So pumped for this. Now that we have the EGM kickstarter that will put all EGM issues online, it'll be double awesome to look back at the media coverage the series got the years and the specific releases. What a great time for nostalgia!
One thing I can't fully decide on is the music. I wrestled with this on DQ XII. The first release had midi music instead of the full orchestration. Honestly, I didn't mind it because it played in with the throwback/semi-retro feel of the game. I had the CE version with the OST, so I knew what the full score sounded like. When I patched my PC version (ya, bought the game multiple times) with the full orchestra version, yes I could tell the difference, but that point I was like 40/60 hours in and it felt weird. I didn't keep playing the PC version even though the HD upscale and music was neat, i wanted to finish the game on the ps4 first. I need to go back and start over on the PC. Wonder how I'll feel about the music now. Allll of that said, I wonder how I'll feel about the update music in DQIII. There is such a charm in older chip tune when it was done well. In a way, modern music with lack of limits doesn't quite rise to the same challenge sometimes.
Seen a few comments about how going from 3 back to 1 is going to be jarring from the game mechanics perspective since 1 didn't have a party and was much shorter. That's been bugging me a little too. I'm wondering if they're going to do anything to try to help with that transition. Hopefully nothing too drastic, but especially for people new the series it'll be a big, wait what just happened, kinda deal.
Either way, I'm super looking forward to getting DQ III this year. I put it on my Christmas list for the family to buy for me, so it's going to be painful not playing it at release. Maybe we'll get a little more about QoL stuff that's been added before release. I also assume they'll be one more really nice trailer before release.
I gotta say, this has a similar amount of "awe" like when I first saw Rayman on the PS1 with so much color and fully drawn backgrounds, etc. The art and animation displayed here are amazing. I'd want to see more gameplay before getting excited about the game though. Real easy to spend all your funding in art and animation and then the gameplay mechanic being almost an afterthought. It was mentioned earlier about the main character looks a bit weightless. Hopefully that's a design choice for a reason and not just the gaming having loose controls. Eyecandy is off the chart. Hopefully the same itself has equal substance.
I kinda doubt enough fans are familiar with the lore of the IP to make this anything more than just a mostly generic Ninja flick with the IP's name slapped on it. Maybe they'll have a signature move or something as the killing blow for the big boss fight scene at the end. But, other than that, meh. I'll probably still see it, just not at the theater.
IDK, maybe I'm being too harsh. It could be a really good mostly-generic Ninja flick even w/o the IP lore and name. Nothing wrong with a solid summer popcorn movie. But, it would be nice if it were more than just a string of action set pieces.
Saw this kickstarter campaign a few days ago. Was tempted to back it, but since I haven't played the earlier games I thought I should first. I think I own the first one off some Humble Bundle or some other pack of games thing. I mean, looks interesting, but I'm not familiar enough with the IP to just pluck down money. But, I think the series has sold ok?
Dear NL, you keep using that phrase. I do not think you are using it well. Cell shaded does not necessarily mean it's inspired by Studio Ghibli. Please find another way to describe what vibe you feel the game is giving off. You've overused this one.
EDIT: Sigh. Commented before I watched the video, and in the video pitch it claims it was so inspired. BLEH.
The comment about AI generated content/assets and IP rights is a really interesting one when you consider Nintendo's legal strategy to protect its IP. To me it makes sense. They wouldn't want to be on the receiving end with a claim that some key AI content was the result of training data that belonged to someone else and therefore might be open to an IP rights lawsuit. Nintendo of all companies would be highly protective of that. To me both sets of comments are on-brand for Nintendo and I appreciate their understanding of that.
I think all of the games are Atari 1st party IP, so no change for Activision to show up to the party. Or any 3rd party title for that matter. Shame, because there are definitely some outstanding games from Activision that need to get the treatment.
@Zeebor15 He also had the opportunity to do the announcement for Colossal Cave and the return of Ken & Roberta Williams back to gaming. He's doing very well in that space it seems!
I wasn't sure if I'd be able to resist this, but no. I'm probably going to have to put this on the list for next year. It's too much. It's such an interesting take on cosy and the LOTR IP. It's kinda genius.
big 'ol grain of salt taken while watching most of that. I'll admit it looks convincing with her talking points on why, etc. If they keep the same strategy of having an base unit, plus/oled and then lite, ya this could end up being close. I'm hoping they just go with OLED and not have an LCD as the base. it'll cost more, but I want the OLED model first. I've held out upgrading to the OLED version, but every time I see the screen it just begs me come home. It would be a nice surprise for my wife. She actually plays her Switch more than I play mine. Very much looking forward to the full reveal.
All of that said, after seeing the price of the PS5 Pro, I'm very concerned about what price S2 comes in at. I feel a bit of an ouch coming. The financial analysis was pretty convincing why they delayed the launch due to financing costs, etc. The change in the yen vs the dollar this month tho? - oh boy.
An effective trailer, especially with the singing.
I know this is going to seem like a stretch, but to me there's a really interesting vibe here that relates back to one of the original themes from Robotech - about the clause of culture where the genetic bread for war beings didn't have non-war oriented culture, including music & singing. I never would have thought to use that as a core theme to base an RPG on. It's a great theme to base a story on that I don't think I've seen in any games; even the other Robotech based games.
Going to have to keep an eye on this. Might be a sleeper hit.
OH! This looks like a love letter style game. Love that. Looks like a lot of attention to detail went into the presentation. If the game plays like what I see in the trailer this should be an awesome retro romp. I see all kinds of influence from various 8/16 bit games, some Knights of Pen and Paper, etc. This wasn't on my holiday 2024 radar, but it is now.
oooh yeah. I always wanted to pick this up on Steam, but never got around to it for stupid reasons. This got great reviews. Assuming it runs well on Switch this should do well. I need to pick this up.
Really hoping this plays well on Switch. I may play it on Steam, but I think my wife would enjoy this kind of game on Switch. Dreamlight Valley performance between PC and Switch is a thing. Makes me hope that Switch 2 is much more geared to support open world/sandbox games as that continues to be a growth area for gaming.
Hard no. It's his. Those are his spoils for leading NoA. Why are people demanding him to do this? Only a few wealthy collector could probably even afford what his collection would go for; more so if he signed it. This is dumb. Internet needs to stop being the internet for a moment and move on.
I'm perfectly fine with him giving full attention to finish up 1.6. It's the right move to support the long time fans. It'll help HC in the long run since everyone will know he's likely to support that game the same way. It's great publicity.
If HC is as good as SV was, it'll be worth the wait. I for one appreciate these small acknowledgements that things are progressing.
Unless they do a 1st party direct, I guess this is our big push for the holiday releases. I also doubt we'll get much in the way of surprise announcements. Given the state of the industry, I'm probably more excited by the indie releases right now. The AAA studios got too big and now they're laying off so many developers.
@Yalloo Go look at Pi Hole. You'll never see another ad.
Where were these games when I was younger and the OG show came out? I'm sure there were similar beat 'em games in Japan, but I don't remember any console games from that time. Maybe I was more of a PC gamer and just didn't notice. This at least looks like it could be some fun. I'm too old for Power Rangers, but I do enjoy a good beat 'em up. Will keep an eye on this one.
Aspyr. Enough said. I've lost all faith in them. They need to go back to specializing in Mac ports. There are better studios that should handle any future SW title remasters.
huh, is there really a market for this game after so much time and how popular ACNH became, but especially all the all-ran titles? The market is a lot more full for this style of game now. Would a straight port be enough? I never played MySims, given the timeline it's not hard to estimate the influence ACNH would have at this point. Maybe if they port it and it's $15, but those screens translate to a $60 USD price. I think it would need to have a fresh take to sell at that price, not just a port.
It's mixing some genres and ideas to a point I can't quite get the vibe it's going for in the trailer. It sorta has a feel like Another World, but more action. I'm curious about, but might wait a bit for at least a preview or more game play vids.
If Nintendo continues their philosophy of each member of the household having their own system, I don't think a $499 price point works. $349 barely work and it'll take a long time to get the same market saturation as the OG Switch unless there will be a Lite-type model at a lower price soon if they don't launch together.
I've been worried about this given what covid and market conditions have done to component prices. I'm not surprised the market is thinking Nintendo might have to go so high. Hopefully the delay in the launch is to get cost down. There was a really good analysis piece a few months ago talking about why Nintendo decided to delay. That was a lot around costs, but not necessarily silicon component costs. But, has the same overall impact. they won't launch the full suite all at once. That's too many SKUs to try to launch with partners. Hopefully they launch with a base model at $349 (tops) and then later introduce the pro/lite models the following year. That gives them time to build up the library to move people over too.
Okay, ok. I'll admit; when this first hit social media I was super secretly this was some how related to Laughing Man from GitS: SAC. That was such a good series. I need to go watch it.
The real record would be to find a game that exists on as many platforms as possible. That might be Pacman? I doubt there is one game that is on every one of those systems, but there's probably one title with the highest number of systems it was ported to. The next obvious game might be Tetris.
Far too young. I wasn't a huge fan of the series, but I'd watched much of the earlier seasons and enjoyed her work with the characters. That dreaded C word. It took my wife's oldest sister as well. It wrecks so many lives. May her work live on.
@Servbot_EJ It would be awesome to get some 2D HD love for some of the early games. When I first saw the game with that big sticker about being a 6 megabit game, I was amazed at ... how big? how many enemies? how many distinct locations? how loooooong? LOL Would love to see some of those environments get the 2D HD treatment. But, after I finish DQ 3-1-2 remakes naturally.
I kinda hope it's their super game that's been hinted at, but no details given for a while now. But, the definition of unannounced make things ambiguous. Like, they announced the reboot stuff, so probably not one of those games, but what does "announced" mean because they could say they hadn't given specific details about what they are doing with any one specific title of the reboot (at least that I've seen).
But, ya, please put a break on the Sonic games.
I still think there are buyout talks going on between MS and Sega. Sega has made so many moves over the last few years that really align with trying to make it easier to sell the company. But, I am surprised it's taken this long if that's really going to happen. I can only assume it's because selling a Japanese legacy company like Sega to an American company is no small feat. Sega has such a treasure trove of legacy and legendary IP to work with with so much of it just sitting around collecting dust that it would be easy for money bags MS to fund any number of spin-off or reboot projects to test in the market. Double so if the intent was just to fuel GamePass which would need that kind of model and work well for testing the market with smaller projects that might gain critical acclaim - didn't MS complain about wanting more awards?
Bah. I'm pre-deck building old. I was able to play some of Slay the Spire, and I've tried Hearthstone countless times. I can win some matches, but my old brain just struggles so much with this core game mechanic. Shame too because I think I would enjoy this kind of game mechanic and these worlds are interesting.
I love stuff like this. Thanks for sharing the video. Was familiar with a good bit of this, but it's aways fun to explore it further and listen to examples.
I wish there was an option for the Switch 2 question to focus on FPS. 4k is kinda meh. I highly doubt Nintendo will put in enough ram for textures to really push 4k well. that's not what they are. I can totally see DLSS being used but mostly to drive 60fps to be rock solid with only a modest bump in spec. Fine to upscale output to 4k, but not even try to target that for internal rendering and all the texture space that would come with that. I'd say not even framebuffer to try to build an internal 4k image. Do that purely on the output.
I assume the costs were probably to support development tools like the main SDK and specialized libraries to support new functions like AI upscale, etc. That kind of thing would make sense, but you'd also think they would have started that previously to support 3rd party developers to have their launch titles ready to go. But, maybe this is just expanding it for smaller partners and indie?
Biggest con of the Switch cart is the size. Yes, holds a lot, but oh, so easy to lose them. I refuse to by games on cart for my kids to share. It's a sure bet the game would be lost within a week before they call got time to play it. Shame too because it would be way cheaper than having to by multiple digital copies of the same game. SIGH.
I have a high nostalgia for the SNES carts since I had the most of those than any other Nintendo system. But, I kinda like the design of the NES carts. It never bothered me knowing they were mostly empty. I think the carts that fascinated me the most, non-Nintendo system, were the TG-16 ones. Little did we know then it would be come the norm now. LOL
Even if they only do it on the digital side, I really hope they do. There are several games I've had to pass up due to time and money. It would be nice to go back and pickup some 1st party classics at some point. Triple bonus points if they really do keep backward compat with the next system. Wait, not x10 bonus points if they patch those games to scale with the new system, even just to tweak internal resolution and fps to 60. THAT would be worth the price hands down for almost any 1st party title. I might even re-buy BotW on digital if they did that.
@Daniel36I played some text based combat game back in the DOS days. I cannot remember the name, maybe Empire? IDK. It really did let you strict your imagination of what all the text characters represented. But, there was something a little more magical about the crude graphics that push my imagination a little of what it was like in that dungeon (or whatever location). Guess it would have been asking too much to have a toggle between text and pixel graphics.
When the trailer for this dropped I wondered about the movement. I wasn't sure if it was floaty or sluggish, etc. Now we know. I doubt they'll patch that. It's probably core to the game or engine. Shame too. I like the idea here.
The game is total zen. It's hard to describe. It askes little, but returns so much. And, there's no penalty or sense of urgency unless you bring it with you.
I get that this is the first Official product of this kind, but wow this is seriously late to the party. It feels like a throw away product just to try to get some added revenue for the holiday since system and game sales are likely to be weak. Actually, I wonder if this might have been planned the whole time. Maybe there was a mortarium on such 1st party accessories to support 3rd party ones? That's like the only think that comes to mind why introduce this now at the end of the life span of the system. Such an odd decision. I wonder if maybe it's actually being made by someone like Power A just under Nintendo's brand. That would actually make the most sense.
Can't wait for this. But, I put it on my Christmas list for my family. I'll have to wait a bit longer to play after release. It's fine. DQ is usually the kind of game you savor, not binge. I did that with the last game. Although, if I let the family get this for me for Christmas, I'll be off for several days, so some binge playing will likely happen.
This game just keeps looking better and better. Hope the wait for 1 & 2 won't be too long. Wonder if the soundtrack will get a release on streaming too.
<checks kickstarter history> Oh ya, looks like I initially backed this, but cancelled. Not sure if I was just burned out, or wasn't sure if my kids would actually like this. They kinda like Kikki's Delivery Service. Glad to see this come to release. I like how the art is certainly inspired by, but not trying to be a direct clone of Miyazaki's style
Not at that price given it's mobile roots. I assume there won't be IAP. Regardless, the gameplay looks a little also-ran. That's not a bad thing, but it better play great, especially single player for that price.
Super excited for this. LOVE the visuals, and the QoL stuff mentioned in the article sounds like should go a long way to help ease people into the game. Honesty can't decide if I should get this for myself or let the family get it for me for Christmas. Would love to be playing this over Thanksgiving break, but it's a perfect gift idea. I wonder how they will space 1 & 2 for release schedule. Wasn't 1 kind of short? I wonder if maybe they will be bundled together. Otherwise, 2 releases in a year seems tricky.
Hopefully we'll get another big trailer drop in the fall.
I picked up the sequel a long while back. Meh. It was fun at first but part of the game really, really annoyed me, especially the cat (forgot his name). He's basically your proxy for not having a voice in the game, but his personality was so, so grating. There were some other aspects that I just didn't like, but I think the cat was the worst. I enjoyed the art direction though. Although the soundtrack wasn't anything memorable.

The real record would be to find a game that exists on as many platforms as possible. That might be Pacman? I doubt there is one game that is on every one of those systems, but there's probably one title with the highest number of systems it was ported to. The next obvious game might be Tetris.
Re: Rachael Lillis, Voice Actor For Pokémon's Misty And Jessie, Has Passed Away
Far too young. I wasn't a huge fan of the series, but I'd watched much of the earlier seasons and enjoyed her work with the characters. That dreaded C word. It took my wife's oldest sister as well. It wrecks so many lives. May her work live on.
RIP
Re: Sega's Gamescom 2024 Line Up Includes 'Global Premier' Of Unannounced Project
Re: Sega's Gamescom 2024 Line Up Includes 'Global Premier' Of Unannounced Project
Re: PSP Remake Fate/Extra Record Bags A 2025 Release Window On Switch

Re: Nintendo Life's Switch Summer Survey 2024
I wish there was an option for the Switch 2 question to focus on FPS. 4k is kinda meh. I highly doubt Nintendo will put in enough ram for textures to really push 4k well. that's not what they are. I can totally see DLSS being used but mostly to drive 60fps to be rock solid with only a modest bump in spec. Fine to upscale output to 4k, but not even try to target that for internal rendering and all the texture space that would come with that. I'd say not even framebuffer to try to build an internal 4k image. Do that purely on the output.
Re: Nintendo Life's Switch Summer Survey 2024
@Nintoz Shut up and take my money! I'd but that in an instant.
Re: Nintendo Notes A Rise In Research And Development Costs As 'Switch 2' Looms
I assume the costs were probably to support development tools like the main SDK and specialized libraries to support new functions like AI upscale, etc. That kind of thing would make sense, but you'd also think they would have started that previously to support 3rd party developers to have their launch titles ready to go. But, maybe this is just expanding it for smaller partners and indie?
Re: Poll: Which Is Your Favourite Nintendo Game Cartridge Design?
LOL
Re: Talking Point: Will The Switch Ever Get A 'Nintendo Selects' Range?
Even if they only do it on the digital side, I really hope they do. There are several games I've had to pass up due to time and money. It would be nice to go back and pickup some 1st party classics at some point. Triple bonus points if they really do keep backward compat with the next system. Wait, not x10 bonus points if they patch those games to scale with the new system, even just to tweak internal resolution and fps to 60. THAT would be worth the price hands down for almost any 1st party title. I might even re-buy BotW on digital if they did that.
Re: The Legendary 'Epyx Rogue' Is Now On Switch, But Players Have Noticed A Severe Bug
Re: Review: Abathor (Switch) - Retro Fantasy Hack 'N' Slash Is Great Fun With Friends
When the trailer for this dropped I wondered about the movement. I wasn't sure if it was floaty or sluggish, etc. Now we know. I doubt they'll patch that. It's probably core to the game or engine. Shame too. I like the idea here.
Re: PowerWash Simulator Celebrates Second Anniversary With New Free Content Update
@Johnno137426 The struggle is very real.
The game is total zen. It's hard to describe. It askes little, but returns so much. And, there's no penalty or sense of urgency unless you bring it with you.
Re: Nintendo Announces Official Switch Joy-Con Charging Stand
I get that this is the first Official product of this kind, but wow this is seriously late to the party. It feels like a throw away product just to try to get some added revenue for the holiday since system and game sales are likely to be weak. Actually, I wonder if this might have been planned the whole time. Maybe there was a mortarium on such 1st party accessories to support 3rd party ones? That's like the only think that comes to mind why introduce this now at the end of the life span of the system. Such an odd decision. I wonder if maybe it's actually being made by someone like Power A just under Nintendo's brand. That would actually make the most sense.
Re: Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake Looks Stunning In New Gameplay Footage
@OwenGamer22 That's certainly what I'm hoping. Fingers crossed.
Re: Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake Looks Stunning In New Gameplay Footage
"Shut up and take my money!" -Fry
Can't wait for this. But, I put it on my Christmas list for my family. I'll have to wait a bit longer to play after release. It's fine. DQ is usually the kind of game you savor, not binge. I did that with the last game. Although, if I let the family get this for me for Christmas, I'll be off for several days, so some binge playing will likely happen.
This game just keeps looking better and better. Hope the wait for 1 & 2 won't be too long. Wonder if the soundtrack will get a release on streaming too.
Re: Kiki's Delivery Service Meets Wind Waker In 'Mika And The Witch's Mountain'
<checks kickstarter history> Oh ya, looks like I initially backed this, but cancelled. Not sure if I was just burned out, or wasn't sure if my kids would actually like this. They kinda like Kikki's Delivery Service. Glad to see this come to release. I like how the art is certainly inspired by, but not trying to be a direct clone of Miyazaki's style

Re: Game Freak Launches A New Mobile Title, But It's Not Pokémon
The video has a strong Pokemon Quest vibe. I enjoyed the game. I think I finished it too. Not sure I'm ready to play that kind of game again.
Re: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Return In A New Roguelike Action Game Next Month
Not at that price given it's mobile roots. I assume there won't be IAP. Regardless, the gameplay looks a little also-ran. That's not a bad thing, but it better play great, especially single player for that price.
Re: Hands On: Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake Is Much More Than A Pretty Picture
Re: Hands On: 'Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure' Is A Rubix Cube Zelda-Like, And We Love It
I feel like I've seen this game mechanic in a game a long while back. I can't remember the name. Maybe a mobile game?
Re: Poll: So, Will You Be Getting Monster Hunter Stories For Switch?
I picked up the sequel a long while back. Meh. It was fun at first but part of the game really, really annoyed me, especially the cat (forgot his name). He's basically your proxy for not having a voice in the game, but his personality was so, so grating. There were some other aspects that I just didn't like, but I think the cat was the worst. I enjoyed the art direction though. Although the soundtrack wasn't anything memorable.
