@Camilla idk, the more I think about it, the more I think Nintendo, based on what they've been saying trying to capture the mainstream casual crowd, will go with the cheaper chip, but still very capable in terms of providing graphics on par or slightly better than the wiiu (X1 chip) aaaaand priced at $129-$149. That is like impulse buy territory. It could be very appealing to consumers who don't usually buy nintendo but are intrigued by the new Zelda: BOTW. I actually see a lot of potential in this.
@Camilla newer would always be better, right? Except for cost, but after checking on launch prices for the shield set top box (with X1) at $199 (probably when the X1 was new) It seems pretty reasonable to just go with latest and greatest and still have an affordable system. And, it seems Nintendo will cut cost by having low on board memory assuming everyone has SD cards to spare
@Camilla couldn't find anything on the X2, but looking at the X1 videos of it playing PS3 games make me want to believe NX is replacing the 3DS. But, with nintendo's unified approach this maybe a way of wiping the slate clean and starting with a whole new approach of having one system for everything, meaning portable and home console. Sure, graphics will be on par with the wiiu, but nintendo's philosophy have drastically changed and this maybe the approach for the future for nintendo. One day we'll probably look back and see the wiiu as a crude experiment for what was to come.
Based on q1 results for wiiu sales - it seems possible wiiu could exceed its 800,000 goal. I'm sure they are expecting a sharp drop off for q4 when the NX is imminent.
Can't say I'm going to miss the splatfests. Haven't played in a while, but I pretty much played ranked battles exclusively. The system didn't make sense and always favored the least popular of the two choices. I would consciously gauge which choice was least popular and select it for my team. It never failed, at least in the states. If I had to choose which stage is the best for turf war, it would definitely be the skatepark. It felt like battle for control of the central tower. Control the tower and your team likely won the match.
@cleveland124 I'm not denying performance as necessary for sustainable business - that is obvious. I just don't like the growing triteness of it all. I just worry the failed wiiu will waver nintendo's confidence to innovate effectively and further reinforced by Pacther-types calling for a nintendo playstation type device. That would be a disaster. You mention Apple - they were at their most innovative when their backs were against the wall - when they weren't the biggest company in the world and actually on the brink of bankruptcy. I'm hoping the NX is a success not because of COD and teraflops but because of a rejection of the status quo - I guess that was my point. Apple didn't become the success they are today by trying to copy microsofts playbook.
@cleveland124 COD's popularity doesn't bother me. I was more making an indictment on this rule book on how to create a successful console (which Pacther is probably right). Investors first attitude and dont create anything thats unproven.
I interpreted microsofts decree of reinventing the console cycle as, "what we really mean is - we expect you to spend at least a grand each console cycle (6-7 years) on hardware alone from now on, if you want the full experience."
Call of Duty and teraflops ensure success. The sad state of gaming. Can the average gamer tell the difference between, say, a console with 3 teraflops and 4 teraflops. People act like the PS4 has all the power you need until the next console comes along. As if, the previous gen games are now unplayable, like playing in the Stone Age. I believe, more and more, what Iwata said about video games plateauing to some extent over the past few years and will be more so in the futue. Look at this past e3, I feel like they've been showing the same games since 2008 - third person view, guy with gun, half-baked plots, lots of cartoonish violence, but hey! Microsoft is promising a new Xbox one with (wait for it) more teraflops! What a sham!
They're not even trying to hide it, lol. Provides proof that game concept alone doesn't make a good game. This looks like it plays pretty rough compared to real splatoon.
I wonder how much hard work miyamoto performs now. I imagine him floating around from team to team saying things like, "cool idea! Know what would be cooler? How about allowing them to transform into squids...hey. Listen guys - I've got to run to the store to pick up a pack of smokes, but, yeah..., you guys work on that squid thing. I'll check in later."
Bought this game yesterday, but have no idea when I'll be able to play it. Have a lot of games to play ahead of it, including a couple of RPGs. I just felt like it would be one of those games where the physical edition will disappear forever after three months and be on ebay for $80 plus.
Isn't nintendo's market pretty weak in the UK anyways.
I'm curious how this will affect NOE. There based in Germany, right? So will they essentially be exporting products to the UK. I mean, unless they establish NOUK - Britians could very well just import Nintendo products from America, if they get a better deal.
I would assume nintendo fans in UK will have to pay more - similar to Australia. Well, maybe not as expensive. Idk
@TrueWiiMaster agreed. I thought sticker star was fun. The end fight with bowser is probably the best in the series. The sticker system created some interesting battle mechanics. I don't understand why people believe it to be broken. I guess because it dared to be different then the usual turn-based systems. TTYD was good, but so are all the other entries in the series.
Makes me want to play Ogre Battle 64. I bought it late in the N64 cycle for like 20 bucks (long after GC hit the market) and it was not what I expected. Ironically, I expected it to be turn-based like this version. I was a little disappointed at first, but eventually grew to enjoy it. However, I didn't get far as I became distracted with the GameCube. Is Ogre Battle 64 still available on wii shop? I really enjoyed the sprite work of all the characters.
@gatorboi352 Yep, I'm a dying breed. I've been gaming since 1986 with the Atari 2600 and owned just about every system since. And, the wiiu made me excited about video games for the first time in a long time. I'll happily defend the wiiu - the most misunderstood video game platform. Playstation and Xbox ruined the video game industry IMO - gone are the Wild West days of video games and maverick developers - now replaced with focus-group, paint-by-numbers...whatever sells, big business tactics. That's why I'll defend the wiiu because it's the last voice, albeit struggling, of the golden era of video games.
How's Gainesville these days? I graduated there in '06. Go Gators!!
@DarthNocturnal Well, Splatoon has an alternate traditional control set-up because its the only game I mentioned that can function with traditional controls (well, except Pikmin, but that will just further the argument against antiquated controls). Anyways, I've heard people dismiss star fox zero before playing it because of motion controls.
@A01 I know I don't have a popular opinion. But, I genuinely believe Nintendo doesn't make these control set-ups just for the sake of being different. Starfox Zero, I admit has been the longest time spent for me getting used to the controls, would not be the same game with traditional controls. Once you get used to the controls (I know - part of the problem) the game really shines and makes for an incredible experience.
'familiar input systems' and 'economic realities' - screw it. I'm glad Nintendo doesn't conform to industry standards of antiquated controller set-ups and assembly line games. The best games I've played in the past 5 years (maybe my whole gaming life) have had 'awkward controls'. Games like Skyward Sword, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Pikmin 3, Splatoon, and Starfox Zero are amazing games and the type of games that actually keep me excited about the future of video games. Every time I see a review video for a hit game these days and see a stiff reticle moving slowly - it just seems like a broken system to me. People who criticize games for having different controls don't seem to understand the freedom these different control set-ups give the gamer, unlike their preferred games with self imposed restrictions and the same gameplay from 20 years ago.
What is the scope of this game? I mean, is it a $20 game or a $50 game?
I hope it turns out successful (I'm interested) and captures that '90s rare magic. And, if so, Nintendo will take notice and get the band back together just like the old days.
I hope they bring back Nintendo breakfast cereal and the Captain N Saturday morning cartoon. Seriously, as a kid these sort of ventures kept me hooked on Nintendo.
@argh4430 he's technically right; the wiiu will still probably get annual dance games and indie games on the eshop. But...yeah, all of nintendo's resources will go into developing new non-games??
Kid Icarus would probably be a good place to start and learn the ropes. It has a rich story already and they don't have worry about tarnishing its legacy with a bad movie, like they would risk with Zelda (it'll probably be another 20 years before another kid Icarus game comes out anyways).
The controls took sometime for me, but with the 3d audio and cinematic views in all-range mode - I definitely agree with the immersion effect. I've only played through the game once, and I think as I was getting comfortable with one vehicle type I was being switched over to another quickly and having to adjust. It wasn't until the final boss that everything clicked: the controls, cinematic views, 3-d audio, cockpit aim...my mind was blown. After replaying some of the levels, they are definitely smoother experiences. I still have somewhat of a problem of overusing the cockpit view during the on-rails levels when you can actually just play it like old-school star fox (that building came out of nowhere!).
@Spoony_Tech thanks, I'll definitely download Persona Q this weekend. I hope EOV has an overworld (well, I hope first it comes west!) I liked the dofferent levels of ascension and the light puzzle elements, such as avoiding tornados and stuff. After reading up on the series a little bit, it appears the director for EOV directed just about every entry except EOIV, so I guess it's pretty uncertain if there will be an overworld or not.
Started playing EOIV and remembered how awesome it is. It's quickly become one of my all time favorite RPG's. It's my first and only EO game so far. I'm about to pull the trigger on downloading Persona Q (on sale right now for 20 bucks), but am wondering how similar it is to EOIV. Also, is EOIV the only entry with an overworld?
I haven't bought an EA game since Road Rash...they ruined James Bond back in the GameCube days...they virtually tried to extort Nintendo during the release of wiiu with the whole eshop thing...they ditched the NCAA!!...out of the big generic video games inc., they are the least missed. Ubisoft seems to at least try with their games and have released some incredible games over the years.
@Nintendian Hollywood will screw it up. It will probably not resemble the original in anyway and just be a derivative sci-fi action movie. Isn't it suppose to take place in the west? If so, may as well come up with a new title and leave it at, 'inspired by Akira'
It's not sonic the franchise - it's Sonic the hedgehog, the first game that got inducted. And, sonic was innovative when it came out and mind-blowing too. We can't forget that Genesis-era Sonic was top notch, despite the 2000's era Sonic making a lot of people groan.
Whenever I hear a way-too-soon release date on a game with little information and Nintendo is involved - you can, at minimum, add an extra 18 months. We all know this new Retro game won't come out until April/May 2019. Also, Retro is hardly a rare. Rare was turning out 2-3 games a year - it takes retro a decade to release 3 games.
What would be the rush shipping the PS4K this year? Or even next year? estimates suggest 4K won't really take over the HD market until about 2020. Which seems about the time Sony would be releasing a PS4 successor anyways. What's the rush? They have a strangle hold on the market right now, unless they plan on giving away free 4K TVs with the purchase of an upgraded PS4. If they release this year, they will be selling to a limited market and doing potential harm to their long time supporters. Besides, isn't the PSVR releasing this year? It'll be interesting to see how this works out for Sony. They could hit out of the park or repeat Sega's mistake from the mid '90s.
Very cool! I remember within about two years of getting a launch N64, I had to get a new controller to replace the original because the stick got very loose. Ever since, I became overly conscious of this and am surprised to know there are N64 controllers that are probably 20 years old still functioning.
That sounds like peanuts for Nintendo. Their retail releases generate 100s of millions of dollars in a relatively short time. Sure the overhead is more on retail releases, but Miitomo will have to sustain this for a very long time to keep investors happy. I haven't tried the app (or most of these types of things), but aren't these apps usually just favors of the week? people move on pretty quickly, right? I would love to be wrong, but this app is probably at its peak popularity right now. Although, I'd imagine the production on this app is a fraction of the cost of a wiiu game. I'm sure they're profiting either way, but they were probably hoping for bigger download numbers.
I don't play fighters often, but decided to get pokken because the demo at the store was fun and the fighting games I did enjoy (post 16-bit era) were by Namco, namely SoulEdge and tekken 2. Anyways, so after playing online for about 30 matches (with a paltry 35% win percentage) I find fighting strangers to be extremely frustrating. I usually win easy or lose badly - no inbetween. I think the pikachu libre (whatever's he's called) is broken as well. The few times I had to fight him online, the player had like an 80% win percentage (well over a 100 matches) and gave me no chance to even move my gardevoir. I got stuck fighting this person twice in a row (the second match I just set the controller on the table) and watched instead of getting frustrating and screaming in my head, 'I'm pressing the damn button!!'. Anyways the guy kept doing the same three moves over and over and over again in the same order - is this the mark of a good player in competitive fighting games?? I picked up his pattern but couldn't apply any tactics because he was just way too fast.
I remember being hugely disappointed with this game when it came out. It gave me this feeling of 'that's it?!?' However, I really liked the pop-up book world select part.
@Danrenfroe2016 Lol, Tomb Raider was the exact game I was thinking about. the last stage on Burning Rangers for the Saturn is pretty rough. It appears like it's incomplete or something or, the developer ran out of time.

I hope Lego city gets a discount in the U.S. It's strange 3D World isn't included.
Re: SurveyMonkey Intelligence Estimates Four Million Users and Daily Revenue of $40,000 for Miitomo
Re: Pokkén Tournament Update 1.2 Goes Live, to the Despair of Shadow Mewtwo Players
Re: Review: Yoshi's Story (Wii U eShop / N64)
I remember being hugely disappointed with this game when it came out. It gave me this feeling of 'that's it?!?' However, I really liked the pop-up book world select part.
Re: GoldenEye 007 Director Martin Hollis Found A Weakness In The N64 That Almost Caused Another Delay
@Danrenfroe2016 Lol, Tomb Raider was the exact game I was thinking about. the last stage on Burning Rangers for the Saturn is pretty rough. It appears like it's incomplete or something or, the developer ran out of time.
