.
But if its a new Smash game, it makes sense to drop a short trailer, build insane hype, and then unleash a full look at the game during E3.
The thing with Smash is that this is not the first time Nintendo has randomly dropped a new Smash Game in passing. At E3 2012, Iwata randomly dropped that Smash was coming to the Wii U, even though development had not even started yet.
This is not a port. This is a new Smash game. I stand by my belief in that. If this is a simple port, why change the Website, why hype Link's BOTW look(Link only changes appearances in new Smash games), why not show off the game if it was yet another Wii U to Switch Port?
@khaosklub I don't want them to change the controls or anything, I just want new characters, and new stages. If adding that means 4 Deluxe, then that's fine by me.
@Scrummer
Yeah, but everyone expects the port to have that, particularly by combining WiiU, 3DS stages and adding new switch exclusive stages, like a splatoon stage or 2.
Oh, well...
I was quite disappointed by this Direction.
Still No announcement about Animal Crossing for Switch.
Better wait patiently on another Direct again or E3 2018.
@ParasolStars The development time has consistently been 2-3 years for a new Smash game. They're usually (not always - see 64->Melee) released six years apart because that's the typical lifespan of a Nintendo console. Actual development time, though, is comparable to other E-ticket games like Mario Odyssey.
@MarinaKat
To be fair, they could end up changing things up similar to how melee drastically altered the smash 64 system, and brawl drastically changed up the melee system. Brawl was just terrible, but many of the features it introduced remain in smash 4, like the air dodge and footstool.
They could always add more systems like how rage was added and such.
I personally prefer an enhanced port though, they could add a new mechanic to the smash 4 engine, and that'd probably be fine.
What people seem to not realize is that a port doesn't always have to be just a straight port. Saying "is it just a port" is silly because the Wii U version didn't have Inklings, therefore it's not a straight port.
However if the base of the game as portable from the start (which it was since it was the same game on Wii U and 3DS) then that means that it would have been written with the intent of moving the code base onto the Switch.
From that stand point this would be the version they'd always intended to have, whether or not you call it a port or not. My guess is that since people are whining about ports now they'll probably update a bunch of textures and models and redo the menus so that dumb people won't realize it shares a ton of code with Smash 4.
My guess is that this one will be a sequel in the same way that a lot of games like Halo or Call of Duty are sequels because they use the exact same engine but they include new content.
My guess is that this will include a lot of content. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe released with just a new battle mode. My guess is that given the extra time they've had on Smash they'll have several new characters, maps and hopefully some sort of story mode like Brawl had. They'd also have the benefit of tons of assets from BotW and Mario Odyssey so they might do something that feels like you're travelling through several Nintendo games. (Actually they'll have assets from Mario, Zelda, Splatoon, Arms, MK8, and several other big games that launched on the Wii U so they could probably make a really awesome story mode. Here's hoping!)
But either way, this is a system seller, so while it may have code that was intended to be portable, it won't be a straight port of the Wii U version. (It'll be what you would call a sequel, but it'll probably be more of a sequel like Splatoon 2 was)
I was in the boat that believed this to be Smash 4 Deluxe originally when it was announced about an hour ago, but after further inspection of the trailer, if you look in the bottom right corner at the end, it says Original Game, so I think there is a chance of this being Smash 5 somehow
@Hikingguy Few? Literally got 5 friends telling me they are getting a switch now because I told them this! XD
@thesilverbrick To be honest, if that port decide to bridge the content of the last generation's 3DS and Wii U version, it might as well be close to a new game.
I wouldn't even be surprised if it was revealed that us getting this in 2018 rather than 17 was because of the time needed to update 3DS' modes and assets as well as levels to WiiU/Switch standard.
I half-expect an Ice Climbers reveal just because of the 3DS was basically the only reason we didn't get them on Wii U since the 3DS couldn't handle the AI stuff that was required of the second Ice Climbers when playing.
So it will support our gamecube controllers again
HYPED!!!
Anyways, I think this will be a Smash 5 that's HEAVILY based on Smash 4. Essentially Smash 4 Deluxe: Deluxier Edition. There's just no way they're a building a completely new Smash from scratch.
Unpopular Opinion Warning
Please just keep Bayonetta out of it.
Give me a new game with a better roster, that digs deep in the Nintendo Roots and possibly revives old franchises, like it did to Fire Emblem.
I don't understand why everyone is so down on ports. They give you games to fill the release schedule, they don't take development time to produce (or they take minimal development time), and if enough people buy a given game from a given company it signals to that company that they should put their new stuff on the console. If you haven't already played a game, it's new to you, and if you have, it's not like you've lost anything by not buying it again (see: doesn't take up development time). Most consoles are filled with ports early on. It's the sign of a successful system. The more ports, the more better, economically speaking.
As for Smash, it's hard to tell if this is a port of Smash 4 or not. But given what a port of Smash 4 would really be (a little of this, a little of that, from Wii U and 3DS, but not this and not that, and perhaps modes left behind in Brawl/Melee that people wanted returned, plus new fighters given the Inklings and BotW Link) what constitutes a "port" of that game and what constitutes a whole new game anyway? Smash 4 was almost perfect, it would need very little tweaking to produce the best Smash game ever. They could release "Smash 4 Ultimate" (probably calling it Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo Switch to keep in line with the naming for 3DS/Wii U) and be done with it and it wouldn't feel like a port at all even if it technically is.
@ParasolStars The development cycle of Smash for the Wii U and 3DS was not six years. Sakurai did not even start on the game until he finished Kid Icarus Uprising which launched in 2012. Smash Bros for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS came out in 2014.
So, we can assume Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS both spent about 2-3 years in development.
Super Smash Bros launched in 1999 and Melee came out in late 2001 on brand new hardware. Again, a development cycle of about 2 years.
Melee to Brawl is the longest gap between entries in the series, but we know Brawl's development started at least in 2004 since a trailer was being shown off in 2005 and the game was pegged at one point to be a launch title for the Wii.
So, let's assume Brawl had a development cycle of 3-4 years.
My point is, people are assuming that the entire time between Smash games represents development time. It does not. Most of the Smash games have taken 2-3 years to make, with Brawl taking the longest time to develop between sequels.
Super Smash Bros was made in about a year.
Saying it takes Smash Bros six years to develop between games is like saying Street Fighter V took 8 years to develop since that was the gap between it and Street Fighter IV.
I do think it could be a new smash since HAL Laboratory is mentioned at the end of the trailer and they didnt work on smash 4
I definitely suspect it’s a port of the Wii U game, but happy dance indeed!
Well, Nintendo has their tent pole, system selling AAA game for the holiday season. This Direct was really well placed for Smash Bros. It confirms to the mass public the game is coming (hype), they now can have Smash be the featured game for E3 (lots of press) and then they can go into the holiday season with confidence of another wave of huge system sales. I actually really liked the Direct, probably an 8 or 8.5 out of 10 for me. The Smash reveal shows me year two is going to be an excellent year for Switch fans.
nice curveball
@thesilverbrick This just in, Devs can only work on one game at a time.
Did anyone else like Super Smash Bros. Brawl better than Super Smash Bros for Wii U? I liked it for the Story mode.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE and nobody really cares because it's smash
@BaffleBlend too soon? the game is 4 years old!
@Deva I've already mentioned elsewhere they own the copyright to the original Smash Bros. It's not saying that they're making this one.
@thesilverbrick I don’t know the answer for sure, but there is obviously the possibility that they have been developing a game before the release of a DLC character!?
Came back to commenting NintendoLife (it's been a busy month, y'all) just for this Direct.
One of the highlights of this Direct to me, the other being Crash.
I was shaking when I saw the "other announcement" was not about Splatoon... and had Inklings.
Then the logo came up in Inkling Girl's eye and I started to believe.
This is going to be a good year. Hoping for a "fusion" port of both versions of Sm4sh with all DLC because, frankly, what with Sakurai's tendinitis and how long it takes for a Smash game to come out, it can't be otherwise.
But Inklings and (obviously) Ice Climbers, so here's hoping.
Question is: Is this the third version of Smash 4, or are we looking at Smash 5? This trailer potentially hints at an all new game, but there's definitely not enough concrete evidence yet.
@jswhitfield8
Interesting...
I'm now convinced Smash Bros on Switch will be a sequel, with new characters, stages, game modes, features, etc, but the game will be built on the Smash Bros Wii U's engine and contain all/most of the content from Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS.
Think Splatoon 2 vs Splatoon 1.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Sakurai has confirmed on twitter, this is a new project he's been working on for a while, it's not a port.
@jswhitfield8
I hope not, because that crazy 3rd party roster should not go to waste.
I mean, Ryu, Bayonetta, Cloud, Pac-Man, Sonic, and Mega Man. When are we even going to see that happening again?
We knew it was coming anyway but my god I can't get over how epic this is!
I don't need to purchase Smash 4 a 3rd time if this is just an "enhanced port".
I had fun with Brawl, but frankly, when I played Smash 4, it just felt like I was playing Brawl again, and I've already played that game tons already. I want the game's mechanics to feel fresh in some way, and aren't interested in a game that plays like Brawl again.
@Superzone13
They were intentionally ambiguous on whether it was an enhanced Smash 4 port or Smash 5, leading most people to think it's a port.
So either it's a Smash 4 port, or Nintendo completely failed to clearly convey that it was supposed to be Smash 5.
@KingdomHeartsFan 3DS was the same way for the first year or so, since Switch is succeeding a complete failure and a handheld that sold okay, don't expect tons of new content until next year. I'm sure all of the Wii U amd 3DS ports bothered you when those systems were new, too...
@DarkKirby It's Smash 5, it even says "Original Game: Hall Lab." on the final screen. And as i've mentioned above, Sakurai has confirmed that this is a brand new project.
@Robsnow
Link please.
All consoles have ports, that is true. However Nintendo’s seems ridiculously high. Of all Nintendo retail/cartridge games, how many are ports? What percentage?
Smash games are very similar. Annual Racing games like F1 are. Sport games like a FIFA are. It’s the mechanics within the gameplay that changes slightly while everything else (like the same stadium and tracks) remain.
What I am trying to say is whether Smash is a port or new, it is the kind of game that it makes little difference, like F1.
Just give it a few tweaks, some new characters, some new fighting platforms and boom.
All Nintendo has to do is just change the backgrounds of the WiiU version, port it over and say it is a new game. Of course throw in some new characters and maybe add a story mode. That’s what they would with a port anyway.
@Robsnow
That doesn't really mean anything.
If there is any new content and they give it a new name they can justify calling it a "new" game.
The question people want to know is if it's going to mostly reuse assets from Smash 4 or not.
If this is a Smash 4 port, I am incredibly disappointed with Nintendo. Honestly, this could ruin the console for me. Lame.
@ballistic90 This just in: Sakurai was hospitalized due to his massive workload on Smash 4. You think he jumped right on a larger and more ambitious game immediately after that?
@JayJ: Assuming this is a port, it does not mean that the system will not have another Smash down the line. Nintendo has said they want to keep the NS alive(extend its lifespan) with peripherals. Assuming the NS goes for a long enough time, the system might just get another Smash. Same for Mario Kart, etc.
@Robsnow Nowhere does he say it's a new title. The Japanese Smash Bros. Twitter account doesn't say it's new either.
https://twitter.com/Sora_Sakurai/status/971885028245307392
https://twitter.com/SmashBrosJP/status/971879880081137665
It's not clear what that copyright at the end means. I read it as Nintendo and HAL Laboratory own the copyrights to the original game. If it was a new game I'm sure Nintendo would want to make that abundantly clear. Maybe it is, we'll get the answer very shortly.
Sorry if anyone else has mentioned this, but I just noticed that at the end of the Smash tease, in the copyright info, it says “original game” and on the Switch news tab it says Super Smash Bros (working title). Maybe I’m looking too much into it, but I’m starting to think it might actually be a new game. If it was a port, I’d think it would have a title, like Smash Bros Deluxe or something like that. We’ll see, but exciting nonetheless!
@faint
The PS4 does have a lot of ports, but it also has a lot of new titles, something the switch lacks
I'll buy this under one condition.Subspace Emissary 2!
So hyped. It also says "original game" meaning it may be a new entry, plus HAL Laboratory wasn't the developer of Smash 4
I'm presuming the Wii U version but with inklings, which should keep most Switch owners pretty pleased.
Heck, I don't care if its a port or a sequel, its Smash! 4 already had tons of content as to throw that away, and I barely played my Wii U version, so I'll acept anything. Time to trade Smash in!
I would guess that it's a new game, given the presentation and the little information that's been shared.
More Smash amiibo's, can't wait.
@thesilverbrick when the CEO of Nintendo leans on you and says thousands of peoples jobs are on the line "potentially", you might man up and knock out one more game regardless of your personal feelings. It's not about "you", it's about the company.
The copyright info says 2018 ORIGINAL GAME. What does that mean?
@Princessgina It might not be a port though. Also why not reverse and say they don't have to NOT show Splatoon 2 just because some people don't like it.
@MoonKnight7 I noticed too. Usually remakes and ports include the original year if I'm not mistaken.
@Capt_N Lame, this console is ruining it's momentum if they just port over Smash.
@Mgene15 Exactly. The PS4 is going to kill the Switch if Nintendo keeps up all this porting.
When the Inkling girl sees to the light, That, That LOGO in her eye's reflection said all!!, Smash for Switch!!
For me, I believe that will be update with new characters (well, inklings are the first ones) and the esceneries will be new mix the console and portable games, remembering that the esceneries of 3DS version were portable games and Wii U ones were console games; and very probably new 1 player modes.
Well, to wait, maybe in the E3 event more info.
@JayJ It definitely doesn't seem like a straight port. Otherwise they would've just called it Super Smash Bros for Switch. Also look at the textures on Link's Hair. The copyright info also points to a new title. I imagine they might uses Smash 4 as a base to make development easier, but it seems they want to treat this as a seperate title.
@Fazermint How do you know? I haven't seen anything mentioning port or even hinting such.
@NIN10DOXD Lets all hope so. I want some new experiences with this console.
I already got it for 3DS, but I'll go for this too when I get a Switch. Been waiting for this!
@Alikan What gave you the impression I think this is about me?
Everyone who gets upset about ports needs to get over it already. Even IF this is a Smash 4 port, all that means is that we're more likely to have an incredibly huge Smash roster and an even more refined game than we would have if this was a new title.
If this is a port, 60+ characters are basically guaranteed.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
I'm hoping for a port with all my soul.
2018 is really heating up, all these switch titles. I gotta stack my paper, and get ready to smash!
@thesilverbrick general you. Not you. 😮
@NIN10DOXD
Yeah that’s what I think too. At first I thought port, but seeing the copyright stuff makes me think it’s new. Really fast development if that’s true, probably reused a lot from the Wii U game, not that that’s a bad thing.
What a time to be alive
Predictions/Wishlist:
1.) Spring Man - With ARMS already having a rather cult following, myself included, bringing it's arguably most iconic character would be fantastic (especially with a Springtron costume swap). (This isn't very likely...but I want Lola Pop for Smash. She's the best character.)
2.) Subspace/other campaign - Brawl was my first Smash game, and the campaign was one of my favorite parts. It's half fan service, half obscure game promotion, and all kinds of fun to be had. I'm a sucker for a good crossover.
3.) Waluigi (playable) - Waluigi is such an underrated character. Give him a moveset based off of all the spin-off titles he's been in (trust me, there's enough to do so) and wham- instant character.
4.) Inklings - Inklings are such great charact-- hold up, never mind.
5.) Chibi-Robo - After bolstering his ability set with Zip-Lash, Nintendo could easily bring in Chibi-Robo as a fantastic fighter, plus, it'd help to revitalize his series.
@Alikan Gotcha.
Wow 260 comments! Idk man smash Bros series never ever grabbed my interest....
Should be a very popular title. Still not interested. I might try Arms some day, however.
@james_squared @joey302: No shame there. Everybody has different tastes in games. I have a friend who once told me he wasn't into Smash, like I was. I hope you guys find something you like on Switch, or 3DS.
This is Great! If they include story I would if you classic mode of player any character each would have there own ending much like the Street Fighter II character endings.
Just give me Spring Man from Arms as a playable fighter. I need him in amiibo form.
@thesilverbrick Logic may dictate that, but there's evidence for both sides so.. right now it's all speculation.
Well, that Direct was freaking HYPE! Pre-ordered this immediately. And what's crazy is this gets a March announcement. I know I probably shouldn't set myself up like this but I'm starting to think E3 is going to be insane.
@Mgene15 how old is the ps4? How old is the switch?
Never surprised this ended up on Switch, we knew it was inevitable. What surprises me is people saying it looks like it could be an all new game not a port. From this teaser? Because they've added two new characters? Let's look at the facts.
It's far too soon for them to have developed an entirely new game. They were working on DLC characters for the last couple of years. They've ported almost every best selling game with the exception of Splatoon (come on, it's nowhere near as big a task to develop from scratch). They ported Mario Kart (a first!) and added new characters while doing so, and I believe they've added new characters to both Hyrule Warriors ports. Just because it has new characters doesn't mean it's a new game. People have pointed out the logo is slightly different. Come on, that's hardly enough to suggest an all new title. It's a port with a fresh logo and new characters and stages to give people a reason to update. Besides all this, Sakurai himself said he didn't want to do another Smash. The guy burns himself out when making a new Smash, you really think he would do it again so soon, in this time frame? You really think someone else has taken the helm for such a massive project that is coming out so quickly?
If it is a new game, great. But I just don't see it. I hope it is, because I played the last one on both consoles so I don't need to play it again. At the moment it's safe to assume it's a port, it'll lessen the disappointment when it's revealed to be. If you expect a new game, chances are you'll be disappointed so keep your expectations in check, folks.
I think we can all agree in general whether it's a port or a true sequel, its a win win.
If I had to speculate based on the various theories, I'd say it might be built from Smash Wii U to speed up development rather than from the ground up. So I guess there would be some debate on whether that constitutes a true sequel or a highly enhanced port
I might be the only person on this site who really doesn't like Smash. I have tried them all since the GameCube one, online and offline, but never saw what people enjoyed so much. I won my first online match simply by mashing buttons. It just feels slippery and imprecise and the camera is too cluttered and zoomed out for my aging eyes. And single player is not good.
definitely gonna be E3's highlight. dont expect much other than smash and stuff from last year...
It’ll be a port ... just with new characters, settings, animation, models, textures, sound, gameplay, and a new engine ... other than that, it’s a port
I think it will be an enhanced port like mariokart 8, maybe with some extras hopefully. I have no problem with that, just make sure the online works and I will play it more than I did on the Wii U!
ofc its an enchanted port guys....And there's nothing wrong with that unless you already bought the game on Wii U
I
Reading some of these comments is truly awful. Yeah, I'm not personally interested . But people who go on threads like this to regurgitate the word "port" every time are pathetic.
@Baker1000
Could be a port, but I’m leaning on a new game based not on the logo, but the copyright info which says “original game.” Also consider that the Switch news tab says “Super Smash Bros (working title).” If it was a port, I don’t think it would have a working title. I don’t ever recall seeing “Mario Kart (working title),” when the Deluxe was coming to Switch.
Like you said, it’s best not to get overhyped, then disappointed, but those are two pretty interesting bits of info that lean on the new game side.
I feel like it won't be a port.... Because Sakuri makes games that will last many years after the system is dated. I feel that he isn't the port type. Smash was one of the best selling games on the Wii U, even if it wasn't much, so I have no doubt that they will make a new game here.
And I do hope they get help from Bandi Namco so that it can be like Smash 4, the balanced part at least and have more pee to help make the game great!
I honestly thought it was a port of Splatoon 1 at first, and was so confused. Then I saw the Smash logo and started grinning like an idiot.
10^10000000000000000 of 10
Smash 4 laid such a great foundation(a lot better than Melee IMO) so I wouldn't mind if they built off that. They should add Smash Run from the 3DS version or another single player mode. And of course some new characters and stages, etc which is obviously happening.
We really need to drop this "ports/deluxe editions are bad" mantra. Especially considering a lot of the same people who beat that drum apparently have zero problem with ports and deluxe editions on other platforms.
@Caryslan I think the fact that they used the Smash 4 logo is a pretty good giveaway that this isn't an entirely new game.
Just please put bomberman in this time. Or a chocobo. Eh, both.
This reminds me when everyone thought Splatoon on Switch would be Splatoon 1.5 due to all the supposed rumors and leaks. Then January 2017 rolled around, and we ended up with Splatoon 2 instead.
In other words, don't let leaks and rumors lead you astray.
Not all sequels and followups are going to shake up the series formula and direction like Zelda Breath of the Wild.
This is gonna be one of Nintendo's best years.
@MoonKnight7 Well Melee was pretty quick too and the team wasn't nearly as big as Smash 4 had. I'm definitely curious who is handling this project regardless. It says HAL, but I'm sure this is a collaboration.
This is interesting, but I've lost more and more interest in the series since I've gone more towards single player games (and I don't have anyone I can play with anyway. Nevermind trying to play online with my laggy connection). I will be interested to see what other new content they add though. And maybe there will be enough single player content this time around to convince me otherwise.
Best character/port reveal ever. Only Nintendo would be able to make people excited for a port with enhance new features.
I'm not gonna bother reading all these comments rn but if it's a new game I will laugh at the naysayers.
I’m betting it’s a new game but built off of Smash Wii U engine. Nintendo is acting differently about this one vs the ports.
I’d personally like to see Tom Nook, Chibi Robo, Funky/Cranky/Dixie Kong, or King K. Rool.
@Danpal65 Back to HAL again? Oh yeah boooi!
@faint
In the ps4's first year it didn't have 11 ports.. and 2 new games.. what I'm getting at is the library is majority ports,2d indies and maybe what 2 games that are strictly switch games? .. the PS4 in its first year had majority PS4 or this gen games.. it wasn't til year 2 and 3 we saw ports for PS4 but by then they had a lot of PS4 this gen games to balance out.. with switch there's not much balance... I love my switch I'm just pointing out facts.
@Mgene15 the ps4 launched with five ports. If you take away the cross gen titles the number gets even smaller. I have a ps4 you know. You can’t lie to me on this one.
As much as I love Splatoon I would really love to see some ARMS characters in Smash.
@JimmySpades Good thing they didn't use the Smash 4 logo then.
NEW SMASH FOR SWITCH! 100% CONFIRMED ! Oh yes , hype hype hype hype hype .
@faint
That's great that you have a PS4. I don't care. The PS4 launched with ports, had more nin ports than ports. They were PS4 graphics, not straight ports. Only black ops was literally not upgraded. The ratio of ports to non ports year one is what I'm pointing out. No lies, the truth.
Haven't really played a smash game since melee, i guess fighting games aren't my cup of tea anymore. DragonBall FighterZ is fantastic, but then again I mostly play local and not online, and it's freakin DBZ.
@thesilverbrick
Smash 4 came out four years ago and it took about two years to develop Smash 4 sooo...yeah not really,
@Pikachupwnage Smash 4’s development didn’t finish until 2016 when Bayonetta was added to the game. And seeing as Smash 4 hospitalized Sakurai, I doubt he immediately jumped into developing a larger and more ambitious game immediately after that.
@Mgene15
Ports or Not, Who cares ??
Just play it on Nintendo Switch.
My logic:
1. Who makes a CGI trailer for a port?
2. Nintendo up to this point has been very straightforward about their port announcements.
3. They can always reuse Smash 4's engine to speed up development.
It's probably a new game. IMO
I am very excited ,bit what are ee getting. As it was just announced as smash brothers. Not the usual deluxe tag added for ports. Still please Nintendo do some new challenger trailers until it release
@PuzzleMaster7
Think your likely right. Still it what I wss expecting anyway.
Had an inkling.
I feel that, if it were a port, they would have clarified that in the Direct, so there's a chance that this could be a new Smash game.
@Mgene15 are you saying 2018 is over? Also they were still ports.
@Mgene15 It is more like the WiiU is dead so let's use some Switch voodoo to resurrect some of its best games so that more people can play them.
I got a feeling this will be an enhanced port of Smash Wii U. Which would still be a good thing as long as the graphical upgrades are noticeable and lots of additional content. (Regardless Awesome Trailer)
I think a Tekken character should be added this time around. Especially if Bandai Namco is involved again. Like Kazuya Mishima with a devil mode. Hell, they earned it imo.
@Mgene15
The Switch has more new games in its first year than PS4 did. The latter was getting criticised for a long time for a library that was PS3 games with slightly better graphics. PS4's biggest early games were TLOU remastered and GTA V. PS4 has a great exclusives library now but it didn't in 2013 and 2014.

SSB for 2018, as I figured. Now the wait for more details..
I will always wish for you joining the roster, Professor Layton...
If you look at one one of the ink blobs on the ground it clearly looks like Ridley.
Hopefully this is a new entry and not a Wii U port. Either way I hope there is a 1 player campaign like the sub space emissary from Brawl. On the Wii U entry, playing the same game modes over and over to unlock everything became a chore. Having a solo campaign would keep things interesting.
No way it’s a port. It’s being developed by Hal Laboratories and it’s copyright is 2018. If it were a port the original release date of 2014 would be there. They are deliberately hiding characters and showing that green tunic Link is no more. The logo is different and they gave it a CG trailer rather than show any gameplay.
@Anti-Matter something with whining about unrealistic expectations, you're at fault
@Saego
Whining what ?
Unrealistic what ?
Can't i express my little disappointment about Nintendo Direct this morning ?
I still keep patient for upcoming Nintendo Direct.
@Robsnow @NateM94 @Moonknight7 Original Game has to do with the trademark for the first Smash game, made by HAL. They show that in every smash trailer.
@Anti-Matter 'I'm dissapointed because they didn't announce Animal Crossing.' Whining and unrealistic, yeah. You, my man, had too much hype.
Never been a big Smash Bros fan, a Mario Maker port would be great though with improved online support 😊
Never owned Wii U. Port or new game, all the same to me. Day one purchase. Loved the teaser trailer.
@Saego
I kept my expectation Low.
I felt quite disappointed still no Animal Crossing for Switch announcement.
But, i DIDN'T Overexpressed my disapointment.
I know i disatisfied with this morning Nintendo Direct but i keep Positive, someday that game will be announced.
Could you please not bothering me ?
You cannot deny it:
Nintendo got style.
Control + F: "Daisy"
No results. LET HER SHINE IN SMASH!
Was hoping for a Wolfenstein 2 release date unrealistic? Because I was kinda disappointed in that regard.
@Giygas_95 I'm surprised about that too. Maybe they have trouble porting it, or they didn't want to announce it yet. Who knows.
@Anti-Matter If you were hoping for an animal crossing game, fine. But don't be dissapointing when you've gotn yourself to blame. You expected something with a very low chance of happening at this moment.
@Saego If we don't hear about it at E3 then I'd say it's probably in trouble. With the incredible lightning and shadows in that game, I wouldn't be surprised if they're having trouble getting it on Switch.
I'm VERY excited for Luigi's Mansion and Dillon's Dead Heat Breakers though!
@Saego
I blamed who ??
I just expressed my little disappointment but i didn't blame someone, is it forbidden for me to say my little disappointment ?
Please, don't start an argument here.
@BaffleBlend too soon? Most games get a sequel sooner than every 4 years
Port or not, I've no other machine to play Smash on, so I'll probably be getting this.
@sauce I thought it represented a window?

Put paper mario in it
@SLIGEACH_EIRE while they didn't say it was a new version of the game, they also didn't say it was a port. They would have said deluxe or something like they did with other ports they have done so far. It is possible the tweet was taken down or something since I have heard multiple people, that I trust, state sakurai confirmed it was a new project.
Raise your hand if you think the upcoming Fire Emblem main character will be included, bringing the FE pool to SEVEN. (I'd kill for Alm/Celica, though.)
I would have been more surprised if there wasn't going to be a Smash Bros. Cant remember a Nintendo console since the 64 that didn't have this game. I enjoy it for what it is - more of a casual party game. Would appreciate a real fighter.
Whilst I agree it could be a new one. Nintendo are very aware of how many Switch owners have not played Wii U so they have a lot of games to port (Mario kart, DK, Captain Toad, etc).
I haven’t enjoyed a Smash as much as Melee since Melee. But I am hype.
@TheSmashBro69 DEFINITELY not just you...
This is great news as Nintendo has a holiday Smash (pun intended) even though I couldn't care less about it (I have all the Wii U ports to play anyway...). As they considered a deluxe version of the new remixed port of Wii U and 3ds hirule warriors I am leaning to say this is a sequel in the terms of splatoon 2 (uses the same engine but they will add new arenas and single player mode.
Lastly I would say this means no Pokemon this year (probably Pokemon 2019 and metroid 2020)
I know they did the same thing with Metroid Prime 4 but I think a title with no gameplay footage is a slightly shoddy way to announce a game. The lack of game footage leads me to conclude that this might be a new game but that's probably just wishful thinking.
@thesilverbrick I don't think it'd be more ambitious. If Smash 4 took two years to develop (not counting DLC) while developing for two platforms and trying to get things to match as much as possible as far the core gameplay/balancing goes while making a lot of things from scratch, then a Smash 5 on only one platform that can reuse assets from Smash 4 (including a modified engine) shouldn't be quite as demanding (not to say that it isn't demanding, just that the work done on Smash 4 and only having one platform to develop for should speed up the process)
They wouldn't have to rebuild veteran characters from scratch again unless they're updating their designs or changing their movesets (Link, possibly Mario).
6.
Well, I'd like to know if it's a deluxe edition or a new entry. It has been announced so late that I don't know what it is.
@Chozo85 It's just a teaser trailer. Standard procedure of building up hype.
Smash is a service game, just like Mario Kart. People complained about that, and look how it is selling.
They can upgrade the control system for the controllers, this will have portable 2 player games, LAN modes, lots of networking support.
Then they can upgrade the levels and characters - textures and models. Add new characters. And new stages. DLC, chat via the mobile apps.
What else do people want? What is the point of rewriting the entire engine?
This is all about content - and the best way to have lots of new content, is for the smash Switch release and for it to sell a lot.
I'm actually disappointed, with all that fire in the beginning I thought it'd be the Diablo 3 reveal.

@BaffleBlend It will be 4 years since the last Smash when this game comes out. Smash 64 and Melee were less than 3 years apart (2 years and 10 months).
On the other hand, yeah, building on Smash 4 would make all the sense. It has a great engine and an awesome roster, as well as some stellar stages. If they give up everything the Wii U version had, add some stuff from the 3DS version (like Smash Run, and some stages including Magicant and Tortimer Island), and add like 5 new characters and stages for them (aside from an Inkling, somebody from ARMS would make a ton of sense, as well as the return of the Ice Climbers, and a few more surprises), and maybe some new modes (like something of an Adventure mode), it will be absolutely great.
I can even live without some stuff we had in the Wii U version as well. Like Smash Tour or 8-Player Smash (which is not likely, but it can take those enormous stages with it as well), and surely some of the trophies can be replaced.
I do worry about its file size. As we know, Brawl was an absolutely massive game for the Wii, and Smash 4 was filled with content on the Wii U, and they don't like to put too much stuff on Switch carts, sadly. Then again, Smash 3DS had quite some stuff in it too.
I'm pretty sure the reason it says Original Game: Hal Laboratory is because they have the copyright for Super Smash Bros. (because of the N64 game)
Why else would it say original game??
Why is there even a buzz about a port?
This reveal has absolutely awesome. I wasn't expecting a new Smash but it very much looks like that's what we're getting.
I've never owned or really played Smash. This could be the one I buy.
@link12684 There was no such phantom Tweet. Sakurai's not an idiot. Nintendo have been very deliberate and vague in any information they've put out about the game. No word of new, port or Deluxe version. Just simply Smash Bros. is coming to Switch.
FIngers crossed this isn't a port of the Wii U one and if it is that they'll clean the roster up a bit by getting rid of all the useless characters like Dr Mario, Dark Pit, Cloud, Lucina, Robin, That last Fire Emblem guy and Shulk.
plus bring back transformations for Samus and Zelda, have Wolf and Ice Climbers back have either a Melee style adventure mode or a proper sequel to the Brawl story and also add characters that people actually want like K Rool, Shovel Knight and Rayman, plus maybe a real character creator/customizer with proper alternate costumes for all character plus some better original stages, now that IMO would be the real 4th Super Smash Bros game not that overhyped mess that was on Wii U
This is at the end of the credits of the Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS reveal trailer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvudMu-5kIU
Now this is what's at the end of the Switch Smash Bros. trailer.
How I possibly read this is that it's an updated port of the Wii U/3DS game. Nintendo and HAL Laboratory made the original game but only Nintendo and not HAL Laboratory are working on this upgraded port. If you pay attention to gaming, you would have heard Sakurai recently talking about doing consultancy work, I think that's what he may be doing on this project and he was talking about Smash Bros. in this interview.
"…Well for me, every time I always think, “This might be the last one.” If it’s a request from a client then I’ll consider it, but I do wonder, “Is it alright if I’m not the director?” It might be good to take on more of a consulting role."

https://sourcegaming.info/2018/02/07/18755/
Nintendo wouldn't say at the end of the trailer in tiny writing that this is an "original game".
@SLIGEACH_EIRE It's at the end of every Sm4sh trailer.
@Mart1ndo Because lots of people didn't own a Wii U. That aside, lot's of new games coming to the Switch.
@Saego I wasn't finished writing. Now what do you say?
@Razzy It's a subtle hint at Diablo in Smash. As well as Inklings in Heroes of the Storm and a bunch of Nintendo-themed special lootboxes for Overwatch.
If Toad is not a playable character in this I'm calling it now: DOOMED
@LUIGITORNADO No - you’re seeing something that isn’t there! Those ink blobs actually look like Shrek fighting Goku if you squint hard enough.
What that means I don’t know...
Especially when you know how Smash 4 was so big and asked for so much work, you know that it's Impossible to have a new Smash game that soon, but people hype themselves when it could just be a great definitive edition with tons of new content ...
"original game" means nothing, it's just because the name "Super Smash Bros." is owned by HAL, the Link's botw skin means also absolutely nothing, and the trailer with the Inklings just show that they'll add new content
Don't hype yourselves for nothing, it could be one or the other, but there's way more chances to have a definitive edition with way more content than a Smash 5
Already people are saying it a port?? There is nothing to suggest it is or isn’t a port (as far as I can tell) from this trailer. If they showed of more, we will know but simply saying it’s a port from this alone. Port or not I will be getting this when it’s out and the Inklings are a solid fit into the game!
Even if it is a port, is that really a bad thing? It was a huge hit on the Wii U and it would sell so well on the Switch! If there is GC controller support then even better! But in all this is definitely a solid announcement and people have wanted this since Smash 4! Now because people are assuming it’s a port it’s dampened the hype? I understand ports can be annoying but I understand why there are ports and it’s not always a bad thing. I can’t wait to play at the Inklings in the new Smash! So very excited!
So there will be a lot of original content it seems regardless. I say that’s a win! Call me a traditionalist but I would love a new 2d platform game...or they could just port Sparkster over to Switch 😋
I find the idea of it being a port ridiculous. Because if it's a port, why tease it?
A teaser is supposed to excite you for the full reveal (probably at E3). If the full reveal is just the last game with some extras... why not just show that in the first place? I cannot even begin to believe for a second it's not a whole new Smash.
The last game came out 4 years ago. That's plenty of time to start building a new one. The last one was made in just over 2 years, on two platforms.
Nintendo.
I need to buy food.
Also, I REALLY don’t want it to be a port. Why? Because I want much more new stages and characters.
@KingdomHeartsFan well, waiting on 3DS was the smart thing to do if ports bother you, so I obviously can't fault you there. And I also generally play other games (on other systems) if nothing I want is coming to Switch. So, yeah, I guess I misread your tone.
@thesilverbrick I was actually with you until seeing the direct - now I'm not so sure it will be an enhanced port. I wouldn't be surprised if it still was, but I think I am learning towards new game for a couple reasons now.
1. Even if this isn't just an enhanced port, they could still re-use a lot of the same assets from the Wii U game. That would save a ton of development time and allow them to get it out the door quicker.
2. No footage of the game was shown. If it was to be an enhanced port, I think they would have made it a little more clear. They don't really stand to gain anything by shrouding the reveal in mystery, only to disappoint by having it be a port.
3. The name of the game was simply "Super Smash Bros." with no subtitle. I think they would have simply named it Super Smash Bros for Nintendo Switch. Nintendo's website also has it listed as a working title.
We'll see. I won't be too upset either way, honestly. It would be nice to have a brand new game though.
Haha, of course there's already over 300 comments here, nearly 400. OF COURSE. It's the announcement of a Smash Brothers game! The hype is real guys. I'm really excited for this one as well, although I'm admittedly kind of worried for some of the playable characters from Smash 4, most notably the third party characters of course. I really hope they won't cut Mega Man, he especially feels right at home in this series! AND INKLINGS ARE IN, YES!!!
Am I the only one who doesn't want it to be a new game?! I loved Smash 4, it had an amazing roster that I wouldn't want to see reduced, fantastic stages, and perfect gameplay. Between the two versions it was packed full of content it would be a waste to start all over again.
An enhanced port with all the previous characters and new additions, new skins, and combined stages of 3DS and WiiU. Add in a couple more modes (Smash Run HD and maybe a single player campaign) and you've got one of the best games ever made.
I ve never been into smash bros (and never will be). But this reveal gave me goosebumps.
@Anti-Matter
I don't mind people complaining about ports, I actually can understand why but we don't know much about the new Smash and people are stating it's a port as a fact! That is what irritates me about the whole "Smash is a port".
I am eager to know if it really will be a port or if it is a new game altogether though and I really want to try the inklings out. No doubt they will add more variety to an already large roster of characters!
Still going I see.
This thread needs more breakdown on what qualifies as a port or a new game.
Most obvious - if Nintendo calls a port of "Spaltoon" "Splatoon 2" does that make it a port? I know it wasn't a port, lots of new stuff, but if they called "Spaltoon 2" "Spaltoon Deluxe" was anybody going to argue about it?
So, if they call it simply "Super Smash Bros", which they could, this argument might never end, will it? What's in a name.
If it's just about the engine, it's probably Wii U based.
I'm pretty sure "Super Mario Galaxy 2" used the "Super Mario Galaxy" engine, was "Super Mario Galaxy 2" a port of "Super Mario Galaxy" from the Wii to the Wii? So I think it takes more than just reusing an engine to decide if a game is a port or not.
Is Majora's Mask a port of Ocarina of Time? (That's a rhetorical question, please don't say yes.)
"By re-using the game engine and graphics from Ocarina of Time, a smaller team required only one year to finish Majora's Mask."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Zelda:_Majora%27s_Mask
So there goes the "it's a port b/c it's using the same game engine" argument flying right out the window, done and dead.
So content, obviously.
SSB4U had some interesting features.
Play next to amiibo. I think amiibo are done for this game. Dropping the "play next to amiibo" feature would alone almost make it a new game. But no word on amiibo yet. But does anybody think they will relaunch and resell all of them? So to me amiibo is a big part of "port or new game".
8 player. I think 8 player is out, it was a gimmick, and nobody wants to play 8 player in tabletop mode on the Switch tablet. Nobody.
Mii's. Those stupid Mii fighters and their 35 cent DLC costumes. All gone.
Miiverse. That Miiverse level is gone, obvs.
Other stuff to cut.
Way way way too many sword fighters, we call it Super Sword Bros in our house. Some of them have to go.
Where's nearly complete Pikmin 4? Might be time for Olimar to go.
New stuff.
Bayonetta is main game, not DLC. Whoever co-stars in the new game B3 will be DLC, that guy or the girl or the kid.
Mario Odessey hat. That may be a new Mario all together, that hat has uses, circle throw, jumping on it to recover, possessing people. Can a SSB game have 2 Mario's? Maybe drop Dr. Mario, but I want to play as a hat based character. And a New Donk City level, obvs.
Inklings. Well yeah. Octoling will be paid DLC next year. Will get a level. Maybe 2.
BotW. New Link, new level, probably 1 of the 160 shrines, they all look the same anyway.
ARMS. I don't know the game that well but a character, maybe 2, and a level. And a DLC character next year.
1 2 Switch level. Maybe a hodgepodge morphing level.
Funky Kong will be DLC. Tropical Freeze level.
So there's a lot to cut, and a lot to add, and a lot to remain the same. Sounds like a new game, on an old engine, to me, as new as Melee to the first, Brawl to Melee and 4 to Brawl.
But I'd really like to hear about the amiibo, that was such a big part of marketing the first game, if they cut those, it just isn't a port at all.
@Saego
It never said "original game" in the Wii U/3DS reveal from E3 2013. Be that as it may, if that is true (not saying it isn't), how do you explain the Switch news tab saying "Super Smash Bros. (working title)"? If it was a port, it would have a name. I don't recall ever seeing "Mario Kart (working title)" when Mario Kart 8 got ported to Switch.
Hey, maybe we're both right that it's sort of a half step and reusing a lot of Wii U assets and they're billing it as a new game, but I don't think it's just a straight port with just a handful of new characters.
@Kimyonaakuma Haha, wouldn't that suck!
@Capt_N Ah, darn!
@pinta_vodki I hope it is too! I never noticed the logo looking like a 4 before to be honest haha! But I think it's because I started playing when I was like... 10 or 11 years old? I just sort of associate Smash with the logo.
@TommyTLG Huh, I never saw that before. Guess it's possible! Sakurai could be pulling a George Lucas on us
@thesilverbrick I'm almost certain it's not a port of Smash 4. Nintendo wouldn't have a pending title and a new logo for a mere port to the Switch, which they could've easily just called 'Smash Bros for the Switch'. At the end, of the video, and the website, it says 'original game' and that HAL is part of it, and Bandai Namco isn't mentioned. I also don't think they would have such a vague teaser if it were a pre-existing game. But what do I know? It might be a remake of Melee for all I know.
@rjejr: "1 2 Switch level. Maybe a hodgepodge morphing level."
@Princessgina Splatoon is extremely popular, as it should be. Why the heck would they leave it out of a direct? Animal Crossing probably doesn’t appeal to everyone either, should they leave that out of any future directs? Can’t have it both ways.
It feels like I've been waiting forever for this game.. so happiiiiiiiiii ahhhhhhhh
@Capt_N I'm no expert on SSB stages, but here's one thing I just remembered this game really needs. And I mean really really REALLY needs, whether it's a port, blend, or some combination thereof. What it NEEDS are mutha@#$%%$ individual save points. We own SSB4U, and I've never played it, b/c stupid dumb Nintnedo, even though my kids and I each have our own accounts and only play on those accounts, blended the saves, ACROSS ACCOUNTS. So the very first time I played, about a week after we had the game, my kids had unlocked every character and done many of the challenges. And that was all in my very first time starting the game. That's ridiculous. Why have separate accounts if we are all going to share 1 save file? So before we buy this version, I need to know that's been sorted out.
@khaosklub "more characters, more custom moves, more smash run initial stages, more smash run challenges, more levels, and subspace. I think that'd definitely be worth $60"
Well considering the first $60 game had over $100 worth of DLC, if they added all of that, plus a Subspace Emissary sequel, we're talking like $200, not $60, for a port.
And to me that's why they market this as a new game, even if it's built on the last one, so they can start over w/ 40 or so characters and sell another half dozen as DLC. If they port the complete last game for $60 and add in even more new stuff, well who needs more than that?
So while people may view it as a port, Ntinedo won't, and they'll cut out enough and add in just enough to make it qualify as new.
See post #384 above where I go into more detail on some of my ideas on that.
@rjejr: That's a really good point. Account merger would be an an excellent option to have. The account themselves, could be merged, or individual save files, from different account. If Nintendo did this, I would prefer it be a system function, rather than part of the individual game programs. That would make it work for all games.
@Capt_N "Account merger"
No, no no, you have it all wrong and mostly backwards. I don't want to merge my accounts, I want to start a game on my account and not have it be already finished, like it was with SSB4U. And from what I've read some people had the same problem w/ NSMBU. Or maybe it was SM3DW, I forget.
I mean options are always good, I like options, but what I need is to have my own unadulterated save file. We can work on merging them all later, but I want the sanctity of my save file to be first and foremost on the Switch. Which I suppose I could just go check w/ some of our other games, but we only have a couple, and I know for a fact SMO is fine. If that wasn't fine the switch would have been returned, I would have lost my mind.
Sorry 'bout the rant, wasn't directed at you, just bringing back up some bad feelings.
@rjejr: Hey, it's cool! No problem. I hope you enjoyed your lunch.
Just commenting so we hit the #400 comment mark. Congrats everyone!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE https://nintendoeverything.com/sakurai-confirms-hes-working-on-the-newest-smash-bros/
here is a link that shows his tweet if you haven’t seen it yet by any chance
Am I the only person in the world who has no idea about SSB? Never played it, never even seen it. I'm happy as from the comments, it looks like I have an unexpected AAA release to look forward to
@3dg3d3m0n you’re in for a treat. It’s one of the best multiplayer games. Nintendo has proven to have the best local multiplayer games- from Mario Party to Mario Kart to SSB
@thesilverbrick Most of their games up to this point have been ports(mk8, captain toad, donkey kong country, hyrule warriors, etc.) so it's likely this will be a new game. also, botw and SMOdyssey were released very close together, since they have separate dev teams. Smash has its own dev teem as well, so they could probably handle it. Also, there would most likely be backlash if it was a port.
First Year PS4 Exlcusives (NOT PC ports, which discounts flower/final fantasy 14, etc)
Killzone
Knack
Infamous Second Sun
The Last of Us
Hohokum
Infamous first flight
Driveclub
Switch:
Snipperclips
1-2 Switch
Breath of the wild
Mario Odyssey
Arms
Splatoon 2
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Mario + Rabbids
I love my PS4, but my Switch had a much better first year in terms of exclusives.
Subspace Emissary 2 anyone?
@Joshua_Zarate They're the same character
@Joshua_Zarate But focusing on one part of my thing shows that you yourself are the ignorant one
1 million!!!!
Ah, the good old days when we didn't know that literally every fighter in Smash history was in the roster. Good times.
