E3 is right around the corner and Nintendo is already preparing to bring the big guns out in June to keep viewers around the world - and attendees in Los Angeles - engaged and having fun. As with recent years, Nintendo will focus its E3 activities on games that are coming out in the immediate future, with a special spotlight given to a key headlining title: the recently announced Super Smash Bros. for Switch. Games launching beyond 2018 will be featured at a later date.
The festivities kick off with two days of high-level competitive action. Night owls across Europe can watch qualifying international teams – including the reigning European champions from Germany – ink their way to glory in the semi-finals of the Splatoon 2 World Championship tournament, from Monday 11th June at 23.30 (UK time) / Tuesday 12th June at 00.30 CEST until 02.00 (UK time) / 03.00 CEST. The finals will take place on Tuesday 12th June, immediately followed by the Super Smash Bros. Invitational 2018 tournament, which will pit invited players against each other in Super Smash Bros.
All the action from both days will be streamed live on Nintendo of Europe's E3 2018 website, and on YouTube with a chatroom available in viewers’ local language.
At 17.00 (UK time) / 18.00 CEST on Tuesday 12th June, Nintendo will debut a video presentation featuring games releasing in 2018. Right after the presentation, Nintendo Treehouse: Live | E3 2018 will begin three days of live gameplay, appearances by developers and an insider look at games, starting with the upcoming Super Smash Bros title.
From 12th to 14th June, visitors to Nintendo’s booth at the Los Angeles Convention Center will be able to play a variety of games, including Super Smash Bros. Additionally, some of the most noteworthy upcoming third-party games on Nintendo Switch will be featured across several Nintendo activities throughout E3 week.

It will be interesting to see how Nintendo is pushing their competitive scenes. I can't wait to see the Splatoon tournament.
I hope the new Smash Bros has some new game modes including a single player / co-op campaign like Brawl. Playing through the Wii U game became a bit of chore, going through the same modes over and over with different characters to unlock trophies etc.
Looking forward to what the new entry has to offer.
Don't care about Splatoon, BUT BRING ON SUPER SMASH!!
Please, make it so you only have bare amount of characters to start with and unlock them by doing something like the story mode from the Wii version
‘Recently announced Super Smash Bros. game.’
You teases. Still nothing on whether it’s 5 or 4.5. This is Sakurai-level trolling, appropriately enough.
Personally I hope they announce a new character for Smash between each round
All I want to see is Xenosaga Trilogy HD. Its time.
Not too interested in Smash so I hope it doesn’t take up too much of the Nintendo e3 effort. Although for me its usually just the E3 Direct that matters.
I couldn't care less about Smash Bros, so I hope Nintendo have something else to offer along the way.
Oh, please.
Animal Crossing for Switch !!
And Re:Legend for Indie section !
@QwertyQwerty The only 1st party titles that are confirmed for the latter half of the year are Yosho and Smash Bros, I think. I can’t imagine it won’t be good.
Smash and Tennis are the two games I'm least interested in from Nintendo. I hope there's a couple other surprises.
All aboard the hype train!
@roboshort
Following Mario Tennis Aces and Captain Toad in the summer, I believe Smash Bros, Yoshi and Fire Emblem are all confirmed for the latter half of the year, and possibly Pokémon (we shall see).
So we'll get a proper, thorough reveal of Smash Bros 5, a full, proper reveal of Fire Emblem, a new Yoshi trailer, and a few surprise announcements. Maybe Pokémon with holiday release, maybe Mario Maker 2, maybe Animal Crossing... guess we'll find out soon enough!
Very excited for E3 this year! Bring it Nintendo!
"At 17.00 (UK time) / 18.00 CEST on Tuesday 12th June, Nintendo will debut a video presentation featuring games releasing in 2018"
Always lead with this @Dazza always lead with this. It's the #1 thing everybody always wants to knows about at E3, when is the presentation.
Oh sure, tournaments are good, and SSB is huge, but day, date and time for the presentation is always #1.
2PM for me, going on my calendar now. And 2PM is weird, pretty sure it's been noon the past few years. That only gives them a few hours after for Treehouse. Oh well, what's a couple of hours?
Edit - Apologies to Dazza, I'm a dumba$$ who can't do time math in the morning, certainly not using military time, it is at noon as it always is, have no frikkin idea where I got 2 from, moron. (I took away 5 from 7 to get 2 smh)
@JaxonH You left out a Pikmin 4 announcement for a release next spring. You're the only guy I know keeping my Pikmin 4 hopes alive.
I hope Nintendo integrate LABO Robot kit with Smash Bros. Control your characters and fight with the robot kit... it will be more entertaining to watch people fight this way than mashing buttons.
"Get a look at Nintendo Switch games for 2018"
"Three days of Switch games"
Can we maybe stop complaining about the 3DS now? No? OK...
On a more serious note, I would speculate, but, I have a good feeling they will have a good number of surprises. I think either way, I will come out of E3 as a happy camper.
That said, the one thing a Guarantee we'll see at E3 is Retro. If not, I think it'll be time to start being concerned.
@rjejr
The dream is alive and well. This was confirmed e3 2017. Take a look...
https://www.polygon.com/e3/2017/6/14/15804766/pikmin-4-update
I'll be so disappointed if they did a BotW typed thing for Smash and barely showcased anything else. Sure Smash will be great but it's not liek there'll be a lot to show off.
GIVE ME METROID!
Isnt there two Splatoon 2 tournaments on the 11th with one starting at 6:30pm PT?
@Balladeer If the way Smash was revealed wasn't enough to convince you it's a brand new game, surely the fact it's being given the spotlight at E3 is enough.
Looking forward to Smash footage and lots of maybes. Hope to see Pokemon Switch, Bayonetta 3, Mario Party, 2D Mario, top down Zelda, Skyward Sword HD, new 2D Donkey Kong, F-Zero, Starfox, Punchout, Star Tropics, Waverace, Animal Crossing, Spyro port, and maybe something online free games related.
Anyone else notice how 3DS isn't a focus for their E3 plans? I think that speaks volumes for their actual 3DS plans, and not Kimishima's statement on the device.
@JaxonH I know it's alive, I've posted that link a few times myself. "Well" isn't how I would describe a game that was "very close to completion" 3 years ago in July 2015.
3 years mean it's taking them a long time to remove all of the Gamepad support from this Wii U game and still make it functional and enjoyable on 1 screen Switch. They made it work for Zelda ok, but maybe Pikmin had a lot of dual screen stuff going on they're having a hard time adjusting. So alive, but not well. And still no official announcement. Pokemon, Metroid Peime 4, SSB, all official announcements. Not well.
@JaxonH I forgot about Toad. Probably cause I beat it on the WiiU. Great game, but I don’t think I’ll get it again. I’m excited to see what Fire Emblem is gonna look like.. though this year, I might mostly be getting 3rd party games.
@rjejr
You know how Miamoto is with his baby. Pikmin 3 took 9 years from Pikmin 2 release. Its been 5 years since Pikmin 3 release. I think Pikmin 4 was migrated over to Switch, and I think they're holding it back to give it a better chance of success after the install base has grown, because Miamoto wants Pikmin to increase in popularity.
Year 1 release on Wii U really limited Pikmin 3's reach. I think a fall 2018 release for Pikmin 4 is very reasonable and possible. Switch will be at 25 million units by Sept-Oct... that's 6x the install base of Wii U when Pikmin 3 released. Or they might slot it in for spring 2019 if the lineup is already filled out for the 2nd half of this year (If it's Smash, Yoshi, Fire Emblem, Pokemon and Mario Maker 2 there'll be little room for Pikmin). But slotting it in where Kirby Star Allies was this year, or even Mario Tennis Aces, could be a good place to slide it in.
@roboshort
Yes, Fire Emblem will be epic. I never got too far in Captain Toad, so it'll be pretty new for me, especially with added stages. A perfect puzzle game for portable play.
And yes, lots of great 3rd party games I'm looking forward to. Octopath Traveller, The World Ends With You, Dark Souls Remastered, Blazblue Crosstag Battle, SNK Heroines, Valkyria Chronicles 4, Y's VIII, Dragon Quest Builders 2, Wolfenstein 2, No More Heroes TSA, Little Dragon's Cafe, Pillars of Eternity 2, Shining Resonance, Victor Vran, V-Rally 4...
Hopefully even more to be announced at e3 and late summer/early fall Direct.
My 2 wishes for Smash is a second Metroid representative (Dark Samus or Ridley) and an original Ganondorf.
I really hate clone Ganondorf.
But I hate the fact there's only one Metroid fighter more.
@Jack_Goetz Same here never really cared for Smash Bros. Wish Nintendo would release that Splatoon 2 Octo DLC as a Stand Alone game like they did with New Super Luigi U. Then it would be a day one pickup for me.
As one who doesn't care much for Smash, I hope it doesn't dominate the bulk of the conference...bleh.
There they go again. The whiners and the complainers. Soon on June 12 you will see and hear what they show in the direct. If you are not happy after that, then complain and whine. Nintendo is very serious and optimistic about 2018. Just wait and see.
@Anti-Matter I NEED Animal Crossing on Switch. HD graphics like amiibo Festival's and new features to make the game fresh. 250+ hours on New Leaf
@ImprobableToast I thought the tournament was for the WiiU version before they show off the new one in the video and/or the Treehouse? Or have you heard it is the tournament with the new game?
@Dazza you may want to add to the article regarding the Splatoon 2 semifinals times, the official site lists two separate streams for Semifinals:
June 11
3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. PT
6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. ET
I'll have to go on media blackout right before the presentation starts until I get off work that evening; there's no way that I'll be able to fit the entire thing into my lunch period. XD
I find it pretty odd that they haven't once said whether this game is a full on new release, (which common sense suggests that is unlikely) or a remastered version of the Wii U game with some extra characters and stages. If it was a new game I feel like they would have had no reason not to come out and say it.
@JaxonH I woud'nt mind if they'd slot it fall, winter, or spring, just offcially announc eit already. Yoshi had a triler hwo long ago now? It was about 2 1/2 years between the time they first showed the Yoshi Wooly Wordl triale runtil teh time it released. So I'd just like them to show what they have which has been nearly complete for 2 years.
I know games take a long time to make these days, but when a guy making the game says it's "nearly complete" it shouldn't take 2 years after that before they show it.
I do think you are right about slotting it in, but still, they've shown games before, like SFZ, Zelda BOTW and Yoshy WW years, YEARS, before they released. I just want to see a trailer, that's all.
What’s wrong with your writers? Obviously they are going “big” they’re having a friggin invitational for the game
@Dpishere It's the opposite of what you say actually. If it was a port/enhanced port, there is no reason they couldn't just come out and say it. Meanwhile if it is a new game, the vague teaser of it from the previous Direct makes so much more sense. At this point, they've really mislead us if it is a port/enhanced port.
@Harmonie Maybe, there is a part of me that thinks they are afraid to come out and admit that it is a port because it would not generate near as much hype as a brand new game. That probably isn't the case but the pessimitic side of me is viewing things that way. Still on a personal note if it includes enough new content I couldn't care either way.
I miss Nintendo doing a real press conference. For me, part of the fun was listening to the audience reaction. These videos don't have the same "hyped up wow" factor that the press conferences had. Even the Wii U got some good reception at its E3 presentation (which, coincidentally, might carry the blame for why they don't do news conferences anymore).
@Dpishere I mean there has actually been a lot of hype for a Super Smash Bros 4 port. It makes absolutely no sense to me, but that hype was so prevalent that we're now looking a trailer that would have under any other circumstance never even in the most remote corners been taken as anything other than a new game and questioning whether it is a port or not (sorry for that horrible sentence, I hope it makes sense what I meant lol).
Even if Nintendo wanted to be somewhat subtle about this reveal, if it was really to be a port, there are so many signs they could have (moreover SHOULD have) thrown at us, like opening up the teaser with the Smash cross logo from SSB4 trailers, using the same logo (the logo shown at the end is actually a little different from SSB4's), and/or crediting Bandai Namco (because lets be honest, if this is a port, then Bandai Namco HAS to be credited right off the bat).
@Harmonie I really hope you are right, you have me being really optimistic about this. Playing a completely brand new smash game this year would be a dream come true!
I refuse to be excited until it's confirmed to be a new game and not a port with squids
@gb_nes_gamer Th sad thing about that game is there weren’t even that many characters to unlock either. Most of the roster is either unlocked at the start or DLC.
@Kai_ I thought they said it was a new game at the investors meeting.
Something tells me there won't be much on Metroid Prime 4 at this E3. Knowing Nintendo, they'll want to keep some things in store for later, they'll feel confident enough that Smash Bros alone can carry them through E3 and come out as victors. I think they should go all out and unleash all they have to smash the competition out of the water, that's what I'd like... but I don't expect them to. That way I'll be happily surprised if they do, and won't be disappointed if they don't.
@BensonUii it will be a looong time before something like Smash is cheap. Years. It ias a longer tail than just about any other game, if not the longest.
@NewAdvent where have you read that Smash will be the “big” thing at e3 this year?
@FTL No I just assumed that they would show off a full reveal trailer for the new Smash and a handful of new characters/modes then put a demo version out to tournament entrants. I guess I got mixed up with Smash 4 (something of a problem with not having a sub title)
@rjejr I think the reason we haven't seen "almost finished" Pikmin 4 in three years is because 1) they didn't want to release it to a dying system, which is fair, sad but fair and 2) the Switch has had so much coming out for it that they haven't had a place to put it yet. Nintendo has had at least two if not three years to remove the dual screen controls from the game so the only reason I can see for them holding it back is they want to focus on other things. Mario, Zelda, Kirby, Xenoblade, third parties, etc. Whenever we see Pikmin 4 announced we'll know it was because there was a gap in the release schedule they couldn't fill with something else. Nintendoomed!
@NewAdvent Hmm, I went back and looked at the headline and the article again and I didn’t see that.
it is the biggest already known game. Do you mind cutting and pasting the part about it being the “big thing” at E3?
Booth decoration doesn’t equate to “big thing.”
For instance, last year was decorated with Odyssee, but wasn’t Metroid the “big thing” announced last year? Not to mention many other big announcements?
Isn’t the expected “big thing” this year at least rumored to be Pokemon 8th gen and/or Metroid gameplay?
I think you can stop worrying and just enjoy. There will be something big so they can sell the 20 million Switches this year. It doesn’t rest solely on Smash. No one is deluded enough to think that.
Smash bores the life out of me, When will something come out for me this year? :/
@NIN10DOXD yeah it helps to have an interesting mode that gets you playing because there’s many things to unlock as you go. It’s always an epic moment when you suddenly get the silhouette ‘challenger approaching’ screen.
Seeing as the last 2 E3 presentations only had one big game (zelda, and last year Mario) I suspect that Super smash is their big title this year. No Retro, no Metroid. People may have been right after all: Metroid won't be released before the end of 2019.
Super Smash may be fun, but that's definitely not enough for me. I need at least one big single-player thing. Something great. And if Super smash turns out to be a souped up Smash 4, in my opinion Nintendo immediately has lost the E3. Needless to say I feel lukewarm about the upcoming E3!
@BensonUii tbh i think alot of people got 4 so early was possibly due to mewtwo and the cd music track for getting both so early.
"It’s always an epic moment when you suddenly get the silhouette ‘challenger approaching’ screen"
I totally agree! I want to work for my roster, unlocking them in different ways. But the modern "thing" seems to be that the whole roster is available from the start. I bet that also will happen with Smash Switch, sadly.
My wallet is ready
@TheLobster I'm not worried about Nintendoomed, I'm worried about Pikmindoomed.
They showed Yoshi at E3 last year. Still no release date. They've told us OFFICIALLY about both a new Pokemon game and shown a logo for Metroid Prime 4. MP4 doesn't even have a release year yet. Why not at least a Pikmin 4 logo? Doesn't make sense for a game that was almost complete years ago. Well unless you're Square Enix.
This will be my first Smash Bros. Game! Could anyone compare the gameplay to anything else?
@BensonUii i want your local super market to be where i live.
@Cyberdyne84 if you have a ps4 the mechanics are similar to brawlhalla. Not the same but similar. I think smash was a first of it’s kind but there has been close copies.
@rjejr Luckily I think by the end of the year (if not at E3 then in a September/October Direct) Pikmin will make an appearance for Spring/Summer 2019. It just makes sense!
I'm excited to see what Smash Bros. looks like, but I also really hope Nintendo has at least 2 new games announcements. I want Animal Crossing and an old-school Paper Mario game like the first two (a remake would be fine). Oh, and a Mario Party like the N64 and GameCube titles would be nice. And more on Metroid and Pokemon would be nice too... damn, my hopes are too high!
@TheLobster "by the end of the year"
I've been having the Pikmin 4 "next time" conversation w/ Jaxon for I think 2 years now. Next Nintneod Direct. Next E3. Sure, at some point a new Pikmin game is probably going to come out. But the longer ti takes, the more in my head Hey! Pikmin was Pikmin 4 and the next one will be Pikmin 5. It's always "next..." with this one.
Nintendo is making the Switch reveal trailer a reality
@rjejr But they've said Hey! Pikmin was not Pikmin 4 so there's always that!
@TheLobster Yeah they say a lot of things, all of the "theys", I just find it easier not to believe any of them.
@rjejr Haha, I guess it's better to expect nothing and not be disappointed when they announce Nintendogs + Cats + Birds instead of Pikmin 4. (The gimmick is the Switch wakes up in the middle of the night and starts shrieking and you can't get it to shut up! It'll sell millions! Millions I tells ya!)
At least we know it's basically Smash 5 confirmed now. I mean why would they focus their E3 on a port?
Now all I need is to get some more details on this new Pokémon game.
Surely I can't be the only person who hates this franchise, I know it sells really well due to all the characters but it plays like a dead budgie!
If Nintendo are spending so much time on Smash Bros, it has to be a new game. Why would they spend so much time on a port?
@Anti-Matter Based on the previous 3 Animal Crossing release dates, there's a pretty good chance we could see a Switch one this year, or at the very least revealed. Wild World & New Leaf launched a year after the DS & 3DS respectively, and City Folk released only 2 years after the launch of the Wii.
@gb_nes_gamer This - all of this. I absolutely loved Brawl's Subspace campaign, and was really bummed out they canned the idea for Smash 4. I'm also hoping they keep the Smash Run & Smash Tour game modes. While I didn't think they were great, they already have the framework for both, and more game modes are always welcome.
The first half of this year has been surprisingly devoid of big titles for the Switch. Let's hope the latter half contains more interesting stuff to capitalize on the consoles succesful launch.
@TheLobster "Nintendogs + Cats + Birds"
Close, but more like a 3-pack of Toy-con "Labo Doghouse", "Labo Cat Scratching Post" and "Labo Bird bath". They could sign a deal w/ the Charles Schultz estate and get Snoopy and Woodstock in there.
Smash and Splatoon don't do it for me, but Nintendo always has a few good surprises.
(Well, apart from that one year with amiibo Festival and Star Fox, But we won't mention that.)
@rjejr Haha, I've never seen that particular cartoon! Nice! I do bet licensed Labo are coming.
@TheLobster "licensed Labo"
Labo Scooby Doo Mystery Machine van w/ flip up side panel w/ point and click adventures on the Switch inside. And little cardboard Scooby snacks you scan w/ the Joycon camera to feed to Scooby Doo. hee hee hee
@rjejr As long as we are going all Lego Dimensions on this (Labo Dimensions?), how about a Labo Portal gun?
hmmm....my local GAMESTOP has SUPER SMASH release date 12/31/2018...
...i would have figured it would be released after NOV, early DEC
