After being announced back in August, Nightdive Studios and Lucasfilm Games have today revealed that Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster will be blasting its way onto Switch next year on 28th February 2024.
Originally released on MS-DOS and Apple Macintosh in 1995, this remaster will see you taking on the role of Kyle Katarn, a member of the Rebel Alliance who infiltrates the Galactic Empire and discovers a sinister secret operation that will boost the Empire's power. It's classic Star Wars good vs. evil, right vs. wrong, with some retro FPS vibes to boot.
Nightdive Studios has stated that the remaster will run on "modern consoles" with "up to 4K resolution at 120FPS" though the Switch is not included in this specification so we'll have to wait a little longer to find out how slick that space shooting is on the go. For some more information on the game's features and a look at a handful of screenshots, check out the following:
Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster Key Features:
- Engaging first-person ground combat featuring ten weapons and twenty types of enemies
- Up to 4K 120FPS visuals on PC, PlayStation 4|5, and Xbox One and Series X|S
- Advanced 3D rendering enables realistic lighting and atmospheric effects
- Modern gamepad support adds a new weapon wheel, rumble, and motion/gyro controls
- Trophies and Achievements on Windows PC via Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles
We are going to have to wait for a few more months before we can get our hands on this one, but we're looking forward to finding out exactly what the Switch version will have in store.

Oh, I thought Quake II was already on Switch? 😅
Soooooo ready to give this one another go after all these years!
Damn, I thought this was coming this year. Oh well, a little bit longer to wait.
That’s right around the corner after my birthday, guess I now have plans already!
@LadyCharlie I lol’d, thanks for that.
Yessssss. Love the original Dark Forces. Can't wait.
Sadly, I remember all of the games in the series. The tie fighter one especially was a favorite. I also have no desire to replay any of these old games after replaying Jedi outcast. Some games, nostalgia is just fine. It’s why I won’t be getting the Jurassic park collections too.
@LadyCharlie out here with the comment of the week haha
This is literally one of the first video games I remember playing as a kid. Good ole’ MS-DOS!
Please.. Star Wars Shadows of The Empire Remastered and Star Wars Rogue Squadron Collection
Hopefully Jedi Knight gets the same treatment. It’s going to be weird having the first, third, and fourth games in the series on Switch without having the second one. Still, I’m looking forward to returning to this classic.
@marcelominucelli what I would give for a HD remastered collection for the Rogue Squadron trilogy! Still to this day my favorite Star Wars games! Shadows of the Empire hasn’t aged particularly well but I would take that as well. Though that would perhaps be better suited for Switch Online Expansion Pass if Nintendo can work out the licensing
@marcelominucelli A Rogue Squadron re-release desperately needs to happen. The kids need reminding of what Star Wars games used to be.
@PoeTheLizard @Darthmoogle @marcelominucelli
Yes, I would also love to see the trilogy make a comeback. Considering Nintendo holds some level of exclusivity rights to those games, I can imagine it will be very easy for them to bring it back.
love to see shadows of the empire remasted so we can watch people rage quit on the underwater tentacle monster.
I hope the controls are better than what I see in that video. I get that the original game was KBM, but there's no excuse for not having good analog controls in this era of console games. Still, I'm really hoping this is good. I enjoyed the original game a ton. It's been more than long enough since I've played it last that it would be a new experience again.
My 15 year old eyes could deal with what a strobe-fest this game was but at 43 I need a lie down just from watching the trailer
Aww, I thought this would be out by end of year, I'd been checking the eshop way too often! 😅
Like almost everyone I’ve had my frustrations with how Disney has handled Star Wars, which has frankly been pretty pitiful mostly, but they’ve been doing really good by gaming. Sure it stumbled out of the gate with the EA fiasco, but unlike in their film or TV division, they actually learned from their mistakes in gaming and got better, solid new and upcoming titles and a reverence for the games that came before.
I think I played this on my 486DX computer back in the 90's and really enjoyed it.
I will give this a try next year after I catch up on my backlog.
If the game play would have looked like the cut scenes! Consider I would.
@Darthmoogle I bet they won't do a Rogue Squadron remaster simply bc they won't want to admit that 20+ year old games outstrip the new, AAA EA games in terms of space combat gameplay by an IMMENSE margin lol
jk. i hope. they'd be leaving massive money on the table if they didn't do this.
Remastered you say? it still looks like an old MS DOS Windows 95 game for cripes sake
You can't leave a one word comment on NL so .... Niceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Come on Nightdive Studios, where’s my Blood: Fresh Supply announcement for Switch coming?
@demacho same with the Battlefront games from the PS2 era. way better than the "modern" ones. would love to see them come back.
@RiasGremory Or the Droid fight in the junkyard. LOVE Shadows of the Empire, but it was HARD!!
This is going to be amazing!!!! It's incredible that graphics from that era can create so much immersion. Sometimes even more effectively than games of today.
I see Nightdive, I buy.
@The_Dragons_Mouth I would be absolutely over the moon for that. I'd love to explore that creepy game on Switch.
One of the few classic Star Wars games I didn't play back in the day, I'll most likely get this day one, specially now that gyro aiming is confirmed!
@LikelySatan Yeah, I don’t understand why they haven’t done it yet. It’s one of my favs on PC years ago.
Nightdive does fantastic work and I'll definitely be getting this... but boy oh boy, do those "remastered" cutscenes look like they were "upscaled" by AI.
@LadyCharlie
Of all the Quake/Doom clones, I think the most bizarre one was the X-Men one!
Looks great, this game always suffered from early FPS controls before.
@Spider-Kev Ravages of Apocalypse is definitely one of the games of all time.
@LadyCharlie
One of the what games?
You left out at least one word. LoL
Is there going to be a physical for this one?
Had good times playing this on my first PC a mac performa with cd drive
I'm just glad we're getting real star wars on the switch now. Maybe they'll release battlefront 2 (2005) next it this one hits well.
