Could tell exactly from that video, but it looks like the Switch version is hitting pretty close to 60fps. That's way more important that high res textures and lighting effects for a platformer. Looks like they made decent compromises to deliver on the Switch.
Don't immediately dismiss Skirmish vs AI. As with most RTS games, it's a good way to learn the nuances of each map and practice some build orders and combinations of units. German mortar has a little longer range than US, so it's good to know where on the maps to setup to be most effect, or how to counter if there's good cover. I mean, this is really true of any RTS, but I found it more so for CoH and I keep coming back to it far more than any other RTS. If there was a remaster of Total Annihilation, that might be another game I would return to. But, it might not age nearly as well as CoH has. I played a ton when CoH was originally released as part of Games for Windows. Too bad all the ranking stuff was lost when they changed serves.
Almost wants me to shout out "Shut up and take my money!" Uh, except he's already got it from different platform purchases. LOL. As long as he's being diligent to ensure there are no new bugs, I'm fine with him going slow on this. The hype thought? THE HYPE!
I assume they were trying to get this game out way earlier. Leaning hard into Kingdoms, Stranger Things and even a bit of Gigapocalypse for good measure. Not sure I want that game though.
Almost a foregone conclusion that it's Knight giving them fits. Plenty of history to know how that port went. I'm sure they're reviewing all those notes to ensure the performance is there. The other two shouldn't have too many surprises for performance. They've been ported several times already so there should be ample notes on where the trouble spots are. Totally fine with the delay. I've got these on PC anyways. But, having Kevin Conroy on the go is a treat not to be missed.
Oh, that reminds me. Worked with a sr manager type before my short stint in gaming. He always mused about setting up a QA company that was able to do highly detailed QA with a dedicated team. It always sounded good, but in hindsight after working in the biz, I realized it wasn't practical. There's little incentive to hire a dedicated company like that which would have to charge a premium for the scale of testing he talked about. His main angle was a series of test bed not unlike what you see some of the tech youtubers like LTT and GN are trying to do for their hardware & GPU reviews, but he wanted to target games specifically. You all know where the market went. Lowest cost provider that was able to do "good enough" as measured by some bean counter, not the studio head or the producer on the game.
There are different approaches to QA. A skilled QA team can really help the dev team pinpoint where bugs are happening, especially when the QA team can fully replicate it consistently. But, that's a more expense resource than just getting people in off the street to basically mass playtest a game. In this kind of situation at best you might have QA Manager that understands how to do QA and will do what they can to push the team to that level of performance. But, it's also unskilled labor so that manager is constantly balancing how to get the project done w/o having to burn themselves out by trying to train someone who's going to be gone at the end of the project. I've seen both. I'd go with a smaller QA team that really knows what their doing, and I've heard from the dev team they prefer that as well vs trying to solve against the law of numbers.
There is definitely a need for these more arcade style racers. The first one is ok. Not great. It's not quite a modern take on the Rush series like I want.
But, really, we all want a reboot of Wave Race or Hydro Thunder.
@Stamina_Wheel The gaming industry is completely hit driven, not unlike movies. This is why they like contractors instead of employees. Project is done, contractors roll off. Too many misses or fluctuations and you have to lay off employees to offset. It's one of the reasons I left the gaming industry and don't care to go back.
You'd hope allllll of this would really challenge Marvelous and Natsume to really start to bring their A game. The last releases were not up to the same bar that Stardew Valley set so many years ago. And, NOW we're getting more content, and late-game stuff? whoa
My girls have the mobile version. I believe it has several IAP items. No mention in the article of the Switch version will have DLC instead or if everything is included.
I need to follow this closer. I thought the rumors about MS buying Sega were probably credible, or at least that MS was seriously considering and probably even in talks with Sega. When Sega divested their arcade division that kind of felt like a move that would be needed to close a sale; thinking MS wouldn't want to take on that kind of business. Sega's IP and maybe some tech would be a great acquisition target. I keep thinking Sega isn't doing enough with it's arcade IP back catalog.
The oddest thing about the trailer is how the game animation is so much smoother than the tv show. I think if they had used an FPS closer to TV it might give it more of a feel like you're part of the show. But, that's probably counter intuitive.
Honestly not sure if my kids would want to play this. They still watch the show even though they've kind of grown past the intended target demo. Maybe there will be a demo at launch and we can see if they might actually enjoy the game.
Really looking forward to this. I never got to play III, so this would be a great way to enjoy the game. LOVE the visuals of the teaser. Just amazing art direction here. I think I prefer this direction to the FF VII remake treatment where the game is completely different and just the bones of the story remain. This HD-2D treatment feels like it's more earnest and respective to the original. Then again, I haven't played more than the demo to VII remake.
Well, the most obvious is Simpsons followed by X-Men. Until just recently, I would have said GI Joe would also deserve to be on the list, but that just got announced and appears to get a TMNT-like treatment. Though, the combat looks kind blah and not much personality from what I saw in the gameplay.
What else should get a multiple-player beat 'em up? Maybe DuckTales? You'd be able to use the art style from the OG series and the newer series. Plenty of characters to use as players, different personalities, combo possibilities, ultimates, etc. Endless number of baddies for them to take down too.
A FAR out of left-field might be Macross or Robotech Gen 1. Rick, Ben, Max, Roy, Miriya in their respective mechs. DLC for other mechs that protected the SDF1. Probably doesn't work quite as well as maybe DuckTales though.
There are plenty of posts of people using original 360 game pads without drift. Far fewer reports of people having drift on old controllers vs Switch ones. I'm sure materials have changed since in the name of lowering mfr costs. Gotta save that penny!
Sure, this new patent may provide a fix, but I assume that liquid is going to prove proprietary if not prone to leaking. We'll have the state of CA require 10'x10' warning labels screaming about how it will cause cancer, and you have to wash your hands after 2-5min of constant use.
Gotta take this with a grain of salt. Considering how old the Maxwell architecture was when the Switch was announced/released, it's not hard to imagine a SoC based on Ampere would be impressive. But, these early tech demos aren't always an accurate reflection of what we get in gameplay. Still, if basic raytracing at 60fps with DLSS 3.1 is possible that would be a huge boost from where we are today.
I think the bigger point will be backwards compatible, and especially scaling for current game. If a simple patch will get OG Switch launch titles to run at 60fps, that would be a huge win. Oh, and Nintendo, please, please, please work on that WiFi speed. It's easy to guess these newer games are going to be larger downloads. It would be great to get better download speed from your eShop.
I was all set to be excited by this until I saw the video. Did Zynga make this game? It looks almost like a game based on flash. I assume they made the choice to keep the animation frames the same as the original. I was expecting the animation to look smoother, but even the art is just so bleh. What a shame. This series deserves a better game.
@EaglyBird You made a valid point that ESA is not just about E3. I remember they were quite active defending video games back when Mortal Kombat was in the news, and just video games in general when the media wasn't another sensational story to carry on about. ZOMG games are going to melt kids brains, just like Elvis did with his gyrating hips, and comic books were going to corrupt our brains and how too much TV was going to turn us all int... oh wait that one came true.
While I completely agree he needs to take the time it'll take for a quality game, I do feel maybe he shouldn't have announced HC so early. Yes, it's exciting, but the lag time in between even details doesn't seem to serve a real purpose. A publisher might do this to string hype along and make sure they maximize marketing dollars for a big launch. But, that's not happening here.
Anyways, hopefully the update isn't taking so much time away from HC. Hopefully he's at least got some help with like QA. I understand why he might not want to bring in too much help, but there are common tasks that should be fine to get with help that wouldn't take away from his guiding hand.
TL;DR: "If you suffer from a ‘2D looks old’ disposition then it’s simply not for you."
Perfect summation! I still need to pick this up, but I'm waiting for my birthday. Love the idea of it, even if it's niche and even if the collection is shallow. It was such a key point in video game history, and it's great to explore it in a nice package.
CoH is an awesome game. Is still play skirmish mode even today. 2 wasn't nearly as good. It has a number of issues. I wanted 3 to be a return to form, but I'm glad I waited to see what the reviews say and I've still held off. Maybe I'll grab it during the winter sale.
I'm real curious to see how the controls map to console. Given what they did for CoH3 it should be possible with a touch of creative license. This is an old Dx9 game so should be able to run well on Switch. They might have to tone back some of the alpha channel stuff and the particle system to avoid heavy frame drops, but that shouldn't be so bad.
Hope this turns out well. I'm not sure if I'd pick it up on Switch since I have nearly 1k hours played on Steam. BUT, it's a superb game to be sure.
Took a few views of the trailer to really put my finger on it, but I got it now. The art direction isn't close enough for me to the 80s animated series. It just lacks some personality. The TMNT game from Dotemu was able to capture it in the sprites, but this is missing the mark. And, my 80s brain just couldn't grasp the trailer not having the icon opening music - but, I assume licensing wasn't going to let that happen. I guess the game isn't necessarily based on the series either.
But, we really need to talk about the gameplay. It's so stiff looking. The moves don't look inspired either. I don't think I saw much in the way of a combo system. It looked like hit boxes weren't where you'd think they should be either. There were other things I saw, but other posts have already echoed about the gameplay just doesn't look appealing.
Do I want a GI Joe game? Yes! But, this might not be the game I'm looking for. Although, it totally, completely makes me wish they would do a polished OVA either in movie form or short series. Renegades didn't quite scratch the itch for me.
Backed the kickstarter on this. Only got to play for 35min or so this morning, but so far I'm loving the vibe here. The art is just gorgeous. I want to just look at ever area and take it all in. So many little details. Similar with the music. Only heard a few tracks, but they're perfect for where they fit in the game. I'm already familiar with the combat from the kickstarter beta, so I know that's good. Very much looking forward to spending more time with the game.
Also, very happy they designed the game to play as either character as the lead. If my daughters want to play they'll enjoy being able to pick Valere.
That was great. Very much captured the feel of 80s dark phantasy. Recognized almost every clip. The high concept for this would have worked well in that 80s era. Probably not as much today.
Honestly, I'd have a hard time to narrow down what a good Zelda movie would be. Switch games kind of changed my POV on what a good Zelda game is vs earlier games. Really, a Hollywood movie would have to be Yet Another Origin Story (YAOS) to get started. I expect that would upset a lot of long time fans vs telling some kind of broader tale or a completely new story.
@Poodlestargenerica Dotemu is considered an indie developer. They were even highlighted in the Indie World showcase back in 2019: https://youtu.be/67P8PDCV82M?t=131
@xmkbest I've had this discussion in other forums. It's like there are tiers of indie now. Like, "technically" Streets of Rage 4 is an indie title, but let's be honest, it's not "indie" at all. There's like this other tier of indie where it's not released through a big publisher, or maybe not using publisher funds, but does have a publisher and get the advantage of a lot of polish. Not sure what to call that. If EA is AAA gaming, maybe this tier of indie is AA? IDK. I kinda see this game in that category like with my SoR4 example.
Kinda wish I hadn't watched the trailer. I backed the kickstarter and played some of the beta. Has real potential to be a great game. But, OH MAN, spoilers on the big boss guys. I wasn't expecting that. I love the idea of a real 16-bit style with modern tech that says a dev doesn't have to worry about sprite size, how big a character can be, how detailed things are, or having to weigh custom animation to highlight something due to space (time and money will always be a consideration though). Can't wait to get my code!
@XiaoShao I would assume no. When these kinds of projects start they're pretty set in what they want to do. It's a function of ROI for development investment, so if there wasn't much QoL in the first, there isn't likely to be much in the 2nd. The only time it changes if one game of a set is a standout title; think FF VI and how it got extra love from the Pixel Remaster series.
Honest question, does Furturama appeal to Millennials and Gen Z? I would have thought it's more of a Gen X thing; which would translate into a smaller audience appeal.
Think 2 of my daughters would enjoy this, but if they would have added the ability to play as a girl it would have been a sure purchase. I assume for a game like this, gender isn't key to the story, just a cosmetic thing they could even patch in.
You know who's going to make a killing with this? Anker. All they have to do is product a generic battery spec that doesn't suck; not top-tier, just not suck. They already have the brand recognition for power/battery. Find a decent supplier, slap their brand on it, BANG probably tipple their business.
@Magician That Fist of the North Star game (Last Battle in the US) was so odd when I first ran into it before I knew about the series. After learning more about the series and then game again I'm shocked it actually made it to the west. That had to have been some deft dog 'n pony show presentation to get it approved. It had little chance to sell well since the West wasn't familiar with the IP. Didn't help that it wasn't really a great game either. But, I still had some fun with it.
Never got to play this when it first came out. Looking at the video, looks like it could be a fun romp even if it's not top tier quality. I loved the series. It did so many new things for an animated series in the US; not unlike Batman TAS.
Maybe get Dotemu to consider a modern sequel to some of these like they did with SoR 4. As much as I wanted to love the new TMNT game, it was fun, but for some reason it didn't live up to the bar that SoR4 set.
I'm forever stuck on World Warrior (SNES). It's what I played countless hours of. Shortly after I kind of moved on in life and never played the follow-on games. When I tried to pickup turbo, the timings for various moves, bound boxes and timings were all different. There was lots of common reference points, but everything was just off enough to have to invest time to relearn parts of the game if I wanted to regain mastery. I just didn't have the time. Too bad too, because playing some of the bosses wouldn't have been awesome. Life, unfortunately, sometimes just has to march on. SF 6? Ya, I need to get into that. Looks like a great time to step back into SF. Maybe for Christmas.
This brings back memories from the 360 days. But, sadly, this never did scratch the Marble Madness itch I've had for a long, long time. At this point, I'm not even sure if it's possible since it's so hard to pin down what the itch actually is. But, that's probably just me. I think my kids would like this on Switch. Hope there's a demo for them to try.
Followed this since it was announced. I'm a bigger fan of the older games. This game is really only a Settlers game in name only. They really pushed the IP to the RTS side vs what you might calla real time supply chain game (it's always been a bit of a mixed genre). Basically the long time fans aren't happy with this game. The dev team fully ignored feedback. They built the game they wanted vs the kind of game that long time fans wanted. It really feels like this should have just been a new IP with the change in focus of what the game ended up being. Newer players that aren't as familiar with the old games may have a different POV, and honestly those are probably who Ubisoft is targeting. If this ends up on deep sale I may try to pick it up. But, off-the-cuff, this is not a Settlers game I'm interested it.
I would pay $20-30 for an HD-2D remake without even thinking about it. I'd have a lot of reservations about going full rebirth though. The remake of 7 was a different game even if the story was mostly similar. One huge thing for me will be the music. Kefka's Domain was the first game music I ever bought. I've listened to that so, so, so many times. It's as iconic as the game itself. I'm open to some kind of enhancement, but they really have to be respectful of the original.
Pretty much means the publishing license is expiring. As mentioned above, games most people have heard of and had poor reviews. Which also means this was a click bait article meant to pad an article quota.
Like the new art direction and mechanics shown here. Looks like a solid title. I'm kind of surprised the release date is after the holidays though. That's curious. Is it a smaller game and they want to avoid the bigger AAA releases? Most gaming budgets are spent by then; except for like gift card money.

Do I want a GI Joe game? Yes! But, this might not be the game I'm looking for. Although, it totally, completely makes me wish they would do a polished OVA either in movie form or short series. Renegades didn't quite scratch the itch for me.
Re: Retro-Inspired Indie Sea Of Stars Sold 100,000 Copies On Its First Day
Backed the kickstarter on this.
Re: Random: Fan-Made 'The Legend Of Zelda' Movie Trailer Shows What Will Never Be
That was great.
Re: Retro RPG 'Sea Of Stars' Approaches Release With Another Stunning Trailer
@Poodlestargenerica Dotemu is considered an indie developer. They were even highlighted in the Indie World showcase back in 2019: https://youtu.be/67P8PDCV82M?t=131
Re: Retro RPG 'Sea Of Stars' Approaches Release With Another Stunning Trailer
@xmkbest I've had this discussion in other forums. It's like there are tiers of indie now. Like, "technically" Streets of Rage 4 is an indie title, but let's be honest, it's not "indie" at all. There's like this other tier of indie where it's not released through a big publisher, or maybe not using publisher funds, but does have a publisher and get the advantage of a lot of polish. Not sure what to call that. If EA is AAA gaming, maybe this tier of indie is AA? IDK. I kinda see this game in that category like with my SoR4 example.
Re: Retro RPG 'Sea Of Stars' Approaches Release With Another Stunning Trailer
Kinda wish I hadn't watched the trailer. I backed the kickstarter and played some of the beta. Has real potential to be a great game. But, OH MAN, spoilers on the big boss guys. I wasn't expecting that. I love the idea of a real 16-bit style with modern tech that says a dev doesn't have to worry about sprite size, how big a character can be, how detailed things are, or having to weigh custom animation to highlight something due to space (time and money will always be a consideration though). Can't wait to get my code!
Re: Pinball FX's First Marvel Collection Bounces Onto Switch Later This Month
@AG_Awesome They said the new engine would be coming to Switch, so I hope it should be the newer one.
Re: Front Mission 2: Remake Showcases Features In New Switch Trailer
@XiaoShao I would assume no. When these kinds of projects start they're pretty set in what they want to do. It's a function of ROI for development investment, so if there wasn't much QoL in the first, there isn't likely to be much in the 2nd. The only time it changes if one game of a set is a standout title; think FF VI and how it got extra love from the Pixel Remaster series.
Re: Futurama Crashes Into Fortnite Today
Honest question, does Furturama appeal to Millennials and Gen Z? I would have thought it's more of a Gen X thing; which would translate into a smaller audience appeal.
Re: Stylish Switch Exclusive 'Fashion Dreamer' Stitches November Release Date In The West
@westman98 Probably license rights. Wikipedia says Nintendo owns the distro rights to SS, which means they may also own the IP rights too.
Re: Adore Mixes Monster-Taming Action And Real-Time Battles On Switch Next Month
Think 2 of my daughters would enjoy this, but if they would have added the ability to play as a girl it would have been a sure purchase. I assume for a game like this, gender isn't key to the story, just a cosmetic thing they could even patch in.
Re: Poll: Which Dormant Nintendo Franchise Would You Most Like To See Return?
No love for Metroid Pinball? I played sooooo much of that game.
Re: Handheld Consoles Will Need Easily-Switchable Batteries By 2027, Says New EU Regulation
You know who's going to make a killing with this? Anker. All they have to do is product a generic battery spec that doesn't suck; not top-tier, just not suck. They already have the brand recognition for power/battery. Find a decent supplier, slap their brand on it, BANG probably tipple their business.
Re: Video: We Spread Some Love For The Sega Master System As Alex Shares His Childhood Games
Re: Disney Remastering Sega Genesis Platformer Gargoyles, Switch Release Confirmed
Re: Rhapsody: Marl Kingdom Chronicles Spotlights PS2 Sequel In New Trailer
@Daniel36 Pretty much any Capcom collection. It's actually hard NOT to own the same game multiple times with how bad they mix and reuse titles.
Re: Feature: What's The Best Version Of Street Fighter II On Nintendo Systems?
Re: Exclusive: Marble It Up! Ultra Rolls Out On Switch Next Month
Re: Exclusive: Marble It Up! Ultra Rolls Out On Switch Next Month
@RupeeClock That was the first question that popped into mind when I saw the headline.
Re: Ubisoft's The Settlers: New Allies Is Now Available On Nintendo Switch
Re: Random: Some Square Enix Staff Really Want A Final Fantasy VI Remake
I would pay $20-30 for an HD-2D remake without even thinking about it. I'd have a lot of reservations about going full rebirth though. The remake of 7 was a different game even if the story was mostly similar. One huge thing for me will be the music. Kefka's Domain was the first game music I ever bought. I've listened to that so, so, so many times. It's as iconic as the game itself. I'm open to some kind of enhancement, but they really have to be respectful of the original.
Re: Random: Players Are Recreating Zelda Music With Zonai Devices In Tears Of The Kingdom
Being rick-rolled and smiling at the same time. Well done. The bar this game is setting is simply staggering.
Re: Two Switch Games Will "No Longer Be Available" On The eShop
Pretty much means the publishing license is expiring. As mentioned above, games most people have heard of and had poor reviews. Which also means this was a click bait article meant to pad an article quota.
Re: Prince Of Persia Is Back With Brand New Title, Out January 2024 On Switch
Like the new art direction and mechanics shown here. Looks like a solid title. I'm kind of surprised the release date is after the holidays though. That's curious. Is it a smaller game and they want to avoid the bigger AAA releases? Most gaming budgets are spent by then; except for like gift card money.
Re: Brilliant RPG Chained Echoes Is Getting A New Game + Mode Very Soon
Still on my wishlist. Will grab it the next time it's on sale.
